Answer the scheduling question in the first paragraph
A principal reading applications in June holds a master schedule with holes in it. For English the holes are usually filled, so the question is not "can this person teach English" but "what else does this close".
Write the second column of your eligibility into the opening: "My English Language Arts 7-12 certificate is paired with an ESOL endorsement, and I have taught AP English Language, Journalism I and Creative Writing."
That sentence answers three scheduling questions at once, and almost nobody writes it, because the standard English letter opens with a paragraph about literature.

English is one of the harder subjects to prove on paper: results are slow, partly qualitative, and often not in any district dashboard.

Pick one and give the before, the after and the period. A number with a time frame reads as evidence; three without one read as decoration.
Private, charter and international posts
The same letter needs different weighting depending on the reader.

In private and independent schools a licence is often not required, so the differentiator moves to what you would build: the elective, the seminar sequence, the publication. Name texts.
English is not where the shortage is, and the letter should assume that
From states' 2024 to 2025 Teacher Shortage Area reports, the Learning Policy Institute counted special education reported in shortage by 45 states, science by 41 and mathematics by 40, with at least 425,412 positions nationally unfilled or filled by a teacher not fully certified, about 1 in 8 (Learning Policy Institute, 13 July 2026).
Secondary teaching as a whole is flat. High school teaching had 1,087,500 jobs in 2025, no projected change through 2035 and about 63,500 openings a year, nearly all replacements; middle school teaching had 630,100 jobs on the same trajectory with about 38,800 openings (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).
Those two facts set the letter's job. There is no general shortage for an English applicant to appeal to and no premium attached to the subject, so the letter has to show that hiring you closes a second gap.
Put the second endorsement in the first paragraph. Name the electives you can run, including ones you would build from nothing. Give one course, one number and one period of time. Read their course catalogue and name something real from it. Offer the sponsorship you intend to take. Proofread it three times.
Do not open with a sentence about loving books; it is the most common opening in this subject's applicant pool. Do not use "passionate", "dedicated" or "lifelong learner". Do not write to a hiring committee when the principal is named on the school site. Do not claim an endorsement you do not hold. Do not send a letter with a typographical error in it.
Length, format and sending it

Address a person. Campus leadership is public on nearly every school website, and "Dear Hiring Committee" on an otherwise specific file reads as a letter sent to twelve schools.
