Application for Assistant Principal, Ascension Ridge High School

Dear Dr. Thibodeaux,

I am applying for the Assistant Principal post at Ascension Ridge High School. I hold the Louisiana Educational Leader Level 1 certificate, and for the last five years at Magnolia Trace I have carried state testing coordination, the master schedule, and discipline and attendance for grades 10 and 11. If the schedule is what you most want off your desk, that is the piece I would ask for.

The result I would want to bring is the attendance work. When I took grades 10 and 11, chronic absenteeism in those grade levels was 31%. We built a three-tier system with a weekly case review, moved the first contact from a mailed letter to a phone call made by someone the family already knew, and added a home visit stage for students past fifteen absences. It is 19% now, three years later, and out-of-school suspensions in the same grade levels fell from 412 to 168 a year over that period once we replaced automatic suspension for minor infractions with a restorative conference and a re-entry plan.

I read that Ascension Ridge moved to a seven-period schedule this year and added two career pathways. Schedules built under that kind of change tend to produce singleton conflicts in the second year rather than the first, and that is work I would want. I have also run four LEAP administrations with no test security irregularities, which I mention because it is the portfolio piece nobody volunteers for.

My certificate is current through 2028 and I completed the parish aspiring principal program in 2025. I can start with the July administrative contract. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Cedric Bouchard, M.Ed.

Summary

An assistant principal cover letter names the portfolio you are ready to take off a principal's desk, the administrator license that makes that legal, and one measured result from something you already ran alone. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, what changes when you are applying up from the classroom, and the openings that get a strong file read twice.

Assistant Principal cover letter examples by experience level

An assistant principal cover letter is a one-page letter telling a principal which part of their job you are ready to take off their desk, what license makes that legal, and what happened the last time you ran something like it alone.

Principals hire assistant principals to shed work. The posting will not say which work, because the portfolio is usually decided after the hire from whatever the principal most wants to stop doing. A letter naming the pieces you can carry answers a question the posting did not manage to ask.

Expert Tip

Write the portfolio into your first paragraph

A principal reading applications in May is not thinking about instructional vision. They are thinking about the state testing window they ran alone last year, a master schedule that took them three weekends, and a chronic absenteeism number the district office has started asking about.

Name what you can take: "I have run state testing coordination for a 1,410-student campus for four years and built the master schedule for the last three." That sentence answers the question they actually have.

Then add the piece you know is hardest to hire for. Attendance and testing are the two that most applicants leave out of their letters, and they are the two most principals would hand over first.

What counts as evidence from a portfolio

Most assistant principal work produces operational numbers rather than test scores, and those are better evidence anyway because nobody else in the pile is using them.

Portfolio pieceWhat it looks like in a sentence
AttendanceChronic absenteeism in grades 10 and 11 fell from 31% to 19% over three years
DisciplineOut-of-school suspensions fell from 412 to 168 a year, repeat referrals from 38% to 17%

Statistical insight

Eight in ten principals came through this seat, and quality beats tenure

The share of US public school principals who previously served as an assistant principal rose from 50% in 1987 to 1988 to 80% in 2020 to 2021, and the share of public schools employing an assistant principal from 34% to 61% (National Teacher and Principal Survey, analyzed in the AEFP Live Handbook chapter on assistant principals, updated August 2026).

Studies indicate that principals with assistant principal experience generally perform no differently than principals without it (The Wallace Foundation, April 2021), while later work finds that the quality of that experience matters more than simply having had it. Read that as instruction for the letter: nobody is impressed that you held the title, and they are reading for one thing you ran alone, at a stated scale, with a number that moved and stayed moved.

Applying up, applying across, applying in

Do

Applying up from the classroom, write the leadership work you already did without the title: the dean role, the department chair year, the testing site coordination, the grade-level team you led, and put the license and its number in the first line since that is the gate. Applying across from another assistant principalship, name the portfolio you held and the portfolio you want, because that is the trade the principal is making. Applying inside your own district, still name one specific thing about the campus, since the reader knows you know and will notice if you did not bother.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not describe yourself as supporting the principal in all aspects of school operations, which is what the job description already says. Do not name, initial or describe a student, family or staff member, in a discipline story or anywhere else. Do not offer a philosophy of leadership in a letter that has not yet said what you can run. Do not claim a campus result that belonged to your grade levels, or a grade-level result that belonged to the campus. Do not send a letter with no campus name in it.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. PDF unless the district portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the post: cedric-bouchard-assistant-principal-cover-letter.pdf.

Address the principal by name. Campus leadership is public on nearly every school website, and "Dear Hiring Committee" on an administrative application reads as a letter sent to nine schools in one evening.

Keep the figures identical to your resume so the two agree. Our assistant principal resume example is built on the same numbers used here.

Key takeaways

  1. Name the portfolio pieces you can carry in the first paragraph.
  2. Put the administrator license, its level and its number in the opening lines.
  3. Pick one portfolio piece and give a baseline, an endpoint and a period.
  4. Use operational numbers: attendance, suspensions, testing irregularities, schedule conflicts.
  5. Offer the piece nobody volunteers for, which is usually testing or attendance.
  6. Name one real thing about their campus, taken from their own pages.
  7. Never name or describe an individual student, family or staff member.

Assistant principal cover letter questions, answered

How long should an assistant principal cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. Administrative postings draw fewer applications than teaching posts but each file is read more carefully, so the working length is the one where every sentence is load-bearing.

What do I write if I have never been an administrator?

Write the leadership work you did without the title: dean of students, department chair, testing site coordinator, grade-level lead, the committee you chaired. Give it the treatment a portfolio gets, which is what you ran, at what scale, and what number moved. Put the license first, because it is what makes you eligible and strong classroom applicants routinely bury it.

Should I say which portfolio I want?

Yes, and it is one of the few things that separates these letters. Naming a preference shows you understand that the job is a delegation rather than a rank, and it gives the principal something to respond to. Offer a second choice in the same sentence so it does not read as a condition.

How do I write about discipline in a letter?

Write the system and the numbers, never the incident. What you replaced, what you replaced it with, and what the referral and suspension counts did over a stated period. A letter that tells a story about a particular student is a letter that will be forwarded to someone it should not reach.

Does a doctorate help an assistant principal application?

It rarely decides the hire, though it can move your placement where a district pays a doctoral column. These posts are filled on the portfolio: what you ran, at what scale, whether the result held. List the degree, then spend the letter on the work.
