Lead with the band, because eligibility is checked first
Middle school is the only level where three credentials compete for one vacancy. An elementary K-8 licence, a middle-grades band such as 4-8 or 5-9, and a secondary 7-12 subject licence may all be valid for the same Grade 7 posting, depending on the state. A handful of states, including California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Utah, issue no distinct middle-level credential at all (Association for Middle Level Education, most recent published state summary, 2021).
So write it as numbers: "I hold a Michigan certificate with a Mathematics 5-9 endorsement." Not "I am certified to teach middle school", which a principal cannot check against their schedule.
If you are applying in another state, add one clause on where reciprocity stands. A file that leaves that open gets set aside for one that does not.

Almost every applicant says they love this age. Very few describe the structure they worked inside, which is the part a middle school principal is actually hiring for.

The professional body for the level describes teaming as building an environment where "no issue is viewed in isolation, and students benefit from a unified team of adults who know them well" (Association for Middle Level Education, March 2026). A letter that shows you have worked that way is doing more than a letter that says you care.
Crossing from elementary, or down from high school
Coming from elementary, address the departmentalised load directly: how many students you would see in a day, how you plan for five sections rather than one class, and any subject depth or coursework you hold. Coming from high school, address the age: what you would change about how you run a room for thirteen-year-olds, and any advisory, club or coaching work that shows you have held relationships rather than only delivered content. Either way, say the band and the endorsement in the first two lines.
Do not treat middle school as a stepping stone in writing; a principal reading "while I work toward a high school position" is reading a one-year hire. Do not claim experience with teaming if your school ran departments. Do not open with a philosophy paragraph. Do not send a letter with no building name in it.
Flat level, three hot endorsements
Middle school teaching held 630,100 jobs in 2025 with no projected change through 2035 and about 38,800 openings a year, almost all of them replacements (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). The median annual wage was $64,370 as of May 2025.
Underneath that flat surface sit three subjects in real shortage. Federal Teacher Shortage Area data for 2024 to 2025 shows special education reported by 45 states, science by 41 and mathematics by 40 (Learning Policy Institute, July 2026), and the pay follows: special education middle school teachers had a median of $66,810 against $64,370 for general middle school teachers (BLS, May 2025).
There is also demand in the content itself. Grade 8 mathematics scored nine points below 2019 on the 2024 NAEP with no state posting a gain, and Grade 8 science was four points down against 2019 with the largest share below NAEP Basic since 2009 (National Assessment Governing Board, January and September 2025). If your endorsement is in one of these, say it in line one and keep the letter short.

What if I am changing from elementary to middle school?
Address the departmentalised load head on: five sections, 130 or more students a day, planning for one or two preps rather than every subject. Then name any subject depth you hold. Many states allow an elementary licence to cover Grade 7 and 8, so eligibility is often fine; what you have to prove is that you know what changes.
