Summary

A middle school teacher resume names the grade band on your licence, the subjects it covers, and the interdisciplinary team you taught on. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the licence band problem that quietly disqualifies strong applicants, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

Middle School Teacher resume examples by experience level

A middle school teacher resume is a one to two page document naming the grade band printed on your licence, the subjects it covers, and the team you taught on.

Middle school is the only level where three different credentials compete for the same posting. An elementary K-8 licence, a middle-grades 4-8 or 5-9 licence and a secondary 7-12 subject licence can all be valid for the same Grade 7 maths vacancy, depending on the state. A principal reading your file is checking eligibility before anything else, and a resume that leaves the band unstated makes that check impossible.

How to write a middle school teacher resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, licence and endorsements, teaching experience, education, and skills. One page for the first five years, two once you have led a team or written curriculum.

SectionWhat it answersWhere it goes
Licence and bandAm I allowed to schedule this person for Grade 7?Under the summary, with the band spelled out

Expert Tip

Write the licence band as numbers, not as a level

Most states issue a distinct middle-level credential and they do not agree on where it starts and stops. Common bands include 4-8, 5-8, 5-9 and 6-8, while a handful of states, including California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Utah, issue no separate middle-level licence at all and staff middle grades from elementary and secondary credentials instead (Association for Middle Level Education, most recent published state summary, 2021; check your own state board, since these change).

So "certified to teach middle school" is not a usable claim. "Michigan Standard Teaching Certificate, Mathematics 5-9, #MI-2207845, valid through 2029" is.

If you are applying across state lines, add one line about reciprocity: whether you hold a licence in the target state, have an application in progress, or are eligible through an interstate agreement. A principal will not chase that down for you.

Run the file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you apply, since district portals parse these into a structured record before a person opens them.

Choosing the best resume format for a middle school teacher resume

Reverse chronological. Middle school hiring rewards continuity, because the hardest part of the job is not content, it is holding relationships with 120 adolescents across a year, and a principal reads a steady timeline as evidence you can.

One page early, two once you have team leadership, curriculum writing or a coaching line worth its own space.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Mathematics Teacher, Grade 7, Westbrook Middle School, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Grand Rapids, MI, August 2018 to Present

Teach 5 sections of Grade 7 mathematics, 134 students, on a four-teacher interdisciplinary team sharing a cohort of 112.

Took the team's mathematics proficiency from 41% to 58% over three years by rebuilding the intervention block around number sense rather than reteaching the previous unit.

Built a weekly advisory check-in structure with the team; chronic absenteeism in the cohort fell from 26% to 17% across two years.

Co-plan with the team's English, science and social studies teachers on shared units and run joint family conferences, roughly 90 a year.

Mentor two early-career teachers, including weekly co-planning and classroom observation.

Show that you have worked on a team, because middle school runs on them

This is the section that separates someone who has taught adolescents from someone who has taught a subject to adolescents.

Middle schools are organised around interdisciplinary teams: a small group of teachers sharing one cohort of students, meeting daily, and intervening together. The professional body for the level describes teaming as creating "smaller, more personalized environments where students feel seen, heard, and valued" and building a structure where "no issue is viewed in isolation" (Association for Middle Level Education, March 2026).

Adaptable resume team and advisory example

Team structure: Four-teacher interdisciplinary team (mathematics, English, science, social studies) sharing a cohort of 112 Grade 7 students. Daily common planning period.

Advisory: 18-student advisory group, daily, with weekly attendance and grade check-ins and two family contacts per student per semester.

Shared systems: Common behaviour expectations, joint family conferences, shared intervention block, weekly data meeting.

If your school does not team, say so plainly and describe what it runs instead. A principal at a teamed school would rather know now.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Ten to fourteen entries in three groups: instruction, adolescent-specific practice, and systems.

Adaptable resume skills example

Instruction: Illustrative Mathematics, Number sense intervention, Standards-based grading, Small-group instruction, Differentiation across a four-year readiness range

Middle level practice: Interdisciplinary teaming, Advisory programme design, Restorative practice, Grade 5 to 6 transition planning, Chronic absenteeism intervention

Assessment and systems: NWEA MAP, Common assessment design, Data team facilitation, PowerSchool, Google Classroom, Desmos

List your education, licence and endorsements

Licence with the band, the number and the expiry, then endorsements, then degrees, then current training.

Adaptable resume education and licensure example

Michigan Standard Teaching Certificate, #MI-2207845, valid through 2029. Endorsements: Mathematics 5-9, Reading K-12.

Master of Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI, 2021

Bachelor of Science, Mathematics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, 2017

Current training: Illustrative Mathematics implementation (2025), Restorative practice, Level 2 (2024), CPR and first aid (2026)

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, no photograph, no graphics. Two-column templates break district applicant systems, and a template that parses badly is a file that never reaches a human.

Do

Spell the licence band as numbers with the certificate number and expiry. Name your team structure and cohort size. Give the section count and student count for each role. Put one number in every bullet with the period it covers. Name the intervention or curriculum by its actual name. Mention the extracurricular or club you would run.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "certified to teach middle school", which is not a claim a principal can verify. Do not omit the subject endorsement if you have a general licence, because the schedule is built by subject. Do not describe yourself as passionate about this age group without showing a structure you built for them. Do not use a two-column template. Do not pad to two pages before you have led something.

Middle school teacher job market and outlook

Statistical insight

The level is flat; three endorsements are not

Analysing federal Teacher Shortage Area data for the 2024 to 2025 school year, the Learning Policy Institute found special education reported in shortage by 45 states, science by 41 and mathematics by 40, with 48 states reporting a shortage in at least one of the three (Learning Policy Institute, July 2026).

That shows up directly in pay at this level: special education middle school teachers had a median of $66,810 in May 2025 against $64,370 for general middle school teachers (BLS, May 2025).

There is also live demand in the content itself. Grade 8 mathematics scored 272 on the 2024 NAEP, nine points below 2019 and not significantly different from 2022, and no state or participating urban district posted a gain in Grade 8 mathematics that year (National Assessment Governing Board, January 2025). Grade 8 science fell four points against 2019, with 38% below NAEP Basic, the highest share since 2009 (National Assessment Governing Board, September 2025).

If you hold a maths, science or special education endorsement, that is the first thing on the page. If you do not, the resume's job is a second endorsement, an intervention you built, or an absenteeism or transition structure you can point to.

What salary you can expect as a middle school teacher

The median annual wage for middle school teachers was $64,370 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $48,080 and the highest 10 percent over $102,540 (BLS, May 2025).

Put beside the levels either side, the picture is useful when you are deciding which postings to chase: elementary teachers had a median of $63,970 and high school teachers $72,040 in the same cycle. Middle school pays roughly what elementary pays and about $7,670 less than high school, even though a middle school teacher usually carries a secondary-style load of five sections and 130 students.

Almost all of that spread is the district salary schedule. What a resume can move is the stipend layer: a shortage-subject stipend, a team leader or department stipend, a coaching line, and club or athletics sponsorship. Those are paid against documentation, which is why the endorsements and the team leadership belong on the page in writing rather than in the interview.

Key takeaways for a middle school teacher resume

  1. Write the licence band as numbers, with the certificate number and expiry.
  2. Name the subject endorsement, because the master schedule is built by subject.
  3. Describe your team: how many teachers, how many students, how often you met.
  4. Give the section count and student count for every role.
  5. Use one number with a time period in every bullet.
  6. Show an adolescent-specific structure you built: advisory, transition, attendance, intervention.
  7. If you are crossing state lines, say where your reciprocity stands.

Middle school teacher resume questions, answered

What licence do I need to teach middle school?

It depends on the state. Most issue a distinct middle-level credential in a band such as 4-8, 5-8, 5-9 or 6-8, usually tied to one or two subjects. A few states issue none and staff the middle grades from elementary and secondary licences instead. Write your own band as numbers on the resume rather than saying "middle school certified", because eligibility is checked against the band.

Can I teach middle school with an elementary licence?

In many states, yes, where the elementary band runs to Grade 8. Whether you are competitive is a separate question: middle school postings are usually built by subject, so an elementary generalist applying for Grade 7 maths should show subject depth, any maths coursework or endorsement, and experience with a departmentalised load.

How long should a middle school teacher resume be?

One page for the first five years. Two once you have led a team, written curriculum, coached colleagues, or built a programme worth describing. The second page should carry leadership, not more of the same classroom bullets.

What if my school does not use teams?

Say so and describe what it does use: departments, houses, looping, advisory, a multi-tiered support structure. Naming the real structure is more credible than implying a teamed experience you did not have, and a principal will ask about it in the interview either way.

How do I show results at middle level without state test data?

Use what your building tracks: benchmark or NWEA growth, course failure rates, the share of students moving up a performance band, chronic absenteeism in your cohort, referral counts, or transition data for incoming Grade 6. Attendance and failure-rate figures are especially persuasive at this level, because they are the outcomes middle school leaders lose sleep over.
