  15. FAQ

An elementary school teacher resume is a one-to-two page document that answers three questions in its top third: which grades you teach, what licenses you hold, and what measurably changed for the children in your room.

The third is where nearly every elementary resume goes thin, because the work feels unquantifiable from the inside. It is not. A classroom generates reading levels, benchmark scores, attendance, intervention exits and family engagement rates, and a principal reads those the way a hiring manager anywhere reads revenue.

Resume guide for an elementary school teacher resume

This guide and the corresponding elementary school teacher resume example will cover:

  • How to write an elementary school teacher resume, section by section
  • Why the grade band belongs above the job title
  • Three adaptable summaries: new teacher, mid-career, and grade-level lead
  • Turning classroom work into numbers without breaking FERPA
  • Layout, licensure and what districts actually verify
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write an elementary school teacher resume

Six sections in this order: contact header with credential, professional summary, teaching experience, education and licensure, skills and platforms, and professional development. Everything else is optional.

Two things matter more here than in secondary teaching.

Grade band is the primary filter. A principal filling a Grade 2 vacancy is not evaluating "elementary experience" in the abstract. K-2 and 3-5 are different jobs: one is teaching children to read, the other is teaching children to read to learn. Say which you have done, by grade, with years.

Self-contained or departmentalised changes everything. A self-contained teacher plans and delivers every subject to one group. A departmentalised teacher teaches one or two subjects to several groups. A resume that does not say which leaves the reader guessing at the single most important fact about your day.

Expert tip

Honing your resume for the district's parser

Most districts of any size run an applicant tracking system, commonly Frontline, PowerSchool or Workday, and the search a hiring administrator types is narrow: a grade, a credential, sometimes a programme name.

Write both forms of anything abbreviated, once: "Individualized Education Program (IEP)", "English Language Learner (ELL)", "Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)", "Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)", "Response to Intervention (RTI)".

Name the curriculum by its actual title, not its category. Districts search for what they bought: Wit and Wisdom, Eureka Math, Heggerty, Fundations, Into Reading, i-Ready, Bridges. "Literacy curriculum" matches nothing.

Run the finished file through the free ATS checker before you apply.

Choosing the best resume format

Reverse chronological, one page under five years, two pages beyond. Elementary hiring runs on a spring cycle and principals read quickly.

FormatBest forRisk
Reverse chronologicalNearly every elementary teacherNone, this is what districts expect
Reverse chronological with a long-term subbing blockTeachers building experience through placementsGroup by district, not by school, or it reads as instability
CombinationCareer changers on an alternative certification routePrior roles must keep their dates

Include your contact information

Name, credential, target grade band, phone, professional email, city and state. No street address, no photo, no date of birth.

Right
Hannah Jonas, M.Ed.Elementary Teacher, Grades 3-5, Self-Contained(415) 612-0045, hannah.jonas@email.comSan Mateo, CA. CA Multiple Subject Credential #123456
Wrong
Hannah JonasDedicated educator seeking a teaching position(415) 612-0045, hjonas\_teacherlife99@email.com914 24th Street, San Mateo, CA 94403

The credential number in the header is not decoration. District human resources verifies licensure before anyone assesses fit, and a file they can clear without emailing you moves faster than one they cannot.

Make use of a summary

Three to four lines: grade band, years, setting, and one measured outcome. Write it last, once the experience section has given you a number worth quoting.

New teacher adaptable resume summary example

Recently credentialed elementary teacher with a California Multiple Subject Credential and 480 supervised hours across Grades 2 and 4. Designed a six-week guided reading unit that moved 18 of 24 students up at least one Fountas and Pinnell level. Trained in Heggerty phonemic awareness and PBIS de-escalation, and fluent in Google Classroom and Seesaw.

Mid-career adaptable resume summary example

Grade 4 teacher with six years in Title I self-contained classrooms and a Reading Specialist Authorization. Raised class ELA proficiency from 54% to 71% over two years by rebuilding the literacy block around small-group instruction and biweekly progress monitoring. Mentored three first-year teachers, all retained into a second year.

Grade-level lead adaptable resume summary example

Grade-level lead and Grade 3 teacher with 12 years in K-5, 5 of them chairing a six-teacher team through two curriculum adoptions. Moved the grade's reading benchmark pass rate from 61% to 84% across three years and wrote the pacing guide now used across the district's four elementary campuses. Trained in Orton-Gillingham and LETRS.

Right vs wrong: the same summary, twice

Right
Grade 4 teacher with six years in Title I self-contained classrooms and a Reading Specialist Authorization.Raised class ELA proficiency from 54% to 71% over two years.Mentored three first-year teachers, all retained into a second year.
Wrong
Passionate elementary educator who loves making a difference in children's lives.Skilled at creating engaging, student-centered lessons.Strong collaborator and team player.

Every line on the right could be written by any of the forty other applicants, which is the whole problem with it.

Outline your teaching experience

School, district, city and state, grade, whether the class was self-contained, and dates. Then three to five bullets, each carrying a number or a named programme.

  • Instead ofTaught all subjects to a class of 24 students

Adaptable resume employment history example

Grade 4 Teacher, Self-Contained, Lincoln Elementary School, Sacramento City Unified, Sacramento, CA, August 2020 to Present

Rebuilt the 90-minute literacy block around three daily small-group rotations and biweekly progress monitoring, raising class ELA proficiency from 54% to 71% over two school years.

Piloted standards-based grading, later adopted by all six Grade 4 teachers, cutting parent grading disputes to zero across two reporting cycles.

Wrote and delivered 32 IEP-aligned accommodation plans with the special education team, with 100% compliance at annual review.

Mentored three first-year teachers through district induction; all three were retained into a second year.

Every figure there is class-level or cohort-level. Never name a child, never quote an individual score, and never describe a behaviour incident in a way that could identify the student it involved. FERPA applies to a resume exactly as it applies to a cumulative file.

What elementary employers rate most highly

ONET, the U.S. Department of Labor's occupational database, ranks the top skills for elementary school teachers in this order: Learning Strategies, Speaking, Active Listening, Critical Thinking, Monitoring, Reading Comprehension, Writing and Active Learning (ONET OnLine, 25-2021.00, 2025).

The technology it flags as in demand is narrower than most teachers expect: Google Classroom, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Naming the specific assessment and curriculum platforms your target district runs, on top of those, is what turns a generic skills block into a match.

Adaptable resume skills example

Instructional: Guided reading, Structured literacy, Small-group differentiation, Standards-based grading, IEP and 504 implementation, MTSS and RTI, PBIS de-escalation, Formative assessment design

Curriculum and assessment: Wit and Wisdom, Eureka Math, Heggerty, Fountas and Pinnell benchmark assessment, DIBELS, i-Ready

Platforms: Google Classroom, Seesaw, PowerSchool, Illuminate

List the education that elevates your candidacy

Credential first, with the issuing state, the type, the number and the expiration. Then degrees, then professional development.

Expert tip

Add the authorizations, not just the credential

A Multiple Subject credential lets you teach an elementary class. The authorizations bolted onto it are what make you the answer to a specific vacancy: Reading Specialist, English Learner, Bilingual, Special Education, Gifted and Talented.

Districts post vacancies against those authorizations and search for them by name. If you hold one, it belongs in the header as well as the education section, because that is the line that moves your file out of the general pile.

Adaptable resume education example

Master of Education, Curriculum and Instruction, San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA, 2019

California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential #123456, valid through 2029. Reading Specialist Authorization, 2022. English Learner Authorization, 2020.

Bachelor of Arts, English, University of California, Davis, CA, 2016

Professional development: Orton-Gillingham Level 1 (2023), LETRS Volumes 1 and 2 (2024), CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (2024)

Choose the right resume layout and design

One page under five years, two beyond, single column, standard typeface at 10.5 to 12 point. Elementary resumes attract decorative templates more than any other teaching role, and they are the ones most likely to arrive unreadable.

Do

  • Keep a single column with plain section headings so a district parser can find each block.
  • Put the grade band and credential number in the top third.
  • Say self-contained or departmentalised for every role.
  • Name the curriculum the district actually bought.
  • Save as PDF and name the file yourself, for example hannah-jonas-grade-4-teacher-resume.pdf.

Don’t

  • Do not use apple, crayon or chalkboard graphics, coloured borders, or a photo; they parse as nothing and read as inexperience.
  • Do not put contact details in the document header or footer, which many parsers skip entirely.
  • Do not name a child, quote an individual score, or describe an identifiable IEP or behaviour record.
  • Do not list every workshop you have attended; keep professional development to what a principal would ask about.

Elementary school teacher job market and outlook

Elementary teaching is a large, flat occupation with heavy replacement demand. Openings are plentiful; net new positions are not.

MeasureValue
Kindergarten and elementary teaching jobs, 20251,530,500
Projected change, 2025-350% (little or no change), -6,100 positions
Projected annual openings~99,400
Typical entry-level educationBachelor's degree
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections.

Roughly 99,400 openings a year against a shrinking headcount means essentially every vacancy is a replacement. Practically, that has two consequences for your resume. Retention is what districts are buying, so evidence that you stayed, grew and mentored carries real weight. And because the vacancies are replacement-driven they cluster: special education, bilingual and English learner authorizations, and Title I campuses. An authorization in any of those is the highest-return line you can add.

What salary you can expect

The median annual wage was $63,970 for elementary school teachers and $62,680 for kindergarten teachers as of May 2025 (BLS), with the combined category at $63,820.

Those medians hide a wide spread, because pay is set by a public district salary schedule with two axes: years of service and graduate credit hours. Your resume does not negotiate your base rate. What it negotiates is your step and lane placement, which is decided by how many prior years the district agrees to credit and how many graduate units you can document. List every contracted year, including long-term substitute assignments, with exact dates, and list graduate credits earned beyond your degree. That is worth real money at the offer stage and costs two lines.

Key takeaways for an elementary school teacher resume

  1. Put the grade band, the credential number and any authorization in the top third of page one.
  2. Say self-contained or departmentalised for every role; it is the most important fact about your day.
  3. Replace duty statements with class-level outcomes: benchmark movement, intervention exits, attendance, conference rates.
  4. Name the curriculum and assessment products by title, because districts search for what they bought.
  5. Show retention and mentoring, since nearly every vacancy is a replacement.
  6. Never name a child or quote an individual score; FERPA applies to your resume.
  7. List every contracted year and every graduate credit, because they set your step and lane.

Elementary school teacher resume questions, answered

How long should an elementary school teacher resume be?

One page under five years of contracted teaching, two pages beyond it. Grade-level leads, instructional coaches and teachers with a curriculum or presentation record can justify the second page sooner. The top third of page one carries most of the decision either way.

Should I put my credential number on my resume?

Yes, in the contact header with the state, type and expiration year. District human resources verifies licensure before assessing fit, and a file that clears that check without a follow-up email moves faster than one that does not.

How do I quantify elementary teaching on a resume?

Use what the classroom already produces at class level: benchmark or proficiency movement, reading levels gained, intervention exits, attendance, conference attendance rates, discipline referrals, and the number of teachers you mentored. All of it is defensible and none of it requires naming a child.

What should I write with only student teaching experience?

Treat the placement as a job. Name the district, the grade, whether the class was self-contained, the supervised hours, and one outcome you produced: a unit you designed, an assessment gain, a family communication system you built. A placement with a number outperforms three years of unrelated work with none.

Does the grade band really matter that much?

Yes. A principal filling a Grade 2 vacancy is hiring someone to teach children to read; a Grade 5 vacancy is someone teaching children to read to learn. They are different jobs with different training, and a resume that says only "elementary" makes the reader do work they will not do.

What curriculum should I list?

The ones you have actually taught, by their real names: Wit and Wisdom, Eureka Math, Heggerty, Fundations, Into Reading, Bridges, i-Ready. Districts search for the product they have paid for and trained on, and a teacher who already knows it saves them a summer of training. Do not claim a curriculum you have only been trained on but never taught, because principals ask about it in the interview.
