Summary

A paraprofessional resume is a one-page document that has to clear a federal qualification rule before anything else on it is read. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the exact regulation a district personnel office is checking, the difference between instructional and non-instructional classification, and the documented route from this job to a teaching licence.

Paraprofessional resume examples by experience level

A paraprofessional resume is a one-page document that has to satisfy a compliance check before it is read as an application at all.

The office opening your file is not first asking whether you are good with children. It is asking whether you meet a federal qualification requirement, which classification you fall into, where you land on a negotiated salary schedule, and whether the assignment needs a training record it can produce in an audit.

Paraprofessional, teacher assistant and teacher aide are largely the same role under different district vocabulary; use whichever the posting uses. Our teacher assistant resume example covers support model and ratio, and our teacher aide resume example the classroom-level work. This page is the formal one.

Resume guide for a paraprofessional resume

This guide and the corresponding paraprofessional resume example will cover:

  • How to write a paraprofessional resume, section by section
  • The federal Title I qualification rule, quoted, and how to satisfy it
  • Instructional and non-instructional classification, and why it changes the file
  • One-to-one and health-related assignments, written without describing a student
  • Classified hours, salary placement, evaluation and the route to a credential

How to write a paraprofessional resume

Six short sections: contact header, summary, qualification, experience, training and certifications, education. One page.

Qualification sits above experience because it is a gate. An office that cannot find your route in ten seconds has to set the file aside and email you, and files that get set aside lose their place.

Run it through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker first: large districts parse classified applications the same way they parse certificated ones.

Choosing the best resume format

Reverse chronological, one page, single column. Two pages only after a decade with a lead assignment. Classified hiring is high volume and largely clerical at the first stage, so the file is scanned against a checklist rather than read, and anything hiding a date, a site or a qualification works against you.

Include your contact information

Two lines there do compliance work: the qualification route says the file clears the federal bar, and the current certifications say the assignment can start without a training gap.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: classification, setting, years, assignment type, one thing delivered.

Experienced paraprofessional adaptable resume summary example

Special education instructional paraprofessional with six years in moderate to severe settings, currently on a one-to-one assignment specified on an IEP as dedicated adult support. Trained and delegated by the credentialed school nurse for gastrostomy tube feeding and seizure response, competency renewed annually. Implement behaviour intervention plans written by the school psychologist and maintain the daily record used at IEP meetings.

Lead paraprofessional adaptable resume summary example

Lead instructional paraprofessional with 12 years in a K-6 Title I site, 4 coordinating assignments and coverage for a team of 14 classified staff. Rebuilt the coverage plan so every self-contained classroom holds staffing through lunch and specialist periods, removing 16 hours a week of uncovered time. Enrolled in a state-funded classified employee teacher credentialing programme.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Instructional Paraprofessional, Special Education, Moderate to Severe K-2, Arroyo Vista Elementary, Fresno Unified School District, Fresno, CA, August 2020 to Present

Classified bargaining unit, Instructional Aide III, 6.0 hours a day, 183-day work year. Deliver small-group and individual instruction designed by the credentialed education specialist, in close proximity as required for instructional paraprofessionals.

Held a one-to-one assignment specified on an IEP as dedicated adult support across two school years, implementing a behaviour intervention plan written by the school psychologist.

Trained and delegated by the credentialed school nurse for gastrostomy tube feeding and emergency seizure medication, competency renewed annually. Maintain the daily record used at IEP meetings.

Describe the work, never the child. No name, initials, diagnosis or age, and nothing quoted from an IEP or behaviour log. "A one-to-one assignment specified on an IEP as dedicated adult support" describes your job; anything narrower describes a student in a document that circulates by email.

Instructional or non-instructional: the distinction that decides your file

This is the line almost no paraprofessional resume draws, and it is the first thing a Title I personnel office looks for.

34 CFR 200.58 requires a secondary school diploma or its recognised equivalent, then one of three routes: "completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education", "obtained an associate's or higher degree", or demonstrated, "through a formal State or local academic assessment", knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing "reading/language arts, writing, and mathematics" or their readiness equivalents. The statutory hook is ESEA section 1111(g)(2)(M), the state plan assurance that the state has professional standards for paraprofessionals in a programme supported under Title I, Part A.

The requirement attaches to instructional duties, not to the job title. Oregon's guidance puts the exclusion plainly: individuals working solely in non-instructional roles, "such as food service, cafeteria or playground supervision, personal care services, and non-instructional computer assistance, are not considered to be instructional paraprofessionals"; duties consisting solely of translation or of parent and family engagement are likewise outside it (Oregon Department of Education, ESSA Quick Reference Brief, updated November 2024).

Direct supervision, in the same guidance, is functional rather than loose: the teacher prepares the lessons, plans the activities and evaluates student achievement, and the paraprofessional works "in close and frequent proximity with the teacher". States add a layer on that floor, and California cites Education Code section 45330 alongside the federal rule (California Department of Education, last reviewed 9 September 2025).

Expert Tip

Name the regulation, not just the credential

Write three things on the page: your classification as instructional or non-instructional, your qualification route with the regulation named, and who supervises the instruction you deliver.

Most resumes write "Associate degree" and stop, leaving the office to work out whether that clears the federal bar. "Instructional paraprofessional, Title I qualified under 34 CFR 200.58, route: associate degree" does the whole check in one line, and it is the highest-value edit on this page.

If you took the assessment route, name the assessment and the year. If you took the coursework route, give the semester units, because two years of study is counted in units rather than years enrolled.

One-to-one and health-related assignments

These assignments carry a pay differential in most districts, and their own documentation.

Under IDEA, 34 CFR 300.156(b)(2)(iii) permits "paraprofessionals and assistants who are appropriately trained and supervised, in accordance with State law, regulation, or written policy" to assist in providing special education and related services. Appropriately trained and supervised is the phrase to answer.

A dedicated assignment is written into an IEP rather than a job description, and state guidance uses those terms: paraprofessional support "may also be described on the IEP as dedicated adult support or line-of-sight supervision" (Colorado Department of Education, guidance on paraprofessionals serving IDEA-eligible students, December 2025).

Health-related tasks are different again, because a licensed nurse delegates them rather than a teacher assigning them. The same guidance gives the standard example: a school nurse "may train and delegate a paraprofessional to provide gastrostomy-tube (g-tube) feeding". Delegated tasks carry a training record, a competency check and usually an annual renewal, so on the resume they become one line: the task, who trained and delegated it, and when competency was last renewed. Never the student it was performed for.

Classified employment: hours, salary placement and evaluation

Paraprofessionals are classified employees rather than certificated ones, and almost every term of the job follows from that. It is a heavily unionised classification: in 2025 annual averages the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded union membership of 32.5 percent across education, training and library occupations, with 35.9 percent represented, against 37.8 and 41.4 percent in local government (BLS, Union Members 2025, released 18 February 2026).

Four consequences for the resume.

Placement is on a schedule, not negotiated. Classified schedules run on a classification level and a step, so write your level as the district writes it; it is what the offer is built from.

Hours and work year are contractual. Many posts are part-time by design, and the Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that "many teacher assistants do not work during the summer". State daily hours and duty days: a 6.0-hour, 183-day assignment and a 3.5-hour, 180-day one are different jobs with different benefit eligibility.

Seniority is real. Transfer rights, assignment preference and layoff order run on classified seniority in most agreements, so show continuity.

Evaluation is on a cycle. Classified evaluations are usually annual through probation and then on the agreement's cycle. If yours have been satisfactory or better throughout, one line saying so beats any adjective.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Ten to twelve entries, kept to what appears in a job description.

Adaptable resume skills example

Instructional support: Small-group reading and mathematics rotations, Accommodation implementation, Progress monitoring, Augmentative communication devices

Behaviour and health: Behaviour intervention plan implementation, CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Delegated health procedures under nurse supervision

Compliance and records: IEP data preparation, Mandated reporter obligations, Incident documentation

Systems and languages: Aeries, SEIS, Google Classroom. Spanish, fluent, including family meetings

List your education and the qualification that clears the federal bar

Qualification route first, then degrees and units, then the training record, every entry dated.

Adaptable resume education and training example

Qualification: Title I qualified under 34 CFR 200.58. Associate of Arts, Liberal Studies, Fresno City College, 2019, 62 semester units. District local assessment passed 2018.

In progress: Bachelor of Arts, Liberal Studies, California State University, Fresno, expected 2028, through a state-funded classified employee teacher credentialing programme.

Training record: CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, 2021, renewed 2026. Delegated health competency, gastrostomy tube feeding and emergency seizure medication, renewed August 2026. CPR and First Aid, American Red Cross, 2026. Mandated reporter training, 2026.

The route from paraprofessional to a teaching licence

This belongs on the resume while it is still in progress, because districts fund it and hiring managers look for it.

A fifty-state scan found registered teacher apprenticeship programmes in 45 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, "often tailor-made for currently employed, non-teacher school staff (such as paraprofessionals or long-term substitutes)" (EdTrust, Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Programs, 10 January 2025).

Grow-your-own programmes run alongside it. California's Classified School Employee Teacher Credentialing Program, authorised under Education Code sections 44392 and 44393, funds classified staff through a credential at up to $4,800 per participant per year, with $125 million appropriated in July 2021 to extend it five years (California Commission on Teacher Credentialing).

List it under education: programme, sponsor, credential, expected date.

Choose the right layout and design

One page, single column, 11 or 12 point, no photograph or graphics. Classified portals flatten the file before anyone sees it.

Do

Name the regulation and your qualification route in one line. Say whether your duties are instructional. Give your classification, level, daily hours and duty days. Date every training entry. Describe a dedicated assignment in IEP language. Put the credential pathway on while it is in progress.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not name a child, give initials, state a diagnosis or quote an IEP or behaviour log. Do not claim a delegated health task without saying who delegated it. Do not list an expired certification without marking it expired. Do not write "assisted the teacher" and stop.

Paraprofessional job market and outlook

A very large occupation with flat headcount and the highest replacement demand in education.

MeasureValue
Teacher assistant jobs, 20251,463,000
Projected change, 2025-350% (little or no change), -4,900
Projected annual openings~176,200
Typical entry-level educationSome college, no degree
Median annual wage, May 2025$36,780

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wage data. The Handbook counts all three job titles as one occupation.

Statistical insight

176,200 openings a year against a flat headcount

The occupation is projected to lose 4,900 jobs between 2025 and 2035, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies as little or no change, while generating about 176,200 openings a year, nearly all replacements (BLS OOH, 2025-35 projections).

So districts are buying stability, and a run of years at one site is worth stating plainly. And because the vacancies never stop, the assignments that pay more and last longer go to files documenting a specialisation: the instructional classification, the delegated health competency, the de-escalation certification, the language. Nobody else in the stack writes that down.

What salary you can expect as a paraprofessional

The median annual wage for teacher assistants, the occupation covering paraprofessionals, was $36,780 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $27,150 and the highest above $50,040. Local public schools employ 72 percent of the occupation at a median of $36,970, private schools 9 percent at $37,090, and child daycare services 10 percent at $34,920 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Read that with the work year in mind. Most paraprofessional pay runs on an hourly classified schedule across a school-year calendar, and the Handbook notes that many people in the occupation do not work during the summer, so the annual figure reflects fewer paid hours than a year-round job at the same rate.

Where a resume moves money is placement and differential: classification level, step credit for prior comparable service, and differentials for special education, one-to-one, bilingual and delegated health assignments. All are real, usually absent from the posting, and awarded against documentation, so listing the classification, certifications and renewals is what makes that conversation possible at offer stage.

Key takeaways for a paraprofessional resume

  1. Put the qualification route in one line: "Title I qualified under 34 CFR 200.58", plus which route.
  2. Say whether your duties are instructional; the requirement attaches to duties, not the title.
  3. Write your classification, level, daily hours and duty days as the district writes them.
  4. Describe a dedicated assignment in IEP language: dedicated adult support, line-of-sight supervision.
  5. For a delegated health task, name who delegated it and when competency was renewed.
  6. Date every training entry, and mark anything expired as expired.
  7. Put the credential pathway on the page while it is in progress.

Paraprofessional resume questions, answered

What qualifications does a paraprofessional need?

For instructional work in a Title I, Part A programme, 34 CFR 200.58 requires a secondary school diploma or recognised equivalent plus one of three routes: two years of study at an institution of higher education, an associate's or higher degree, or a passing result on a formal state or local academic assessment. Name your route on the page.

What is the difference between an instructional and a non-instructional paraprofessional?

The requirement attaches to duties, not to the job title. Staff whose work consists solely of translation, of parent and family engagement, or of non-instructional duties such as food service, playground supervision, personal care or technical support are not instructional paraprofessionals for this purpose. If your duties are instructional, say so, because that is the classification the office is coding.

How do I write about a one-to-one assignment without identifying the student?

Use the language the paperwork uses. "Held a one-to-one assignment specified on an IEP as dedicated adult support across two school years" describes your job and identifies nobody. Leave out age, grade, diagnosis and anything quoted from a record. The same applies to delegated health tasks: name the task, the nurse who delegated it and the renewal date.

Should I put my classification and hours on a resume?

Yes. Classified salary placement is built from a classification, a level and a step, and daily hours and duty days determine benefit eligibility. "Instructional Aide III, 6.0 hours a day, 183-day work year" tells the office where you sit and lets it credit comparable prior service.

Can a paraprofessional become a teacher, and does it belong on the resume?

Yes to both, and put it on while it is in progress. Registered teacher apprenticeship programmes exist in 45 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, frequently designed for currently employed school staff (EdTrust, 10 January 2025). Name the programme, the credential and the expected date.
