Application for Social Studies Teacher, Fairlawn High School

Dear Ms. Whitmire,

I am applying for the Social Studies Teacher post at Fairlawn High School. My South Carolina Initial Certificate in Social Studies 9-12 was issued in May on programme recommendation from the University of South Carolina, so I can hold a contract from the August start. The certificate covers World History, US History and government, and I have taught all three, including a section of AP US Government.

My clinical internship was at Blackstone High School in Richland County, where I carried three preps and 118 students across five sections a day. From week 6 to week 16 I ran the timetable independently, including the planning, the grading and the family contact. Unit assessment mastery in my sections moved from 54% to 71% between the first and third common assessments, and the three-week Reconstruction unit I wrote is now used in both US History sections. A lunch review group I ran for 22 students on the retest list returned 18 passes.

I am currently covering a full Grade 10 US History timetable at Ridgeway High School as a long-term substitute, five sections and 142 students, so I am in a classroom now rather than describing one from last spring. I read that Fairlawn is adding an AP US Government section next year and that your department writes its own common assessments. I have done both, and I would be glad to take on Mock Trial, which I helped coach during my practicum.

My clinical record is 60 full days with 6 formal observations and 2 summative evaluations, and I passed edTPA Secondary History and Social Studies at 48 of 75. My cooperating teacher and university supervisor have both agreed to speak with you. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Imani Sorrells

Summary

A student teacher cover letter tells a principal when your certificate is issued, which courses you can be scheduled for, what changed in your own sections during the placement, and who observed you teaching. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter and what to write when one placement is your entire employment history.

Student Teacher cover letter examples by experience level

A student teacher cover letter is a one page letter telling a principal when your certificate is issued, which courses you can be scheduled to teach, what measurably changed in your sections during the placement, and who watched you teach.

You write against one disadvantage and one advantage. The disadvantage is a single placement where other applicants have years. The advantage is that the placement was observed, evaluated and documented by two trained educators, which no experienced applicant can say about any semester of their career. The letter's job is to spend it.

Expert Tip

Lead with the date your certificate is issued

A principal reading applications in spring works backwards from a contract date. Their first question about a candidate still in a preparation programme is not whether you can teach; it is whether you can legally be employed in August.

Answer it in the first two lines: "My South Carolina Initial Certificate in Social Studies 9-12 is issued in May on programme recommendation." Then name the courses the certificate covers and which of them you have run.

Every sentence on the right is a fact a principal can act on. Every sentence on the left appeared in the last nine letters they opened.

What counts as evidence when your only classroom is a placement

The instinct is to write about your philosophy, because it feels like the only thing you own. You own a semester of measured teaching instead.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence
LoadThree preps and 118 students across five sections a day
IndependenceRan the full timetable alone from week 6 to week 16
MovementUnit assessment mastery moved from 54% to 71% across three common assessments
Recovery18 of the 22 students in the lunch review group passed on the retest
Something you builtWrote a three-week Reconstruction unit now used in both US History sections

Pick one and give it four sentences. All five a sentence each reads as a list, not a claim.

Name the two people who watched you teach

This is the sentence experienced applicants cannot write, and most student teachers leave it out. In South Carolina, clinical practice requires at least four classroom observations, two by the institutional supervisor and two by the cooperating teacher, plus a summative evaluation from each, with both evaluators trained in the state's ADEPT system (South Carolina Department of Education, Field and Clinical Experience Requirements).

Say in the letter that both have agreed to speak. It turns a claim about your teaching into two phone calls a principal can make this week, and it signals that the people who watched you closest were happy to be named.

Do

Put the certification area and issue date in the first two lines. Name the courses your certificate covers and mark which you have taught. Give one number with a time frame. Name one real thing about the campus. Offer the club or duty you would take on. Say your cooperating teacher and supervisor have agreed to be contacted.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not open with why you decided to become a teacher; it is the most common first paragraph in the folder. Do not write "assisted" or "observed" about work you did. Do not apologise for limited experience. Do not send the letter without a campus name, and do not claim a course your certificate does not cover.

Statistical insight

The vacancies are real and they are concentrated

South Carolina districts reported 706 vacant teaching positions for 2025 to 2026, down from 1,043 the previous year and from a historic high of 1,613 in 2023 to 2024 (CERRA South Carolina Annual Educator Supply and Demand Report, 26 November 2025). Nationally, for 2024 to 2025, special education was reported in shortage by 45 states, science by 41 and mathematics by 40 (Learning Policy Institute, July 2025), while secondary teaching overall is flat: 1,087,500 high school teaching jobs in 2025, no projected change through 2035, and about 63,500 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).

That means two different letters. In a shortage certification area, keep it short and unambiguous; your area is the argument. Outside one, the letter has to work: the second course you can cover, the club you would sponsor, the thing you built during the placement.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal specifies otherwise, named for you and the post: imani-sorrells-social-studies-teacher-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person. Campus leadership is published on nearly every school website, and "Dear Hiring Committee" on an otherwise specific letter reads as one sent to fifteen schools.

Keep the numbers identical to your resume. Our student teacher resume example uses the same figures as this letter.

Key takeaways

  1. Put the certification area and issue date in the first two lines.
  2. Name the courses your certificate covers and which you have taught.
  3. Write the placement as employment: preps, roster, and the weeks you ran alone.
  4. Give one measured change with a time frame attached.
  5. Name one real thing about the campus, and offer the club or duty you would take on.
  6. Say your cooperating teacher and supervisor have agreed to be contacted, and keep it to one page addressed to a named person.

Student teacher cover letter questions, answered

Do I need a cover letter as a student teacher?

Yes, and it matters more for you than for an experienced applicant. A portal collects the same fields from everyone, and yours looks thin beside a teacher with eight years. The letter is the only place to say the placement was a full timetable run independently for eleven weeks, watched by two trained evaluators.

How do I write a cover letter with no teaching experience?

You have teaching experience. Write the placement as employment: the campus, the grade levels, the courses, the preps, the roster, the weeks you taught alone, and one thing that measurably changed. What you lack is a second year, which nobody expects from a first-contract applicant.

Should I mention my edTPA score in the letter?

Mention the pass in the closing paragraph, and the score only if it is comfortably above the standard. Most edTPA handbooks carry 15 rubrics scored to a maximum of 75, with a recommended performance standard range of 37 to 42 points (edTPA Recommended Professional Performance Standard). A score near the floor is better left as a pass.

Can I name my cooperating teacher in the cover letter?

Yes, once you have asked. Naming both your cooperating teacher and your university supervisor turns your claims into two calls a principal can make without waiting for a reference request. Tell them which post you applied for, so the call is not a surprise.

What do I write if I have not been offered a placement yet?

Then you are applying for a placement, not a contract. Lead with your programme, certification area and logged field hours, name the grade levels and courses you want, and say what you can already do in a room: small-group reteaching, a unit you planned, a tutoring caseload. Be exact about your dates, because placements are scheduled against a calendar.
