HR Interview Questions (With Sample Answers) for HR Roles in 2026
HR interview questions for generalist, coordinator and assistant roles, with sample answers on complaints, confidentiality, FMLA, HRIS and tough managers.
On this pageWhat do HR interview questions really test?
Summary
HR interview questions for HR jobs test five areas: why you chose HR, how you handle an employee complaint, how you protect confidential information, what you know about core laws like the FMLA, and which HR systems you use. Answer with the process you would follow, a short real example and the point where you would involve legal or a senior leader.
HR interview questions for HR jobs test whether you can handle complaints fairly, keep information private, know the basic laws and run HR systems accurately. The best answers walk through a clear process, then prove it with a short example.
One note first: "HR interview" can also mean the screening round any candidate has with a recruiter. This guide covers the other meaning, interviews for HR generalist, coordinator and assistant roles.
If you want the general screening round instead, start with our list of common interview questions.
Quick answers by situation
| If they ask | What they want to hear | Example line |
|---|---|---|
| "Why HR?" | A real reason, not "I love people" | "I liked fixing the process that made new hires wait for pay." |
| "An employee reports harassment. What now?" | A fair, documented process | "I'd listen, document, protect them from retaliation and escalate." |
| "A manager asks for a coworker's file." | Confidentiality under pressure | "I'd share only what the policy allows for that business need." |
| "Who qualifies for FMLA?" | Core law basics | "12 months, 1,250 hours and 50 employees within 75 miles." |
| "Which HRIS have you used?" | Named tools, real tasks | "I ran onboarding and reports in Workday and Excel." |
| "Tell me about a hard conversation." | Calm, direct and kind | "I gave the facts first, then listened and set next steps." |
What do HR interview questions really test?
HR interview questions test the four qualities the BLS lists for HR specialists: communication, decision-making, detail and interpersonal skill. Hiring managers also check integrity, because HR handles private data and complaints. Expect motivation questions, complaint and investigation scenarios, law basics, HRIS questions and at least one test of how you treat a difficult manager.
The BLS lists four important qualities1 for HR specialists: communication, decision-making, detail and interpersonal skills. So each question below maps to one of them.
The BLS puts the first one simply.
Listening and speaking skills are essential for human resources specialists.

What hiring managers listen for
Most HR panels score you on four signals. Keep them in mind as you answer:
- Fairness. You hear both sides before you decide anything.
- Discretion. You share private details only with people who need them.
- Process. You document each step and follow policy every time.
- Business sense. You solve the problem, not just quote the rule.
O*NET lists integrity, attention to detail and dependability2 among the top work styles for HR specialists. It also names HR generalist and HR coordinator as common titles for the same job.
What are the most common HR interview questions?
The most common HR interview questions are "Tell me about yourself," "Why do you want to work in HR," "What does an HR department do" and "Why our company." Keep each answer under two minutes. Tie your background to fairness, accuracy and helping employees and managers, even if your past jobs sat outside HR.
These openers start most interviews for HR roles. Coursera's list also includes what the HR department does5, so prepare a one-line answer.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Give a short path: your last role, one HR-related win and why this team.
"I started as an office assistant and took over onboarding for a 60-person company.
I built a new-hire checklist that cut missed paperwork to almost zero.
Now I want a full HR coordinator role, and your growing team needs exactly that kind of structure."
2. Why do you want to work in HR?
Skip "I'm a people person." Instead, name a moment when you fixed a people problem with a better process.
3. What does an HR department do?
Keep it to one sentence. For example, "HR hires, pays, develops and protects employees, and it helps managers follow the law."
How do you answer employee complaint and investigation questions?
Complaint questions ask how you would respond when an employee reports harassment, discrimination or a bad manager. Describe a fair process: listen, document, protect the employee from retaliation, investigate both sides and close the loop. Say when you would bring in legal or a senior leader. Never promise total secrecy, because you may need to share facts to investigate.
The EEOC received 88,531 new charges of discrimination in FY 20243, an increase of more than 9% over FY 2023. So employers want HR staff who handle complaints well before they reach a regulator.
4. An employee reports harassment by their manager. What do you do?
Coursera lists a version of this question about a complaint against someone more senior5. Show a calm order of steps.
"First, I'd thank the employee, listen and write down the facts in their words.
Then I'd explain that I'll keep it as private as I can, but I may need to share facts to investigate.
Next, I'd take steps to protect them from retaliation and follow our investigation policy, with legal involved if needed."
5. How do you stay neutral in an investigation?
Explain that you interview each side with the same questions and decide on evidence. For instance, "I write my questions before each interview, so the accused and the accuser hear the same ones."
Don't promise secrecy
Many candidates say "I'd keep it completely confidential." HR leaders hear a red flag, because a real investigation needs to talk to witnesses. Say you'll keep it as private as possible and share only what the process needs.
What to say if they push back
Panels often play a senior manager who wants special treatment. Stay calm and keep the process fair.
- Thank them. Show respect for their concern before you say no.
- Name the policy. Point to the rule, not your personal view.
- Offer a path. Explain what you can do within the process.
- Escalate on facts. Bring in your HR lead with notes, not opinions.
[I'm the VP. Just tell me who filed the complaint about my team.]
"I understand you want to fix this fast, and I want that too.
I can't share who raised it, but I can walk you through the next steps and your part in them."
[And if I go to your boss?]
"That's fine. I'd brief my HR director myself, so she has the full picture."
Which HR law and policy questions should you expect?
HR law questions check the basics of the FMLA, anti-discrimination rules, overtime and record keeping. Entry-level roles rarely expect legal detail. Instead, panels want to hear that you know the main rules, check the source before you answer and involve legal for anything unclear. State the rule in one sentence and say how you applied it.

According to the Department of Labor, an employee must have worked for the employer for at least 12 months4, with at least 1,250 hours in that period. The employer must also have at least 50 employees at the site or within 75 miles.
| Question | Short correct answer |
|---|---|
| Who qualifies for FMLA? | 12 months, 1,250 hours, 50 employees within 75 miles. |
| What counts as retaliation? | Punishing someone for a complaint or for joining an investigation. |
| Exempt vs. non-exempt? | Non-exempt workers earn overtime; exempt workers meet set duty and pay tests. |
| What goes in a personnel file? | Job, pay and performance records, not medical files. |
| When do you call legal? | When a claim, a lawsuit threat or an unclear law comes up. |
7. Which questions can't an employer ask in an interview?
Name a few topics, like age, religion or pregnancy, and explain the safer, job-related version. Our guide to illegal interview questions has the full list.

HRIS questions ask which systems you used and how you keep data accurate. Name the HRIS, applicant tracking system and payroll tools you know, plus one task in each. Then describe how you check records, such as a monthly audit of new hires. Panels also ask about recruiting steps, so walk through how you would fill one open role.
O*NET tags Workday and Microsoft Excel as in-demand technologies2 for HR specialists. So expect at least one systems question, even for a coordinator role.
8. Which HR systems have you used?
Name each tool and what you did in it. For example, "I entered new hires in Workday, built a headcount pivot in Excel and posted jobs in Greenhouse."
9. How would you fill a hard-to-hire role?
The BLS says HR specialists recruit, screen, and interview job applicants1. So describe your full process from intake meeting to offer.
"First, I'd meet [the hiring manager] to agree on [the three must-have skills].
Then I'd post on [two channels where those people look] and ask our team for referrals.
Finally, I'd track [time to fill and pass-through rate] each week and adjust the plan."
Bring one HR metric
Pick one number you have moved, like time to fill or onboarding completion. Say what it was, what you changed and what it became. One real metric beats a list of tools.
What do HR specialists earn, and what is the job outlook?
HR specialists earned a median $75,940 in May 2025, according to the BLS. The BLS projects jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 73,700 openings a year. Most entry roles ask for a bachelor's degree, and certification is usually optional, though some employers prefer it.
The BLS reports a median pay of $75,940 a year in May 20251. It also projects about 73,700 openings each year through 2035.
Why the certification question comes up
The BLS notes that HR certification is usually voluntary1, though some employers prefer or require it. So if you plan to earn one, share your timeline.
Do
- Walk through a complaint in a fixed order.
- Say you'd protect the employee from retaliation.
- Name the HRIS and the task you did in it.
- Check the law before you answer a policy question.
Don’t
- Promise total secrecy in an investigation.
- Take sides before you hear both stories.
- Share a coworker's file without a business need.
- Say you chose HR because you "love people."
How should you prepare for HR interview questions?
Prepare by writing a complaint-process answer, a confidentiality answer and two STAR stories about hard conversations. Review FMLA basics and the systems in the posting. Then prepare two questions about the HR team's size and priorities, and practice your answers out loud before the day so they sound calm, not scripted.
Start with the posting. If it lists Workday, benefits or recruiting, plan one example for each. Our behavioral interview questions guide helps you build STAR stories.
- Script your complaint process Write the steps from first report to close-out and say them in under two minutes.
- Review the core laws Rehearse FMLA eligibility, retaliation and exempt versus non-exempt in one line each.
- Match the systems Pick one real task for each HRIS or tool the posting names.
- Prepare two STAR stories Choose a hard conversation and a process you improved.

Frequently asked questions
What are the most common HR interview questions?
For HR roles, the most common are "Why HR," "How would you handle a harassment complaint," "How do you keep information confidential" and "Which HR systems have you used." Most panels also ask one law question, often about FMLA.
How do I answer HR interview questions with no HR experience?
Use admin, customer service or team lead work where you onboarded people, handled complaints or kept records. Then show you know the basic process for complaints and confidentiality.
What is the difference between an HR interview and an HR job interview?
An HR interview often means the screening round a recruiter runs for any job. An HR job interview is for a role inside HR, such as a generalist or coordinator, and it adds law, investigation and systems questions.
Do I need an HR certification to get hired?
Usually not. The BLS says certification is usually voluntary, though some employers prefer or require it.
How do I answer confidentiality questions in an HR interview?
Say you share private information only with people who have a business need, and only as much as the task requires. Then give one example where you said no politely.
What should I wear to an HR interview?
Match the company's dress code or go one step up. HR staff often set the tone for the office, so a neat, professional look helps.
