Summary

A nanny resume is a one to two page document that records a private household employment history: which families, how long, how many children and at what ages, and the terms you worked under. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the employment record block most applicants leave out, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for childcare workers.

Nanny resume examples by experience level

In short, a nanny resume is a one to two page document that records a private household employment history: which families, how long, how many children and at what ages, and the terms you worked under.

In other words, a nanny is not a babysitter with longer hours. Instead, a nanny is a private household employee. As a result, the family that hires you is an employer with payroll obligations, a Form W-2 to file and, in most placements, a written work agreement to sign. The candidate who writes that relationship onto the page reads as someone who has done this properly before.

Resume guide for a nanny resume

For that reason, this guide and the corresponding nanny resume example will cover:

  • First, how to write a nanny resume, section by section
  • Then, why the household employment record belongs on the page, and where
  • Also, three adaptable summaries: first position, full-charge nanny and household manager
  • What families and placement agencies verify before they call you
  • Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a nanny resume

Overall, six sections: contact header, summary, position history by family, the household employment record, skills, and education with certifications. Tenure comes before duties, because every nanny resume in the pile claims the same duties. Above all, what separates them is how long each family kept the person writing it.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Position history by familyHow long did each family keep this person?Under the summary, reverse chronological
Household employment recordHave they worked on the books, under an agreement? Its own block, not hidden in bullets
Ages and number of childrenDoes their experience match my household? The header line of every position
Driving, travel and availabilityCan they do school runs and come on vacation?Skills block, stated plainly
Education and certificationsIs the safety training current?Last, with dates and expiry
Expert Tip

Say on the page that you have been paid on the books

A nanny is a household employee, not an independent contractor. IRS Publication 926, the Household Employer's Tax Guide for 2026, sets out the position: a family paying cash wages of $3,000 or more in 2026 to any one household employee must withhold and pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, federal unemployment tax applies once total cash wages to household employees reach $1,000 or more in any calendar quarter of 2025 or 2026, and the worker receives a Form W-2, not a Form 1099.

Most candidates never mention this. Write one line per position: "Paid on a W-2 household payroll." It tells a family you have a verifiable wage history, that you will not ask them to do something their accountant will flag, and that your previous employers can confirm your dates in writing. It also protects you, because unemployment insurance, Social Security credits and a mortgage application all run off a documented wage history.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. Placement agencies run candidates through applicant tracking systems before a placement director opens anything.

Choosing the best resume format for a nanny resume

Reverse chronological, always. Generally, one page for your first five years, two once you have three families behind you.

In contrast, functional and skills-based formats fail badly here. After all, a family reads a nanny resume for continuity first: which household, how many children, how long, and why it ended. A format that hides the timeline reads as a timeline the candidate would rather not discuss, and in private service that suspicion is expensive to recover from.

Two practical rules. Therefore, put the number of years in each position's header line, so nobody has to subtract dates. Also, never leave an unexplained gap: "family relocated to Denver, position ended by agreement" costs eight words and answers the question the reader was already forming.

Put the screening on the page. For example, in California, TrustLine is the registry of in-home and license-exempt childcare providers who have passed a background screening, administered by the California Department of Social Services and the nonprofit California Child Care Resource and Referral Network (TrustLine, 2026). If your state runs an equivalent registry, name it. If it does not, name the background check you have already paid for and the month it cleared, because the family will run one anyway.

Make use of a summary

In practice, four lines: your level, how many households and how long, the ages you carry, and the terms you work under.

First nanny position adaptable resume summary example

Nanny in a Sacramento private household, with three years in a licensed infant and toddler program before it, now caring full time for two children aged 11 months and 4 years. Work a guaranteed 45-hour week on a written agreement and a W-2 household payroll, and drive the older child to preschool in my own insured vehicle. Hold a Child Development Associate credential, a California Child Development Permit at Associate Teacher level, pediatric first aid and CPR, and current TrustLine registration.

Full-charge nanny adaptable resume summary example

Full-charge nanny with seven years across two Sacramento households: three years with a family of three children aged 2, 6 and 9, and four years before that with a family of two. Run the children's day end to end while both parents travel for work most weeks, including school runs, meals, laundry and rooms, appointments and the family calendar. Paid on a W-2 household payroll under a written work agreement with 45 guaranteed hours, and hold a Child Development Associate credential, Child Passenger Safety Technician certification and current TrustLine registration.

Household manager adaptable resume summary example

Household manager and nanny manager with 15 years in private service, including tenures of four and five years before the current post. Manage a two-nanny rota and a weekend sitter for a household with four children, own the household calendar, travel and vendor scheduling, and keep the work agreements and payroll paperwork straight with the family's accountant. Newborn Care Specialist trained, Child Passenger Safety Technician certified, TrustLine registered, with a valid passport and international travel experience.

Right vs wrong: the same nanny summary, twice

The right column can be checked. As a result, a family can call the previous household, confirm the dates, and confirm the payroll. By comparison, the left column is a mood, and a mood does not survive a reference call.

Outline your nanny experience

Household descriptor, city, dates, years, number of children and their ages at the start of the position, then three to five bullets. Never name the family. Instead, "Private Household, East Sacramento, CA" is the professional convention, and every placement agency reads it as a sign you understand discretion.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Full-Charge Nanny, Private Household, East Sacramento, CA, July 2023 to Present, 3 years. Three children, aged 2, 6 and 9 at the start of the position. Paid on a W-2 household payroll, 45 guaranteed hours a week under a written work agreement.

Run the household's child-facing day end to end while both parents work full time and travel most weeks: wake and bedtime routines, all weekday meals, two school runs, and five weekly activities.

Manage a tree nut allergy across the household: labeled food storage, epinephrine auto-injector training for both parents and the weekend sitter, and an allergy action plan filed at school and at every activity.

Drive roughly 120 miles a week in my own insured vehicle, with three car seats installed and checked to Child Passenger Safety Technician standard.

Send a written end-of-day log every evening and hold a scheduled 20-minute Sunday check-in with both parents, which is where schedule changes and travel requests are agreed.

Write the household employment record onto the page

Even so, this is the block almost nobody includes, and it is the one that separates a nanny from a sitter in the reader's mind.

Private household employment is a real employment relationship with paperwork attached, and most families have either been burned by a casual arrangement or warned about one by their accountant. Consequently, a short factual block showing you have worked inside that structure removes the family's largest single worry about hiring you.

Adaptable resume household employment record example

Employment basis: Household employee on a W-2 payroll in both positions, never a 1099 contractor. Previous employers can confirm dates, hours and wages in writing.

Work agreement: Signed written agreement in each position covering guaranteed hours, overtime rate, paid time off, sick leave, notice period, use of vehicle and travel terms.

Guaranteed hours: 45 a week, Monday to Friday, with overtime agreed in advance and paid at the agreed rate.

Tenure: 4 years with one family, 3 years with the current family, no position ended at the family's initiative.

Driving and travel: Clean California driving record, own insured vehicle, three car seats installed and checked, valid US passport to 2031, available for up to two weeks of international travel a year.

Confidentiality: Families listed by neighborhood only. References released with the family's written permission.

Seven lines, and each answers a question the family would otherwise have to ask in an interview.

The employment basis and the agreement. Write "household employee, W-2" rather than "self-employed" or "contractor", because a nanny working set hours in the family's home under the family's direction is an employee under IRS Publication 926 (2026). Then say you signed a written agreement and name what it covered. The three terms that break down most often are guaranteed hours, the overtime rate and the notice period.

Guaranteed hours. The most contested term in nanny employment. Guaranteed hours means the family pays the agreed weekly hours whether or not they use them, which is what makes the post a job rather than shift work. Saying your last position ran that way sets the expectation without you raising it in the first conversation.

Tenure per family. Four years, three years and two years reads as a professional. Eight months, seven months and a year reads as a risk, whatever the reason, so a short position needs its explanation in the same line.

Driving, travel and discretion. State the license, the record, whose vehicle it is and whether you install car seats. Child Passenger Safety Technician certification, issued under the National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program administered by Safe Kids Worldwide, is a real differentiator that few candidates hold. Give your passport expiry and how much travel you will take. And keep the family unnamed, because writing that convention onto the page shows an agency you already understand it.

Do

Write each position as Private Household plus the neighborhood and city. Give the number of children and their ages at the start of the post. State the guaranteed hours and the payroll basis. Put tenure in years in the header line. Name safety certifications with their issuing body and expiry. Say what travel and overnight work you will take.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not name the family, their employer, their address or their children. Do not describe an identifiable child's diagnosis or family circumstances; describe the work instead. Do not list yourself as self-employed for a post where you worked the family's hours in the family's home. Do not claim a lapsed certification without writing "expired" beside it. Do not round eleven months up to a year, because reference calls surface it.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Specifically, ten to fourteen entries in four groups: care and development, household, safety, and the practical terms of the job.

Adaptable resume skills example

Care and development: Infant and toddler routines, Potty training, Sleep training, Activity planning, Homework support, Positive behavior guidance

Household: Weekday meal planning and cooking, Allergy-safe kitchen management, Children's laundry and rooms, Family calendar and appointments

Safety: Pediatric first aid and CPR, Epinephrine auto-injector administration, Car seat installation and inspection, Water safety supervision, Childproofing

Practical: Clean driving record and own insured vehicle, Valid US passport, Available for overnights and family travel, Spanish and English, Written daily logs

Keep the safety group specific. For example, "CPR certified" is barely information; "Pediatric first aid, CPR and AED, American Red Cross, current to March 2027" is something the family can file.

List your education and certifications

Certifications first with their issuing body and expiry, then the registry you are on, then degrees.

However, a degree is not required for this work; the Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for childcare workers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). What is asked for over and over is current safety training and a clean background screening, so those go first and they carry dates.

Choose the right layout and design

In short, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph. Agency portals parse the file into a structured record before a human reads it, and two-column templates, text boxes and graphics are where parsing breaks.

Length is honest: one page until you have three families behind you, two after that. Name the file for yourself and the post: magdalena-villamar-full-charge-nanny-resume.pdf.

Nanny job market and outlook

Childcare work is a large occupation shrinking slowly in total while turning over enough people every year to keep hiring constant.

Statistical insight

One childcare worker in six already works in a private household

Private households account for 17 percent of childcare worker employment, the third largest employer of the occupation after child daycare services at 29 percent and self-employed workers at 24 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Childcare Workers, May 2025).

That is roughly one worker in six employed directly by a family rather than by a center, and it is the part of the occupation a nanny competes in.

Employment is projected to fall 2 percent between 2025 and 2035, a loss of 19,900 jobs, and yet BLS still projects about 150,300 openings a year, almost all replacing people who leave the occupation altogether. Turnover is what families are trying to avoid, which is why the two numbers they read first are how long you stayed at your last position and how long you stayed at the one before it.

What salary you can expect as a nanny

To begin with, the median wage for childcare workers was $16.82 an hour, or $34,980 a year, as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $11.66 an hour and the highest 10 percent more than $22.12 an hour (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

However, those figures cover the whole occupation, most of which works in centers. A full-charge nanny post sits at the upper end of that distribution and usually above it, because the household is buying sole charge and continuity rather than a ratio in a classroom.

In contrast, what moves the number in a household negotiation is narrow and predictable:

  • Guaranteed hours. A guaranteed 45-hour week at a stated rate is worth more than a higher hourly rate on variable hours, and it is the term to settle first.
  • Sole charge and number of children. Three children in sole charge is a different job from one child with a parent working at home, and it should be priced as one.
  • Driving. Using your own vehicle carries fuel, wear and insurance, so a mileage reimbursement or a stated allowance belongs in the agreement.
  • Certifications. Newborn Care Specialist training, Child Passenger Safety Technician certification and a current CDA are the three that families and agencies pay a premium for.
  • Travel and overnights. Price these separately and in advance, because they are not part of a 45-hour week.

Ask to be paid on payroll. A gross hourly rate on a W-2 looks smaller than the same money in cash, and it is worth considerably more once Social Security credits, unemployment eligibility and a documented income history are counted.

Key takeaways for a nanny resume

  1. First, lead with tenure: how many families, how many years each, in every position's header line.
  2. Then give the number of children and their ages at the start of each position.
  3. Next, write the household employment record: W-2 payroll, written agreement, guaranteed hours.
  4. Similarly, name families by neighborhood only, and say references are released with permission.
  5. Finally, put safety certifications with their issuing body and expiry, not just their names.
  6. State driving, vehicle, passport and travel availability, because they are screening questions.
  7. Keep it single column and parseable, since agency portals read it before a person does.

Nanny resume questions, answered

How long should a nanny resume be?

One page while you have one or two families behind you, two once you have three or more, because each position needs the household description, the ages, the hours and the terms. Never three pages, and never a one-page version that quietly drops a position.

Should I name the families I have worked for?

No. Write "Private Household" with the neighborhood and city. Families hire on discretion, and a resume that names a previous employer tells the reader exactly how you would treat them. Offer references separately, with the family's written permission, and say on the resume that this is what you do.

How do I show I was paid legally?

Write "paid on a W-2 household payroll" in each position, and be ready to produce a W-2 or a pay stub if asked. Under IRS Publication 926 for 2026, a family paying $3,000 or more in cash wages to one household employee owes Social Security and Medicare taxes, and the worker is issued a Form W-2 rather than a Form 1099. Families ask about this directly now, because their accountants have told them to.

What do I put on a nanny resume with no nanny experience?

Write the childcare work you do have as a job with the same structure: the setting, the age group, the ratio, the hours and how long you stayed. Center work, a preschool assistant post or an early childhood placement all count, and the ratio is the useful detail because it shows what you can handle alone. Then put your certifications and background screening on the page, because in a first-position search those get you the interview.

Do I need a certification to work as a nanny?

No state licenses nannies, and BLS gives a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for childcare workers (Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). What families and agencies check instead is current pediatric first aid and CPR, a clean background screening, a valid driver's license and, increasingly, a Child Development Associate credential. Those are fast to obtain and visible on a resume in a way that experience alone is not.

How do I explain a short position?

In the same line, factually, with no defensiveness. "Position ended when the family relocated to Denver, August 2024" or "Fixed 9-month post covering a parental leave" tells the reader everything they need. What creates doubt is a short tenure with nothing beside it, because the reader fills the space themselves and rarely fills it kindly.
