Summary

A child care resume is a one to two page document stating the age bands you have worked, the staff to child ratio you held and the group size you held it at, plus the health and safety training and background check behind you. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the ratio block most applicants leave out, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

Child Care resume examples by experience level

In short, a child care resume is a one to two page document that answers a director's first real question inside ten seconds: how many children, of what age, can you be left alone with, and in a group of what size.

In other words, everything else is supporting evidence for that one claim. A director building next month's staffing pattern is holding a room licensed for a fixed number of children, a payroll that only works if the pattern holds through the full open hours, and a licensing visit that counts heads. "Ran an infant room at 1:3 with a group size of 6 for two years" can go into that pattern this afternoon. "Loving and reliable with children of all ages" cannot go anywhere.

Resume guide for a child care resume

For that reason, this guide and the corresponding child care resume example will cover:

  • First, how to write a child care resume, section by section
  • Then, why age band, ratio and group size belong on the page as one fact
  • Also, three adaptable summaries: assistant, lead teacher and center director
  • In addition, the training and background check a licensor will look for
  • Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a child care resume

Overall, six sections: contact header, summary, a ratio and age band block, experience, education and credentials, and a skills snapshot. Generally, one page for your first several years, two once you have run a room of your own or a building.

The ratio block sits above experience because it is the fact every later line is read against. Four years in child care means something different in a family child care home with six children than in a center with six classrooms, and a job title does not say which you did.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Ages, ratios and group sizesWhich room can I put this person in tomorrow?Directly under the summary, as its own block
ExperienceWhat did they build or fix in a room, with a number attached?Reverse chronological
Background checkCan this person start, or am I waiting six weeks? One line, with the status and the date
Expert Tip

Name your health and safety training by topic, not by hours

Every state taking Child Care and Development Fund money must require health and safety training on a named list of topics. The federal rule, 45 CFR 98.41, names eleven: infectious disease prevention and control including immunizations; sudden infant death syndrome prevention and safe sleep; medication administration consistent with standards for parental consent; food and allergic reaction emergencies; building and premises safety including bodies of water and vehicular traffic; prevention of shaken baby syndrome, abusive head trauma and child maltreatment; emergency preparedness and response planning; hazardous materials handling and biocontaminant disposal; precautions in transporting children; pediatric first aid and CPR; and recognition and reporting of child abuse and neglect (eCFR, 45 CFR 98.41, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Most applicants write "completed required health and safety training." A director cannot use that. Write the topics and the year, and mark what expires.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker first. Center chains and school districts parse applications into a system before anyone opens the file.

Choosing the best resume format for a child care resume

Reverse chronological, single column. One page until you have run a room for several years or managed staff; then two.

Functional formats fail badly here. Child care hiring is read for continuity and for gaps, because ratio coverage depends on people turning up and licensing files follow employment dates. After all, a layout that hides the timeline reads as a timeline worth hiding.

Even so, with no paid center work yet, keep the same shape and let the experience block hold babysitting, a church nursery, a summer program or a practicum, each with ages and numbers.

Therefore, put the age band and ratio in the header line under your name. Indeed, it costs one line and it is the only thing in the header that changes what the reader does next.

Make use of a summary

In practice, three sentences: the setting, age band, ratio and group size you hold; one thing you built or fixed with a number on it; and the credentials that let a director count you in the pattern.

Assistant teacher adaptable resume summary example

Child care assistant teacher with two years in a licensed infant and toddler room, working a 1:3 ratio at a group size of 6 and covering the 1:4 pattern at a group size of 8 when rooms combine at the end of the day. Hold a Child Development Associate credential in the Infant-Toddler setting, pediatric first aid and CPR, and the full health and safety pre-service training required of child care staff. Lead the room's daily health check and the diapering and handwashing routine, which drew no finding at the last inspection.

Lead teacher adaptable resume summary example

Lead preschool teacher with eight years in licensed center-based care, currently running a 3 to 5 year old room at a 1:8 ratio and a group size of 16 with two assistants. Rebuilt the kindergarten transition portfolio from an informal file into a documented process now used across all four preschool rooms, and moved family conference attendance from 54% to 91% over three years. Hold Child Development Associate credentials in both the Infant-Toddler and Preschool settings and cover the infant room at 1:3 as back-up opener.

Center director adaptable resume summary example

Child care center director running a six-classroom licensed center for 94 children from six weeks to five years, with 21 staff and a staffing pattern built room by room against ratio and group size rather than total head count. Rewrote the schedule so every room holds its licensed ratio across the full open hours, closing 3 of the 4 findings at the last licensing visit. Manage the background check cycle, the annual health and safety training plan and a $1.4 million operating budget.

Right vs wrong: the same child care summary, twice

On the other hand, the right column can be put into a staffing pattern and asked follow-up questions. In contrast, the left column cannot, and a director reading thirty files between naptime and pickup wants the one that can.

Outline your child care experience

Adaptable resume employment history example

Lead Preschool Teacher, Pualani Children's Center, Honolulu, HI, January 2021 to Present Room: 3 to 5 years, 1:8 ratio, group size 16, two assistant teachers

Run a 16-child preschool room at a 1:8 ratio, including the opening shift and the combined late room from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.

Rebuilt the kindergarten transition portfolio into a documented process with a family conference, an observation record and a handoff summary, now used across all four preschool rooms.

Moved family conference attendance from 54% to 91% over three years by adding two evening slots and a phone option for families on a second shift.

Mentor two assistant teachers through their Child Development Associate coursework, and serve as back-up opener, holding the infant room at 1:3 until the second adult arrives.

State the ages, ratios and group sizes you have actually run

Even so, this is the block almost nobody writes, and it is what makes your experience comparable to the next applicant's.

Ratio alone is not enough, because ratio and group size are separate limits and a room has to satisfy both. Hawaii's infant and toddler center rules are a clean example: they pair each permitted ratio with its own maximum group size rather than setting one number, so six weeks to twelve months can run at 1:3 with a group of 6 or at 1:4 with a group of 8, and twelve to twenty-four months can run at 1:3 with 6, 1:4 with 8 or 1:5 with 10 (Hawaii Administrative Rules 17-895.1-36, via the ACF National Database of Child Care Licensing Regulations, retrieved 17 September 2026). For example, two people can both write "1:4 with toddlers" and have run rooms of very different size.

Child care ratios by state and age

However, ratios are set state by state, not federally. The federal child care consumer site says plainly that federal law requires states and territories to establish these standards, and points readers to the national recommendations instead (childcare.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026). Specifically, those come from Caring for Our Children, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Public Health Association and the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education. In particular, its center table is the reference point most directors know:

AgeRecommended child:staff ratioRecommended maximum group size
12 months and under3:16
13 to 35 months4:18
3 year olds7:114
4 year olds8:116
5 year olds8:116
6 to 8 year olds10:120
9 to 12 year olds12:124

Source: Caring for Our Children, 4th edition, standard 1.1.1.2, Ratios for Large Family Child Care Homes and Centers (nrckids.org, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Next, write your own history in the same shape, three lines:

Adaptable resume ratio and age band block example

Ages and ratios run: Infants 6 weeks to 12 months at 1:3, group size 6. Toddlers 12 to 24 months at 1:4, group size 8. Preschool 3 to 5 years at 1:8, group size 16.

Also covered: mixed-age late room, 18 months to 5 years, 1:6 at group size 12. Opening shift solo coverage until the second adult arrives.

Not yet run: school-age care, 6 to 12 years. Trained and willing to cover.

Three lines, because they answer three questions: what you have held day after day, what you can cover when the building is short, and where the honest edge of your experience is. The third line earns more than it costs: a resume that marks its own boundary reads as one written by someone who understands a licensed ratio.

Add one more sentence if it is true: whether you can open or close a building alone, and the hours. That matters because solo coverage at the ends of the day is the hardest slot to fill in almost every center.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

In brief, twelve to eighteen entries in three groups: care and instruction, health and safety, and the systems the center runs on.

Adaptable resume skills example

Care and instruction: Infant and toddler routines, Preschool curriculum planning, Early literacy blocks, Individualized observation records, Kindergarten transition portfolios, Positive guidance

Health and safety: Daily health checks, Safe sleep practice, Diapering and handwashing procedure, Medication administration with parental consent, Food allergy response, Evacuation drills, Abuse recognition and reporting

Systems and family communication: Procare, Brightwheel, Daily report logs, Ratio and attendance tracking, Family conference scheduling, Subsidy and enrollment paperwork

Also, keep the health and safety group aligned with the 45 CFR 98.41 topic list. After all, a director skimming that column is checking off the topics their own state training covers.

List your education and certifications

Credentials first with the setting and expiry, then the background check line, then degrees.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Child Development Associate (CDA), Preschool setting, Council for Professional Recognition, awarded 2020, renewed 2026. Built on 120 clock hours of professional education across the eight CDA subject areas, at least 10 in each, and 480 hours of work experience with children ages 3 to 5 in a center-based setting.

Child Development Associate (CDA), Infant-Toddler setting, Council for Professional Recognition, awarded 2017, renewed 2023.

Pediatric First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, American Red Cross, current through 2028.

Health and safety training complete on all eleven required topics, including safe sleep, medication administration, food allergy response and abuse recognition; refreshed annually.

Comprehensive background check complete and current: FBI fingerprint check, National Sex Offender Registry, and state criminal, sex offender and child abuse and neglect registries.

Associate of Science, Early Childhood Education, Honolulu Community College, Honolulu, HI, 2016.

Two details there are worth understanding rather than copying. Similarly, the CDA is valid for three years, and renewal takes 4.5 continuing education units, 45 clock hours, or a three credit hour college course in early childhood education or child development (Council for Professional Recognition, cdacouncil.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). The setting matters as much as the credential, because the Council issues it separately for Infant-Toddler, Preschool, Family Child Care, Home Visitor and Birth-to-Five.

Meanwhile, the background check line matters for a plainer reason. Child care staff have to clear the checks defined in 45 CFR 98.43: an FBI fingerprint check through Next Generation Identification, the National Crime Information Center National Sex Offender Registry, and state criminal, sex offender and child abuse and neglect registries in the current state and in states of prior residence, repeated at least once every five years (eCFR, 45 CFR 98.43, retrieved 17 September 2026). Saying yours is complete and current, with the year, tells a director whether you are a start date or a six week wait.

Choose the right layout and design

In summary, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph. That is because center chains and district portals parse these into a structured record, and text boxes, icon tables and two column layouts are where parsing breaks.

Do

Put the age band, ratio and group size in the header and again as their own block. Give every experience bullet a number. Name the health and safety topics you trained on. State the background check status with a year. Say whether you can open or close alone. Mark the age bands you have not yet held on your own.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "all ages" when you mean you covered a combined room twice. Do not list a CDA without its setting, since Infant-Toddler and Preschool are different credentials. Do not quote a ratio without its group size. Do not claim a state licensing requirement you have not checked. Do not use a two column template for a chain's application portal.

Child care job market and outlook

In short, a very large occupation, projected to shrink slightly, with enormous replacement hiring. That combination is the whole market.

Statistical insight

A shrinking occupation hiring 150,300 people a year

Childcare workers are projected to decline 2 percent between 2025 and 2035, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics still projects about 150,300 openings a year on average over the decade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections, retrieved 17 September 2026). Nearly all of those openings replace people leaving the occupation.

So getting an interview is easy and getting the room you want is not. The applicant who can be placed in a specific licensed room without training up first gets the better shift, the better age band and the top of the range rather than the bottom.

Instead, read that table as a map of where the resume changes shape. Center and school-based work is hired on ratio, credential and licensing history; by comparison, private household work is hired on availability and references, which is a different document.

What salary you can expect in child care

To begin with, the median hourly wage for childcare workers was $16.82 as of May 2025, which works out to $34,980 a year (BLS, May 2025, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Moreover, the published industry medians show where the money differs. For instance, local elementary and secondary schools paid a median of $18.15 an hour, child daycare services $16.43, and religious, grantmaking, civic and professional organizations $16.23 (BLS, May 2025). School-based programs sit above center-based care and usually carry a school calendar and a pay schedule rather than a rate negotiated one applicant at a time.

Consequently, inside a single center, what a resume can move is the age band, the role and the credential. Infant rooms run at the tightest ratios and are hardest to staff, so infant-qualified applicants have leverage preschool-qualified applicants do not. As a result, lead teacher pay sits above assistant pay in nearly every center that distinguishes the two, and the distinction is usually written as a credential plus a documented number of hours with the age group.

Many states also attach a wage supplement or a retention bonus to staff credentials. Those payments are made against documentation, so a credential listed with its setting, award year and renewal date makes you countable on the day the center files rather than at the next annual cycle.

Key takeaways for a child care resume

  1. First, lead with the age band, ratio and group size; everything else is read against it.
  2. Also, never give a ratio without the group size it was held at; they are separate limits.
  3. Then split the ratio block into what you have run, what you can cover, and what you have not held alone.
  4. Next, put a number in every experience bullet: children, weeks, a rate that moved, a licensing outcome.
  5. In addition, name your health and safety training by topic, using the federal topic list as your wording.
  6. Say your background check is complete and current, with the year, because it is a start date.
  7. Finally, list the CDA with its setting, not just as "CDA", and keep the renewal date visible.

Child care resume questions, answered

How long should a child care resume be?

One page for your first several years. Two once you have led a room, mentored staff through a credential or managed a building. A director wants a ratio, a credential, a background check status and a timeline without gaps, and all four fit on one page.

What do I put on a child care resume with no center experience?

Write the informal work as a job with numbers attached: babysitting with ages and regular hours, a church nursery with the group size, a summer program with the child count and the ratio. Then list pediatric first aid and CPR if you have them, and whatever training your state requires before a first day.

Do I need a CDA to work in child care?

Not to start. The Bureau of Labor Statistics gives the typical entry-level education for childcare workers as a high school diploma or equivalent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, retrieved 17 September 2026). But the CDA is usually what separates an assistant from a lead teacher, and it is issued by setting, so Preschool and Infant-Toddler are different qualifications. It takes 120 clock hours of professional education and 480 hours of work experience with the age group, and renews every three years (Council for Professional Recognition, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Should I put the ratio on my resume if my state's ratio is generous?

Yes, with the group size beside it. The point is not to claim a hard number, it is to let a reader compare you to the next applicant. Ratios differ by state and each permitted ratio usually carries its own maximum group size, so a reader elsewhere cannot reconstruct your experience without both figures.

How do I show results in child care work when there are no test scores?

Use what the center already tracks: enrollment and retention in your room, family conference attendance, licensing findings closed, staff you mentored through a credential, transition times you shortened, incident counts, or a benchmark the receiving school uses at kindergarten entry. Give the before, the after and the period.
