Summary

A babysitter resume is a single-page document that answers two questions fast: when are you free, and what safety training stands behind you. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the availability grid that most sitters never put on the page, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for childcare workers.

Babysitter resume examples by experience level

A babysitter resume is a single-page document that answers two questions before anything else: when are you actually free, and what safety training stands behind the offer.

Sitting is on-demand work. After all, nobody is hiring you for a career; they are hiring you for Friday at seven, or for the Tuesday afternoon their regular arrangement fell through. In other words, the resume is not competing on depth of experience. It is competing on schedule fit, and then on whether a parent can hand over the house without a second thought.

Resume guide for a babysitter resume

For that reason, this guide and the corresponding babysitter resume example will cover:

  • First, how to write a babysitter resume that fits on one page
  • Then, the availability grid, and why "flexible" is the weakest word you can use
  • Also, three adaptable summaries: student sitter, standing roster and specialist
  • Which safety credentials parents actually check, and how to date them
  • Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a babysitter resume

Overall, five blocks: contact header, summary, availability grid, sitting history with age bands, and credentials. One page, always.

In general, sitting resumes fail by trying to look like career resumes. For example, a parent scanning on a phone at 9pm wants to reach your Friday availability in under ten seconds, and a page of paragraphs puts it out of reach.

BlockWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Availability gridCan you cover the slot I need?Immediately under the summary
Age bands coveredHave you handled a baby, or only school-age children? In the grid block and again in the history
Repeat families and bookingsDo other parents book this person twice?A single line of counts
Safety credentialsInfant CPR, first aid, and how recent? Its own block, with expiry dates
TransportCan you collect from school, or do you need a ride?Header line, one clause
Expert Tip

Replace the word flexible with an actual grid

"Flexible availability" is the single most common line on a sitter resume and it carries no information. Every sitter writes it, including the ones who cannot do Fridays.

A grid does the opposite. It makes a promise narrow enough to be useful, which is what lets a parent choose you without a phone call.

Write it as a small table with days across and three rows: after school, evening, and overnight or weekend. Mark each cell as regular, available on request, or not available. Then add two lines beneath it: how much notice you need for a last-minute booking, and the dates you are away.

The version that wins bookings is specific and honest. "Weeknights from 4pm, every Friday and Saturday evening, and Sundays on request. 90 minutes notice for last-minute cover. Unavailable 12 to 22 December." A parent can act on that immediately.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker if you are applying to a sitter agency, a drop-in childcare program or an event childcare provider, because those employers do parse applications into a system.

Choosing the best resume format for a babysitter resume

Reverse chronological for the history block, but the availability grid comes before it, and the whole thing stays on one page.

Of course, that is the opposite of the advice you will read for most jobs, and it is correct here for a simple reason: a sitter's history is not the differentiator. For instance, five parents can all say they have sat for three years. What varies between them is which evenings they can cover, which ages they will take, and whether they hold current infant CPR.

Never run to two pages. If the page is full, cut the oldest bookings, not the grid. Similarly, a two-page sitter resume reads as someone applying for a job that does not exist.

Above all, the headline under your name is doing the most work on the page. Put the age band and the time band in it, because those two facts decide whether a parent keeps reading, and neither survives being described as flexible.

Make use of a summary

In practice, three lines: the ages you cover, the slots you cover, and the credential with its expiry date. No career narrative; there is no career here yet, and pretending otherwise weakens the page.

Student sitter adaptable resume summary example

Second-year student sitter in Greensboro covering ages 2 to 11, available weeknights from 4pm, every Friday and Saturday evening, and Sundays on request, with 90 minutes notice for last-minute cover. Twenty-two bookings across six families in the past year, four of whom book me regularly. Standing roster adaptable resume summary example

Babysitter with a standing roster of nine Greensboro families, covering infants from 3 months through age 12, plus two households with three children each. Regular Tuesday and Thursday after-school cover, every Friday and Saturday evening, and overnights on two weekends a month, with one hour notice for emergency cover. About 190 bookings in the past year, 86 percent of them repeat families, and a 4.9 star profile across 61 reviews on the platform I take new families through. American Red Cross Advanced Child Care Training and Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED current to June 2027.

Specialist sitter adaptable resume summary example

Specialist sitter and sitter coordinator covering newborns, twins and overnight care, with eleven years of bookings across 40 Greensboro families. Take infants from 2 weeks, hold two standing overnight slots a week, and coordinate a referral book of six vetted sitters for last-minute cover I cannot take myself. Trained in safe sleep practice, infant feeding and supporting children with sensory and communication needs, with American Red Cross Advanced Child Care Training and Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED current to June 2027.

Right vs wrong: the same babysitter summary, twice

On the other hand, every line on the right can be acted on tonight. In contrast, every line on the left needs a phone call first, and the parent whose plans start in three hours is not making that call.

Outline your babysitting experience

Instead, group it; do not list it booking by booking. After all, a sitter with two hundred bookings cannot write them out, and a sitter with twelve should not try.

Then write each family as a line: age band, how long you have sat for them, roughly how often, and anything unusual you handle. Also, never name the family or the children.

Babysitter, private families, Greensboro, NC, 2021 to Present. Standing roster of nine families, roughly 190 bookings a year.

Four families on regular weekly slots: two Tuesday and Thursday after-school covers from 3:30 to 6:30, and two Friday or Saturday evenings from 5pm to midnight.

Two households with three children each, ages 2 to 10, handled solo including dinner, bath and bedtime.

Take infants from 3 months: bottle feeds, safe sleep setup, and a written feed and nap log left for the parents.

Two overnight weekends a month, arriving at bedtime and handing back after breakfast, with the parents' emergency contacts and medical consent forms held on file.

86 percent of last year's bookings were repeat families. Two cancellations in three years, both with more than 48 hours notice.

Publish an availability grid and the credentials behind it

Even so, this is the block that decides sitter bookings, and almost nobody puts it on a resume.

In fact, a sitter is not hired on an employment record. A sitter is hired because a specific evening is uncovered and someone safe can take it. In short, the grid answers the first half of that; the credential block answers the second.

Last-minute cover: one hour notice, within 20 miles of Greensboro.

Away: 12 to 22 December 2026, and the last week of July.

Ages covered: infants from 3 months, toddlers, preschool and school age to 12. Comfortable with up to three children in one booking.

Transport: Own car, two booster seats fitted, clean North Carolina license, will do school and activity pickups.

Now the second half. Next, parents check four things, and they check them in this order.

Infant and child CPR and first aid, with a date. This is the credential that matters most and the one most often written badly. Name the course and the issuer, and give the expiry rather than the year you took it. The American Red Cross issues digital certificates for its online Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED course that are valid for two years (American Red Cross, 2026), so a certificate from 2023 has lapsed and a parent who knows that will notice.

Babysitting courses, background checks and ratings

A structured babysitting course. The American Red Cross runs Babysitting Basics, open from age 11, and Advanced Child Care Training, which covers care inside and outside the home along with leadership, child behavior, safety and professionalism (American Red Cross, 2026). Neither is a state license and the Red Cross says plainly that Advanced Child Care Training is not intended as certification for state-licensed childcare providers. They are still worth listing, because they show a parent that somebody taught you the emergency material rather than you picking it up.

A background check. Many sitter platforms run one and show the date on your profile. Write the month it cleared. If you have never had one, a state criminal record check is inexpensive and it moves you ahead of most of the file.

Repeat bookings and ratings. This is the sitter equivalent of a reference, and it is stronger than a reference because it is a count rather than an opinion. Put three numbers on the page: total bookings in the past year, the share that were repeat families, and how many families have booked you more than five times. If you work through a platform, add the rating and the number of reviews behind it, because a 5.0 from two reviews is not the same claim as a 4.9 from sixty.

Do

Publish a real grid with days and slots. State the notice you need for last-minute cover. Give the exact age band, starting with the youngest you will take. Date every credential with its expiry, not its issue year. Count your repeat families. Say what transport you have and how far you travel. Update the grid before you send the file and put the update month on it.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "flexible" or "available most evenings". Do not claim ages you have not actually sat for; an infant is a different job from a nine-year-old and parents can tell in five minutes. Do not list a lapsed CPR certificate without writing "expired". Do not name the families or the children, on the resume or in a platform profile. Do not pad a short history with unpaid family sitting listed as professional bookings; write it as what it was.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Eight to twelve entries in three groups, kept short because the grid is carrying the page.

Adaptable resume skills example

Care by age: Infant bottle feeds and safe sleep, Toddler routines and transitions, Preschool play and activities, Homework support to age 12, Multiple children in one booking

Safety: Pediatric first aid, CPR and AED, Choking response, Allergy and auto-injector awareness, Emergency contact and consent forms, Water and playground supervision

Working with parents: Written feed and nap logs, Handover notes after every booking, House rules and screen limits kept as set, Confidentiality about the household

List your education and certifications

Certifications first, with issuer and expiry. Education comes after, and briefly, because no parent is hiring on your GPA.

Adaptable resume certifications example

Pediatric (Child and Baby) First Aid, CPR and AED, American Red Cross, June 2025, digital certificate current to June 2027

Choose the right layout and design

In short, one page, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, with the grid as the only table. Parents read these on a phone more often than on a laptop, so keep the line lengths short and the headings obvious.

Do not use a template with graphics, a photograph or a colored sidebar. Some of these files go to sitter agencies that parse them into a system, and the rest go to a parent reading a grid on a five-inch screen. Both are better served by plain text. Name the file for yourself and the slot you are pitching: consuelo-threadgate-babysitter-evenings-weekends.pdf.

Babysitter job market and outlook

Sitting sits inside a large childcare occupation with a quarter of its workers self-employed; in fact, that is exactly where on-demand sitting lives.

Statistical insight

A quarter of childcare workers are self-employed

Self-employed workers make up 24 percent of childcare worker employment, second only to child daycare services at 29 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Childcare Workers, May 2025).

That is the part of the occupation a babysitter belongs to, and it explains why sitter hiring works the way it does. There is no employer, no posting and no interview panel. There is a parent with an uncovered evening and a shortlist of names.

The wage spread in the same cycle shows what the shortlist is really sorting on: the lowest 10 percent of childcare workers earned less than $11.66 an hour and the highest 10 percent more than $22.12 an hour, against a median of $16.82 (BLS, May 2025). Sitters reach the upper half by being bookable at the hours parents actually need and by holding credentials the parent did not have to ask for twice.

What salary you can expect as a babysitter

To begin with, the median wage for childcare workers was $16.82 an hour as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $11.66 an hour and the highest 10 percent above $22.12 an hour (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Sitting is priced per booking rather than per year, so the useful question is what lifts your rate inside that band:

  • The slot. Friday and Saturday evenings, school holidays, public holidays and overnights pay above a Tuesday afternoon, because supply is thin exactly when demand is high.
  • The youngest age you take. Sitters who will take an infant under six months are a much smaller pool than sitters who will take a five-year-old.
  • Number of children. Three children in one booking is a different job from one, and it is fair to price it that way.
  • Notice. Last-minute cover is worth a premium, and saying you can take it with an hour's notice is what gets you called first.
  • Credentials. Current infant CPR, a structured childcare course and a cleared background check are the three that let a parent justify the higher rate to themselves.
  • Driving. A sitter with a car and fitted booster seats can do the school run and the activity pickup, which turns a two-hour booking into a four-hour one.

Therefore, set one rate, write it down and apply it to everyone. Sitters lose more money to quiet inconsistency across families than to any single rate that was too low.

Key takeaways for a babysitter resume

  1. First, put a real availability grid on the page, with days, slots and an update date.
  2. Then name the youngest age you will take, not "all ages".
  3. Give three counts: bookings last year, share that were repeat families, and families who booked more than five times.
  4. Date every credential with its expiry, because infant CPR certificates lapse.
  5. State your notice window for last-minute cover; it is often the whole reason you get called.
  6. Finally, say what transport you have and how far you will travel.
  7. Keep it to one page and update the grid before every send.

Babysitter resume questions, answered

How long should a babysitter resume be?

One page, and there is no version of this job that needs two. The grid, the counts and the credentials fit in half a page; the rest is history you can trim. A sitter resume that runs to two pages signals that the writer has not worked out what parents read for.

What do I put on a babysitter resume as a teenager with no paid bookings?

Put the training first, because it is the part you can control. American Red Cross Babysitting Basics is open from age 11 and Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED can be taken alongside it (American Red Cross, 2026). Then write the unpaid care honestly: siblings, cousins, a neighbor's children, a summer camp or a church nursery, with ages and hours. Then publish your grid. A fourteen-year-old with current CPR and a clear Saturday afternoon is a genuinely useful person to a parent.

Should I put my platform rating on my resume?

Yes, with the number of reviews behind it. A 4.9 average across 61 reviews is evidence; a 5.0 across two is noise, and a parent who books through platforms knows the difference. Add the count of repeat families as well, because that is the number a rating cannot fake.

Do I need a certification to babysit?

No state licenses babysitters, and BLS gives a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for childcare workers (Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). In practice parents screen on current infant and child CPR and first aid before anything else, so that is the one to hold and to keep in date. A structured babysitting course and a cleared background check are the next two.

How do I show experience without naming families?

Describe the household, never the people. "A household with three children aged 2 to 10" or "a family with a child who uses a communication device" gives a parent everything useful and identifies nobody. Counts do the rest: how many families, how many bookings, how many repeats. If a family is happy to be contacted, offer them as a reference separately rather than naming them on the page.

How often should I update my availability grid?

Before every send, and at minimum at the start of each term or season. A grid with a September date on it in March is worse than no grid, because it tells a parent the file was not written for them. Put the update month directly under the table so it is obvious the grid is live.
