Summary

A social worker resume is a one to two page document that names your license tier, the state board that issued it, and the supervised clinical hours you have accrued toward independent practice. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the hours block most applicants leave off, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for the occupation.

Social Worker resume examples by experience level

In short, a social worker resume is a one to two page document that names your license tier, the state board that issued it, your practice specialty, and the number of supervised clinical hours you have banked toward independent licensure.

That last number is the one almost nobody writes down, and it is the one a clinical director is doing arithmetic about while they read. It says whether you can bill, whether they must supply a supervisor, and how many months until you can sign your own assessments.

Resume guide for a social worker resume

For that reason, this guide and the corresponding social worker resume example will cover:

  • First, how to write a social worker resume, section by section
  • Then, the license and hours block that belongs above your experience
  • Also, three adaptable summaries: bachelor's level, graduate level accruing hours, and independently licensed
  • In addition, what field placement hours are worth, and how to write them
  • Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a social worker resume

Overall, six sections: contact header, summary, licensure and supervised hours, practice experience, education and field placements, and skills. Generally, one page at the bachelor's and graduate license stage, two once you are independently licensed and supervising.

Licensure sits above experience because it is a gate rather than an accomplishment. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook states that all states require clinical social workers to be licensed, and that some states also require a license or credential for nonclinical social workers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Social Workers, updated 27 August 2026).

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
License and hoursWhat tier is this person, in which state, and can they practice unsupervised?Directly under the summary
Supervised clinical hoursHow many months until they are independent, and who pays for supervision?Inside the licensure block, as a number over a denominator
Practice experienceWhat population, what setting, what interventions, what changed?Reverse chronological, with numbers
Education and field placementsWas the program CSWE accredited, and how many placement hours?Include the accreditation and the hour count
Expert Tip

Write your supervised hours as a fraction, with a date attached

A hiring manager at an outpatient clinic is deciding two things at once: can you carry billable clinical work now, and if not, what does it cost to get you there. Neither is answered by "working toward clinical licensure". Write the arithmetic: "3,240 of the 4,000 supervised practice hours required by the Minnesota Board of Social Work, with 164 of the required 200 supervision hours logged; eligible to sit the ASWB Clinical examination in March 2027."

The requirement is genuinely state-specific. Minnesota, for example, publishes four standard titles, LSW, LGSW, LISW and LICSW, and requires 200 hours of supervision over 4,000 to 8,000 hours of practice for the independent clinical license, against 100 hours over 4,000 for the other three (Minnesota Board of Social Work, Requirements for Social Work Licensure in Minnesota, March 2026). Cite your own board, not a general claim.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit it. County agencies, hospital systems and large nonprofits nearly all parse applications into a structured record before a person opens the file.

Choosing the best resume format for a social worker resume

Reverse chronological, with one exception. If your license is the newest thing about you, put a licensure block above the work history and keep the history itself chronological underneath.

In contrast, functional resumes fail here for a specific reason: an unexplained gap or a short stay is something a supervisor will ask about, and hiding the timeline guarantees they will. In other words, two pages are normal once you are independently licensed or carrying program responsibility, and one page is right below that.

Also, put the license number and the expiry on the page. Human resources verifies it against the public board register either way, and the file that lets them do it in ten seconds clears credentialing faster. If you hold licenses in two states, list both.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: license tier and state, practice specialty and setting, supervised hours if you are still accruing them, and one outcome with a number on it.

Bachelor's level social worker adaptable resume summary example

Graduate level social worker adaptable resume summary example

Licensed Graduate Social Worker in hospital medicine and emergency department practice, holding Minnesota LGSW #MN-LGSW-31204 and an MSW from the University of Minnesota Duluth with 912 field placement hours. Have accrued 3,240 of the 4,000 supervised practice hours Minnesota requires for the independent clinical license, with 164 of the required 200 supervision hours logged and the ASWB Clinical examination scheduled. Practice specialty is healthcare social work: discharge planning, crisis assessment and substance use referral.

Independently licensed social worker adaptable resume summary example

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with ten years of Minnesota practice across county child protection, hospital social work and outpatient behavioral health, holding LICSW #MN-LICSW-38660. Supervise six graduate-level social workers through their post-degree clinical hours and lead a 340-client outpatient behavioral health program. Rebuilt the program's intake and clinical documentation standard, which moved the median wait from referral to first clinical appointment from 31 days to 9.

On the other hand, the right column can be credentialed, scheduled and budgeted. The left column cannot, even though the person reading is doing all three.

Outline your social work experience

Next, list the agency, setting, city, population served, and dates. Then three to five bullets, each naming a population or an intervention and carrying a number.

Above all, never name, initial or describe an identifiable client. Describe the work and the group. A resume that leaks a recognizable detail fails an ethics screen before a skills screen.

Clinical Social Work Supervisor and Behavioral Health Program Lead, Birchmont Behavioral Health, Duluth, MN, September 2024 to Present

Lead an outpatient behavioral health program serving roughly 340 clients a year across adult mental health, co-occurring substance use, and older adult services.

Provide weekly licensing supervision to six graduate-level social workers accruing post-degree clinical hours; four have reached the Minnesota clinical hour threshold under this structure.

Rebuilt the intake and clinical documentation standard so assessment, safety plan and treatment plan are completed in one visit; the median wait from referral to first clinical appointment moved from 31 days to 9 over four quarters.

Chair the program's clinical review committee and write the annual quality report submitted to the county behavioral health contract.

Carry a reduced direct clinical assignment to keep clinical currency and model documentation standards for supervisees.

Lead with your license tier, your state and your supervised clinical hours

This is the block that decides whether your file moves, and it is the block most social work resumes reduce to one word.

Social work licensure runs in tiers; as a result, the tier defines your scope of practice. The letters differ by state, so give the letters your own board uses and then say what tier they are.

TierTypical entry pointWhat a hiring manager reads into it
Bachelor's level licenseCSWE-accredited BSW plus the ASWB Bachelors examination, written LSW, LBSW or LSWA depending on the stateCase-carrying generalist practice. Can assess, plan, refer, document and testify, but not provide independent clinical diagnosis or therapy.
Graduate level licenseCSWE-accredited MSW plus the ASWB Masters examination, written LMSW, LGSW or LSW depending on the stateCan do clinical work under supervision. The agency must supply or pay for a qualified supervisor until the hours are complete.
Independent clinical licenseMSW plus supervised post-degree clinical hours plus the ASWB Clinical examination, written LCSW, LICSW, LISW-CP or LCSW-CIndependent diagnosis and treatment, own signature on assessments, billable to most payers, and eligible to supervise others.

Social worker license, field and clinical hours

Three things belong in that block, and the third is the one that is usually missing.

The license itself. Title, state, number, expiry. The Occupational Outlook Handbook records that all states require clinical social workers to be licensed, that becoming an LCSW requires an MSW from an accredited program, supervised clinical experience after graduation and a clinical exam, and that the length of clinical training varies by state and may take several years (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Social Workers, updated 27 August 2026).

The field placement hours from your degree. The hour count is a real credential at entry level, when you have no salaried practice yet. Write the setting and the number: "912 field placement hours across a hospital medicine unit and a county child protection intake team."

The supervised post-graduate clinical hours. A graduate-level licensee accruing hours is a different hire from an independent clinician, and the gap is a specific number of hours and months. Stating it proves you track your own file, tells the employer what supervision they must fund, and dates the day you become billable at the higher rate.

Licensure and supervised practice

Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW), Minnesota Board of Social Work, #MN-LGSW-31204, issued June 2021, current through 2027.

Supervised practice toward LICSW: 3,240 of 4,000 required practice hours accrued as of September 2026. 164 of the required 200 supervision hours logged, 84 of them one to one, with a board-approved LICSW supervisor at Superior Point Medical Center.

Examinations: ASWB Masters examination passed on first attempt, May 2021. ASWB Clinical examination scheduled March 2027.

Practice specialty: healthcare social work. Secondary: mental health and substance use.

Field placements: 912 hours across a hospital medicine unit and a county child protection intake team, University of Minnesota Duluth MSW program, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Name the ASWB exam and your specialty

Name the exam. The Association of Social Work Boards publishes five categories, Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical, each 122 questions with 110 scored and a four-hour limit (Association of Social Work Boards, September 2026). "Passed the ASWB Clinical examination" is verifiable; "licensed clinical social worker" alone leaves the route to guesswork.

Similarly, state your practice specialty in the same block. Child, family and school; healthcare; mental health and substance abuse; and all other social workers are separate wage lines in the federal data, so a resume that does not say which one you are is one the reader has to classify for you.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Specifically, ten to fourteen entries in three groups: clinical and assessment, systems and documentation, and the regulatory frame you work inside.

Adaptable resume skills example

Clinical and assessment: Biopsychosocial assessment, DSM-5-TR diagnostic formulation, Suicide risk assessment and safety planning, Motivational interviewing, Trauma-informed practice, Cognitive behavioral therapy, Structured decision making

Population and setting: Discharge planning, Crisis intervention, Substance use screening and referral, Child protection assessment, Older adult and caregiver support

Systems and documentation: Epic and Netsmart myAvatar clinical documentation, Treatment planning to payer standard, Medicaid and commercial authorization documentation, Quality and utilization reporting

Regulatory and ethical: NASW Code of Ethics, Mandated reporting, HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, Duty to warn, Board-approved supervision documentation

42 CFR Part 2 governs confidentiality of substance use disorder records and is a different standard from HIPAA, so naming it separately tells a behavioral health employer you have worked under it.

List your education and certifications

License first, then degrees with the accreditation named, then field placements with hours, then certifications and trainings.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Master of Social Work, University of Minnesota Duluth, Duluth, MN, 2021. Program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. 912 field placement hours.

Bachelor of Social Work, The College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, MN, 2016. Program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. 480 field placement hours.

Licenses: LICSW #MN-LICSW-38660, Minnesota Board of Social Work, issued 2024, current through 2028. Previously LGSW #MN-LGSW-31204 and LSW #MN-LSW-24817.

Certifications and training: Board-approved clinical supervisor, Minnesota Board of Social Work (2025). Motivational Interviewing, MINT-endorsed three-day training (2023). Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, ASIST (2024). Structured Decision Making certification, Minnesota Department of Human Services (2017).

Put the accrediting body in writing. A degree from a program the Council on Social Work Education has not accredited does not qualify you for licensure in most states, so leaving it out makes the reader go and check.

Choose the right layout and design

In practice, single column, 11 or 12 point body type, plain headings, no photograph, no skills bar graphics. County human resources portals and hospital applicant systems parse this file into a structured record before a person reads it, and multi-column layouts, text boxes and graphics are exactly where that parsing breaks.

Do

Put the license title, state, number and expiry in the header or the first block. Give supervised hours as a number over the state requirement, with the date you counted. Name the CSWE accreditation of both degrees. State your practice specialty in your own words. Write field placement hours when you are early in your career. Give one number per experience bullet.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "working toward licensure" without the hours. Do not describe an identifiable client, even anonymously, if the details would identify them. Do not list a lapsed license without saying it is inactive. Do not use a two-column template for a county or hospital portal. Do not claim a clinical scope your tier does not carry, since the board register is public and the reader will check it.

Social worker job market and outlook

Statistical insight

Your specialty is worth more than your years

The federal wage data splits social work into four lines, and the spread between them is larger than most people's first decade of raises. As of May 2025, the medians were $59,550 for child, family and school social workers, $60,280 for mental health and substance abuse social workers, $67,880 for healthcare social workers, and $71,900 for social workers, all other (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

The setting moves it again. Hospitals paid a median of $77,440, educational services $68,850, state and local government $65,100, ambulatory healthcare services $63,710, and individual and family services $51,980 (BLS, May 2025).

That is a gap of more than $25,000 between the hospital line and the individual and family services line, in the same occupation, often with the same license. If you are writing a resume for a move, the specialty sentence and the setting sentence in your summary are doing more financial work than any bullet below them.

Where the jobs sit:

SettingShare of employmentMedian annual wage (May 2025)
State and local government, excluding education and hospitals27 percent$65,100
Individual and family services17 percent$51,980
Ambulatory healthcare services15 percent$63,710
Hospitals, state, local and private10 percent$77,440
Educational services, state, local and private10 percent$68,850

What salary you can expect as a social worker

To begin with, the median annual wage for social workers was $61,780 as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $42,790 and the highest 10 percent more than $100,090 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

However, almost all of that range comes from three things you can put on a resume: license tier, specialty and setting. Independent clinical licensure is the largest single step, because it makes your signature billable and lets an employer count you against a payer contract rather than an administrative budget.

Instead, what a resume moves is the timing. That is because agencies budget supervision, licensure reimbursement, specialty differentials and supervisory stipends against documentation. For example, a file stating the hours accrued, the exam date and the supervisor's credential opens those conversations at offer stage. Meanwhile, a file saying "pursuing licensure" opens them a year later, at review.

Key takeaways for a social worker resume

  1. First, lead with the license tier, the state and the number; it is the gate, not an achievement.
  2. Then write supervised clinical hours as a fraction over your state's requirement, with the date you counted.
  3. Next, name the ASWB examination category you passed, and the date of the one you have scheduled.
  4. State your practice specialty, because it is a separate federal wage line and a separate hiring pool.
  5. Give field placement hours and settings while you are early; they are real practice evidence.
  6. Finally, say that both degrees came from CSWE-accredited programs.
  7. Keep it single column and parseable, since county and hospital portals read it before a person does.

Social worker resume questions, answered

How long should a social worker resume be?

One page at the bachelor's and graduate license stage. Two pages once you are independently licensed, supervising other clinicians, or carrying program or contract responsibility. Never three. The licensure block earns its space on either length, so cut experience bullets before you cut it.

What do I write if I am not licensed yet?

Write the pipeline. The degree and its CSWE accreditation, the field placement settings and hours, the examination you have registered for and its date, and the application you have filed with the board. "MSW conferred May 2026, CSWE accredited, 900 field placement hours, ASWB Masters examination scheduled July 2026, LGSW application filed with the Minnesota Board of Social Work" is a hireable paragraph. "Recent MSW graduate seeking opportunities" is not.

Should I put my license number on my resume?

Yes, with the state and the expiry date. Licensure is public information on a searchable board register, so the number reveals nothing a search of your name would not, and it shortens credentialing. Redact it only when posting to a public job board, and even then keep the title, state and expiry.

How do I show clinical work without breaching confidentiality?

Describe the work, the population and the volume, never the person. "Completed 94 safety assessments for a county child protection unit in 12 months" is safe. Any detail that could identify a client, including an unusual diagnosis paired with a small setting, does not belong on a resume and will be read as a judgment problem rather than an achievement.

Is a bachelor's degree enough to work as a social worker?

For many jobs, yes. The federal handbook lists a bachelor's or master's degree in social work as the typical entry-level education for the occupation, while clinical roles require the master's and a clinical license (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Social Workers, updated 27 August 2026). Bachelor's-level licensure supports case-carrying generalist practice in county agencies, schools and community organizations; it does not support independent diagnosis or therapy.

Does the state I am licensed in matter on the resume?

It matters, because a license does not travel automatically. Name the issuing state, note any second license you hold, and if an application is pending by endorsement in the state you are applying to, say so with the filing date. A border-region employer will wait for a candidate already in the queue and will not wait for one who has not started.
