Most school nurse resumes read as hospital resumes with the unit name changed, but it is not the same job. After all, a school nurse is usually the only licensed clinician in the building, and the nearest prescriber is a signature on a standing order. As a result, a director of health services is reading for one question: can this person practice alone?

How to write a school nurse resume

Six blocks: contact header with both credentials, summary, caseload, experience with numbers, education and certification, and systems. In general, use one page for your first five years in schools, then two once you carry a district portfolio. First, put the caseload directly under the summary: it is the closest thing school nursing has to a unit and a bed count, and without it nobody can size your job.

Choosing the best resume format for a school nurse resume

Reverse chronological. District, school, grade band, student count, dates, then bullets that each carry a number. Two pages only once you supervise other nurses, and keep the clinical career you had before schools short.

Then put the grade band in the assignment line. For example, an elementary nurse spends the year on asthma, food allergy, diabetes and seizure plans. Meanwhile, a high school nurse spends it on mental health referrals, concussion return-to-learn and chronic absence. Those are different hires.

Include your contact information

Also, put both credentials next to your name with numbers. That matters because human resources verifies the RN license with the board of nursing and the school certificate with the state education agency: two separate checks.

In short, use four lines: your two credentials, the caseload, the planning work you own, and one measured result.

Your caseload as a table: buildings, students, delegation and the health plans you wrote

In fact, this is the block that makes a school nurse resume readable, and almost nobody writes it. In other words, everything a district needs to size you sits in four numbers and one rule.

Buildings and students first. There is no national staffing rule to appeal to. The National Association of School Nurses moved away from ratios, stating that "though no known evidence supports the sole use of a simple ratio for workload determination in school nursing, these ratio recommendations persist," and recommending an annual workload analysis instead (NASN, School Nurse Workload position statement, revised June 2025). A ratio alone impresses nobody, and without the count nobody can interpret your job.

Then the plans you wrote, as counts. Individualized healthcare plans, emergency care plans, health components of 504 plans under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and IEP health services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. These are what a district gets audited on, and counting them is the clearest evidence that you plan care rather than only respond to it. Break out the conditions driving the work.

Delegation rules for school nurses, by state

Then delegation, with your state named. This is the boundary that defines school nursing, and it differs sharply by state, which is why a vague line about training staff says nothing. The national frame is the joint guidance from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the American Nurses Association, effective 29 April 2019: "the licensed nurse who delegates the responsibility maintains overall accountability for the patient," and nursing judgment can never be delegated. What that becomes in state rule varies:

• Rhode Island is restrictive. "A school nurse must administer medication(s) to student(s) within the public school setting," and "no lay person, other than a parent, may administer medication to a student in the school setting," with narrow exceptions for epinephrine and glucagon (Rhode Island Code of Regulations 216-RICR-20-10-4.24).
• Colorado is broader but tightly conditioned. Under state nursing rules at 3 CCR 716-1 and the Nurse and Nurse Aide Practice Act at C.R.S. 12-255-131, a delegated task must be routine and repetitive and must not require nursing judgment, the nurse documents competence with signatures, and the delegation lasts one school year. However, stock epinephrine and naloxone given by designated personnel is "not a delegated nursing function" (Colorado Department of Education).

Therefore, write the version your state gives you, cite the rule, and say how you documented it. A nurse leader in Providence and one in Denver are reading for different answers, and both can tell in a line whether you have read your own practice act.

Standing orders for solo practice

Then standing orders, because solo practice runs on them. Rhode Island law states that "school physicians may execute standing orders and prescriptions for school nurses to use epinephrine when there are symptoms of anaphylaxis" (Rhode Island General Laws section 16-21-22). Name your standing orders, who signs them, and the stock supply you inventory.

List your education, license and certifications

License first, then the state school certificate, then degrees, then national certification. The school certificate is what most files leave out, and in many states it is why a resume is rejected before anyone reads it.

Rhode Island, for instance, is a clear case because the requirement is in statute: "each school system shall employ certified nurse-teacher personnel certified by the state department of elementary and secondary education" (Rhode Island General Laws section 16-21-8). The certificate has requirements of its own, separate from the RN license, including three years of documented experience as a professional nurse (Rhode Island Department of Education, Preliminary School Nurse Teacher requirements, checked September 2026).

National certification is separate again. Also, the Nationally Certified School Nurse credential requires an RN license, a bachelor's degree or higher in nursing, and at least 1,000 hours of school nursing practice within the three years before the examination (National Board for Certification of School Nurses, checked September 2026).

Finally, keep a single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no skill rating bars. District portals read the file into a structured record before a person opens it, and two columns and graphics are where that breaks.

However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no separate profile for school nurses. Instead, the published occupation is registered nurses, and school nursing sits inside its educational services line, the smallest and lowest-paid of the five industry groups the Handbook reports.

What shapes the school nurse market

Two things shape this market more than the national numbers. Posts are tied to a school calendar, so hiring happens in a short window in late spring and summer. Similarly, the certificate is a real gate: in a state that requires a distinct school nurse credential, a hospital nurse without one cannot be assigned to a building.

Immunization work is also growing. Coverage among kindergartners fell for every vaccine the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracks in the 2025 to 2026 school year, with measles, mumps and rubella coverage at 92.4 percent and diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis at 92.0 percent, while the share exempt from one or more vaccines rose from 3.6 percent to 4.2 percent (CDC SchoolVaxView, last reviewed 17 August 2026). In the same way, a compliance rate you moved earns its own bullet.

What salary you can expect as a school nurse

In fact, there is no published school nurse wage. The relevant figure is registered nurses in educational services, where the median annual wage was $78,620 as of May 2025 against $97,550 for registered nurses overall and $100,220 in hospitals (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Overall, that gap of roughly 22 percent is the biggest financial fact about the job.

Still, what you get in exchange is a school calendar and, in most districts, a place on a salary schedule with a defined step and lane. In practice, placement is awarded against documentation: credited nursing experience, degree level and national certification.

So write the resume to be placed, not only to be liked. State the degree and the year, and state national certification with the issuing board and the year, because it carries a stipend in many districts and cannot be counted if it is not on the page. State the full span of your prior nursing experience, including the hospital years, since credited experience usually includes clinical nursing outside schools. The step up from a building post is district level: coordinator or director of health services, hired on planning evidence rather than clinical volume.
