Summary
A camp counselor resume is a one page document naming the age group you can supervise, the ratio you worked at, and the certifications a camp is legally and practically required to have on site. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, what counts as experience when you have never had a paid job, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for the occupation.
Camp Counselor resume examples by experience level
A camp counselor resume is a one page document naming the age group you can supervise, the ratio you worked at, and the certifications you hold. A director hiring dozens of people in a few weeks reads it fast, and reads it for one question first: is this a safe adult to put in front of children.
Most people writing this resume are 16 to 22 and have never had a full-time job. That is normal here, as long as the page is written for what camps screen on.
Resume guide for a camp counselor resume
This guide and the camp counselor resume example below will cover:
- How to write the resume, section by section
- What counts as experience when you have never had a paid job
- Three adaptable summaries: first summer, returning counselor, unit leader
- The certifications that move you into jobs that pay more
- What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn
How to write a camp counselor resume
Five blocks: contact header, summary, certifications, experience, and skills with availability. One page, always.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | Can I staff my waterfront and first aid cover with this person? | Directly under the summary |
| Age group and ratio | Which cabin or unit can I put them in? | In the summary and every experience entry |
| Experience | Have they been responsible for children before? | Reverse chronological, paid and unpaid together |
| Availability | Can they work the whole season? | One line at the bottom, with exact dates |
Availability earns that line. The biggest hiring challenge is finding qualified candidates able to work the full summer, named by 60 percent of camp staffing agencies in a 2024 National Recreation and Park Association report cited by the American Camp Association (Camping Magazine, 1 January 2026). "Available 8 June to 16 August, including staff training week" answers the question behind most rejections.
Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you submit. Large camp organizations and parks departments parse applications into a system first.
Choosing the best resume format for a camp counselor resume
Reverse chronological, one page, with certifications lifted above experience. Put paid and unpaid work in one list, ordered by date, with hours or duration next to each. Skip the functional format: a director is looking for a pattern of responsibility over time, and adjectives with no dates read as a gap being hidden. If your list is short, make each entry concrete.

Make use of a summary
Three or four lines: age group, ratio, certifications, and one thing you actually did.
High school graduate seeking a first counselor role with ages 6 to 10. Three summers as a volunteer junior counselor at a church day camp, supporting a group of 14 children alongside two adult staff, plus two years of after-school care for three younger children. Hold American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid, with Lifeguarding completing in May. Available for the full season including staff training week.
Returning resident camp counselor with three summers at an ACA-accredited camp, most recently as waterfront counselor for ages 9 to 14 at an eight to one ratio. Hold American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, plus 16-hour Wilderness First Aid. Ran daily swim assessments for 120 campers a session and taught beginner canoeing to four groups a week, with no reportable incidents in three seasons.
Unit leader with seven summers at ACA-accredited resident camps, supervising 12 counselors and a unit of 96 campers aged 9 to 14. Hold Water Safety Instructor, Wilderness First Responder and Level 1 Challenge Course Practitioner certification. Rewrote the unit's behavior support plan and cut mid-session camper departures from 9 to 2 over two seasons, and lead three days of pre-season staff training on supervision and child protection.
Right vs wrong: the same camp counselor summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Waterfront counselor for ages 9 to 14 at an eight to one ratio. | Enthusiastic team player who loves working with kids. |
| American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, plus 16-hour Wilderness First Aid. | CPR certified and very responsible. |
| Ran daily swim assessments for 120 campers a session. | Helped with swimming and other water activities. |
| Available 8 June to 16 August, including staff training week. | Available most of the summer. |
The right column tells a director which cabin you can take and which certification box you fill.
Outline your camp and childcare experience
Organization, role, dates, age group, group size and ratio. Then two or three bullets. Volunteer and unpaid work go in the same list, because for this job they count the same.
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|

| Planned fun activities | Ran a daily two-hour activity block for 24 campers: archery, low ropes and nature hikes |
| Helped at the waterfront | Ran swim assessments for 120 campers each session and taught four beginner canoe groups a week |
| Babysat | Regular after-school care for three children aged 4, 7 and 9, roughly 12 hours a week for two years |
Waterfront Counselor, Camp Ellenwood (ACA-accredited resident camp), Brevard, NC, June to August 2024 and 2025

Ran daily swim assessments for roughly 120 campers per session and taught beginner canoeing to four groups a week.
Completed and logged daily waterfront equipment checks, and served on the emergency response rotation for two seasons with no reportable incidents.
Mentored two first-year counselors during pre-season staff week on supervision expectations and behavior support steps.
What counts as experience when you have never had a paid job
Almost everyone applying for a first counselor role has this problem, and most solve it badly by leaving the page half empty. The experience camps want is responsibility for other people's children, in any form, with a duration and group size attached. You very likely have some. Write it as a job entry with dates, not a line in a hobbies list.
| What you might call it | How it goes on the resume |
|---|---|
| Babysitting | Regular after-school care for three children aged 4, 7 and 9, roughly 12 hours a week, September 2024 to present |
| Church or community volunteering | Volunteer junior leader, Sunday children's program, ages 5 to 8, group of 16, weekly for three years |
| Coaching or refereeing | Assistant coach, under-10 recreational soccer, squad of 14, two practices and a match a week, two seasons |
| School leadership | Marching band section leader, 11 students, running sectional rehearsals and travel check-ins |
| Tutoring or peer mentoring | Peer tutor, 6 students in Grade 6 mathematics, twice weekly for a school year |
Three rules make these entries work. Give the number of children and their ages, because that is the unit a camp thinks in. Give the duration, because six months of Saturdays beats one impressive week. And name the adult structure you worked inside: "alongside two adult staff" tells a director you know you were never the only adult.
What never belongs on the page is any detail identifying a child: no names, no initials, no photographs, no description of a child's behavior, diagnosis, family or incident, even to show how well you handled it. Write the group and the work instead. A resume that discloses a child's business answers the safeguarding question badly.
Write the safeguarding language camps actually use
ACA accreditation covers 130 or more standards across six categories, including Staff and Supervision, with mandatory standards for new staff screening, subsequent criminal background check screening and annual screening of all staff (American Camp Association, standards effective November 2025).
Every camp will therefore run a criminal background check and a sex offender registry check, and will want references who have seen you around children. Saying so yourself costs one line: "Background and reference checks welcomed."
Then show you know how supervision works. Camps use terms like two-deep leadership, the rule of three, and no one-on-one contact out of sight of other staff. If you have been trained in those, name the training, and name any mandated reporter training with its year.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Eight to twelve entries in three groups: supervision and safety, activity instruction, practical camp skills. Activity skills get you scheduled, so be specific about what you can teach.
Supervision and safety: Age-appropriate supervision and ratio management, Behavior support and de-escalation, Homesickness protocols, Emergency action plans, Incident reporting, Mandated reporter trained
Activity instruction: Beginner and intermediate swimming, Canoeing and kayaking, Low ropes facilitation, Target archery, Campfire programming
Practical: Cabin routines and bedtime, Camp hygiene standards, Radio communication, Trip packing and route planning
Availability: Full season 8 June to 16 August 2026, including staff training week. Own transport. Comfortable with overnight and off-site trips.
List your education and certifications
Certifications first with the awarding body and expiry, then education. That is the reverse of most resumes and it is correct here: certifications are what let a camp schedule you, and several expire.
American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, valid to May 2027
Wilderness First Aid, 16-hour course, valid to April 2028
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, valid to May 2027
Level 1 Challenge Course Practitioner, Association for Challenge Course Technology, 2025
Mandated reporter training, North Carolina, 2025
Bachelor of Arts, Psychology, University of North Carolina at Asheville, expected 2028
Red Cross Lifeguarding is valid for two years, includes CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, and requires a prerequisite swim assessment and a written exam (American Red Cross, 2026). Put the expiry on the page: a director scheduling a waterfront in May needs to know whether your card covers the season.
Three certifications, three different jobs
Recreation workers, the Bureau of Labor Statistics category that includes camp counselors, had a median wage of $17.58 an hour and $36,560 a year as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $27,600 and the highest over $50,410 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Almost nobody earns the annual figure at camp, because the work is seasonal and much of the pay is a weekly stipend with room and board. What the spread shows is that one occupation contains very different jobs, and at camp the certification moves you between them.
Lifeguarding opens waterfront and pool posts, which usually carry a higher stipend. Wilderness First Aid opens trip leadership. A certification from the Association for Challenge Course Technology opens high ropes, one of the few activities a camp cannot run without a certified facilitator.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, one page, no photograph. Many camps still print applications for a hiring committee, and a design-heavy template photocopies and parses badly. Put the certifications block in the top third of the page, where a director checking waterfront cover will find it.
Give the age group, group size and ratio for every entry. List volunteer and unpaid childcare as real experience, with dates. Put certifications and expiry dates near the top. State exact availability including staff training week. Say you welcome background and reference checks. Name any mandated reporter training with its year.
Do not name, initial, photograph or describe any individual child, even in a positive story. Do not claim a certification you have only booked. Do not write "available most of the summer" when camps staff whole sessions. Do not use a novelty email address. Do not list a lifeguard card expiring mid-season without saying when you will renew.
Camp counselor job market and outlook
A seasonal market inside a steadily growing occupation, with hiring compressed into a few months.

Where the jobs sit:
| Setting | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Local government, excluding education and hospitals | 32% | $36,540 |
| Nursing and residential care facilities | 19% | $37,500 |
| Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional and similar organizations | 10% | $36,510 |

| Educational services, state, local and private | 9% | $36,230 |

Local government is municipal parks and recreation, which runs most day camps. The civic and religious row is where YMCAs, scouting organizations, church camps and most nonprofit resident camps sit. Apply to both.
Over a third of camp staffing agencies begin the serious search for summer staff in April and May (ACA, Camping Magazine, 1 January 2026), but many resident camps run a first round from December through February. Apply in January to the camp you want and in April to the rest.
What salary you can expect as a camp counselor
The occupation median is $17.58 an hour, or $36,560 a year, as of May 2025 (BLS). Camp pay is usually a flat weekly or seasonal stipend, with meals and often accommodation included at resident camps, which is why hourly comparisons mislead.
Three things raise the figure. Certification is the largest lever, because lifeguard, challenge course, riding and trip-leading posts often cannot be filled by anyone else. Returning for a second or third season is next, since camps pay to keep people who know the routines.
Ask what the stipend covers before you accept: days off, travel, staff training week, and whether required certification courses are reimbursed. A camp that pays for your Wilderness First Aid hands you a credential worth more than the weekly pay difference.

Camp counselor resume questions, answered
How long should a camp counselor resume be?
One page. Directors read these in large batches over a few weeks, and a second page reduces the chance the certifications block is seen at all.
What do I put on a camp counselor resume with no experience?
Responsibility for children in any form, with dates, ages and group size: babysitting, sibling care, church or community youth programs, coaching, scouting, peer tutoring, a school leadership role. Add any certification you hold or have booked, and your exact availability. That is a complete first-summer resume.
Which certifications are worth getting before I apply?
Start with American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid, which almost every camp expects. Lifeguarding is the biggest single step up, because waterfront posts are hardest to staff and usually pay more; it is valid for two years and includes CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid (American Red Cross, 2026). Then 16-hour Wilderness First Aid for trips, and an ACCT certification for high ropes.
Should I say anything about background checks on my resume?
Yes, one line. Accredited camps operate under mandatory standards for new staff screening, subsequent criminal background checks and annual screening of all staff (American Camp Association, standards effective November 2025), so the check happens either way. Saying you welcome it, and offering references who have seen you work with children, is a signal in your favor.
Can I mention a camper I helped, without using their name?
It is safer not to describe an individual at all. Write the group and the protocol instead: "used the camp's homesickness protocol with 11 campers over two seasons" says the same thing about your judgment without disclosing anything about a child.
