A Walmart cover letter is a one page letter that tells a very large hourly employer which role family you are applying to, which shifts you can cover, and what changed on a shift you actually worked.

Walmart's published careers material states that "a resume or CV is not required to apply" and that "you cannot change your application after submitting" (careers.walmart.com, accessed September 2026). A letter is not the center of that process. It is the one field where you can say something the structured form never asks for, which makes it worth two hundred and fifty words.

I am applying for the Overnight Stocking and Fulfillment Associate role at the Rogers store, requisition R-48120. I can work Sunday to Thursday, 10pm to 7am, and I am available for freight days, inventory weekends and the November to January intake. I am evaluated on both sit-down counterbalance and stand-up reach trucks.
I have spent four years on the overnight side of a supercentre in Bentonville. The part I would most want to bring to Rogers is what happened to our replenishment set: we were finishing 79% of a 14 aisle set most nights, and after resequencing the aisle plan and moving freight breakdown ahead of the pick window, we finished 96% across a full trading year. Over the same period I cut digital order substitutions on my zone from 11% to 4% by rebuilding the pick path, which is the change customers notice first.
I am applying to Rogers because it runs a larger digital fulfillment volume than my current store and I want to work that side properly rather than as weekend cover. I can also take front end shifts at weekend peaks, where I run 40 to 60 transactions an hour and close a till with no variance, so I am useful on a night the rota breaks.

Open with the role family, not with enthusiasm

Every line in the right column is checkable or schedulable. That is the only test worth applying to a sentence in this letter.

The middle paragraph: one number from a real shift

Hourly retail and supply chain work produces numbers constantly, and almost nobody writes them down.

Pick one. A letter with a single before-and-after figure and a time frame reads as evidence. A letter with five reads as a retyped resume.

Writing a letter that also works for an internal transfer

Plan for this, because at this scale most of your applications will eventually be internal ones. Walmart's corporate careers material states that "75% of our U.S. store management team started as hourly associates" (corporate.walmart.com, accessed September 2026). Whatever the equivalent figure is where you join, the structure holds: the ladder runs upward through the building rather than in through the front door, and your second letter goes to a manager two departments away.

So write in units that travel: completion rates, accuracy rates, volume per hour, people trained and signed off. A till variance and an item fill rate are both accuracy claims, and either reader recognizes the other. Keep dates on everything, because an internal move is decided on documentation rather than on who remembers you.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal names a format, named for yourself and the role: tyrese-vandermeer-overnight-fulfillment-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person where the posting names one and the site where it does not: "Dear Rogers store hiring team" beats "To whom it may concern". Quote the requisition number, because at this volume that is how your letter reaches the right file.
