Most quick service applications do not ask for a letter. Send one anyway when there is a field for it, because it is the only place you can say what you are for.

Dear Mr. Villanueva,
I am applying for the shift leader position at your Serramonte restaurant. I can run front counter, drive-through window, assembly and fry unsupervised, I open from 6am and I close, and I hold a current California Food Handler Card and a ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification.
I have spent five years in high-volume quick service, the last two as a shift leader running a nine-person crew. The result I am most pleased with is a slow one: over two quarters I rebalanced how we staffed assembly at peak, and average drive-through service time fell from 3 minutes 48 seconds to 2 minutes 55 seconds. Order accuracy went up rather than down over the same period, from 93% to 97%, which was not what anyone expected when we started moving people around.
My first three years were at a mall food outlet in Quezon City, Philippines, where I ran front counter through a lunch peak of roughly 300 covers in two hours and closed the restaurant alone four nights a week. I take orders in English, Tagalog and Ilocano, which I understand matters in Daly City.
I own the opening and closing checklists, temperature logs and nightly cash count in my current restaurant, and I have trained fourteen crew members across three stations. I can start with two weeks' notice. Thank you for your time.

Openings that work

What counts as evidence in quick service

Everything in a restaurant is already counted, so use the counts. Only quote a figure you can explain, because speed of service is measured differently from chain to chain and you will be asked what the clock started and stopped on.

Writing about a job you did in another country

The foreign born accounted for 19.1 percent of the US civilian labor force in 2025, at a labor force participation rate of 66.3 percent (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Labor Force Characteristics of Foreign-Born Workers, released 19 May 2026). Quick service chains are themselves international: one publishes 103 stores in North America and more than 1,700 globally (Jollibee USA site, jollibeefoods.com, accessed September 2026). A manager reading your letter has almost certainly hired someone whose last job was in another country.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 350 words. PDF unless the application says otherwise, named for yourself and the position: maricel-bautista-shift-leader-cover-letter.pdf.

Address the restaurant manager by name if the location publishes one, and the restaurant itself if not. "Dear Hiring Manager, Serramonte restaurant" is specific enough to read as written for that building.
