Open with the job area and the hours, in that order
A store hiring leader is not reading for personality. They are reading against a schedule with holes in it: a 5am unload team short two people, weekend drive up cover, and a reset week nobody wants.
Open with the two facts that answer the schedule. Name the job area in the retailer's own published wording, then say when you can work. Target publishes its store hourly job areas openly, including Specialty Sales, Service and Engagement, General Merchandise and Food Sales, and support roles such as Closing Team Member (Target careers site, corporate.target.com, accessed September 2026).

The fulfillment half of the store is where the growth is
Retail sales worker employment is projected to change by 0% between 2025 and 2035, a decline of 5,700 jobs from a base of 4,271,400, with a median annual wage of $35,560 as of May 2025. Over the same decade, stockers and order fillers are projected to grow 9%, an increase of 250,700 jobs, at a median of $37,330 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wages).
One large general merchandise retailer states in its annual report that "our stores fulfill the majority of digitally originated sales" (Target Corporation, Form 10-K, fiscal year ended 31 January 2026). That is why a letter aimed at the fulfillment and inbound side lands harder than a general one: it is the part of the store that is still adding work.
Say which half of the building you are for. Almost nobody does, and it is the fastest way to be sorted into the right pile.
Writing the letter with no retail experience
Translate what you have done into volume, speed and accuracy, because that is the same skill. Warehouse picking, kitchen ticket work, parcel delivery, landscaping, care work and cleaning rounds all carry a count and a clock. Say how many, how fast and how often you got it wrong. Name the job area and the hours you can cover, since both are read before experience. Mention any certification you hold, including a food handler card or an equipment evaluation.
Do not apologize for having no retail experience; the typical entry-level education for retail sales workers is no formal educational credential (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025) and these employers hire from outside the sector constantly. Do not say you are flexible when you are not. Do not invent a number you cannot explain. Do not send the same letter to six job areas. Do not write more than one page.
Length, format and sending it

Do I need a cover letter for a big-box retail application?
Usually not, and that is the argument for sending one. The application form collects the same structured fields from everybody. A short letter is the only place you can name the job area, state your real hours and give one number, which is exactly the information a store hiring leader is missing.
How long should a Target cover letter be?
One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 350 words. These are read in batches alongside dozens of others, so length reads as noise rather than effort.
What if I am applying for a seasonal role?
Say so, and say you will take whichever intake opens first. Seasonal hiring runs in volume, and the people who convert to permanent roles are usually the ones available for the hours nobody else wanted. Name those hours in the opening paragraph.
