Summary
A Target resume is a one page application for a big-box general merchandise store, written around the job area you are applying to and the fulfillment work that now runs through the building: order pickup, drive up and ship from store. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the published job areas these retailers hire into, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for retail and stocking work.
Target resume examples by experience level
A Target resume is a one page retail application for a big-box general merchandise store, written around the job area you are applying to and the part of the work that has actually changed in the last decade: picking, packing and handing over online orders from the same building customers walk through.
This guide is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Target Corporation or any other retailer, and it contains no inside knowledge of any company's hiring, pay or interview process. It uses what one large general merchandise retailer publishes openly about its own store roles, alongside federal wage data, as a single worked example. All of it transfers to any big-box general merchandise employer.
Start with the building, because it is no longer just a shop. It is a shop and a small distribution center sharing one roof, one inventory and one set of staff.

How to write a Target resume
Six sections: contact header, summary, availability, work experience, skills and certifications, and education. One page until you are applying for a leadership role.
Availability sits high because it is a filter rather than a feature. Pickup and drive up peak in the late afternoon and at weekends, resets happen overnight, and truck unload starts before the store opens. A candidate who covers those windows is scheduled ahead of a stronger one who cannot.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Job area and summary | Which part of the store is this person for? | Top, under the name |
| Availability | Can they cover the hours we cannot fill? | Under the summary |
| Work experience | Have they handled volume, and did they stay? | Reverse chronological, with numbers |
| Skills and certifications | Can they be rostered on week one? | Near the bottom |
Apply to one named job area, not to the store
Big-box retailers hire into a named function, and the form makes you choose one before you upload anything.
Target publishes its store hourly job areas openly: Specialty Sales, Service and Engagement, General Merchandise and Food Sales, and support roles. Named hourly roles inside them include Style Consultant, Guest Advocate, Front of Store Attendant, Inbound Expert, Fulfillment Expert, General Merchandise Expert, Closing Team Member and Security Specialist (Target Corporation careers site, corporate.target.com, accessed September 2026).
Pick one and write the page to it. "Retail Team Member, Fulfillment and Inbound" answers the form. "Hardworking team player seeking any available position" asks the recruiter to do your sorting.
Run the file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker first; these applications are parsed into a structured record before a person opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for a Target resume
Reverse chronological, one page, single column, no photograph.
A functional format works against you here. The reader is checking two things only a timeline answers: whether you have worked a genuinely busy floor, and whether you stayed. A format that hides dates reads as one hiding short tenures.

Four lines. City and state only, no street address. The second line is the job area you are applying to, in the retailer's own published wording.
Make use of a summary
Three to four lines: the job area, how long you have done this work, one number that shows volume or accuracy, and your hours.
Retail team member applying to fulfillment and inbound, with fourteen months of evening and weekend work in a grocery stockroom and a full holiday season on a general merchandise sales floor. Picked and staged 60 to 90 online orders a shift through the two peak weeks, with no customer pick complaints logged against my batches. Available weekday afternoons, full weekends and overnight reset shifts.
General merchandise team member with four years in big-box retail, split between fulfillment and backroom inbound. Run 110 to 140 picks an hour on a handheld scanner at 99.4% pick accuracy across a trading year, and rebuilt the backroom location file for two departments, taking on-hand inventory accuracy from 91% to 98% over three cycle counts. Cross-trained on register, guest service desk and drive up.
Fulfillment team lead running a 16-person operation across order pickup, drive up and ship from store in a 130,000 square foot general merchandise store. Took on-time order readiness from 88% to 97% across a trading year while holding pick accuracy above 99% through a peak that doubled daily order volume. Own the seasonal reset plan for four departments and the powered equipment inspection log, and have promoted five team members.
Right vs wrong: the same Target resume summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| General merchandise team member with four years in big-box retail, split between fulfillment and backroom inbound. | Enthusiastic retail professional with excellent customer service skills and a strong work ethic. |
| Run 110 to 140 picks an hour at 99.4% pick accuracy across a trading year. | Responsible for picking online orders and keeping shelves stocked. |
| Took on-hand inventory accuracy from 91% to 98% over three cycle counts. | Helped maintain accurate stock levels in the store. |
The right column can be verified or scheduled. The wrong column has been submitted by four hundred other applicants for the same requisition, in nearly the same words.
Outline your experience
Employer, store format, city, dates, then three to five bullets. Every bullet carries a number, because in volume retail the number is the claim.

Fulfillment and Inbound Team Member, Big-Box General Merchandise Store, Minneapolis, MN, February 2022 to Present
Pick, pack and stage 60 to 90 digital orders a shift across order pickup, drive up and ship from store, holding 99.4% pick accuracy across a full trading year.
Work the 5am unload on truck days, sorting and staging 1,100 to 1,400 cartons per trailer across four deliveries a week.
Rebuilt the backroom location file for home and seasonal after a cycle count, moving on-hand accuracy from 91% to 98% across three counts.
Cross-trained on register, guest service desk and drive up handover through two holiday peaks, and trained nine seasonal team members on the handheld pick flow across two intakes.
Write the fulfillment side of the store: order types, pick rate and pick accuracy
This is the section that separates a big-box general merchandise resume from every other retail resume, and most applicants leave it out.
Stores are now the fulfillment network. Target's annual report states that "our stores fulfill the majority of digitally originated sales, which allows improved product availability, faster fulfillment times, reduced shipping costs" (Target Corporation, Form 10-K, fiscal year ended 31 January 2026); the same company employed about 415,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal team members as of that date. Its careers site describes a team that "picks, preps, packs, sorts, and ships products safely, efficiently and effectively", selecting items for "order pickup, drive up and ship to home for digital guest orders" and delivering "quality and accuracy with each order while meeting timeliness goals" (Target Corporation careers site, corporate.target.com, accessed September 2026).
Three order types, three different jobs:
| Order type | What the work is | What to put on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Order pickup | Pick from floor and backroom, stage on hold racking, hand over at a counter | Orders picked a shift, pick accuracy, on-time readiness |
| Drive up | The same pick, carried to a vehicle inside a short window from arrival | Handovers a shift, average wait, peak cover, returns taken at the car |
| Ship from store | Pick, then pack to a carrier standard with correct materials and label | Parcels packed a shift, rework rate, carrier cut-off met |
Then the numbers that decide whether any of it works:
Pick rate: 110 to 140 units an hour on handheld, sustained across a trading year
Pick accuracy: 99.4% across roughly 21,000 units picked, measured on customer-reported substitutions and misses
Order readiness: 97% of pickup orders ready inside the promised window through the holiday peak
Inventory accuracy: two departments moved from 91% to 98% on-hand accuracy across three cycle counts
Backroom: 6 aisles of location-controlled racking, with a weekly capacity and aged-hold audit
Do not invent these numbers. If your employer does not publish them to you, use what you can defend: orders a shift, cartons a truck, aisles reset, returns processed, register variance, or a before and after from a count you worked on. The first interview question will be how you got the figure.
Inventory accuracy is the quiet one. A pick failure is visible to the customer within minutes rather than at the next count, because someone is sitting in a parking space waiting for an item the system says exists. That is why backroom location discipline and cycle counting now read as fulfillment skills rather than housekeeping.
Finally, write availability as a block rather than the word "flexible".
Availability: Monday to Friday from 2pm, Saturday and Sunday open to close
Also available for: 5am truck unload, overnight seasonal resets, inventory nights, holiday extended hours
Not available: Wednesday mornings until 1pm through June 2027, due to a fixed class
Notice period: two weeks
Be honest in the "not available" line. A claim you cannot keep surfaces in week two, and it is the fastest way to lose the hours you wanted.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Ten to fourteen entries in three groups: operations, systems and equipment, and compliance.
Operations: Digital order picking and packing, Order pickup and drive up handover, Ship from store and carrier cut-off, Backroom location control, Cycle counting, Seasonal resets and planogram execution, Returns
Systems and equipment: Handheld RF scanner and pick flow, Point of sale and returns, Electric pallet jack, Powered industrial truck, Label and manifest printing
Compliance and safety: Powered equipment pre-use inspection, Manual handling and team lift, Age-restricted sales checks, Environmentally sensitive item handling, Loss prevention awareness
Languages: English (native), Spanish (conversational)
"Team player" occupies the space where a certification should be. If you have neither yet, name a system you have actually operated.
List your education and certifications
Certifications first; they decide what you can be rostered on in week one. Education after, briefly.
Powered Industrial Truck Operator, sit-down counterbalance and electric pallet jack, employer-certified under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), most recent evaluation 2025
Food Handler Card, Minnesota Department of Health approved provider, 2026
CPR and First Aid, American Red Cross, 2026
Associate of Applied Science, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Minneapolis College, Minneapolis, MN, 2024
Write a forklift ticket the way the regulation works. Under OSHA's powered industrial truck standard the employer certifies that each operator has been trained and evaluated, and each operator's performance is evaluated at least once every three years (OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.178(l)). List the equipment types you were evaluated on and the year, not a license you carry between employers. Target's published role description notes powered equipment is operated "if certified", which is the same point from the employer's side (Target Corporation careers site, corporate.target.com, accessed September 2026).
Do not talk yourself out of applying on education. The typical entry-level education for retail sales workers is no formal educational credential (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Choose the right layout and design
One page, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no icons, no skill bars.
These roles are filled through structured online applications, and the file is parsed into fields before a human reads it. Two-column templates, text boxes and graphics are where that parsing breaks, which turns a good application into an empty record.
Name one job area in your title line, in the retailer's published wording. Put availability under the summary as days and times. Give every experience bullet a number. Separate pick rate from pick accuracy. List equipment tickets with the type and your most recent evaluation year. Say plainly whether you will take 5am unload, overnight resets and the holiday intake.
Do not write "flexible" when you are not. Do not apply to six job areas with one generic file. Do not invent a pick accuracy figure you cannot explain. Do not hide short tenures behind a functional layout. Do not claim equipment you have not been evaluated on. Do not add a photograph or a skills chart to a parsed application.
Big-box general merchandise job market and outlook
A very large, flat sales occupation sitting alongside a stocking occupation that is growing.
| Measure | Retail sales workers |
|---|---|
| Employment, 2025 | 4,271,400 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0% (little or no change), -5,700 |
| Projected annual openings | About 550,600 |
| Typical entry-level education | No formal educational credential |
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $35,560 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025-35 projections.
The sales floor is flat and the stockroom is growing
Retail sales worker employment is projected to change by 0% between 2025 and 2035, a decline of 5,700 jobs. Over the same decade, stockers and order fillers are projected to grow 9%, an increase of 250,700 jobs from a 2025 base of 2,804,300, with a median annual wage of $37,330 as of May 2025. The wider hand laborers and material movers group had a median of $38,220 and about 904,200 projected openings a year (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wages).
Those two occupations sit under one roof, twenty meters apart. Fulfillment and inbound pays more, is growing rather than flat, and asks for a certification you can obtain rather than a degree. That is the argument for writing your page toward fulfillment if you can do the work, and saying so in your title line.
General merchandise retailers employ 20% of retail salespersons, the largest share of any industry, at a median of $16.58 an hour as of May 2025 (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
The other force reshaping these jobs is the return. Consumers were expected to return $849.9 billion of merchandise in 2025, 15.8% of annual sales, with the online return rate at 19.3% (National Retail Federation and Happy Returns, 15 October 2025). Almost all of it comes back through a store counter, which is why returns handling belongs on the page as a measured skill rather than a duty. Target's published guest service description instructs team members to "attempt every return or exchange and follow register prompts" (Target careers site, corporate.target.com, accessed September 2026).
What salary you can expect in big-box retail
The median annual wage for retail sales workers was $35,560 as of May 2025, or $17.10 an hour. Among retail salespersons the median was $17.03 an hour, the lowest 10 percent earned less than $13.08 and the highest 10 percent more than $23.02 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Stockers and order fillers had a median of $37,330 over the same cycle and hand laborers and material movers $38,220, against $32,880 for cashiers (BLS, May 2025).
Your own number is not decided by negotiation, because entry rates in volume retail are set as a band before you walk in. It is decided by three things settled at or before your start date: the job area you applied to, the shift differentials you will work, and the equipment and systems you can already be rostered on. Your resume either states all three or leaves them out.
Key takeaways for a Target resume
- Pick one published job area and write the whole page to it.
- Put availability under the summary as days and times, not as "flexible".
- Treat fulfillment as the differentiator: pickup, drive up and ship from store are three different jobs.
- Separate pick rate from pick accuracy, and give a number you can defend.
- Add inventory and backroom accuracy; a pick failure is now visible to a customer in minutes.
- List equipment tickets with the equipment type and your most recent evaluation year.
- Keep it one page and single column; the form parses it before anyone reads it.

Target resume questions, answered
How long should a Target resume be?
One page. These are high-volume applications read in batches, and a second page reads as padding. The exception is a leadership application, where two pages are reasonable once you have staffing, scheduling or safety ownership to describe.
Do I need retail experience to apply?
No. The typical entry-level education for retail sales workers is no formal educational credential (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), and big-box employers hire in volume from outside the sector. Warehousing, hospitality, grocery, landscaping and food service all substitute. Write them with numbers and they read as relevant.
Which job area should I apply to?
The one whose work you can already evidence. Published store hourly areas at one large general merchandise retailer include Specialty Sales, Service and Engagement, General Merchandise and Food Sales, plus support roles (Target careers site, corporate.target.com, accessed September 2026). If you can lift, scan and be evaluated on powered equipment, aim at fulfillment and inbound: stocking work pays more and is growing while the sales floor is flat.
What should I put if I have never picked an online order?
The transferable half. Order picking is speed, accuracy and following a scanned instruction under a clock, so warehouse picking, kitchen ticket work, pharmacy or parts counter fulfillment and delivery driving all map onto it. Say what the volume was, what the clock was, and what your error rate was if you know it.
How do I get from team member to team lead?
Published leadership roles at one large general merchandise retailer run Team Leader, Executive Team Leader, Store Director and District Senior Director (Target careers site, corporate.target.com, accessed September 2026). What a resume can do is show the two things leads are picked on before they are titled: cross-training across more than one area, and training other people. Put both on the page with counts, because "trained nine seasonal team members across two intakes" is the sentence that turns a team member application into a lead application.
