Summary

A coffee shop manager resume is a one to two page document showing the four numbers a cafe is run on, the food safety certification that lets you be the person in charge, and what your last health inspection looked like. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the daypart detail most applicants leave out, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

Coffee Shop Manager resume examples by experience level

A coffee shop manager resume is a one to two page document showing four numbers, one certificate and one inspection: average ticket, transactions an hour, waste as a share of cost of goods, labor as a share of sales, a food protection manager certification, and the score from your last health inspection.

A cafe is not a small store. A store sells things that keep; a cafe buys perishable milk and pastry, throws away what it does not sell by close, and pays an hourly team to stand there whether anyone comes in or not. Those two facts decide whether it makes money, and they are what an owner is reading your resume for.

  • The four percentages a cafe is measured on, and how to write yours

How to write a coffee shop manager resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, experience, a numbers block, certifications, and education. One page as a shift supervisor, two once you have run a store through a full year or carried more than one. Certifications sit high, above education and sometimes above skills, because in most jurisdictions a certificate decides whether you can legally be left in charge of the building.

Expert Tip

Get the food protection manager certification named, not just implied

There are two food safety credentials and applicants confuse them constantly. A food handler card is the employee-level one: ServSafe Food Handler is a 40-question exam, valid three years, accredited by ANAB to ASTM 2659 (ServSafe, servsafe.com). Every barista may need one depending on the state.

The manager-level one is different. The ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification is a 90-question exam, valid five years, accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board under Conference for Food Protection standards (ServSafe, servsafe.com). It exists because the model FDA Food Code provision at section 2-102.12 requires that at least one employee, the person in charge at the time of inspection, be a certified food protection manager who passed a test that is part of an accredited program.

Write the exact name of yours, the awarding body and the expiry date. It is the closest thing this job has to a license.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you apply to a chain, because multi-unit operators screen applications through a system before a district manager reads them.

Choosing the best resume format for a coffee shop manager resume

Reverse chronological, one page until you have run a store for a full year, two once you have multi-unit responsibility, an opening, or a P&L you can describe. Hospitality resumes are read for tenure as much as achievement, because turnover is the industry's most expensive problem. If you stayed somewhere three years, the dates are doing work for you, so keep them visible and do not hide short jobs behind a functional layout.

The certification belongs in the header, not at the bottom. It is the first thing a multi-unit operator checks, because an uncertified manager cannot be scheduled alone in a store that needs a certified person in charge.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: store type and volume, team size, the numbers you moved, and your certification.

Coffee shop manager running a 1,900 square foot cafe with a team of fourteen, annual sales of roughly $1.1 million and a drive-through. Raised average ticket from $6.40 to $7.85 in eighteen months through a reworked pairing prompt and a bakery case rebuild, while holding labor at target and bringing food waste down by four percentage points. ServSafe Certified Food Protection Manager; last two health inspections passed with no critical violations.

Multi-unit coffee manager adaptable resume summary example

Multi-unit manager responsible for three cafes, 46 staff and combined annual sales near $3.4 million, including one new store opened from build-out to first trade in eleven weeks. Standardized opening and closing procedures, espresso calibration and the waste log across all three sites, which took combined food waste down by five percentage points and cut hourly turnover by a third year on year. ServSafe Certified Food Protection Manager and SCA Barista Skills trained; every store passed its last inspection with no critical violations.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Coffee Shop Manager, Winooski Falls Coffee, Burlington, VT, April 2022 to Present. 1,900 square feet, drive-through, fourteen staff, roughly $1.1 million annual sales.

Raised average ticket from $6.40 to $7.85 over eighteen months by rebuilding the bakery case around the morning daypart and training a specific pairing prompt rather than a generic upsell.

Cut food waste by four percentage points of cost of goods by moving to a twice-daily bake, introducing a written waste log at close and ordering milk against the previous week's actuals.

Hold labor at target across a week where the 7am to 9am peak carries about 40 percent of daily transactions, scheduling in half-hour increments against the point of sale traffic report.

Passed the last two health inspections with no critical violations, on a written opening and closing checklist, daily temperature logs and a quarterly deep clean schedule.

Built a four week barista training path with sign-offs, taking new hire time to bar from five weeks to three.

Put ticket, speed, waste and labor on the page

This is the block that separates a coffee shop manager from a store manager, and almost every applicant replaces it with the word "operations". A retail store manager is judged on sales, margin, shrink and payroll. A cafe manager is judged on four things a store manager never touches, because a cafe manufactures a perishable product to order in front of the customer.

Adaptable resume operating numbers example

Sales and ticket: roughly $1.1 million annual sales across about 620 transactions a day; average ticket raised from $6.40 to $7.85 in eighteen months.

Speed of service: drink build held inside the store's 90 second standard through the 7am to 9am peak, which carries around 40 percent of daily transactions; drive-through times tracked daily against the store target.

Cost of goods and waste: food waste cut by four percentage points through a twice-daily bake, a written waste log at close and milk ordered against previous week actuals.

Labor: fourteen staff scheduled in half-hour increments against the point of sale traffic report; labor held at target through the full year including the summer trough.

Each line is there for a different reason. Ticket is the only lever a manager fully controls, since traffic is mostly location and weather. Speed is the ceiling on revenue at peak: a cafe that cannot clear its morning queue has a limit no marketing moves. Waste is where the margin quietly goes, because everything in the case is worth zero at close. Labor is the largest controllable cost and the one that damages the other three when cut wrongly.

Give the before, the after and the period for at least two of them. An owner reading "cut food waste by four percentage points over eighteen months" knows exactly what that is worth.

Expert Tip

Write the inspection, not the platitude

Health inspection results are public in most US jurisdictions, which makes them one of the few claims on a hospitality resume that a hiring manager can verify in about a minute.

If your last inspections were clean, say so precisely: "last two inspections passed with no critical violations" is checkable and therefore credible. If there was a bad one and you fixed it, that is a better story in an interview, because remediation is the actual skill.

What does not work is "maintained high standards of food safety and hygiene". Everyone writes it, nobody can check it, and it wastes the line that could carry your certification and expiry date.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Group them: operations and cost control, coffee and equipment, food safety, and people and systems. Name the espresso machine and the point of sale platform, because both are training time saved.

Adaptable resume skills example

Operations and cost control: Profit and loss ownership, cost of goods and waste control, labor scheduling to daypart traffic, inventory and par levels, ordering against actuals, cash controls and deposits

Coffee and equipment: Espresso calibration and daily dialling, grinder maintenance, milk texturing standards, brew ratio and water quality, preventive maintenance schedules, backflushing and descaling routines

Food safety and compliance: HACCP-based procedures, temperature logs, allergen handling, opening and closing checklists, health inspection preparation, equipment servicing records

People and systems: Barista training paths with sign-offs, scheduling software, Square and Toast point of sale, daily sales and traffic reporting, interviewing and onboarding

List your education and certifications

Certifications first, with the awarding body and the expiry. Education after.

Adaptable resume certifications and education example

ServSafe Certified Food Protection Manager, National Restaurant Association, valid through 2029. Ninety question examination, accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board under Conference for Food Protection standards.

Vermont Food Handler training, completed 2021. SCA Barista Skills, Foundation and Intermediate, Specialty Coffee Association, 2023. First Aid and CPR, American Red Cross, 2025.

Associate of Applied Science, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Community College of Vermont, 2019.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics gives the typical entry-level education for food service managers as a high school diploma or equivalent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). The degree is optional; the food protection manager certification effectively is not, and a lapsed one means you cannot be the person in charge during an inspection.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no coffee cup graphics. Chain operators parse applications into a system, and a decorated template is where that parsing fails. Save as PDF named for yourself and the role: rosalie-duquette-coffee-shop-manager-resume.pdf.

Do

Put the exact name of your food protection manager certification and its expiry in the header. Give store size, daily transactions and team size so volume is visible. Move at least two numbers with a before, an after and a period. State your last inspection result plainly. Name the espresso machine and the point of sale platform. Say what your peak daypart is and what share of the day it carries. Mention turnover if yours improved.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "passionate about coffee"; every applicant does. Do not claim a labor or food cost percentage you cannot explain in an interview. Do not list latte art as a management skill. Do not hide a short tenure behind a functional layout. Do not put the owner's P&L figures on a public document, and do not name a supplier's cost price.

Statistical insight

Demand is steady, margins are not

Coffee demand is not the problem. The National Coffee Association's Spring 2026 National Coffee Data Trends report found 66 percent of US adults had drunk coffee in the past day and 73 percent in the past week, with 58 percent having had a specialty coffee (National Coffee Association, released 14 April 2026).

The problem is what it costs to serve. The National Restaurant Association's 2026 State of the Restaurant Industry found that more than nine in ten operators cite food, labor, insurance, energy and swipe fees as significant challenges, and that 42 percent of operators reported their establishment was not profitable in the previous year (National Restaurant Association, 12 February 2026).

That gap is your whole resume. An owner is not looking for someone who loves coffee, because demand is already there. They are looking for the person who can hold cost of goods, waste and labor while the queue still clears by nine. Write for the second problem.

If you run a drive-through, the times are a real credential. The 2025 Drive-Thru Study put the average service time across the brands measured at 4 minutes 15 seconds, with order accuracy at 87 percent, and the fastest beverage segment brand at 4 minutes 25 seconds total time (Intouch Insight, published 1 October 2025). If your store beats a published benchmark, name the benchmark and your number.

What salary you can expect as a coffee shop manager

The median annual wage for food service managers was $69,390 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $45,960 and the highest 10 percent more than $107,640 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).

Setting moves that number more than title does. Food services and drinking places, where most cafe managers work, pay a median of $65,060 against $82,170 in traveler accommodation and $79,450 in educational services (BLS, May 2025). A cafe inside a hotel or on a campus pays differently from an identical cafe on a high street, and the work differs too: contract catering, institutional purchasing, and a semester or occupancy cycle instead of a retail one.

The occupation is also unusually entrepreneurial: self-employed workers make up 31 percent of food service managers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). That is why P&L ownership, opening experience and vendor management read differently here than in most retail. They are what gets you hired to open a second site, or to run someone else's while you plan your own.

Key takeaways for a coffee shop manager resume

  1. Put the exact food protection manager certification and its expiry in the header.
  2. Give store size, daily transactions and team size, so volume is visible in one line.
  3. Move at least two of ticket, speed, waste and labor, with a before, an after and a period.
  4. State your last inspection result plainly, because it is publicly checkable.
  5. Name the espresso machine, the grinder routine and the point of sale platform.
  6. Show that you schedule against daypart traffic, not against a fixed roster.
  7. Mention turnover and training time to bar; both are money to an operator.

Coffee shop manager resume questions, answered

How long should a coffee shop manager resume be?

One page as a shift supervisor or a first-time manager. Two once you have run a store through a full year, opened one, or carried more than one site. Anything longer is padding, and hospitality hiring managers read fast.

Do I need a ServSafe certification to manage a coffee shop?

You need a food protection manager certification of some kind in most places. The model FDA Food Code provision at section 2-102.12 requires that at least one employee, the person in charge at the time of inspection, be a certified food protection manager who passed a test that is part of an accredited program. ServSafe is the most widely recognized such program: a 90-question exam, valid five years, ANAB accredited under Conference for Food Protection standards (ServSafe, servsafe.com). Check your state and county, since adoption of the Food Code varies.

What percentages should I put on my resume?

Only the ones you can explain and are allowed to share. Movement is safer and more persuasive than absolute figures: "cut food waste by four percentage points over eighteen months" tells an operator what you did without publishing the owner's profit and loss statement. If you quote an absolute cost percentage, be ready to explain how it was calculated.

How do I write a coffee shop manager resume with only barista experience?

Write the supervisory parts of the barista job as the job: opens and closes, cash handling and deposits, ordering, training new staff, running a bar at peak, calibration and maintenance, covering when the manager was out. Then get the food protection manager certification before you apply. It removes the biggest reason to pass over an internal candidate.

Does specialty coffee training matter to an employer?

It depends on the operator. An independent or specialty cafe cares a great deal, and a credential such as the Specialty Coffee Association's Barista Skills modules is worth naming. A high-volume chain cares more about speed, labor and inspection results. Read the posting: if it talks about origin, roast and dialling in, lead with craft; if it talks about sales, staffing and standards, lead with the numbers.
