Summary
A Starbucks resume is a one page hourly retail application for barista and coffee shop crew work, built around the bar positions you can run, the peak you can hold, and the opens and closes you will genuinely take. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the food handler rule that decides your start date, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for the occupation.
Starbucks resume examples by experience level
A Starbucks resume is an hourly coffee retail application: one page, built around the bar positions you can run, the volume you have held at peak, and the hours you will actually work.
This guide is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Starbucks or any other coffee company, and it contains no inside knowledge of any employer's hiring. It uses what the company publishes openly about its own application process and career ladder, alongside federal wage data, as one worked example of how large coffee chains hire crew. Everything in it transfers to any cafe, drive-thru coffee stand or licensed kiosk.
Understand what you are applying to. A coffee store at peak is a short production line with a queue attached, running three order channels at once. The person reading your application wants to know whether you can stand in one position on that line without the line stopping.
Resume guide for a Starbucks resume
This guide and the corresponding Starbucks resume example will cover:
- How to write a barista and coffee crew resume, section by section
- Which bar position to write toward, and what each one is measured on
- Three adaptable summaries: first coffee job, experienced barista and shift supervisor
- How to write availability so an open or a close reads as a promise
- What the market looks like and what these roles pay
How to write a Starbucks resume
Six sections: contact header, summary, availability, work experience, skills, and education and certifications. One page, always, until you are applying for a store manager post.
The order is unusual on purpose. Availability sits directly under the summary because it is a filter rather than a feature. A store that cannot fill 4:30am opens will pass over a faster barista who can only work afternoons, and it will do that before reading a single bullet.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Title line and summary | Which position on the floor is this person for? | Top, under the name |
| Availability | Can they cover opens, closes and weekends? | Directly under the summary |
| Work experience | Have they held volume, and did they stay? | Reverse chronological, with numbers |
| Certifications | Can they be rostered on food in week one? | Own block, near the bottom |
Quantify the shift, not the job
Starbucks publishes its own resume advice openly on its careers site, and it is the same advice a shift manager gives when they finally get around to hiring: use action verbs such as "led, optimized, launched, improved" and "Quantify results when possible, numbers make an impact tangible" (Starbucks careers site, careers.starbucks.com, accessed September 2026).
In coffee that means transactions an hour, drinks an hour, ticket times, waste, till variance and the number of people you trained. Nobody expects a barista to arrive with a spreadsheet, but "ran the register through a 120 transaction hour" is checkable in a way that "worked in a fast-paced environment" is not.
Run the file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you upload it. These applications are parsed into a structured record before a human opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for a Starbucks resume
Reverse chronological, one page, single column, no photograph.
A functional or skills-first format hurts you here. The reader is checking two things that only a timeline answers: whether you have worked somewhere busy, and whether you stayed more than four months. A format that hides dates reads as one built to hide dates.

Four lines. City and state only, never the street address. The second line is the job as the employer names it, and the third is the line that gets you read.
Make use of a summary
Three or four lines: the position you are applying for, how long you have done this kind of work, one number showing volume, and the hours you can cover.
Coffee crew member applying for a barista role, with a current California Food Handler Card and eighteen months of counter and drive-thru work at a quick service restaurant. Ran the front register through a 7am to 10am peak averaging 120 transactions an hour across two tills, and closed four nights a week including the full clean-down of the beverage station. Barista with three years on a high volume espresso bar, trained on every position on the floor: register, warming, hot bar, cold bar and drive-thru window. Hold bar times through the 6:30am to 9:30am peak at an average of 42 seconds a drink while calling and sequencing for a two-person bar, and carry the store food safety log under a California Food Handler Card. Open five days a week and have trained nine new crew members through their first 30 and 90 day checkpoints.
Shift supervisor running a five to seven person floor in a drive-thru coffee store taking roughly 1,100 transactions a day. Cut average drive-thru total time from 5 minutes 12 seconds to 3 minutes 58 seconds over two quarters by resequencing the bar and moving mobile order handoff off the main counter, while holding beverage waste at 1.4% of sales. Open and close, run the safe and the deposit, own the food safety log, and have developed four baristas into supervisor training.
Right vs wrong: the same Starbucks resume summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Barista with three years on a high volume espresso bar, trained on register, warming, hot bar, cold bar and drive-thru. | Friendly people person with a love of coffee and great customer service skills. |
| Hold bar times at an average of 42 seconds a drink through the 6:30am to 9:30am peak. | Able to work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. |
| Open five days a week and hold a current California Food Handler Card. | Flexible and available to work various shifts as needed. |
The right column can be rostered on Monday. The left column has been written by three hundred other applicants for the same store, in almost the same words.
Outline your experience
Employer, format of the site, city, dates, then three to five bullets. Every bullet carries a number, because volume and speed are the entire claim in coffee.
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| Made coffee and espresso drinks for customers | Built 180 to 240 beverages a shift on a two-person bar, averaging 42 seconds a drink at peak |
| Worked the cash register | Ran the front till through a 120 transaction hour with till variance under $2.00 across 14 months |
| Provided excellent customer service | Handled the mobile order handoff point through a 90 order morning with no rebuilds logged |
| Cleaned and restocked the store | Ran the closing clean-down of the beverage station and brew equipment, 5 nights a week for two years |
| Helped train new staff | Trained 9 new crew members through their first 30 and 90 day checkpoints, 8 still in the store |
Barista, Drive-Thru Coffee Store, Sacramento, CA, June 2023 to Present
Work every position on the floor: register, warming oven, hot bar, cold bar and drive-thru window, on a roster of roughly 1,100 transactions a day.
Build 180 to 240 beverages a shift on a two-person bar, holding an average of 42 seconds a drink through the 6:30am to 9:30am peak.
Open five days a week from 4:30am: brew calibration, dating and pulling the pastry case, the opening temperature log and the till float.
Own the store food safety log across 3 coolers and 2 warmers, with no critical findings in the last two county inspections.
Trained 9 new crew members through their first 30 and 90 day checkpoints; 8 are still on the roster.
Write the bar position, the peak you can hold and the hours nobody wants
This is the section that separates a coffee resume from every other retail resume, and almost nobody includes it. A coffee store at peak splits into positions, and each one is bought for a different reason.
| Position | What the store is actually buying | What to put on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Register | Speed and accuracy on order entry, modifiers, upsell and payment | Transactions an hour, till variance, modifier accuracy, card and mobile payment handling |
| Bar, hot and cold | Beverage throughput and recipe accuracy under a queue | Drinks an hour, seconds a drink at peak, recipe range, remake rate |
| Warming and food | Food holding, allergens, dating and the pastry case | Food handler card, temperature logs, allergen handling, waste percentage |
| Drive-thru window | Two conversations at once and total time on a timer | Total time, cars an hour, headset and sequencing |
| Mobile order handoff | A third order channel with no queue to read | Orders staged an hour, rebuild rate, labeling and sequencing |
| Support and floater | Restock, dish, lobby and covering whoever is drowning | Every position learned, the closing clean-down, restock cadence |
The mobile order channel is the part outsiders underestimate. It puts orders into the bar that nobody standing in the shop can see, so the queue in front of you is not the workload in front of you. If you have worked a mobile-heavy site, say so and give the orders an hour.
Then write availability as a block, not as the word "flexible".
Availability: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 4:30am, Saturday and Sunday open to close
Also available for: opens, closes, holiday trading periods, inventory mornings, and cover at short notice within 45 minutes
Not available: Wednesdays until 2pm through June 2027, due to a fixed class
Notice period: two weeks
The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the shape of this work plainly: part-time work is common, and "Because restaurants and other eating places typically have extended dining hours, work shifts often include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays" (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, accessed September 2026). Early mornings and closes are the scarce commodity. Saying in writing that you will take a 4:30am open puts you in a much smaller pile, and being honest in the "not available" line stops a rota problem surfacing in week two.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Ten to fourteen entries in three groups: bar and floor, systems, and food safety. No soft skills.
Bar and floor: Espresso extraction and dial-in, Steaming and milk texture, Cold bar and blended beverages, Drink sequencing and calling, Drive-thru headset, Mobile order staging
Systems and cash: Point of sale and modifiers, Mobile and contactless payment, Till float and variance, Deposits and safe counts, Inventory counts and ordering
Food safety and equipment: Temperature and sanitiser logs, Allergen handling, Date coding and rotation, Brewer and grinder calibration, Espresso machine backflush and cleaning
Languages: English (native), Spanish (conversational)
"Team player" occupies the line where a food handler card should be.
List your education and certifications
Certifications first, because they decide what you can be rostered on in your first week. Education after, briefly, and school is enough.
California Food Handler Card, ANSI ASTM E2659 accredited provider, issued 2025, valid through 2028
Food Protection Manager Certification, ANSI accredited program, 2026
CPR and First Aid, American Red Cross, 2026
High School Diploma, Luther Burbank High School, Sacramento, CA, 2023
Associate of Arts in progress, Business Administration, Sacramento City College, expected 2027
Get the food handler card before you apply, not after. In California, paid food employees involved in the preparation, storage or service of food must obtain a Food Handler Card "within 30 days after the date of hire", it is valid for three years from issuance, and the training provider must run an ANSI ASTM E2659 accredited program (County of Orange Health Care Agency, Environmental Health, accessed September 2026). Local rules differ, so check your own county or state health department. A candidate who already holds the card can be put on food on day one instead of day thirty, and on a page of otherwise identical applications that is a real difference.
Choose the right layout and design
One page, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no icons, no coffee cup graphics, no skill bars. Hourly applications go through a portal that parses the file before anyone reads it, and two columns and graphics are where parsing breaks.
Name the position in your title line as the employer names it. Write availability as specific days and start times. Put a number in every experience bullet: drinks, transactions, seconds, percentages. List the food handler card with its issue year and expiry. Say plainly that you will take opens, closes and holiday trading.
Do not write "flexible" when you mean "afternoons only". Do not describe yourself as a coffee lover; the store is hiring a shift, not an enthusiast. Do not hide a four month job behind a functional layout, since short tenures are normal in this sector and lying about them is not. Do not claim a certification you have not been issued. Do not add a photograph or a graphic to a parsed application.
Barista job market and outlook
A very large, growing occupation with turnover so high that the resume competes on availability and retention rather than credentials.
| Measure | Food and beverage serving and related workers |
|---|---|
| Employment, 2025 | 5,143,000 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 5% growth, 280,800 jobs |
| Projected annual openings | About 1,078,500 |
| Typical entry-level education | No formal educational credential |
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $31,710, or $15.24 an hour |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025-35 projections. Baristas are counted inside this occupational group.
One in five of these jobs turns over every year
Set the two federal numbers side by side. The occupation held 5,143,000 jobs in 2025 and is projected to see about 1,078,500 openings a year over the decade, even though it only adds 280,800 jobs across the whole ten years (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). Almost every opening is a replacement, which works out at roughly one position in five turning over annually.
Fast food and counter workers alone accounted for 3,855,900 of those jobs in 2025, with a median of $15.00 an hour (BLS, May 2025).
That churn is the whole hiring context. Stores are not screening for talent, they are screening for someone who will still be there in March and who can cover the hours the current crew will not. Two lines on your resume answer both questions: how long you stayed at your last job, and exactly when you can work.
Where the jobs sit:
| Setting | Share of employment | Median hourly wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Food services and drinking places | 81% | $15.00 |
| Healthcare and social assistance | 4% | $17.12 |
| Retail trade | 4% | $16.72 |
| Educational services | 3% | $17.02 |
| Traveler accommodation | 2% | $16.82 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025.
Scale is the other half, and chains publish it. Starbucks reported 40,990 stores globally at the end of its 2025 fiscal year, of which 16,864 were in the United States, with the fiscal year ending 28 September 2025 (Starbucks, fourth quarter and full fiscal year 2025 results). A network that size hires continuously and through a form, which is why your file is parsed before it is read.
What salary you can expect as a barista
The median wage across food and beverage serving and related workers was $15.24 an hour, or $31,710 a year, as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $10.98 an hour and the highest 10 percent more than $20.67 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
The industry table above is the most useful thing on this page for your own pay. Coffee counters inside retail trade paid a median of $16.72 an hour against $15.00 in food services and drinking places, and healthcare sites paid $17.12 (BLS, May 2025). A licensed kiosk in a hospital or a grocery store is the same craft on a different payroll line.
What moves your own number is rarely negotiation, because entry rates in volume hospitality are set as a band. It is shift differential for opens and overnights, the certifications you hold on day one, and promotion. Starbucks publishes its store ladder openly as barista, shift supervisor, assistant store manager, store manager and district manager, and states that "Over 60% of our coffeehouse leaders started their careers with us as baristas", with training checkpoints at 30, 90 and 190 days (Starbucks careers site, careers.starbucks.com, accessed September 2026). Writing your resume toward the supervisor rung, by showing that you open, close, train and handle cash, is the realistic route to a raise.
Key takeaways for a Starbucks resume
- Name the position you want in the title line, in the employer's own words.
- Put availability under the summary as days and start times, never as "flexible".
- Say in writing that you will take opens, closes and holiday trading.
- Give every bullet a number: drinks an hour, seconds a drink, transactions, waste, variance.
- Hold the food handler card before you apply; it decides what you can do in week one.
- Show tenure, because turnover is the problem the store is actually trying to solve.
- Write toward the supervisor rung: opens, closes, cash, training.

Starbucks resume questions, answered
How long should a Starbucks resume be?
One page. These are high volume hourly applications read in batches by a store manager between shifts, and a second page reads as padding. Two pages only makes sense for an assistant store manager or store manager post with staffing, scheduling and inventory ownership to describe.
Do I need coffee experience to get hired as a barista?
No. The typical entry-level education for this occupation is no formal educational credential, and training is short-term and on the job (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Any job with a queue, a till and a clock substitutes. Write it with numbers and it reads as relevant.
Should I get a food handler card before applying?
Yes, where your state requires one. In California the card must be obtained within 30 days of hire, it lasts three years, and the course must be ANSI ASTM E2659 accredited (County of Orange Health Care Agency, Environmental Health, accessed September 2026). Turning up with it already in hand removes a thirty day constraint from the roster, which is a small thing to you and a useful thing to a manager.
What does the application process look like?
Starbucks publishes three steps openly: explore roles in the Career Hub, apply online and upload a recent resume, then watch for an email confirmation and check status in the hub while a recruiter reviews it (Starbucks careers site, careers.starbucks.com, accessed September 2026). That is public information rather than an account of how any individual store runs its hiring, and most large coffee employers work the same way.
How do I show speed on a resume if nobody timed me?
Use what your old store did track and be honest about the source: transactions on your till in an hour, orders on a ticket screen, cars through a drive-thru timer, or covers in a service period. If none of that exists, use structural facts instead, such as the number of positions you can work and how many people you trained.
