Ms. Danielle Okafor Store Recruitment Prairie Point Home Furnishings Bolingbrook, United States

Application for Goods Flow Co-worker, Bolingbrook store, reference GF-2261

Dear Ms. Okafor,

I am applying for the Goods Flow Co-worker position at your Bolingbrook store, reference GF-2261. I have spent five years in a warehouse-format home furnishings store, split between the self-serve furniture area and the checkout lanes, and I have been evaluated on sit-down counterbalance and stand-up reach trucks. I can work evenings, full weekends, truck days and the holiday intake, including overnight recovery shifts.

The result I would bring is about accuracy rather than speed. My aisles were running a 4.1% customer self-serve pick error rate, which meant people were carrying the wrong carton to a checkout and then carrying it back again. I recounted the area, rebuilt the location labeling and changed the sequence we replenished in, and the error rate came down to 1.6% over two inventory cycles. Across the same period I unloaded an average of 14 pallets a shift over three trailers a week, and trained 11 seasonal co-workers through two holiday intakes.

Your Bolingbrook store opened in March and is heading into its first full holiday season, and the posting reads as though you need people who can be useful in more than one place while the pattern settles. I can run a checkout lane at roughly 22 transactions an hour, I have covered returns, and I have maintained a powered equipment inspection log for 18 months. I would rather be rostered across goods flow and checkout than be a specialist in one aisle.

My most recent forklift evaluation was in April 2025 and I hold a current Illinois food handler card. I can start on two weeks' notice, and I am available for an interview at the store on any weekday afternoon. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Magnus Thorsen

Summary

An Ikea cover letter is a one page letter for a warehouse-format retailer that names the co-worker area you are applying to, the shifts you can genuinely cover, and one measured result from a floor you have worked. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, what changes between the sales side and the goods flow side, and why an optional letter is still worth writing.

Ikea cover letter examples by experience level

An Ikea cover letter is a one page letter that tells a big-box retailer which part of the store you are applying to, which shifts you can cover, and what changed on a floor you worked.

This guide is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to IKEA or any other retailer, and it contains no inside knowledge of any company's hiring. It uses what these employers publish openly about their recruitment steps as one worked example, and it applies to any warehouse-format or general merchandise store.

The letter is usually optional. IKEA's published recruitment guidance describes uploading a CV and adds that a cover letter is optional, though it can help present your motivation (IKEA careers site, ikea.com, accessed September 2026). Optional is not useless: in a pile where most applicants upload a resume and nothing else, a short letter that answers the scheduling question gets read.

Guide to an Ikea cover letter

This guide and the corresponding Ikea cover letter example will cover:

  • How to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
  • Why the job area and your availability belong in the first three sentences
  • What a measured result looks like when the work is hourly and physical
  • When to write one at all, given that it is usually optional

Expert Tip

Put the roster answer in the first four lines

The person reading your letter is holding a schedule with holes in it, and the holes are almost always Friday evening, the weekend, truck days and the overnight recovery window.

So the opening paragraph does four things in three sentences: names the post and the job area, says how long you have done that work, lists the equipment you have been evaluated on, and states the hours you can cover.

Write the hours as days and times. "Evenings from 3pm Monday to Friday, both weekend days open to close, truck days and the holiday intake" is a schedule. "Flexible availability" costs the reader a phone call to interpret. Check the file with the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you upload it.

Dear Ms. Okafor,

Open with the job area, not with enthusiasm

Large retailers hire into a named function. IKEA publishes its job areas openly on its US careers site, including Customer Relations, Food and Restaurant, Logistics and Supply Chain, and Sales and Commercial (IKEA careers site, seeacareerwithus.com, accessed September 2026). The form makes you pick one before you upload anything, so name the same one in your first line, in the employer's own words. That tells the reader the file is in the right pile and that you read the posting.

✅ Right❌ Wrong
I am applying for the Goods Flow Co-worker position at your Bolingbrook store, reference GF-2261.I am writing to express my interest in any available positions at your store.
I have been evaluated on sit-down counterbalance and stand-up reach trucks.I am a fast learner and pick up new skills quickly.
I can work evenings, full weekends, truck days and the holiday intake.I have flexible availability and can work whenever needed.

The middle paragraph: one number from a real shift

Hourly retail work produces numbers constantly and almost nobody puts them in a letter. Pallets unloaded, locations replenished, transactions an hour, till variance, pick error rate, covers served, recovery completion. Pick one, give it a before, an after and a period, and say what you changed.

One worked result beats a list of duties: a duty list describes the job, a result describes you doing it. With no retail history, use whatever runs on shifts and volume, such as a warehouse season, a kitchen, a grounds crew or a loading bay.

What to say about the store itself

Three sentences, specific to that location. Use what is publicly visible: opening date, whether it is a full-size store or a smaller plan-and-order point, the departments in the posting, the shifts the ad lists. Then say what you would cover beyond your own area, because cross-cover is what store managers protect most and advertise least.

What not to do is tell the retailer its own brand history. Careers material for these employers asks for enthusiasm for the business and an interest in home furnishings, a bar you clear by naming a department you like working in.

Do

Name the exact post, the reference number and the job area in the first sentence. State your equipment evaluations and their most recent year. Write availability as days and times. Give one measured result with a before and an after. Offer cross-cover into a second area. Close with your notice period and when you can interview.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not say you are applying for "any position". Do not write "flexible" when you mean "some evenings". Do not repeat your resume in paragraph form. Do not tell the company its own history back to it. Do not exceed one page, and do not attach a photograph.

Statistical insight

Retail hiring is volume hiring, which cuts both ways

There were 4,271,400 retail sales workers in 2025, and about 550,600 openings a year are projected over the 2025 to 2035 decade even though employment itself is projected to change by 0% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wages and 2025-35 projections).

Nearly all of those openings come from replacement rather than growth. Stores are almost always hiring, so a rejection is rarely final, and churn is the reader's main worry: anything signaling you will still be there in a year is worth more than another adjective.

Logistics is the better bet on the numbers, with stockers and order fillers projected to grow 9% over the same decade at a median wage of $37,330 as of May 2025, against $35,560 for retail sales workers (BLS, same source).

Key takeaways for an Ikea cover letter

  1. Name the post, the reference and the job area in the first sentence.
  2. Put your availability in the opening paragraph, as days and times.
  3. List the equipment you have been evaluated on, with the most recent year.
  4. Give one measured result with a before, an after and a period.
  5. Say what you would cover outside your own area.
  6. Keep it under one page and under 350 words.
  7. Write one even when the form says optional, if the resume cannot carry it.

Pair it with a matching Ikea resume, and build both in 15 minutes.

Ikea cover letter questions, answered

Do I need a cover letter if the application says it is optional?

Not always, but it is cheap. IKEA's published guidance describes the cover letter as optional while noting it can help present your motivation (IKEA careers site, ikea.com, accessed September 2026). Write one when you have something the resume cannot carry: an unusual availability pattern, a career change, or a gap that looks worse unexplained.

How long should the letter be?

Under one page and under 350 words, in four paragraphs. Recruiters read in batches against a schedule, and a long letter is a slow answer to a short question.

What if I have never worked in retail?

Lead with shift work and volume from wherever you have it: warehousing, hospitality, grocery, construction, care work. The claim that matters is that you worked to a roster, at pace, and something measurable improved. Then be explicit about which job area you are applying to.

Should I name the retailer's products or values in the letter?

Only lightly, and only if it is true. Published careers material for these employers asks for an interest in the business and the product, which you show by naming a department you like working in and why. Half a sentence is enough.

Who should I address the letter to?

The recruiter or hiring manager named in the posting. If no name is given, address the store's recruitment team by location rather than using "To whom it may concern". Do not phone the store to ask: large retailers route hiring through a portal, and some publish that applications are accepted that way only.
