Summary
An Ikea resume is a one page retail application for a warehouse-format home furnishings store, built around the co-worker area you are applying to, the hours you can genuinely cover, and whether you can work goods flow as well as the sales floor. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the published recruitment steps these retailers use, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for retail and stockroom work.
Ikea resume examples by experience level
An Ikea resume is a retail application for a warehouse-format home furnishings store: one page, built around the co-worker area you are applying to, the hours you can genuinely work, and whether you can move stock as well as talk to customers.
This guide is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to IKEA or any other retailer, and it contains no inside knowledge of any company's hiring. It uses what the company publishes openly about its own recruitment process, alongside federal wage data, as one worked example of how large warehouse-format stores hire. All of it transfers to any big-box home furnishings or general merchandise employer.
Understand the building first. A warehouse-format store is two businesses on one footprint: a showroom people browse, and a self-serve warehouse where they pick flat packs off racking. Most applicants write for the showroom and ignore the half that does most of the hiring.
Resume guide for an Ikea resume
This guide and the corresponding Ikea resume example will cover:
- How to write a big-box retail resume, section by section
- Which co-worker area to apply to, and how the resume changes for each
- Three adaptable summaries: first retail job, experienced co-worker and team lead
- How to write availability so it survives a structured application
- What the market looks like and what these roles pay
How to write an Ikea resume
Six sections: contact header, summary, availability, work experience, skills, and education and certifications. One page until you are applying for a management post.
The order is not conventional. Availability sits high because it is a filter, not a feature: a store that needs Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings covered will pass over a stronger candidate who can only work weekday mornings, before reading a single bullet.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Co-worker area and summary | Which part of the store is this person for? | Top, under the name |
| Availability | Can they cover the shifts we cannot fill? | Directly under the summary |
| Work experience | Have they done volume, and did they stay? | Reverse chronological, with numbers |
| Skills and certifications | Can they be put on equipment or a register on week one? | Own block, near the bottom |
Apply to one job area, not to the store
Large retailers hire into a named function, and the form makes you choose one before you upload anything.
IKEA publishes its job areas openly on its United States careers site: Customer Relations, Food and Restaurant, Interior Design and Visual Merchandising, IT and Digital Solutions, Logistics and Supply Chain, People and HR, Property and Facility Management, Risk and Compliance, and Sales and Commercial (IKEA careers site, seeacareerwithus.com, accessed September 2026).
Four of those hire in volume on the floor: sales, logistics, food and customer relations. Pick one and write the page to it. "Retail Co-worker, Logistics and Goods Flow" answers the form. "Hardworking team player seeking any position" asks the recruiter to do the sorting.
Run the file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker first; these applications are parsed into a structured record before a human opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for an Ikea resume
Reverse chronological, one page, single column, no photograph.
A functional resume is actively harmful here. The reader is checking two things only a timeline answers: whether you have handled a busy floor, and whether you stay. A format that hides dates reads as one hiding short tenures.

Four lines. City and state only. The second line is the job area you are applying to, written in the retailer's own words.
Make use of a summary
Three to four lines: the job area, how long you have done this work, one number showing volume, and your hours.
Retail co-worker applying to the logistics and goods flow team, with two years of weekend and evening work in a grocery stockroom and a current powered industrial truck evaluation. Unloaded and put away an average of 14 pallets a shift and covered the 5am replenishment window three mornings a week across two school years. Available evenings, full weekends and the holiday season, including overnight recovery shifts.
Retail co-worker with five years in warehouse-format home furnishings, split between the self-serve furniture area and the checkout lanes. Cut self-serve pick errors on my aisles from 4.1% to 1.6% over two inventory cycles by rebuilding the location labeling, and trained 11 seasonal co-workers through two holiday intakes. Sit-down and stand-up forklift certified, and available for truck days, weekends and evenings.
Goods flow team leader running a 19-person shift across receiving, replenishment and self-serve recovery in a 300,000 square foot home furnishings store. Took overnight replenishment completion from 82% to 97% across a trading year while holding recordable injuries at zero for 21 months. Manage the trailer schedule with two carriers, own the powered equipment inspection program and have promoted 6 co-workers.
Right vs wrong: the same Ikea resume summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Retail co-worker with five years in warehouse-format home furnishings, split between the self-serve furniture area and the checkout lanes. | Enthusiastic retail professional with a strong work ethic and excellent customer service skills. |
| Cut self-serve pick errors on my aisles from 4.1% to 1.6% over two inventory cycles. | Responsible for maintaining stock levels and assisting customers. |
| Sit-down and stand-up forklift certified, available for truck days, weekends and evenings. | Flexible and available to work various shifts as needed. |
The right column can be checked or scheduled. The wrong column has been written by four hundred other applicants for the same opening, in the same words.
Outline your experience
Employer, store format, city, dates, then three to five bullets. Every bullet carries a number, because volume is the whole claim in this kind of retail.

Goods Flow Co-worker, Home Furnishings Warehouse Store, Schaumburg, IL, March 2021 to Present
Unload and put away an average of 14 pallets a shift across 3 trailer deliveries a week, on both sit-down and stand-up powered industrial trucks.
Replenish 90 to 120 self-serve locations a shift in a 14 aisle flat pack area, working from a handheld scanner against a pick list.
Rebuilt the location labeling on my aisles after a cycle count, cutting customer self-serve pick errors from 4.1% to 1.6% over two inventory cycles.
Trained 11 seasonal co-workers across two holiday intakes and completed the store powered equipment inspection log for 18 months.
Name the co-worker area you are applying to and the hours you can cover
This is the section that separates a big-box retail resume from every other retail resume, and most applicants leave it out. A warehouse-format store runs four floor-facing families of work, and each wants different evidence:
| Co-worker area | What the store is actually buying | What to put on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Sales and commercial | Product knowledge and room-level advice on the showroom floor | Category knowledge, attachment and add-on selling, design consultations, average basket |
| Logistics and supply chain | Throughput on goods flow, receiving, replenishment and the self-serve warehouse | Pallets a shift, locations replenished, scanner and powered equipment tickets, pick accuracy |
| Food and restaurant | Volume food service under health inspection | Covers served, food handler card, line and prep stations, temperature and allergen controls |
| Customer relations | Checkout, returns, exchanges, click-and-collect and complaint recovery | Transactions an hour, till variance, returns handled, order pickups staged |
Job areas as published by IKEA on its US careers site (seeacareerwithus.com, accessed September 2026).
The self-serve furniture area is the part outsiders underestimate. It is a racked warehouse the public walks through, so it is a pick face, a safety zone and a sales floor at once. Accuracy failures show up to customers within minutes rather than at the next cycle count, which is why label integrity and pick error rates land harder here than in a conventional store.
Then write availability as a block, not as the word "flexible".
Availability: Monday to Thursday from 3pm, Friday from 3pm, Saturday and Sunday open to close
Also available for: overnight recovery shifts, truck and delivery days, holiday season extended hours, inventory weekends
Not available: Tuesday mornings until 12pm through May 2027, due to a fixed class
Notice period: two weeks
Four lines do more than a paragraph of prose. Evening, weekend and overnight cover is the scarce commodity here, because those are the hours the store is busiest and applicants least willing. Saying plainly that you will take truck days and the holiday intake puts you in a smaller pile. Be honest in the "not available" line: a claim you cannot keep surfaces in week two, not week twenty.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Ten to fourteen entries in three groups: operations, equipment and systems, and safety tickets.
Operations: Goods flow and receiving, Self-serve replenishment, Cycle counting, Overnight recovery, Checkout and returns, Click-and-collect staging
Equipment and systems: Sit-down and stand-up powered industrial trucks, Pallet jack, Handheld RF scanner, Point of sale and returns, Warehouse management systems
Safety and compliance: Powered equipment pre-use inspection, Manual handling and team lift, Hazard reporting, Loss prevention awareness
Languages: English (native), Swedish (conversational)
Do not pad with soft skills. "Team player" occupies the space where a forklift ticket should be.
List your education and certifications
Certifications first; they decide what you can be rostered on in week one. Education after, briefly.
Powered Industrial Truck Operator, sit-down counterbalance and stand-up reach, employer-certified under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), most recent evaluation 2025
Food Handler Card, Illinois Department of Public Health approved provider, 2025
CPR and First Aid, American Red Cross, 2026
Associate of Applied Science, Supply Chain Management, Harper College, Palatine, IL, 2024
A forklift certification is not a card you own outright. Under OSHA's powered industrial truck standard the employer certifies that each operator has been trained and evaluated, and each operator's performance is evaluated at least once every three years (OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.178(l)). Write it the way the regulation works: the truck types you were evaluated on, and the year. A new employer will still evaluate you, but a candidate already signed off on a stand-up reach truck is a shorter path to a full roster.
Choose the right layout and design
One page, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no icons, no skill bars. These roles are filled through structured online applications and the file is parsed before anyone reads it, so two-column templates and graphics are where it breaks.
Name the job area in your title line, in the employer's own words. Write availability as specific days and times. Put a number in every experience bullet. List equipment tickets with the truck type and the most recent evaluation year. Say plainly if you will work truck days, overnights and the holiday intake.
Do not write "flexible" when you are not. Do not apply to six job areas with one generic file. Do not hide short tenures behind a functional format. Do not claim a forklift certification you have not been evaluated on. Do not add a photograph or a skills chart to a parsed application.
Big-box retail job market and outlook
A very large, flat occupation with enormous replacement demand, sitting next to a stockroom occupation that is growing.
| Measure | Retail sales workers |
|---|---|
| Employment, 2025 | 4,271,400 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0% (little or no change), -5,700 |
| Projected annual openings | About 550,600 |
| Typical entry-level education | No formal educational credential |
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $35,560 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025-35 projections.
The growth is in the warehouse, not on the showroom floor
Retail sales employment is projected to change by 0% between 2025 and 2035, a decline of 5,700 jobs. Over the same decade, stockers and order fillers are projected to grow 9%, an increase of 250,700 jobs, with a median annual wage of $37,330 as of May 2025. The wider group of hand laborers and material movers had a median of $38,220 and is projected to see about 904,200 openings a year over the decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wages).
Read those rows together and the strategy writes itself. Goods flow pays more than the sales floor, is growing rather than flat, and asks for a certification you can obtain rather than a degree. If you can lift, scan and be evaluated on powered equipment, apply to logistics first and say so in your title line.
Furniture, home furnishings, electronics and appliance retailers employ 7% of retail salespersons, against 20% in general merchandise retailers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), so the warehouse format is a smaller pool than it looks from the parking lot.
Scale is the other half, and these employers publish it. IKEA reported 222,000 co-workers worldwide in its 2025 financial year, up from 216,000, and opened 66 new sales locations (IKEA, year in review FY25, financial year ended 31 August 2025), across 504 stores in 63 markets (ikea.com, 28 November 2025). A network that size hires in batches, which is why the application is a form rather than a conversation.
What salary you can expect
The median annual wage for retail sales workers was $35,560 as of May 2025, or $17.10 an hour. Among retail salespersons, the lowest 10 percent earned less than $13.08 an hour and the highest 10 percent more than $23.02 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Stockers and order fillers had a median of $37,330 over the same cycle, and the broader hand laborers and material movers group $38,220 (BLS, May 2025). In a warehouse-format store both sit under one roof, which is the practical argument for writing toward goods flow if you can do the work.
What moves your own number is not negotiation, because entry rates in volume retail are set as a band. It is shift differential, equipment certification and the departments you can be rostered across, and all three are decided before your start date rather than after it.
Key takeaways for an Ikea resume
- Pick one co-worker area and write the page to it, in the retailer's published wording.
- Put availability under the summary, as days and times, not as "flexible".
- Give every bullet a number: pallets, locations, transactions, error rates, covers.
- List equipment tickets with the truck type and your most recent evaluation year.
- Say whether you will take truck days, overnights and the holiday intake.
- Keep it to one page, single column, no photograph; the form parses it first.
- Apply to logistics if you can do the work; it pays more and it is growing.

Ikea resume questions, answered
How long should an Ikea resume be?
One page. These are high-volume applications read in batches and a second page reads as padding. The exception is a management application, where two pages are reasonable once you have staffing, scheduling, budget or safety ownership to describe.
Do I need retail experience to apply?
No. The entry-level education for retail sales workers is no formal educational credential (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), and these employers hire in volume from outside the sector. Anything with shift discipline and physical volume substitutes: warehousing, hospitality, grocery, landscaping, moving. Write it with numbers and it reads as relevant.
What does the application process actually look like?
IKEA publishes its own six-step process openly: search and apply through the job portal with a profile and an uploaded CV, resume review, a phone screening, an interview with your future manager at a location or online, a hiring decision with a written offer, and onboarding through a pre-boarding portal (IKEA careers site, ikea.com, accessed September 2026). A cover letter is described there as optional. None of that is inside information, or a guarantee of how any individual store runs.
What kind of interview questions should I expect?
Behavioral ones. IKEA's published careers material says candidates should be prepared for questions about "how you handled various work situations in the past" and to discuss decision making, teamwork, problem solving and communication (IKEA careers site, seeacareerwithus.com, accessed September 2026). Prepare three or four worked stories with numbers, drawn from the bullets on your resume.
Is it worth getting a forklift certification before applying?
It widens what you can be rostered on and moves you toward the better-paid half of the store. Be precise: under OSHA's powered industrial truck standard the employer certifies each operator's training and evaluation, with performance evaluated at least every three years (OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.178(l)). List the truck types and the most recent evaluation year rather than claiming a transferable license.
