A rowing coach resume is a one to two page document about the hardest thing the job asks of you: deciding who sits in which boat, and being able to show why.

Everything else in rowing is shared. The squad trains together, lifts together and ergs in the same room. Then eight of them race and the rest watch from the bank, and the coach who made that call has to live in the boathouse afterward. A director hiring a coach is hiring a selection process, whether or not the posting says so. Write the process down and you are ahead of nearly every other file.

How to write a rowing coach resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, selection and boating block, coaching experience, certifications, and skills. One page for your first few seasons, two once you have run a squad through full selection cycles. The order is deliberate: a director reads for two things in the first ten seconds, whether you are currently certified and insurable, and whether you have ever been responsible for a lineup.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. School districts, universities and larger clubs all parse applications into a system first.

Choosing the best resume format for a rowing coach resume

Reverse chronological, single column. Rowing is a seasonal sport with two distinct racing calendars, and a director is checking whether you have completed whole cycles rather than partial ones.

Do not use a functional format. Coaching work is often layered: you assist a varsity squad in the spring, run a learn-to-row program in the summer, take masters in the autumn. Write those as concurrent roles with real dates. A coach who has run a summer program and a school season in the same year is showing the range a small program needs.

Include your contact information

Put the certification level and the currency of your screening in the header. USRowing requires SafeSport training to be renewed every year for a coach to stay in good standing, and accepts only background checks conducted by NCSI as of 1 August 2024 (usrowing.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). A director who has to chase you for these hires someone else.

How you picked the boat, and how you documented it

Selection is the job. Everything else is training a group of people so that the selection has something to choose between. Almost no rowing coach writes this down, and it is the thing a director most wants to know, because a selection dispute is how a program loses a season. Write the process as a short protocol: the tools you use, the order you use them in, and the record you keep.

Weight adjustment is worth explaining precisely, because it is where a resume shows technical literacy in one sentence. Concept2 publishes a weight adjustment calculator that exists because the erg does not penalize extra body weight the way water does, so a heavier rower may appear to have a higher potential than they really have. Its published formula is a weight factor of body weight in pounds divided by 270, raised to the power of 0.222, with the corrected time being that factor multiplied by the actual time (concept2.com, retrieved 17 September 2026). If you use weight-adjusted scores, say so and say which adjustment, because a squad list of raw times and one of adjusted times can rank differently.

Seat racing is the second half, and the resume should say how much of it you ran rather than that you ran some. A matrix with named rounds, a fixed number of pieces and a rule for what margin counts as a result is a protocol. Two swaps on a windy Thursday is an anecdote. Then the record, which is the part that protects the program.

The written record turns a subjective call into a defensible one. It is also what lets a rower see why they were moved, which is the difference between an athlete who trains harder in March and one who stops coming. Say in one line that the record exists, who can read it, and how fast it is updated.

List your education and certifications

Certification first, because USRowing has set a clear floor and directors check it. USRowing requires coaches to hold Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 certification, and required all coaches to be Level 1 certified or higher from 1 January 2025. Alongside the certification itself, a coach in good standing must keep SafeSport training current, renewed every year; a background check compliant with United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee guidelines, which since 1 August 2024 must be conducted by NCSI; first aid and adult CPR and AED certification with a valid expiration date; and an unexpired state-required boating safety license where one applies. Continuing education credits are required annually: three or more for Level 1, and six or more for Level 2 and Level 3 (usrowing.org, retrieved 17 September 2026).

The Level 1 course is entirely online and self-paced, open to candidates aged 16 and over, and completing the coursework alone does not certify you; you must pass the Level 1 exam (usrowing.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). Say on your resume that you passed it, not that you took the course.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph and no boat graphics. School and university applicant systems parse the file before a human reads it, and decorative headers are where that breaks.

Keep the selection and boating block as labeled lines rather than a table when you submit through a portal, since tables often do not survive parsing. Label them plainly: Selection protocol, Seat racing, Erg testing, The record, Outcome.

Rowing coaching sits inside the coaches and scouts occupation; BLS publishes no separate federal profile for rowing.

Where coaches work shapes how rowing jobs are advertised. Educational services, covering state, local and private schools and universities, employ 64 percent of coaches and scouts; arts, entertainment and recreation employ 22 percent, where most club and community boathouse posts sit; and 8 percent are self-employed (BLS, May 2025).

What salary you can expect as a rowing coach

The median annual wage for coaches and scouts was $47,320 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $28,790 and the highest 10 percent more than $98,860 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026). BLS does not publish an hourly median on that page.

Industry moves the figure more than the sport does. Coaches in arts, entertainment and recreation had a median of $48,440 in May 2025, educational services $46,890, religious, grantmaking, civic and professional organizations $43,870, and local government excluding education $38,730 (BLS, May 2025).

Rowing has a structural feature worth planning around: many scholastic and club posts are stipend or seasonal rather than salaried, and a full-time living is often assembled from a school season, a summer learn-to-row program and a masters squad. Write all three with real dates rather than compressing them, because a director filling a full-time post wants someone who has already carried that load.

What a resume moves here is the size of program you are trusted with. Directors hand a larger squad, more shells and assistant coaches to the applicant whose selection process they can adopt without rewriting it.
