Lead with selection, not with results
Every rowing coach applying has results, and every director knows results depend on the water, the shells and who else raced that region.
What separates a file is method: "I run weight-adjusted 2,000 meter erg tests in weeks 1, 7 and 12, three seat-racing rounds of four pieces on a fixed matrix, and I log every boating decision within 48 hours so any athlete can ask why." That is portable. It works on their river, with their equipment, next season.
Then close the loop with retention: how many athletes you did not boat came back the following year. That number is the proof the method held.

Coaching hiring runs on openings, not growth

Educational services employ 64 percent of coaches and scouts and arts, entertainment and recreation 22 percent, where most club and boathouse posts sit. The May 2025 median was $47,320, with the lowest 10 percent under $28,790 and the highest over $98,860 (BLS, May 2025).

The certification lines the letter has to clear
Do
- State your USRowing certification level and that you passed the exam, not just that you took the course.
- Say that SafeSport is current, that your background check is with NCSI, and that your first aid, adult CPR and AED and state boating safety certificate are unexpired.
- Mention that your continuing education credits are complete for the year.
- Name one real thing about their program taken from their own pages.
Don’t
- Do not claim a certification level you have not been awarded; USRowing status is checkable and a director will check it.
- Do not describe selection as based on commitment and attitude without saying how you measured either.
- Do not name an athlete or quote an individual erg score in a letter.
- Do not open with your own rowing career; a director is hiring the coach, not the former oarsman.
USRowing requires coaches to hold Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 certification and required all coaches to be Level 1 certified or higher from 1 January 2025, with SafeSport renewed every year, a background check conducted by NCSI since 1 August 2024, first aid and adult CPR and AED with a valid expiration date, an unexpired state boating safety license where one applies, and annual continuing education credits of three or more for Level 1 and six or more for Levels 2 and 3 (usrowing.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). Covering that in two sentences saves a director an email.
