Name the event groups and the entry limit in the first paragraph
A director filling a track staff is looking at six event groups and two or three adults. A letter that says "experienced track and field coach" leaves them still counting.
Write it as coverage: "I coach sprints and hurdles directly, have run relay pools for four seasons, and can cover jumps if the staff needs it." That is a schedule, not a claim.
Then show you know the constraint the lineup sits inside. NFHS rules state that "A competitor shall not compete in more than four events, including relays", while "State associations may adopt different participation limitations, not to exceed six events" (NFHS, as published by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, khsaa.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). Say which limit your state uses, and that you write entries against it yourself.

I am applying for the Head Track and Field Coach post at Cascade Meridian High School. I coach sprints and hurdles directly, cover distance, jumps and throws through assistants, and I write every meet entry myself against our state four event cap with preliminaries counted.
The work I would bring is the lineup side rather than any one event. When I took over at Cottonwood Bend we had strong individual athletes and a weak team score, because our best people were entered in their best events and nothing else was covered. I rebuilt the relay pools so 19 athletes rotate through two squads, held distance runners out of the 4x400 in championship weeks, and spread entries for depth instead of headline results. At districts in 2025 six of our athletes finished fourth to sixth for 22 points a top-heavy lineup would never have collected, and the team score went from 78 to 141 across four seasons.
I read that Cascade Meridian has added a throws circle and is hosting the district meet next spring. Throws depth is the hardest group to build and the one that most often decides a district, so I would start there. I have directed a nine school invitational with 640 entries on Hy-Tek, so I can take the meet as well as the team.
I hold USATF Level 1, am SafeSport current, and my first aid and CPR run through January 2028. I also hold an Oregon license in health and physical education if a teaching line is attached. Thank you for your time.

Say which meet a points figure came from, because championship scoring runs deeper than dual scoring and each state sets its tables locally. New Mexico scores its state championship 7-5-4-3-2-1 in individual events and 10-8-6-4-2-1 in relays (NMAA, nmact.org, retrieved 17 September 2026); Iowa scores qualifying meets 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 in both (IHSAA, iahsaa.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). The largest participation sport, coached by very few adults
Outdoor track and field drew 1,158,043 high school participants in 2024 to 2025, 644,235 boys and 513,808 girls, and was again the most popular sport for girls (National Federation of State High School Associations, nfhs.org, retrieved 17 September 2026).
Coaches and scouts, the occupation BLS counts track coaches within, showed 298,800 jobs in 2025, a projected 6 percent change through 2035, about 36,400 annual openings and a May 2025 median wage of $47,320, with educational services accounting for 64 percent of employment (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Coaches and Scouts, 27 August 2026).

Should I write about athletes I have coached?
Write groups and points, never individuals. "Six athletes finished fourth to sixth at districts for 22 points" says more about your coaching than one athlete's time, and identifies nobody. Never attach a mark or a placing to a named student.
What if I have only coached one event group?
Say so plainly and lead with what that group scored; a director filling an assistant post is looking for exactly that. Then name any group you have covered informally or would take, because coverage is the constraint they work under.
Do I need a coaching certification to apply?
For most high school posts a district insists on SafeSport, a background screen and current CPR and first aid. It belongs there because it is the constraint the job is built inside.
