A lifeguard cover letter names your certification and its expiry date, the water you have guarded, the months you are available, and one number from your own record. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, what changes between a first season and a head guard application, and the openings that get a file moved to the interview pile.

Application for Head Lifeguard, Windward Shoals Aquatic Center

Dear Ms. Zelenka,

I am applying for the Head Lifeguard post at Windward Shoals Aquatic Center. My American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certification is valid through April 2028 and includes Waterpark Skills, I hold Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification, and I am available from the first week of May through the end of September.

For the last two seasons I have run stand rotation and in-service training at Pelican Cove Waterpark, a 14 acre park with a wave pool, a 1,100 foot lazy river and four slide catch pools at a peak weekend load of 2,400. I rebuilt the rotation so that no guard scans a single zone for longer than 20 minutes, and our surprise drill pass rate went from 68 percent to 94 percent across those two seasons. I also started reviewing every logged preventive action with the guard who made it, which took the season total from 148 to 312, not because more was happening in the water but because guards stopped treating a prevention as too small to write down.

Windward Shoals runs a year round program with a competition pool and a summer waterfront, which is the combination I want to work in next, and I noticed you added a morning lesson block this spring. As a Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor I can certify your seasonal intake in house rather than sending them out, and I would be glad to take lesson blocks alongside guarding.

My instructor certification is current, my emergency oxygen training was renewed in this year's in-service cycle, and I can start as soon as your spring training week. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,Dashiell Pankratz

A lifeguard cover letter is a one page letter telling an aquatics supervisor when your certification expires, what water you have guarded, which months you can work, and one thing from your record that shows you can scan.

In practice, aquatics hiring happens in a compressed window against a rotation the facility has to staff before the pool opens. As a result, a letter written for that reality stands out on its own.

Put the expiry date and the months in the first paragraph

The American Red Cross states that its Lifeguarding course awards a Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certification "which is valid for two years and accepted nationwide" (American Red Cross, redcross.org, retrieved 17 September 2026), and the Red Cross also lists separate options for shallow water, aquatic attractions, waterparks and waterfronts.

One sentence can therefore answer two of the supervisor's first three questions: which water you are cleared for, and whether your card covers the whole season.

"My American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certification is valid through March 2028 and includes Waterfront Skills, and I am available from the third week of May through Labor Day." Almost nobody writes that sentence, and it is the sentence that gets a file moved.

What counts as evidence when you have never made a rescue

Most lifeguards, including good ones, go whole seasons without a rescue. That is the point of the job, so the evidence lives elsewhere.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence

  • Preventive recordLogged 46 preventive actions across a season with no submersion incident in my zone
  • DrillsPassed 9 of 9 surprise response drills in the 2025 season
  • In-serviceCompleted 24 hours of in-service training against a 12 hour requirement
  • Water coveredCovered a three stand rotation on a 25 yard pool with a 12 foot diving well
  • DocumentationWrote the incident reports the county inspector reviewed at two inspections
  • TeachingCertified 11 new guards as a Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor
  • ReturningThird season at the same facility, promoted to shift lead in the second

First season, head guard and supervisor letters

Do

  • Lead with the certification, the water it covers and the expiry date.
  • Say the months and the days you can work, including whether you can stay past the school holidays.
  • Give the facility's shape: dimensions, depth, features, peak load.
  • Use preventive counts and drill results as your evidence.
  • Name one real thing about their facility, taken from their own pages.
  • If you are going for head guard, say how many guards you have scheduled and trained.

Don’t

  • Do not open with a rescue story.
  • Do not describe an individual swimmer, their age or what happened to them; write the work and the group instead.
  • Do not claim a certification that expires mid season without saying when you are renewing.
  • Do not send a letter with no facility name in it.
  • Do not write "safety is my top priority", which is in every file in the folder.

Availability is a qualification in this occupation

BLS puts this occupation at 162,000 jobs in 2025, projects 5 percent growth to 2035, and projects about 45,400 openings a year (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections, published 27 August 2026). That is roughly 28 openings a year for every 100 jobs, almost none of it growth.

BLS also notes that part-time work is common and the jobs are often seasonal, and the median wage is published as $16.14 an hour, $33,580 a year (BLS, May 2025).

Read together, those numbers say the supervisor's hardest problem is not finding someone who can swim. It is covering the shoulder weeks, in late May and in September, when student guards are not available. A letter that says plainly which weeks you can work answers the question the whole market turns on.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 375 words. PDF unless the portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the post: dashiell-pankratz-head-lifeguard-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person. In addition, a city parks page usually names aquatics supervisors and recreation coordinators, and "Dear Hiring Manager" on an otherwise specific file reads as a letter sent to nine facilities.

Use the same certification dates and numbers as your resume so the two agree. Our lifeguard resume example is written with the figures used here.

Key takeaways

  1. First, name your certification, the water it covers and its expiry date in the first paragraph.
  2. Say which months and which days you can work, including the shoulder weeks.
  3. Then describe the facility you guarded: dimensions, depth, features, peak load.
  4. Also, use preventive counts, drill results and in-service hours as your evidence.
  5. In addition, say what you would take on beyond the stand: lessons, in-service, certification.
  6. Name one real thing about their facility, taken from their own pages.
  7. Finally, address a named person and keep it to one page.

Lifeguard cover letter questions, answered

How long should a lifeguard cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 375 words. Supervisors read these in batches during a short hiring window, and length does not read as effort.

Do I need a cover letter if the parks application is a portal?

Attach one wherever there is a field for it. The portal collects the same structured data from everyone. The letter is the only place to state your availability by week, the water you are cleared for, and what you would take on beyond guarding.

What do I write with no lifeguarding experience yet?

Write the certification with its issue and expiry dates, the swim test you passed, your availability, and one job or activity where you held attention and dealt with the public. The Red Cross states that certification requires passing the final skills assessments and scoring a minimum of 80 percent on a 50 question written exam (redcross.org, retrieved 17 September 2026), so say you did. Then say you will be there for the whole season.

Should I mention a rescue I made?

Only if it is relevant, only in one flat sentence, and never with identifying detail about the swimmer. A supervisor reads a preventive count and a drill result as stronger evidence of scanning, and a letter built around one incident can read as a letter with nothing else in it.

How do I write to a facility I have not seen?

Read their pages for ten minutes first: the pool schedule, the lesson program, the season dates and any recent renovation notice. One accurate sentence about the water they actually operate beats a paragraph about your commitment to safety, and it cannot be copied into the next letter.
