A track coach resume is a one to two page document showing that you can score a meet: which event groups you cover, how many events an athlete may enter, how you assemble a lineup inside that limit, and what the lineup scored.

That is the job, and it is the part almost every applicant leaves off. Track is not a sport where a team is fielded and a game is played. It is eighteen or so separate competitions run on one afternoon, in which every athlete has a hard cap on entries, every place finish is worth fixed points, and the team result is arithmetic done days in advance by whoever writes the entries. An athletic director hiring a head coach is hiring the person who does that arithmetic.

How to write a track coach resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, event group coverage, coaching experience, lineup and results, and education with certifications and clearances. One page as an assistant, two once you have run a full program across several seasons.

Event group coverage sits high because it is what an athletic director shortlists on. A high school program needs sprints, hurdles, distance, jumps, throws and relays covered by two or three adults, so a coach who can take two of those groups competently beats a longer career in one.

Choosing the best resume format for a track coach resume

Reverse chronological. One page as an assistant, two once you have run a program with results worth citing.

Functional formats fail because a track program is read as a timeline of seasons: which school, which squad size, which event groups, which years. Hiding that sequence reads as hiding a season that went badly, and directors call the previous school anyway.

If you also teach, keep the teaching on the page. Most high school coaching posts are attached to a teaching contract or a supplemental stipend, and the subject you can be scheduled for often decides between two coaches.

Include your contact information

Put the event groups in the header line. It is the most useful thing on the page for the person reading it, and almost nobody does it.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: level and squad size, the event groups you coach, the lineup work you do, and one scoring result with the meet named.

The meet is a scoring problem: entry limits, event groups and the lineup you built

A track meet is scored by place. An athlete who is your best 400 runner is probably your best 200 runner and a leg of two relays, and cannot do all of it. Every entry you write spends a limited resource. The coach who understands that is building a lineup; the coach who does not enters their fastest athletes in their best events and loses the meet by eight points to a team with less talent. Write the section in four parts.

The limit you work under. Name the association and the rule. Under NFHS track and field rules, "A competitor shall not compete in more than four events, including relays", while "State associations may adopt different participation limitations, not to exceed six events" (NFHS, via khsaa.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). Iowa sets four and counts preliminaries as an event (IHSAA, iahsaa.org, retrieved 17 September 2026); New Mexico allows five, no more than four on the track and no more than four in the field (NMAA, nmact.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). Do not present any of these as a national rule.

The coverage you can field. Six event groups: sprints, hurdles, distance, jumps, throws and relays. Say which you coach yourself and which you cover by scheduling an assistant. A program that scores in throws is rarer than one that scores in sprints, and directors know it.

How you built the lineup. This is the part nobody writes and the part that shows judgment: whether you protected a distance athlete from a relay leg, how you seeded across heats, how you spread entries so a sixth place in three events outscored a first in one, and what you did when your best athlete was unavailable.

What it scored. Points, by meet type. Championship scoring runs deeper than dual scoring, so say which you are quoting. Depth is set locally too: New Mexico scores its state championship 7-5-4-3-2-1 in individual events and 10-8-6-4-2-1 in relays (NMAA, nmact.org, retrieved 17 September 2026), while Iowa scores qualifying meets 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 in both (IHSAA, iahsaa.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). Points quoted without the table behind them say little.

Entry rules worked under: state four event cap including relays, preliminaries counted as an event. Entries written personally for all 11 regular season meets plus district.
Event group coverage: sprints and hurdles coached directly; distance, jumps and throws covered by assistants; relay pools built and managed by me. All six groups scored at each of the last four district championships.
Lineup construction: relay pools of 19 athletes across two squads so no athlete exceeded the cap in a weekend double; distance athletes held out of the 4x400 in championship weeks; entries spread for depth, with 6 athletes scoring in the 4th to 6th places at districts in 2025 for 22 points that a top-heavy lineup would not have collected.
Results: district team score 78 to 141 points across four seasons. 14 individual entries and 3 relays qualified to the state championship in that period. No athlete scratched for an entry error.

That last line matters. An athlete scratched because a coach entered them in a fifth event is a preventable failure most athletic directors have seen at least once, and saying it never happened on your watch is a real claim.

List your education and certifications

Certifications and clearances first, because they gate access to a school site. State the authority for each.

USATF publishes the requirements for its entry level credential plainly: a candidate "must be 18 years or older" and "must be a current USATF member", Level 1 is a "22-hour blended learning program", and its online exam requires "a passing score of 80% or higher" with "30 days and two attempts". Coaches seeking the Registered Coaches Program must also "maintain USATF 3-Step SafeSport Compliance requirements to remain active on the SafeSport Compliant and Coaches Registry lists" (USA Track and Field, usatf.org, retrieved 17 September 2026). Write the level, the year and your SafeSport status, because a school cannot put you on a field without the second.

BLS adds that "Certification often requires that coaches be at least 18 years old and be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid", and that public high school coaches may need to be certified or complete mandatory education courses (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Coaches and Scouts, 27 August 2026).

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no team logo. District portals parse the file into a structured record before a director reads it, and two-column layouts and graphics are where that breaks.

Track coach job market and outlook

Track coaches are counted by BLS within coaches and scouts, a large occupation whose employment sits mostly in schools.

What salary you can expect as a track coach

The median annual wage for coaches and scouts was $47,320 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $28,790 and the highest 10 percent above $98,860 (BLS, May 2025).

That range hides a structural fact specific to high school track. Most posts are supplemental: a stipend set by a district schedule and paid on top of a teaching salary, not a standalone job. The stipend is fixed by title, head or assistant, so it is not negotiated. What is negotiable is which post you are offered and whether a teaching line comes with it.

So a track resume should carry both halves. Event group coverage and lineup evidence decide whether you are offered head coach rather than assistant, which is the stipend difference. The teaching license decides whether the district can attach a contract to it, which is the rest of the money. A resume showing only one is asking for half an offer.
