A football coach resume is a one to two page document that names the teams you have coached, the record you built, and the program you are responsible for when nobody is on the field: the safety protocol, the eligibility monitoring, the equipment, and the staff.

That last part is where most applicants lose the job. First of all, an athletic director is not hiring a playcaller. Instead, they are handing over a hundred teenagers, a building full of helmets, a practice calendar governed by their state association, and paid and volunteer assistants who report to somebody. That is why the resume that shows you can run that beats the one that lists a record.

How to write a football coach resume

To start, plan seven sections: contact header, summary, coaching experience, the program administration block, teaching or campus role, certifications, and education. Keep one page as an assistant, then two once you have run a program.

The order matters because of who reads it. In a school setting, however, the file passes through an athletic director and a principal, who ask different questions. The athletic director wants the program. The principal wants to know what else you can be scheduled for, because in most districts the coaching post is a stipend attached to a teaching or campus assignment rather than a standalone job.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit. District applications go into a system, and the system filters them before a human opens them.

Choosing the best resume format for a football coach resume

Reverse chronological. In other words, one page as an assistant, two once you have been a coordinator or head coach with a program to describe.

Functional layouts fail badly here. Athletic directors read coaching for progression: which level, which position group, which coordinator role, how long you stayed, and whether the program was better when you left. After all, a format that hides the sequence reads as a sequence worth hiding.

Therefore, keep every coaching role attached to its season years, and keep your teaching or campus assignment as a separate dated entry. Blending them into one line is the most common formatting error on these files, and it hides what the principal can actually schedule.

Also, put the teaching certificate and its grade band on the page. In a district hire, human resources verifies it before the athletic director calls, and the file that lets them do it in five seconds moves first.

Make use of a summary

Next, write four lines: level and role, years, one program outcome, and one administrative fact that shows you run the part nobody sees.

As a result, the right column describes a program an athletic director could hand over on Monday. By contrast, the left describes a feeling, and every file in the folder has the same one.

Outline your coaching experience

School, district, classification, team, position group and season years, then three to five bullets. Additionally, in experience, each bullet carries a number: roster size, staff supervised, a rate or a record.

The program you run off the field: safety protocol, eligibility and staff

This is the block almost nobody includes, and it is the one an athletic director is actually reading for.

In practice, a football coach on a school campus is a middle manager with a payroll, a calendar governed by an outside body, a building full of safety equipment and a legal exposure that belongs to the district. Yet a record and a coaching philosophy answer none of it. Write six things.

Heat acclimatization and practice structure. State associations set their own acclimatization periods, practice length limits and rules on contact in practice, and they differ significantly from state to state. Do not write a national rule. Write what your association required, what you built to meet it, and what it produced: the phasing of helmets and pads, practice times, hydration and cooling arrangements, and your record of heat-related removals.

Concussion removal and return to play. The CDC's HEADS UP guidance says an athlete showing signs or symptoms after a head injury should be removed from sports participation "right away", kept out "the same day of the injury and until cleared by a healthcare provider", and states that "an athlete should only return to sports practices with the approval and under the supervision of their healthcare provider" (CDC, cdc.gov, retrieved 17 September 2026). The CDC publishes a six step return to play progression running from regular activities through light aerobic, moderate and heavy non-contact activity to full contact practice and competition. Say who makes the removal call on your sideline, who documents it, and how the progression is tracked back to the athletic trainer and the clearing provider.

Football coach eligibility, equipment and staff

Eligibility and academic monitoring. This is what most often separates two otherwise equal candidates, because it is the item the principal cares about. Write the mechanism: how often grades are checked, who checks them, what happens the day an athlete falls below the bar, and what the rate did while you ran it.

Equipment fitting, reconditioning and inventory. Helmets and shoulder pads are fitted, inspected, reconditioned on a cycle and audited, and somebody owns that paperwork and its deadline. If it is you, say the number of sets, the cycle and when the paperwork is filed.

Staff you supervise. Paid assistants, volunteer coaches, student managers and equipment staff. Give the counts separately, and say whether you are the one keeping their certifications current, because volunteer coaches are where a certification lapse usually hides.

Volunteer and parent coordination. Booster organization, travel, meals, fundraising and the communication channel families actually read. Athletic directors know how much of their week this consumes, and a coach who has run it is a coach who will not hand it back.

List your education and certifications

Certifications with their years first, then your teaching certificate, then degrees. Especially for certifications, an athletic director scans this block for currency, not prestige.

Choose the right layout and design

Lastly, use a single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no team logos. District portals parse the file into a structured record before anyone reads it, and two columns, image headers and decorative banners are where that parsing breaks.

Resist the scoreboard layout. Similarly, a column of season records tells an athletic director nothing they cannot find themselves, so spend the space on the program block, which they cannot find anywhere.

Football coach job market and outlook

A growing occupation concentrated in schools, in which many posts are part-time or stipend roles attached to another job.

Football coaches do not have a Handbook profile of their own. They are published inside coaches and scouts, so every figure here covers that whole occupation, from youth club coaches to professional scouts. The OOH notes that certification often requires coaches to be at least 18 and trained in CPR and first aid, and that part-time work is common with irregular hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.

What salary you can expect as a football coach

For reference, the median annual wage for coaches and scouts was $47,320 as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,790 and the highest 10 percent more than $98,860 (BLS, May 2025).

That is a wide spread for one occupation, and it is honest to say why. Meanwhile, the bottom is part-time and seasonal coaching, which BLS notes is common here. The top is a small number of full-time posts, mostly at large schools and at college and professional level.

Also, school football pay usually arrives in two pieces that a salary table cannot show: the teaching or campus salary, which follows a district schedule, and the coaching stipend, which varies by role. For example, a head football coach stipend is normally the largest in a district, and coordinator and position-coach stipends step down from it. In addition, in many districts a campus athletic coordinator role carries an additional amount again.

So make every role you could be paid for visible. A candidate who can be head football coach, teach two sections of a shortage subject and take a spring sport is paid from three lines of the same budget and is a cheaper hire than three people. Write the teaching certificate, the second sport and any strength and conditioning role explicitly.
