Summary

A police officer resume is a one to two page document naming the state commission that certified you, the status of that certificate, and the assignments you have actually worked. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the difference between a lateral file and an entry file, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay, openings and outlook for the occupation.

Police Officer resume examples by experience level

A police officer resume is a one to two page document that names the state commission that certified you, the current status of that certificate, and the assignments you have actually stood.

In short, which of those two files you are writing changes almost everything on the page. On one hand, an entry applicant is asking an agency to put them through an academy. On the other hand, a lateral is asking an agency to skip one. As a result, the reader, the timeline and the risk are different, and a file that does not say which of the two it is gets read as the weaker one.

Resume guide for a police officer resume

To that end, this guide and the corresponding police officer resume example will cover:

  • To begin with, how to write a police officer resume, section by section
  • How state POST certification works and when it travels across a state line
  • Then, three adaptable summaries: entry applicant, patrol officer and supervisor
  • Also, what a lateral file must show that an entry file does not
  • Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a police officer resume

Overall, six sections: contact header, summary, certification, assignment history, training, and education. Generally, one page as an entry applicant, two once you have a specialist assignment or a stripe.

Certification comes before experience because it is a gate rather than an achievement. A hiring sergeant sorting a stack of applications is separating them into two piles before reading a word of prose, and the certificate line is what decides which pile you land in.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
CertificationIs this a lateral or an entry file?Directly under the summary, with the commission named
Assignment historyWhat has this person actually worked?Reverse chronological, assignment by assignment
TrainingWhat has the agency already paid to teach them? Its own block, with hours and the provider
EducationDoes this clear the agency's stated minimum?Short, and only if it clears or exceeds the bar
Expert Tip

Write your certification the way your commission writes it

Every state runs its own Peace Officer Standards and Training commission, and each one uses its own vocabulary: certificate, license, registration, basic, intermediate, advanced. There is no national standard, so "POST certified" on its own tells a reader almost nothing.

Give four things: the commission, the level, the number, and the status with a date. "Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, certified peace officer, #AZ-24118, active" is a line a background unit can verify in one call.

If you hold certificates from more than one state, list them both with their status, because a lapsed certificate from a prior state is still evidence of a completed academy, and the reader will want to know it exists before they find it themselves.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you apply. Most municipal and county agencies now take applications through a portal that parses the file into a structured record.

Choosing the best resume format for a police officer resume

Above all, reverse chronological, with no gaps and months on every date. In other words, one page as an entry applicant, two once you have a specialist assignment, a lateral move or a supervisory rank.

However, functional and skills-based formats are the wrong tool here. After all, law enforcement hiring is built on a continuous, verifiable timeline, and any layout that reorders your history around themes reads as a history someone wanted reordered. Therefore, keep it chronological and let the assignments carry the interest.

Also, leave your badge number off the header. It identifies a serving officer publicly, it means nothing to an agency in another state, and the certificate number is the identifier a background unit actually uses.

Make use of a summary

In effect, four lines: certification and its status, years and agency size, your current assignment, and one number that shows volume or outcome.

Entry applicant adaptable resume summary example

Patrol officer adaptable resume summary example

Arizona POST certified peace officer with six years of patrol experience in a 1,000-officer agency, currently a field training officer on a swing shift covering a sector of 92,000 residents. Averaged 1,340 calls for service a year across three years, with 210 reports filed in the last twelve months and 4 returned for correction. Previously licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and transferred to Arizona through the state waiver process.

Patrol supervisor adaptable resume summary example

Police sergeant with 14 years of service, 5 of them supervising a 9-officer patrol squad across a sector of 92,000 residents. Hold an Arizona POST advanced certificate and a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice, and served three years as a field training officer before promotion. Rebuilt the squad's report review process, which took returned reports from 11 percent to 3 percent of submissions over two years.

Right vs wrong: the same police officer summary, twice

The right column answers the two questions a hiring sergeant has: can this person be sworn in without an academy, and what have they actually been doing.

Outline your employment history

Then give the assignment, agency, city, dates with months, and the agency's sworn strength in brackets. Then three to five bullets, each naming a call type, a caseload or a collateral duty, and carrying a number.

Serve as a Spanish-language interviewer for the division, averaging 90 interviews a year without an interpreter.

State POST certification, and whether you are a lateral or an entry applicant

There is no national police certification. Each state runs its own Peace Officer Standards and Training commission with its own academy hours, its own testing and its own rules for recognizing an outside certificate, so a file that works in one state can be the wrong shape in the next one.

Consequently, that leaves two genuinely different documents, and the first job of your page is to declare which one it is.

The entry file is asking an agency to invest an academy in you. It is read for coachability, for the minimum standards, and for anything that shortens the academy: a relevant degree, military police or corrections service, a second language, dispatch experience, an EMT card. BLS notes that candidates usually must be at least 21 years old, must meet rigorous physical and personal qualifications, and usually attend a training academy before becoming an officer, with education requirements ranging from a high school diploma to a college degree (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Police and Detectives, last modified 27 August 2026).

What a lateral police officer file must show

The lateral file is asking an agency to skip the academy. It is read for one thing above everything else: whether your certificate can be converted, and how quickly. The reader is not scoring your potential; they are estimating a date.

Breaks in service and state POST rules

The break in service is the line most laterals leave out, and it is frequently the deciding fact. California is a worked example. Its Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training runs a Basic Course Waiver for out-of-state officers, and the published minimum eligibility is specific: at least a 400-hour general law enforcement basic course, at least 680 hours of general law enforcement training including that basic course, at least two years of continuous general law enforcement experience with one agency, and no more than a six-year break from the applicant's last peace officer employment before the date of application. Applicants who clear the training evaluation then complete a 161-hour requalification course in person in California, and the resulting waiver is valid for three years (California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, accessed September 2026).

In particular, two details in that process decide files. Corrections-only deputies, certain federal police and military police are currently ineligible for that waiver, so a candidate whose sworn time was in a jail rather than on a road may not transfer at all (California POST, accessed September 2026). Moreover, the hour counts are exactly the numbers most resumes omit. If your academy was 720 hours, write 720 hours.

How other states certify police officers

Arizona works differently again, which is the point. The Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board certifies officers who complete an Arizona law enforcement academy and its comprehensive final examination under rule R13-4-110, and every candidate passes a comprehensive polygraph examination. Out-of-state certified officers may go through a waiver testing process instead of a full academy, but only after an Arizona agency has appointed them, and the board notes that securing an appointment does not automatically translate into being qualified for certification (Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, accessed September 2026).

So write the certification block as a record, not as a claim.

Adaptable resume certification block example

Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, certified peace officer, #AZ-24118, active, issued March 2016. Advanced certificate awarded 2024.

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, basic peace officer license, #TX-778104, inactive since March 2016, held continuously from 2013.

Academy: Basic Peace Officer Course, 728 hours, El Paso Police Department Training Academy, 2013. Arizona waiver testing process completed February 2016.

Continuing training: 88 hours in the last two years, including 24 hours of state-mandated subjects, 16 hours of supervision, and 8 hours of interview and interrogation.

In fact, that block answers a portability question in five lines. Without it, however, the same officer's file forces a background unit to make three phone calls before anyone can decide whether to interview.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Ten to fourteen entries in three groups, and every one of them something an agency assigns rather than something a person feels.

Adaptable resume skills example

Patrol and response: Calls for service and sector coverage, Traffic and DUI enforcement, Crisis intervention, Use-of-force reporting, Scene management

Investigation and documentation: Report writing and review, Interview in English and Spanish, Evidence collection and chain of custody, Case filing with the county attorney, Body-worn camera audit

Supervision and systems: Squad supervision and scheduling, Field training and probation evaluation, Records management systems, Computer-aided dispatch, Early intervention documentation

List your education, certification and training

Certification first with the commission and status, then the academy with its hours, then continuing training, then degrees.

Training hours belong on the page because they are the currency of a lateral evaluation. For example, an agency deciding whether to waive an academy compares your hours against a statutory minimum, and a resume that says "completed academy" instead of "728 hours" makes them ask.

Adaptable resume education and training example

Bachelor of Science, Criminal Justice, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, 2020

Associate of Applied Science, Criminal Justice, El Paso Community College, El Paso, TX, 2012

Specialist training: Field Training Officer Course, 40 hours (2019). Crisis Intervention Team, 40 hours (2021). First Line Supervision, 80 hours (2021). Interview and Interrogation, 24 hours (2023). Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, 24 hours (2015).

Certifications: AZ POST certified peace officer #AZ-24118, active. TCOLE basic peace officer license #TX-778104, inactive. First aid, CPR and AED, American Red Cross (2026).

Choose the right layout and design

In general, single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph and no agency badge artwork. Agency portals parse the file into a structured record before a human sees it, and two columns, text boxes and graphics are where that parsing breaks.

Do

Name the commission, the certificate number, the level and the status with a date. Say in the first line whether you are applying as a lateral or an entry candidate. Give your academy hours as a number. Put months on every date and leave no unexplained gap. List a lapsed out-of-state certificate as well as a current one. Write assignments by assignment, with call volumes and report counts.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "POST certified" without naming the state commission. Do not put a badge number or a serving officer's photograph on the page. Do not describe a specific incident, a named subject or an open case. Do not claim a certificate level you have not been awarded; a commission's records are the first thing checked. Do not use a two-column template for an agency portal.

Police officer job market and outlook

A large occupation growing at about the rate of the economy, with replacement demand doing most of the hiring, and a hiring cycle that has turned upward in the last two years.

Statistical insight

Agencies are hiring harder than they were, and retiring faster too

A national survey of 197 agencies from 39 states, the District of Columbia and two Canadian provinces, together employing more than 138,000 sworn officers, found that total staffing rose 1.4 percent in 2025, bringing officer numbers back to where they stood in 2022. Respondents hired 17.6 percent more officers in 2025 than in 2024 and 40 percent more than in 2021, while resignations were essentially flat at 0.5 percent higher than the previous year and retirements rose 16.4 percent (Police Executive Research Forum, published 23 May 2026).

Read those four numbers together. Agencies are recruiting far harder than they were, they are still losing people at the top of the seniority curve, and the gap is being filled at the bottom and by lateral transfer.

That is why a portable certificate is worth writing carefully. An agency replacing a retiring 25-year officer wants somebody on a road in months, not a year, and the file that lets them estimate that date is the file that gets called first.

Where the jobs sit:

Setting or roleMedian annual wage, May 2025
Detectives and criminal investigators$93,790
Transit and railroad police$90,230
Police and sheriff's patrol officers$76,210
Fish and game wardens$74,060

Educational services (3% of employment)$62,310

What salary you can expect as a police officer

Specifically, the median annual wage for police and detectives was $77,310 as of May 2025, or $37.17 an hour (BLS, May 2025). Meanwhile, police and sheriff's patrol officers specifically sat at $76,210, while detectives and criminal investigators reached $93,790.

Almost all of that spread is a published pay step schedule rather than a negotiation. Moreover, where a resume moves money is in three places: the step you are hired at, the specialist assignments that carry a differential, and the certificate level that some states and agencies attach a pay incentive to.

Above all, the step is the one a lateral file directly controls. Agencies that hire laterals usually place them somewhere on the existing scale according to verified prior service, and verified means documented: agency, sworn dates with months, certificate number and status. For instance, an officer with eight years of service whose file only proves six is paid for six.

Assignment differentials are the second lever, and they belong in the assignment history rather than in a skills list. Similarly, field training officer, K9, motors, detective, crisis intervention team and bilingual assignments carry a premium at many agencies, and the resume's job is to show you have held them, with dates.

Key takeaways for a police officer resume

  1. Say in the first line whether you are a lateral or an entry applicant.
  2. Name the commission, the certificate number, the level and the status with a date.
  3. Write the academy hours as a number, because an evaluator compares them to a minimum.
  4. Give your break in service, since portability rules turn on it.
  5. List a lapsed out-of-state certificate as well as a current one.
  6. Firstly, write the assignment history assignment by assignment, with call and report volumes.
  7. Secondly, keep months on every date and leave no unexplained gap in the timeline.

Police officer resume questions, answered

How long should a police officer resume be?

One page as an entry applicant. Two once you have a lateral certificate to document, a specialist assignment history or a supervisory rank. The second page is usually the training block, which earns its space because an evaluator reads it against a statutory minimum.

Does my certification transfer to another state?

Sometimes, and never automatically. Each state's Peace Officer Standards and Training commission sets its own rules, and they turn on academy hours, years of continuous service and how long it has been since you were last sworn. California's Basic Course Waiver, for example, requires at least two years of continuous experience with one agency and no more than a six-year break since your last peace officer employment, then a 161-hour requalification course taken in person in the state (California POST, accessed September 2026). Check the destination commission before you write the file.

Does military police or corrections time count as sworn experience?

It depends entirely on the state, and you should not assume it does. California's Basic Course Waiver currently excludes corrections-only deputies, certain federal police and military police (California POST, accessed September 2026). Write that service fully and accurately, but do not describe yourself as a lateral until the destination commission has told you that you are one.

What goes on a police officer resume with no experience?

The minimum standards, in writing: age, driver license, education, physical fitness assessment if you have taken it, and any disqualifier-free statement the agency asks for. Then whatever shortens your academy or widens your value: dispatch, corrections, military service, EMT certification, a second language, a criminal justice degree. BLS notes candidates usually must be at least 21 and that education ranges from a high school diploma to a college degree (BLS, 27 August 2026).

How do I write about arrests and incidents without naming anyone?

Write volumes and categories, never people or cases. "63 DUI arrests across a 6-month detail, 58 filed by the county attorney" is informative and discloses nothing. Never name a subject, a victim, a co-defendant or an open investigation, and never describe an incident in enough detail to identify it. Filing rate, report volume and returned-report rate are the numbers that make a file persuasive.
