Say lateral or entry in the first sentence
Applications are sorted before they are read, and the sorting question is whether you arrive with a certificate. A letter that makes a reader hunt for that answer goes into the slower pile.
If you are a lateral, name the commission, the certificate number and its status: "I am an active Arizona POST certified peace officer, #AZ-24118, with six years of patrol experience." If the certificate is from another state, add your break in service, because portability rules turn on it.
If you are an entry applicant, say so plainly, then say what shortens the academy: a criminal justice degree, dispatch or corrections service, military service, an EMT card, a second language.
