Summary

An electrician resume is a one to two page document naming your license tier and number, the code edition you work to, the work types you cover, and your first-time inspection record. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the license and code block most applicants leave off, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for the trade.

Electrician resume examples by experience level

An electrician resume is a one to two page document naming your license tier and number, the code edition you work to, the kinds of work you cover, and what happens when an inspector looks at your work.

The apprentice years are counted in hours, and our electrician apprentice resume example is built on that arithmetic. Once you are licensed the question changes. Nobody is adding up your hours any more. They are asking what you can be sent out to do alone and whether the permit closes on the first visit.

Resume guide for an electrician resume

This guide and the corresponding electrician resume example will cover:

  • How to write an electrician resume, section by section
  • Why your license tier, code edition and inspection record belong in one block
  • Three adaptable summaries: newly licensed, journeyman and contractor
  • How service work and new construction ask for two different resumes
  • What the job market looks like and what you can earn

How to write an electrician resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, license and code block, work experience, skills, education and certifications. One page for your first years after licensure, two once you run a truck or a crew.

The license block sits above experience because it is a legal gate rather than an achievement, and the tiers are not the same everywhere. California does not use a journeyman and master ladder at all. Its Electrician Certification Unit issues five separate certifications, and the hours differ by category: 8,000 for General Electrician, 4,800 for Residential Electrician, 4,000 each for Fire/Life Safety Technician and Voice Data Video Technician, and 2,000 for Nonresidential Lighting Technician, all worked for a C-10 electrical contractor (California Code of Regulations, Title 8, section 291.1).

Expert Tip

Write the tier the way your state writes it

Most states run an apprentice, journeyman, master ladder, where journeyman means you can work unsupervised and master means you can pull permits, supervise others and usually qualify a contracting business. A few do it differently, and a few leave licensing to the county.

So do not translate. Write the exact title on your card, the issuing body and the number: "California General Electrician Certification, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, #EC-2211408" reads as a fact. "Journeyman electrician" in a state that does not issue one reads as a guess.

If you also hold a contractor license, say so separately. A C-10 electrical contractor license comes from the Contractors State License Board and needs at least four years of journey-level, foreman, supervising or contractor experience in the classification to sit the examination (CSLB, Qualifying Experience for the Examination). It is a different document from the certification that lets you do the work.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker first. Large electrical contractors screen through a portal, and so do most facilities departments.

Choosing the best resume format for an electrician resume

Reverse chronological, always. A contractor reads an electrician's resume as a record of what you have been trusted with and for how long, and a format that hides the sequence reads as a sequence worth hiding.

One page covers your first years after licensure. Go to two when you have a crew, a project list worth naming, or a service history with numbers. Use month and year dates: construction is cyclical and short gaps are ordinary, but a long unexplained one invites a question you will not be in the room to answer.

Put the certification number in the header. It gets verified before you are dispatched, and a file that lets someone check it in ten seconds moves ahead of one that does not. Add the work type, because "electrician" covers two jobs that rarely hire the same person.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: license tier and years, the work types you cover, the code edition, and one result with a number.

Expert Tip

Service work and new construction are two different resumes

Both say electrician on the card, and they hire on almost nothing in common.

Project work is measured in installed scope: amperage, square footage, conduit and wire, schedule, crew size. A superintendent reads for whether you can be given a floor and a print and left alone. Service is measured in calls: volume per day, first-visit fix rate, callback rate, parts on the truck. A service manager reads for whether you can be sent to a stranger's house alone. Write to whichever one the job is, and give that one the numbers.

Your license tier, your code edition and your first-time inspection rate

This is the block almost nobody writes, and it decides the interview. Put the three together, because they answer one question: can this person's work be signed off.

Adaptable resume license, code and inspection block example

License: California General Electrician Certification #EC-2211408, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, current through March 2028. 32 hours of continuing education completed this cycle.

Contractor license: C-10 Electrical, Contractors State License Board #1094771, active since 2020.

Code: California Electrical Code, Title 24 Part 3, 2025 edition, effective 1 January 2026. Know the Sacramento, Roseville and Elk Grove amendments, particularly working clearance and service equipment location.

Permits and inspections: Pull my own permits in 4 jurisdictions. 210 permits over 6 years, 94% closed on the first inspection. Most common correction: labeling and available fault current marking.

Work types: Residential service. Commercial tenant improvement. Light industrial retrofit. Lighting and building controls. Solar PV and battery storage. Troubleshooting.

The license line is the gate. California certification expires three years from its effective date, and renewal requires 32 hours of continuing education relevant to your category plus 2,000 hours of industry work (Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, Electrician Certification Unit). A current cycle tells a contractor you will not go dark mid-project.

The code line surprises people. The National Electrical Code is published by the National Fire Protection Association, but nobody works to the NEC directly; you work to the edition your jurisdiction has adopted, plus its amendments. California republishes it as Title 24 Part 3, and the 2025 California Building Standards Code was published on 1 July 2025 effective 1 January 2026 (California Building Standards Commission). Naming your edition and amendments differentiates you, because correction notices come from amendments far more often than from the model code.

The inspection line is the closest thing the trade has to a performance metric, and your employer already tracks it. If you do not have it, count back through your last twenty permits and write the honest figure. A real 82% beats a rounded 95% that falls apart in the interview.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: installation, service and diagnostics, systems, code and safety. Skip soft skills.

Adaptable resume skills example

Installation: Service and distribution to 400 amps three phase, Switchgear and panels, Dry-type transformers, EMT and rigid to 4 inch, Grounding and bonding

Service and diagnostics: Residential and commercial service calls, Fault isolation, Load calculation, Arc fault and ground fault troubleshooting, Service upgrades

Systems: Motor control and VFD terminations, Lighting control panels, Fire alarm rough and trim, Solar PV and storage interconnection, Generator and transfer switch

Code and safety: California Electrical Code and local amendments, Permit and inspection close-out, NFPA 70E arc flash boundaries, Lockout tagout

List your education and certifications

The apprenticeship that produced the license, then formal education, then dated cards. The license itself is already in the block above; do not print it twice.

Adaptable resume education and certification example

Electrical Apprenticeship, Sacramento Area Electrical Training Center, Sacramento, CA, completed 2016. 8,200 on-the-job hours, all classroom terms.

Associate of Science, Electrical Technology, Sacramento City College, 2015.

Cards: OSHA 30 Construction (2025). NFPA 70E (2025). CPR and first aid (2026). Aerial and scissor lift (2025). Forklift (2024). California driver's license, clean record.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no graphics, no skill bars. Contractor and facilities portals parse the file into a structured record before anyone opens it, and columns and text boxes are where that parsing breaks.

Do

Put the license tier, issuing body and number in the header. Name the code edition and the amendments you know. Give a first-time inspection pass rate with the permit count behind it. Separate service work from project work and lead with whichever the job is. Name the voltages and amperages you work to. Keep continuing education current.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "journeyman" if your state does not issue that title. Do not claim scope your certification does not cover, since it is verified before dispatch. Do not round a rate you have not counted. Do not list an expired card without marking it expired. Do not use a two-column template for a contractor portal.

Statistical insight

The demand is in the projections; the pay is in the industry you pick

Employment of electricians is projected to grow 9 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding 75,900 jobs, with about 72,700 openings projected each year over the decade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).

But two thirds of the trade works for electrical contractors, the lowest paying of the major settings at a median of $61,570, against $74,550 in manufacturing and $79,820 in government (BLS, May 2025). That gap is about 30 percent, and it is not one you negotiate into. It is one you move into, which is why the work-type line matters: a plant hiring an industrial electrician reads for motor controls, VFDs and three-phase distribution, and a resume written entirely in residential service language will not read as a candidate for it.

What salary you can expect as an electrician

The median annual wage for electricians was $63,190 in May 2025, or $30.38 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $42,640 and the highest 10 percent more than $108,510 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Three things move you up that range, and all three belong on a resume. Setting: government and manufacturing pay medians of $79,820 and $74,550 against $61,570 at electrical contractors (BLS, May 2025). Scope, since an electrician who can terminate a VFD and interconnect a battery is billed differently. And responsibility: supervising, pulling permits, closing inspections in your own name. Overtime is a fourth factor that does not show in the median, and it is common (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).

Key takeaways for an electrician resume

  1. Put your license tier, issuing body and number in the header, written the way your state writes it.
  2. Name the code edition you work to and the local amendments you know.
  3. Give a first-time inspection pass rate with the permit count behind it.
  4. Decide whether the job is service work or project work, and lead with that one.
  5. Use real numbers: amperage, voltage, square footage, calls per day, callback rate.
  6. List the systems that widen your scope, from VFDs to solar and storage.
  7. Keep continuing education current, because a lapsed card takes you off the schedule.

Electrician resume questions, answered

How long should an electrician resume be?

One page for your first years after licensure. Two once you run a truck, supervise a crew, hold a contractor license, or have a permit history worth listing. A second page of duties rather than numbers is worse than one good page on its own.

What is the difference between a journeyman and a master electrician on a resume?

In most states journeyman means you can work unsupervised and master means you can pull permits, supervise others and qualify a contracting business. The ladder is not universal: California instead issues five certification categories, with 8,000 hours required for General Electrician and fewer for the narrower ones (California Code of Regulations, Title 8, section 291.1). Write the exact title on your card.

Should I put the NEC edition on my resume?

Yes, but name the edition your jurisdiction has adopted, not the newest one published. Adoption is a state and local decision and amendments are common, which is why California republishes the code as Title 24 Part 3, the 2025 edition effective 1 January 2026 (California Building Standards Commission). Which amendments you have worked under is more useful than which edition you own.

How do I show results on an electrician resume?

Use the numbers the work already produces. First-time inspection pass rate and permit count. Callback rate and calls per day for service. Amperage, voltage and square footage for installation. Crew size and installed value for a lead. Each needs a period of time attached, because a rate without a denominator is decoration rather than evidence.

Does solar and storage experience belong on an electrician resume?

Yes, and specifically. Say how many systems, what size, and which parts you did: array and inverter, rapid shutdown, PV disconnect, main panel interconnection, battery and backup loads panel. "Solar experience" can mean anything from commissioning to carrying panels, and a reader assumes the second unless you say otherwise.
