Summary

A housekeeping resume is a one-page document about rooms and guests: how many rooms you turn in a shift, what your inspection scores looked like, and how you work in an occupied building. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the numbers hotels actually measure, and how to write overseas hotel experience for a United States property.

Housekeeping resume examples by experience level

A housekeeping resume is a one-page document about two things: rooms and guests.

Every other cleaning job is measured in floors and square footage. Housekeeping is measured in rooms, and the rooms have people in them. An executive housekeeper wants to know how many rooms you can turn in a shift without the inspection score falling, and what you did the last time you found a wallet under a mattress.

Housekeeping, custodian and janitor are used interchangeably in postings, and they are not the same job. Housekeeping is rooms and guests. Our custodian resume example covers the institutional building role, usually a school, where the keys and the boiler come with the post. Our janitor resume example covers contract cleaning on a written scope of work, usually at night. If the posting says hotel, resort, hospital, senior living or private residence, you are on the right page.

Resume guide for a housekeeping resume

This guide and the corresponding housekeeping resume example will cover:

  • How to write a housekeeping resume, section by section
  • Rooms per shift, credits and inspection pass rate, and where each goes
  • Three adaptable summaries: attendant, senior attendant and executive housekeeper
  • Turnover and stayover, par levels, and guest property protocol
  • How to write overseas hotel experience, and what to do about gaps

How to write a housekeeping resume

Six short sections: contact header, summary, experience, skills, training and education. One page, and two only once you are running a department.

The header does more work here than in most jobs, because the first filter is setting. A hotel wants hotel. A hospital wants someone who has cleaned to an infection control protocol. A private household wants discretion and usually a driving license. Say which one you are in the first line.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Setting and property typeHotel, hospital, senior living or private household?Header line, under your name
Rooms per shiftCan this person carry a full board?Summary, then again in the bullets
Inspection pass rateDo the rooms come back clean the first time?Experience bullets
Guest handlingCan I put this person on an occupied floor? One bullet, plus lost and found

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you send it. Large hotel groups and hospital systems parse applications into a system before a human opens them.

Choosing the best resume format for a housekeeping resume

Reverse chronological, one page, single column, plain type. Hiring is high volume and fast, and the reader is usually an executive housekeeper who is short-staffed today.

A skills-first format hurts you, because the reader is checking continuity of setting. Three years at one 400-room property says more than a long list of cleaning verbs. If your record is broken up, keep the dates visible and explain the breaks in one honest line rather than hiding them behind a format.

Include your contact information

Three details there do real work. The property size says what kind of operation you are used to. The credit board is the number they staff against. The languages matter because much of American hotel housekeeping runs bilingually, and taking a briefing in English and passing it on in Spanish is a supervisory skill whether or not you hold the title.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: what you are, the setting and property size, your rooms and inspection number, and one thing you are trusted with.

New housekeeping adaptable resume summary example

Room attendant with one year at a 400-room full-service resort, carrying 15 to 16 credits a shift across checkouts and stayovers. First-pass inspection rate of 94% over the last two quarters, with no guest property incidents. Trained in the property's bloodborne pathogen and chemical handling modules, comfortable on occupied floors, and fluent in Spanish and English.

Experienced housekeeping adaptable resume summary example

Senior room attendant and floor trainer with six years across full-service resort and hospital environmental services work. Carry a 16-credit board while training new attendants through their first 90 days, and hold a 97% first-pass inspection rate across roughly 3,400 rooms a year. Manage linen and amenity par on two floors and run the lost and found log for my section.

Executive housekeeper adaptable resume summary example

Executive housekeeper running a 38-person department at a 612-room convention property, covering room attendants, housepersons, laundry and public area. Rebuilt the credit sheet so checkouts carry twice the value of stayovers, lifting board completion from 81% to 96% without adding headcount. Own the written musculoskeletal injury prevention program, the linen par and a 1.4 million dollar budget.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Senior Room Attendant and Floor Trainer, Palmetto Lakes Resort and Spa, 400 rooms, Orlando, FL, March 2022 to Present

Carry a 16-credit board across mixed checkout and stayover rooms on two guest floors, roughly 3,400 rooms a year.

First-pass inspection rate of 97% across the last eight quarterly audits, against a department average of 89%.

Maintain linen and amenity par on two floors, including the weekly count and the reorder request.

Train new room attendants through their first 90 days: shadow week, paired board, then solo with a daily check. 11 trained, 9 still with the property.

Run the lost and found log for my section, tagging and securing 60 to 80 items a year under the 90-day retention policy.

No guest is described there and no room number appears. Write the work, never the person in the room.

Overseas hotels, informal work and gaps. The problem is never the overseas record; it is that an American reader cannot size it. Give the room count and service level next to the property name, so "Hotel Miramar, 220-room beachfront hotel, Cartagena, Colombia" replaces a name that means nothing in Orlando. Use the American job title the postings use rather than a literal translation. Write private and agency work as employment: "Private household housekeeper for three families on a weekly rota, 2016 to 2019, including laundry, ironing, linen and light cooking, with keyholder responsibility for two properties" is a real employment history. Name any gap in one line and move on: a move between countries, caring for a family member, a visa wait. A labeled gap reads as a fact; a silent one reads as a question the reader answers for themselves.

The three numbers that decide a housekeeping hire: rooms, credits and inspection score

Almost every housekeeping resume says the applicant cleaned rooms. Almost none says how many, how they were counted, or how they came back from inspection. Those three numbers are the conversation an executive housekeeper is having with their own labor model.

Rooms and credits. Hotels staff by credits, not rooms, because rooms are not equal. A credit is a standardized unit of work: a standard occupied room is usually set at one credit, and anything longer is weighted up, so a suite that takes double the time becomes two credits. Attendants are then given a board of credits for the shift. Write both numbers if you have them: "15 to 16 credits a shift, roughly 13 to 14 physical rooms." If your property counted rooms instead, say rooms and say the property size.

Turnover against stayover. Two different jobs in the same uniform. A checkout is a full strip and reset: all linen, full bathroom, amenity replacement, deep detail. A stayover is a refresh around the guest's belongings, faster but far more delicate, because you are in someone's occupied space touching their things. Giving the mix, "about 60% checkouts on a typical board", tells the reader how hard your day was.

Inspection. Rooms are inspected, by a supervisor or by a floating quality team pulling a random sample. The number that matters is the first-pass rate: the share of your rooms released to sale without a callback. If you do not have it, use what you can evidence, such as quarters without a re-clean, or a property quality award.

Expert Tip

Ask for your inspection number before you leave a job

Most room attendants never see their own statistics, even though the property records them in the housekeeping module of the property management system every day.

Before your last shift anywhere, ask your supervisor three questions: what was my average credit board, what was my first-pass inspection rate, and how many rooms did I do last year. Write the answers down. Those three figures will carry your next four resumes.

If you have already left, reconstruct honestly rather than inventing. "Roughly 15 credits a day, five days a week" gives an annual figure you can defend in an interview, and defensible is the whole test.

Build a snapshot of your key housekeeping skills

Ten to fourteen entries in four groups, using the posting's own wording wherever it is accurate.

Adaptable resume skills example

Guest rooms: Checkout and stayover cleaning, Bed making to brand standard, Bathroom detail and terminal clean, Amenity and collateral set, Turndown service

Systems and stock: Housekeeping module of the property management system, Credit sheets and board assignment, Linen and amenity par levels, Inventory counts, Lost and found logging and retention

Safety and chemicals: Safety data sheets and dilution control, Bloodborne pathogen precautions, Musculoskeletal injury prevention practices, Cart and chemical security on occupied floors

Guest and team: Working occupied floors, Do not disturb protocol, Guest property handling, Training new attendants, Spanish and English

List your education, training and certifications

Formal education matters very little here. Training and certificates matter, because they say which settings you can be scheduled into on day one.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Certifications and training: Certified Health Care Environmental Services Technician (CHEST), Association for the Healthcare Environment, 2025. Bloodborne pathogen training, annual, current. Hazard communication and chemical handling, property program, annual. ServSafe food handler, 2024.

Education: Bachillerato, Instituto Tecnico Comercial, Cartagena, Colombia, 2009. English as a Second Language, Level 5, Orange County Public Schools Adult Education, Orlando, FL, 2021.

Languages: Spanish, native. English, professional working.

Expert Tip

The healthcare certificate that moves you into a different pay band

To move from hotel housekeeping into hospital environmental services, the recognized technician credential is CHEST, the Certified Health Care Environmental Services Technician, awarded by the Association for the Healthcare Environment.

It is built for people already doing the work rather than for graduates. Candidates need six months of healthcare environmental services cleaning experience and employment as an EVS technician, complete 24 hours of instruction from a designated trainer, and pass a 50-question exam. It lasts three years and renews with 15 hours of continuing education (Association for the Healthcare Environment, CHEST program information).

Hospitals cleaning to an infection prevention protocol pay differently from hotels, and this is the line that explains why you belong in the higher band.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no graphics, no skill bars. Save as PDF unless the portal asks for something else, and name the file for yourself and the post.

Do

Name the property and its room count, because 120 rooms and 600 rooms are different operations. Give credits or rooms per shift in the summary and again in the bullets. State your first-pass inspection rate. Say which settings you have worked: hotel, resort, hospital, senior living, private household. List your languages. Put your annual safety training on the page, since it means you can start without a training gap.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not describe a guest, a room number or anything you saw in a room. Do not write "attention to detail" and stop, because every file says it. Do not claim a certification you are only enrolled in; write "in progress" with the date. Do not translate an overseas job title into an American one that sounds bigger than the job was. Do not leave a gap unexplained when one honest line would close it.

Housekeeping job market and outlook

A very large occupation with steady replacement demand, and a hiring market that follows hotel occupancy rather than general economic growth.

Statistical insight

California made the housekeeping workload a written legal document

California Code of Regulations Title 8 section 3345, effective 1 July 2018, requires every lodging establishment in the state to establish, implement and maintain "an effective, written, musculoskeletal injury prevention program (MIPP) that addresses hazards specific to housekeeping".

The rule covers a category it defines to include "housekeepers, guest room attendants, room cleaners, maids, and housepersons" in "hotels, motels, resorts, and bed and breakfast inns". Employers must evaluate the hazards, involve employees in the annual review, investigate injuries, and train on "the signs, symptoms, and risk factors commonly associated with musculoskeletal injuries" and on early reporting, when the program starts and annually after, in a language the employees understand.

This matters beyond California. It is the clearest official statement anywhere that room workload, reaching, pushing carts and excessive work rates are recognized hazards rather than personal endurance problems. If you have sat on a property safety committee, helped review a MIPP, or trained others on lifting and cart handling, that is a real line and very few applicants have it.

What salary you can expect in housekeeping

The median annual wage for maids and housekeeping cleaners was $37,080 as of May 2025, across 860,670 workers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, released 15 May 2026).

The spread inside that number is setting and unionisation rather than negotiation. Healthcare environmental services generally pays above hotel housekeeping, and unionised full-service and convention properties in large markets pay above limited-service properties in the same city. Private household work is negotiated privately and varies more than any setting.

Where a resume moves money is at the edges of the role: a certification such as CHEST, a floor trainer line, public area or laundry experience, turndown and suite work, a supervisory board. So does availability. Weekend, evening and holiday coverage is scarce in a business that peaks when everyone else is off, and saying plainly that you can work it is worth money in a first offer.

Key takeaways for a housekeeping resume

  1. Lead with the setting and the property size, because that is the first filter.
  2. Give rooms or credits per shift, and say which of the two you are quoting.
  3. Put your first-pass inspection rate on the page, and ask for it before you leave a job.
  4. Split checkouts from stayovers; they are two different skills.
  5. Show par levels, lost and found and guest property handling, which prove you can be trusted alone on a floor.
  6. Size overseas properties in room counts so an American reader can compare them.
  7. Name your annual safety training, because it means you can start without a training gap.

Housekeeping resume questions, answered

How long should a housekeeping resume be?

One page. Two only once you are running a section or a department, where budget, headcount and program ownership need the room. A room attendant resume that runs to two pages is usually padded.

What do I put on a housekeeping resume with no hotel experience?

Whatever cleaning and care work you have actually done, written properly. Private homes, family businesses, care settings, offices, student accommodation, agency work. Give the number of properties or rooms, the schedule, the duration, and what you were trusted with, such as keys or alarm codes. Then add availability, languages and any safety training you already hold.

Should I put my inspection score on the resume?

Yes, if you know it and it is good. A first-pass inspection rate is the most persuasive number a room attendant can write, because it is the figure the person hiring is judged on themselves. If you do not have it, do not invent one; use credits per shift and the property size instead.

Is housekeeping the same as janitorial work?

No, though postings mix the words freely. Housekeeping is rooms and guests, measured in credits, usually daytime and usually in an occupied building. Janitorial work is contract cleaning against a written scope of work, measured in square footage, usually at night in an empty building. Custodial work is a building you are responsible for, usually a school. See our [janitor resume example](/resume/janitor/) for the comparison in full.

How do I write hotel experience from another country?

Give the property's room count and service level next to its name, so the reader can size it. Use the American job title that matches what you did, not a literal translation. Put your languages near the top. If your certificates were issued abroad, name the issuing body and the year rather than claiming a United States equivalent.
