A school bus driver resume is a one to two page document, and the question behind it is narrower than it looks. A transportation director is not deciding whether you can drive a bus. In practice, they are deciding which routes they can hand you.

That is the whole shape of the job. Clearance decides the route, and the route decides the hours, the pay band, the aide you work with and whether you also get the activity trips at the weekend. As a result, a file that shows only a license leaves the director guessing, and a director guessing in August puts you on whatever is left.

How to write a school bus driver resume

Overall, it takes six blocks: contact header, summary, clearances, route and driving experience, skills, and training with dates. As for length, use one page for most drivers, two once you train others or have run special needs routes for years.

Clearances go above experience because they are the gate. Two candidates with identical driving histories are not interchangeable if a district has cleared only one for a lift-equipped bus.

Choosing the best resume format for a school bus driver resume

Reverse chronological, single column, plain type. One page unless you train drivers, hold a long special needs history or have driven for several employers in the same county.

Continuity matters here more than in most driving work, because a district is buying somebody who will still be on the route in May. Also, show the school years you completed, not just the dates: "four complete school years, 2021 to 2025" answers the question a start and end date leaves open.

However, summer gaps are normal, so label them. A driver who works summer program routes, maintenance or another job between June and August should say which, in one clause, rather than leaving a hole in every year of the page.

In short, lines two and three are the resume in miniature: the clearances you hold, and which route they open. In other words, everything else on the page explains them.

First, write four lines: your endorsements, the route you run with its numbers, the extra qualifications on top of it, and your record.

The clearances that decide which route you can be given

This is the block most applicants leave out, and it is the one a transportation director is actually reading for.

The two endorsements are separate tests. The Handbook records that bus drivers need a commercial driver's license with a passenger (P) endorsement, and that school bus drivers additionally need a school bus (S) endorsement (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Bus Drivers, published 27 August 2026). Under 49 CFR 383.93 the federal endorsement scheme covers passenger (P), school bus (S), tank vehicle (N), hazardous materials (H) and double or triple trailers, and the passenger endorsement and the school bus endorsement each require their own knowledge test and skills test. Write both, with the issuing state and the year, because a district verifies them separately and an applicant who lists only "CDL" has to be chased for the rest.

Background checks school bus drivers face

The checks run before a route is assigned. Districts and contractors review criminal history and driving history before they put you in front of students, and a federal layer sits underneath: under 49 CFR 391.23 a motor carrier must obtain your motor vehicle record from every state licensing authority where you held a license in the previous 3 years, investigate your safety performance history with DOT-regulated employers over the preceding 3 years, and, since 6 January 2023, query the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. None of that is a reason to hide anything. It is a reason to state the checkable facts yourself: the states you have been licensed in, the years, and the previous employers a district can contact.

The route is what the clearance buys. Each type asks for something different on top of the endorsement, and each is worth a separate line:

Extra training that sets drivers apart

The extra training is where two applicants stop looking alike. Beyond the endorsements, districts require their own program before a driver takes a route, and more of it before a driver takes a special needs route. It usually covers pre-trip and post-trip inspection, the child check, loading and unloading and the danger zone, railroad crossing procedure, evacuation drills, student behavior management, and first aid and CPR. For special needs routes it adds wheelchair lift operation, mobility device securement, working alongside an aide, and the handling of the individual arrangements agreed for each student. Date all of it, because a district reads an undated training line as expired.

Seven lines, and a director can assign you before they interview you. That is the point of the block: it moves you from the pile of drivers who need to be asked to the short list of drivers who can be scheduled.

One honest note. If something will show on a record check, the resume is not where you explain it, but the interview is, and knowing what the file contains is better than being surprised by it. In fact, a driver who can say which states they held a license in and which employers the district will contact has already removed most of the friction from a hire.

List your education and certifications

Short. In practice, most of the page's weight sits in the clearance block, and the Handbook records a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for bus drivers, with no related work experience required (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Bus Drivers, published 27 August 2026).

Choose the right layout and design

For layout, use a single column, 11 or 12 point, no photograph, no graphics. The clearance block sets well as a short plain table or as dated lines; either parses. After all, a two-column template is where a portal loses the endorsement line, which is the one thing on the page you cannot afford to have dropped.

What salary you can expect as a school bus driver

School bus drivers earned a median of $47,920 a year as of May 2025, within a bus driver occupation whose overall median was $49,390, or $23.75 an hour (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Bus Drivers, published 27 August 2026).

Meanwhile, the comparison drivers ask about most is the other half of the occupation: transit and intercity bus drivers had a median of $59,050 in May 2025, against $47,920 on the school side. The same Class B license and passenger endorsement sit behind both, and the S endorsement is the only extra credential on the school side, so the gap is about hours and industry rather than about qualification.

Inside school transport, the industry you work for moves pay by several thousand dollars: $50,040 in school and employee bus transportation, $48,980 in local government excluding education and hospitals, $47,620 in other transit and ground passenger transportation, $46,100 in private schools and $45,830 in local schools (BLS, May 2025).

Instead, what the resume moves is the number of pieces you are eligible for. That is why districts assign special needs routes, midday trippers and activity trips to drivers already cleared for them, and each is paid work on top of the route.
