Summary

List the production worker duties the job posting names: assembly, machine operation, quality checks, safety, lean or 5S work, packaging and forklift or material handling. Then turn each duty into a bullet with an action verb, the equipment or product and a number, such as units per shift, scrap rate, downtime or days without an injury. Entry-level bullets stress reliability and speed; lead bullets stress training, output and improvement.

The best production worker duties for a resume are assembly, machine operation, quality checks, safety, lean or 5S work, packaging and material handling. List the ones the posting names, then add a number to each: units, scrap, downtime or safe days.

A plant manager already knows what a production worker does. So a list of tasks tells them little. But "packed 1,200 cases a shift with zero mis-ships" tells them how well you do it.

What production worker duties should you list on a resume?

List the production worker duties that match the posting: assembling parts, running and cleaning machines, checking quality, following safety rules, keeping 5S standards, packing orders and moving material. Put the duties the employer repeats first. Then add the equipment, the product and one number to each line so the reader sees your level.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics sums up the core job in one line.

Stat: about 177,500 assembler and fabricator openings a year, so production worker duties on a resume matter (BLS, 2026).
Figure 1The BLS projects about 177,500 openings a year for assemblers and fabricators, so a specific resume helps you stand out. Source: BLS1.

Assemblers and fabricators build finished products and the parts that go into them.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook

The core duties hiring managers look for

The BLS lists the main duties of assemblers and fabricators1: read blueprints, position parts by hand or hoist, use hand tools or machines to assemble, run quality checks and keep the work area clean. O*NET adds tasks for production helpers3, such as lifting materials, tagging parts, watching equipment for faults and counting finished goods.

  • Assembly: build, fit or fasten parts by hand, with power tools or on a line.
  • Machine operation: set up, run, adjust and clean presses, CNC machines, fillers or wrappers.
  • Quality checks: measure parts, compare them to specs and pull bad units.
  • Safety: wear PPE, follow lockout/tagout and report hazards.
  • Lean and 5S: sort, label and clean your station and join improvement events.
  • Packaging and shipping: pack, label, palletize and count orders.
  • Material handling: stage parts, load trucks and drive forklifts or pallet jacks.

Why it pays to get this section right

Production jobs turn over often, so plants hire all year. The BLS projects about 177,500 openings a year for assemblers and fabricators1 from 2025 to 2035, on a base of 1,799,500 jobs in 2025. That means a clear, specific resume can stand out in a large pool.

How do you turn production duties into measurable bullets?

Use a simple formula: action verb, the task, the equipment or product, then a number. Track units per shift, rate against target, scrap or defect rate, downtime, changeover time, safety days and audit scores. If you lack exact data, use a fair estimate, a range or a count, such as "3 machines" or "12 new hires."

A duty says what you were assigned. An accomplishment says how well you did it. Our guide on duties versus accomplishments on a resume shows the difference line by line.

Before and after: a vague production duty rewritten with machines, output and scrap rate (example).

  2. Name the toolsAdd the machine, product or system, such as a CNC lathe, a case packer, calipers or SAP.
  3. Add a numberGive units per shift, rate to target, scrap, downtime, safe days or audit scores.
  4. Show the resultEnd with what improved, such as fewer defects, faster changeovers or on-time orders.

Where do the numbers come from? First check shift boards, scrap logs, audit sheets and your own counts. Our guide on how to quantify your resume covers what to do when nobody tracked the data.

Ask for your line numbers before you leave

Most plants post daily output, scrap and downtime on a board or in a shift report. Write down your best weeks while you still see them. If you led a fix, note the before and after numbers the same day.

Production worker duties by task: copy-ready resume bullets

Group your bullets by the work you did most: assembly, machine operation, quality, safety, lean or 5S, packaging and material handling. Pick three to six that match the posting, change the numbers to your own and start each with a strong verb such as assembled, operated, inspected, packed or trained.

The numbers below are examples, so swap in figures you can explain. For more verb ideas, read our guide on how to write resume bullet points.

Assembly and machine operation

  • Assembled 450 wire harnesses a shift from blueprints at a 0.5% defect rate.
  • Operated 3 injection molding presses and cleared jams within 5 minutes.
  • Set up a CNC lathe for 6 part numbers and cut changeover time by 20 minutes.
  • Ran a filling line at 120 bottles a minute and logged checks every hour.

Quality checks and safety

  • Inspected 1 in 10 parts each hour with calipers and gauges and pulled bad units before packing.
  • Caught a mislabeled lot before shipment, so the plant avoided a customer return.
  • Followed lockout/tagout on 4 machines and reached 400 days without a recordable injury.

Lean, 5S, packaging and forklift

The EPA describes 5S as sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain6. So if you name a step you owned, the bullet reads as real lean work.

  • Led 5S on 2 workstations and raised the area audit score from 62% to 90%.
  • Packed and labeled 1,200 cases a shift with zero mis-ships in 6 months.
  • Loaded 8 trailers a day on a sit-down forklift with no product damage claims.

How should bullets change for entry-level, experienced and lead roles?

Entry-level bullets prove you show up, learn fast and work safely. Experienced bullets prove output, quality and machine skill with numbers. Lead bullets prove you train people, run a line to target and fix problems. So match your strongest three bullets to the level in the posting.

The duties stay similar across levels, but the proof changes. A new hire shows reliability; a lead shows results through others.

Entry-level production worker

The BLS says most assemblers need a high school diploma and several months of on-the-job training1. So if this is your first plant job, lead with attendance, speed to learn and safety.

ExampleEntry-level production worker

Learned 4 stations on a food packaging line within 6 weeks of hire.

Kept a 99% attendance record across rotating 10-hour shifts.

Packed 900 cases a shift and met the line target from week 3.

Completed OSHA 10-Hour General Industry training and daily PPE checks.

Experienced production worker

ExampleExperienced production worker

Operated 3 stamping presses at 104% of the hourly target for 2 years.

Lowered scrap on my cell from 3% to 1.8% after I adjusted die checks.

Trained on 9 machines, so the supervisor could move me where the line needed help.

Logged quality data in SAP each shift with no missed entries in 18 months.

Production lead

ExampleProduction line lead

Led a 12-person assembly line that hit 98% on-time output for 4 quarters.

Trained 9 new hires on standard work, and 8 passed their 90-day review.

Ran daily huddles and cut unplanned downtime 25% in 6 months.

Ran a kaizen event that removed 2 wasted moves and saved 40 minutes a shift.

What does a full production worker experience section look like?

A strong experience entry has your title, the plant, the city and dates, then four to six bullets. Open with your biggest output number, follow with quality and safety, then add machines, lean work and training. Keep each bullet to one or two lines and start it with a past-tense verb.

Here is a full entry built from the duties above. Each bullet names the equipment and ends with a number.

JORDAN LEE

Production Worker | Columbus, OH | jordan.lee@email.com

Production Worker, Midwest Auto Components, Columbus, OH | 2022 to now

Assembled 450 brake assemblies a shift on a 6-station line, 105% of target.

Operated 2 hydraulic presses and a torque tester and logged checks every hour.

Cut scrap on my station from 2.6% to 1.4% after I flagged a worn fixture.

Kept my area at 90% or higher on weekly 5S audits for 12 months.

Loaded outbound trailers on a sit-down forklift, OSHA-compliant evaluation current.

Trained 5 new hires on standard work and lockout/tagout steps.

Where duties end and skills begin

Put your tools and machines in a skills list too, so a recruiter who scans for "CNC" or "forklift" finds them twice. Our list of hard skills examples for a resume helps you name them.

Which skills and certifications back up your duties?

Back up your production worker duties with forklift training, OSHA 10 or 30 cards, first aid or CPR, and any soldering or quality training. Then list the machines, measuring tools and software you use. Say "trained" or "evaluated" for a forklift and "completed" for an OSHA card, because an OSHA card is not a license.

Quality skills can also lift your pay. The BLS reports a May 2025 median of $48,570 for quality control inspectors2, compared with $45,450 for assemblers and fabricators. So if you measure parts and log data, say so.

How to list forklift training

OSHA requires employers to train and evaluate each forklift operator. It also states that each operator's performance must be evaluated at least once every three years4. So write the truck type and the date of your last evaluation, such as "Sit-down counterbalance forklift, evaluated 2026."

How to list an OSHA card

The OSHA Outreach FAQ says an OSHA card is not a certification or license5. Instead, write "OSHA 10-Hour General Industry, completed 2025." Our guide to resume certifications shows how to format the whole section.

Match the plant's own words

Plants use different names for the same thing, such as "line operator," "assembler" or "production associate." Copy the posting's job title and machine names into your bullets. If the ad says "5S," write "5S," not just "organized my station."

What mistakes make production worker duties look weak?

The most common mistakes are task lists with "responsible for," no numbers, no machine or product names, the same bullets for every level and safety claims you cannot back up. Each one hides how fast, accurate and safe you are, which is what a plant manager hires for.

Strong production worker duties read like a shift report, not a job ad. So cut filler and show the result.

Do

  • Start each bullet with a verb such as assembled, operated or inspected.
  • Name the machine, product and measuring tools.
  • Add units, scrap, downtime or safe days.
  • Match the duties to the level in the posting.

Don’t

  • Write "responsible for production duties as assigned."
  • List every task you ever did on the floor.
  • Call an OSHA 10 card a license or certification.
  • Claim a line result as yours alone.

What to say if they push back

Interviewers often test the numbers on a production resume. Our list of warehouse interview questions covers similar follow-ups on safety and speed.

  • "How did you track 450 units a shift?" Point to the shift board or the counter on the line.
  • "Was the scrap drop yours or the team's?" Say what you changed and who helped.
  • "Have you had a safety incident?" Answer honestly and say what you changed after it.
TemplatePush back: the interviewer tests your scrap claim

Interviewer: "You cut scrap from 2.6% to 1.4%. How?"

"First I noticed parts failing at the same spot, so I checked the fixture and found it worn."

Interviewer: "What did you do next?"

"I told my lead, maintenance replaced it, and then I added a check at the start of each shift."

Frequently asked questions

What are the main production worker duties for a resume?

The main duties are assembling parts, operating and cleaning machines, checking quality, following safety rules, keeping 5S standards, packing orders and moving material. List the ones the job posting names first.

How do I describe production work on a resume?

Start each bullet with a verb, name the machine or product, then add a number such as units per shift, scrap rate or downtime. For example, write "Packed 1,200 cases a shift with zero mis-ships."

What should I put on a production worker resume with no experience?

Lead with attendance, speed to learn, safety training and any physical or team work from school, retail or warehouse jobs. An OSHA 10-Hour card and a forklift evaluation also help.

Should I put OSHA 10 on my resume?

Yes, if the job involves safety on a plant floor. List it as "OSHA 10-Hour General Industry, completed" with the year, because OSHA says the card is not a certification or license.

How many bullets should a production worker job have?

Use four to six bullets for your current or most relevant job and two to three for older jobs. Put your biggest output or quality number first.

What skills should a production worker list?

List machine operation, assembly, measuring tools such as calipers, quality checks, lockout/tagout, 5S, forklift operation and any software such as SAP. Add teamwork and reliability through your bullets, not as bare words.
