Summary

A strong marketing resume summary is 2 to 4 lines at the top of your resume. It names your specialty and years, the channels or audience you own, one or two results with numbers, such as ROAS, pipeline or engagement, and the skills the posting asks for. Write one version per role type, and keep every figure one you can explain in an interview.

A marketing resume summary is 2 to 4 lines that show a hiring manager your specialty, your channels and your results. Lead with your title and years, then prove your value with one number, such as ROAS, pipeline or growth.

Most marketing summaries say "creative, data-driven marketer." But every applicant writes that. The table below shows what to lead with in your situation.

What is a marketing resume summary?

A marketing resume summary is a short profile at the top of your resume, usually 2 to 4 lines. It states your specialty and years, the channels or markets you own and one or two results with numbers. So a hiring manager can see your fit before reading your work history.

Columbia University's career center gives a clear picture of the section. It says to keep the profile short4, with "two to five phrases written in a bulleted form or brief paragraph."

Stat: recruiters spend 7.4 seconds on a first resume screen, so a marketing resume summary must be fast (HR Dive, 2018).

Think of the summary as a snapshot of your skills, accomplishments, and knowledge.

Columbia University Center for Career Education

Why the first lines matter so much

Recruiters skim fast. In the Ladders 2018 eye-tracking study, they spent an average of 7.4 seconds on the first screen of a resume3. So your summary has a few seconds to say "this is the marketer we need."

Marketing is also a large and well-paid field. The BLS counts 454,800 advertising, promotions and marketing manager jobs in 20251, with a 2025 median pay of $165,780 and about 36,300 openings a year.

Summary or objective?

A summary fits marketers with at least a year or two of results. If you are a student or new graduate, a short objective may serve you better, as our marketing resume objective guide explains.

For full layouts by role, browse our marketing resume samples, from coordinator to director.

How do you write a marketing resume summary?

Use a four-part formula: your title and years, your specialty or channels, one or two results with numbers, then 2 to 3 skills or tools from the posting. Keep it to 2 to 4 lines. Drop "I," and replace each claim like "results-driven" with a figure that proves it.

Here is the formula in one line: [Title] with [years] of [specialty or channel] experience in [industry or audience]. [Result with a number]. Skilled in [2 to 3 tools or skills from the posting]. Then cut it until each word earns its place.

  1. Name your title and yearsStart with the job you want, such as "Performance marketing manager with 6 years," so the reader sees your level first.
  2. Add your specialty and audienceSay B2B or B2C, the channels you own and the industry, such as SaaS, retail or healthcare.
  3. Prove one or two resultsAdd revenue, pipeline, ROAS, CAC, traffic or engagement, with a time frame or a before-and-after number.
  4. Match the postingClose with 2 to 3 tools or skills the ad names, such as HubSpot, GA4 or account-based marketing.

Fill-in-the-blank template

TemplateFill-in-the-blank marketing summary

[TITLE] with [NUMBER] years of [SPECIALTY] experience in [INDUSTRY OR AUDIENCE].

[ACTION VERB] [WHAT YOU DID] that [RESULT WITH A NUMBER] in [TIME FRAME].

Skilled in [TOOL FROM POSTING], [SKILL FROM POSTING] and [SKILL FROM POSTING].

The University of Houston's Bauer career center suggests three to five lines5 that stress strengths for the role you want next. That means you write toward the job you are seeking, not the one you are leaving.

Pull your numbers before you write

Open your ad platform, CRM and analytics reports before you draft. Note spend, revenue, leads, pipeline and traffic for your best two campaigns. If a number came from a team effort, say "helped" or "led" so the claim stays honest.

What are the best marketing resume summary examples?

The best examples change with your role. A coordinator leads with campaigns and tools, a manager with team, budget and revenue, a digital marketer with ROAS and CAC, and a content or social marketer with traffic and engagement. Directors lead with strategy and pipeline.

The numbers below are examples, so replace them with figures you can prove.

Which marketing metrics belong in your summary?

Use one or two numbers the posting cares about most: revenue, pipeline, ROAS, CAC, conversion rate, traffic, engagement or launches. A performance role wants ROAS and CAC, a content role wants traffic and leads, a social role wants reach and engagement, and a manager role wants budget and revenue growth.

A number turns a claim into proof. In short, "data-driven marketer" says little, while "4.2x ROAS on $80K a month" says a lot. Our guide on how to put KPIs on your resume shows how to find and phrase them.

MetricHow to phrase itBest for
ROAS4.2x ROAS on $80K monthly ad spendPaid search, paid social
CACCut CAC 22% in 9 monthsPerformance, growth
PipelineSourced $14M in pipeline in a yearB2B demand gen, directors
Organic trafficGrew traffic from 20K to 85K monthly visitsContent, SEO
Engagement rateKept a 5.1% average engagement rateSocial media
Revenue growthGrew online revenue 32% in one yearManagers, ecommerce

How to explain ROAS and CAC in one line

ROAS is revenue divided by ad spend. Seer Interactive gives the example that $5,000 in Google Ads that brings in $10,000 in revenue is a ROAS of 26. So write it as "2x ROAS" or "4.2x ROAS," and always pair it with the spend level.

CAC is your marketing and sales cost divided by the number of new customers. If you lowered it, give the percent change and the time frame. A smaller CAC with steady volume shows you spent the budget well.

Use a before-and-after number

"Grew traffic 325%" can look inflated. Instead, write "from 20K to 85K monthly visits," because the start and end points make the claim easy to trust. Our guide on how to quantify your resume has more ways to frame results.

Which keywords should a marketing summary include?

Use 2 to 4 terms copied from the job posting: your specialty, such as demand generation or SEO, plus the tools, such as HubSpot, Salesforce, GA4 or Google Ads. Recruiters and applicant tracking systems both search for these exact words, so match the posting's spelling and wording.

First read the posting and highlight the specialty, the channels and the tools it repeats. Then put the most important two or three into your summary and the rest into your skills section.

SpecialtyKeywords to mirrorTools to name
Digital and performancePaid search, paid social, ROAS, CACGoogle Ads, Meta Ads Manager, GA4
Content and SEOContent strategy, SEO, organic growthWordPress, Ahrefs, Semrush
Social mediaCommunity management, short-form videoSprout Social, Hootsuite, TikTok
Product marketingPositioning, go-to-market, enablementGong, Figma, Salesforce

Our list of resume keywords explains how to choose them. The BLS also notes that most marketing manager roles need work experience in a related field such as sales, market research or public relations1, so name that background if you have it.

Let a tool draft the first version

If you are stuck, our AI resume builder drafts a marketing summary from your role and results. Then edit it so the numbers and tools are your own.

What mistakes weaken a marketing resume summary?

The biggest mistakes are buzzwords like "creative, results-driven marketer" with no numbers, no specialty or channel, vanity metrics such as likes without business impact, one summary sent to every job and results you cannot explain. Each one makes you sound like every other applicant.

So a marketing resume summary is your best ad. Instead of claiming you are strategic, show the budget, the channel and the result.

Do

  • Lead with your title, years and specialty.
  • Add one or two numbers tied to revenue, pipeline or growth.
  • Name the tools and channels the posting lists.
  • Write a separate version for brand, digital and product roles.

Don’t

  • Open with "creative, results-driven marketing professional."
  • List likes or impressions with no business result.
  • Claim a team result as yours alone.
  • Use "I," "me" or a long paragraph.
Turn vanity metrics into business results

Followers and impressions rarely impress a hiring manager on their own. Tie them to an outcome, such as leads, sign-ups or sales. For example, write "grew Instagram to 60K followers and drove 9% of online sales."

What to say if they push back

Interviewers often test the numbers in your summary. So prepare a short, honest answer for each claim. Our list of marketing interview questions covers the follow-ups you will hear.

  • "How did you measure that ROAS?" Name the platform, the attribution window and the time frame.
  • "Was the pipeline yours or the team's?" Say what you owned and what the team did.
  • "Why move from sales to marketing?" Point to the campaigns and copy you already built.
TemplatePush back: the interviewer tests your CAC claim

Interviewer: "Your summary says you cut CAC 22%. How?"

"First I moved budget from broad keywords to high-intent ones, then I fixed our landing page tests."

Interviewer: "Did lead volume drop?"

"It held steady, so cost per customer fell while sales stayed on plan. I can walk you through the report."

Frequently asked questions

What should I write in a marketing resume summary?

First write your title, years and specialty, then the channels or audience you own. Add one or two results with numbers and close with 2 to 3 tools or skills from the posting.

How long should a marketing resume summary be?

Keep it to 2 to 4 lines, so roughly 40 to 70 words. Move campaign details and employers into your experience section.

What is the difference between a marketing resume summary and an objective?

A summary shows the results you already have, so it suits experienced marketers. But an objective states your goal and fits students, new graduates and some career changers.

What metrics should a marketer put on a resume?

Use revenue, pipeline, ROAS, CAC, conversion rate, organic traffic, engagement rate, leads or launches. Pick the metric the job posting cares about most.

How do I write a marketing summary with no experience?

Lead first with your degree, internships, class projects or a certificate such as Google Ads. If you have managed a club or personal account, add one number from it.

Should a marketing resume summary use "I"?

No. Write in a short, implied first person, such as "Grew organic traffic 4x," and drop "I," "me" and "my."
