What are janitor duties for resume bullets?

Janitor duties for resume bullets are the core tasks of the job written as short action lines: emptying trash, cleaning floors, servicing restrooms, disinfecting high-touch surfaces, washing glass, ordering supplies, making minor repairs, reporting major ones and locking up. Pick the 4 to 6 that match the posting, then add scale.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists the core duties of janitors and building cleaners1. They gather trash, clean floors and restrooms, disinfect touch points, order supplies and make minor repairs. They also lock doors to secure the building.

O*NET, the federal job database, goes further. It lists 21 janitor tasks2, from stripping and sealing floors to mixing cleaning solutions to spec. Job postings often borrow its words, so use it as your keyword list.

20 janitor duties you can copy

Use these as plain duty lines first. Then upgrade your best three with numbers in the next section.

  • Trash and recycling. Gathered trash and recycling from offices and common areas and hauled it to the dock.
  • Floor care. Swept, mopped, scrubbed and vacuumed hard floors and carpet.
  • Floor finishing. Stripped, sealed, finished and buffed tile floors.
  • Carpet care. Shampooed and steam-cleaned carpets and spot-treated stains.
  • Restrooms. Cleaned and restocked restrooms with soap, paper and liners.
  • Disinfection. Cleaned and disinfected door handles, rails and other high-touch surfaces.
  • Glass. Washed windows, glass doors, partitions and mirrors.
  • Dusting. Dusted furniture, vents, ledges and equipment.
  • Spills. Cleaned spills and other floor hazards right away and set out wet-floor signs.
  • Chemicals. Mixed cleaning solutions to the label and read safety data sheets.
  • Supplies. Tracked stock and ordered cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Minor repairs. Fixed loose fixtures, changed light bulbs and unclogged drains.
  • Repair reports. Reported leaks, HVAC issues and major repairs to the facilities manager.
  • Security. Locked doors, set alarms and checked windows after hours.
  • Heavy items. Moved furniture and equipment with hand trucks and dollies.
  • Events. Set up and took down tables, chairs and stages for events.
  • Outdoor areas. Cleared snow and ice from walks and swept entrances.
  • Grounds. Mowed lawns and picked up litter around the building.
  • Pest control. Spotted signs of pests and reported them or applied approved treatments.
  • Equipment care. Cleaned and stored mops, buckets, vacuums and auto-scrubbers.

How do you quantify janitor duties on a resume?

Add scale, frequency or a result to each janitor duty. Count square feet, rooms, floors or buildings per shift, name the floor-care projects you finished, and note audit scores or zero-incident records. For example, "Cleaned 30,000 sq ft of office space each night" beats "Cleaned offices." Use only numbers you can explain.

Cleaning work hides its numbers, but they exist. Route sheets, floor plans and work orders all hold figures.

Where janitor numbers come from

  • Square footage. Ask your manager or check the building's lease or floor plan.
  • Rooms and floors. Count classrooms, patient rooms, offices or restrooms on your route.
  • Projects. Note floors stripped and waxed, carpets shampooed or summer deep cleans done.
  • Quality. Mention inspection scores, audit results or a run with no slip-and-fall reports.
  • Trust. Say if you held keys, set alarms or worked alone overnight.

If you lack an exact figure, use a safe range like "25,000+ sq ft." Never guess a number you cannot defend.

Duty vs accomplishment

Duty line (weak)Accomplishment line (strong)
Cleaned officesCleaned 30,000 sq ft across three office floors each night
Mopped floorsStripped and refinished 12,000 sq ft of hallway tile over winter break
Cleaned bathroomsServiced 14 restrooms per shift with no missed restock on audits
Ordered suppliesTracked stock and cut rush supply orders by planning weekly counts
Trained new staffTrained 5 new custodians on routes, chemicals and floor machines

These numbers are examples, so use your own figures.

ExampleOffice janitor, accomplishment bullets

JORDAN LEE

Columbus, OH | jordan.lee@email.com | (555) 014-2290

Cleaned 30,000 sq ft across three office floors each night for a 200-person firm

Serviced 14 restrooms per shift and kept supplies stocked on every audit

Stripped and refinished 8,000 sq ft of lobby tile during a weekend shutdown

Locked doors, set alarms and reported two roof leaks before they damaged offices

Tip

Ask for your square footage

Few janitors get told how many square feet they clean. Ask your supervisor or check the cleaning contract this week. One real number in your first bullet makes the whole resume read stronger.

Which janitor duties fit schools, hospitals, offices and night crews?

School custodians stress classrooms, cafeterias and summer deep cleans. Hospital EVS techs stress disinfection and patient rooms. Office janitors stress restrooms, break rooms and after-hours security. Night crews stress square feet and speed. Industrial cleaners stress safety and spills, and leads stress training and schedules.

About 1 in 3 janitors works for a cleaning contractor. According to BLS, services to buildings and dwellings employ 35% of janitors1, and schools employ 17%. Healthcare follows with 7%, while government and self-employed workers each hold 5%.

Figure 1Building services employ 35% of janitors and schools 17%, so tailor your duties to contractor and school postings first. Source: BLS1.

School custodian duties

  • Cleaned classrooms, hallways, gyms and cafeterias after school hours
  • Set up and broke down the cafeteria and gym for events and assemblies
  • Deep-cleaned and refinished floors during summer and winter breaks
ExampleSchool custodian

SAM CARTER

Dayton, OH | sam.carter@email.com

Cleaned 18 classrooms, two restrooms and one hallway each night shift

Stripped and waxed 15,000 sq ft of tile during the summer deep clean

Set up the gym and cafeteria for 30+ school events a year

Hospital and healthcare EVS duties

Healthcare work carries more risk. O*NET reports that 43% of janitors face disease or infection exposure every day2. So name your disinfection steps, isolation rooms and protective gear.

  • Cleaned and disinfected patient rooms after discharge and turned them for the next admit
  • Followed isolation room steps and used the right PPE for each room
  • Handled linen and regulated waste under hospital policy

Office and commercial night crew duties

BLS notes that janitors often clean offices in the evening, while buildings sit empty. Hospitals, by contrast, run cleaning shifts around the clock. So say when and how you worked, such as "solo overnight" or "four-person crew."

  • Cleaned 40,000 sq ft of retail space per night on a four-person crew
  • Covered three client sites per shift on a set route
  • Closed and secured each building and logged issues for the day team

Industrial and lead custodian duties

  • Industrial. Ran ride-on scrubbers, cleaned up oil and chemical spills and kept aisles clear for forklifts.
  • Lead custodian. Built nightly task lists, trained new hires, ran supply counts and did quality checks.
ExampleLead custodian

ALEX RIVERA

Reno, NV | alex.rivera@email.com

Led a 6-person night crew across a 90,000 sq ft office campus

Trained 5 new custodians on routes, floor machines and chemical safety

Ran weekly supply counts and kept the crew within its supply budget

Which safety and green cleaning credentials belong next to janitor duties?

List chemical safety training, any CHEST or GBAC training, and floor machine experience. Hazard communication training on safety data sheets is a federal rule, so you likely have it. CIMS is a certification for cleaning companies, not people, so write that you worked on a CIMS-certified team rather than claiming it yourself.

BLS says certification is not required. Still, it "demonstrates competence and may make applicants more appealing to employers." In addition, O*NET reports that 84% of janitors wear protective equipment every day2, so safety is a fair thing to prove.

Figure 2With 84% of janitors wearing protective equipment every day, safety training belongs next to your duties. Source: O*NET OnLine2.

Chemical safety and HazCom

OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard requires employers to train workers on hazardous chemicals3 when they start and when a new hazard arrives. So write "Trained in OSHA Hazard Communication and safety data sheets" if your employer trained you.

Chemical-specific information must always be available through labels and safety data sheets.

OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.1200(h)(1)

Green cleaning and infection credentials

CredentialWho earns itHow to list it
AHE CHESTHospital EVS techs with 6+ months of experienceCertifications section, with the year
GBAC FundamentalsCleaning workers who finish the online course"GBAC-Trained Technician" plus the year
ISSA CIMS or CIMS-GBCleaning companies, not individuals"Member of a CIMS-certified cleaning team" in a bullet
OSHA HazCom trainingAny worker who handles cleaning chemicalsSkills or certifications section

For example, AHE's CHEST certification4 asks for 6 months of healthcare EVS cleaning experience. Its exam has 50 multiple-choice questions. Meanwhile, the GBAC Fundamentals course5 is self-paced and online, and it ends with a certificate of completion.

ISSA describes CIMS as a certification6 for building service contractors and in-house cleaning teams. Therefore, you cannot hold CIMS yourself, but you can say you helped your team earn or keep it. See our guide to resume certifications for the format.

Tip

Name your floor machines

Postings often ask for "floor machine experience." So name the machines you run, such as auto-scrubbers, burnishers, buffers and carpet extractors. A named machine is a skill a manager can picture.

How do you write janitor bullets step by step?

Start with the job posting and mark every duty it names. Pick 4 to 6 matching duties, add square feet, rooms or a project to each one you can, and put your strongest line first. Then check that your skills and certifications use the posting's exact words before you apply.

Many employers screen applications with software first. Therefore, the words in your janitor duties for resume bullets should match the posting, such as "custodian," "EVS" or "floor care."

  1. Read the posting Highlight each duty, setting and skill it names, such as floor care, EVS or night shift.
  2. Pick your duties Choose 4 to 6 duties you did that match those words.
  3. Add scale Add square feet, rooms, floors, sites or a project to each line you can.
  4. Order by impact Put your biggest result first and routine tasks like trash runs last.
  5. Draft and check Build the page in a resume builder and confirm the posting's keywords appear.

You can paste your bullets into Rezoom's AI resume builder, which suggests verbs and formats the page for you. Then compare your draft with our janitor resume examples to check bullet order and length.

Fill-in-the-blank template

ExampleFill-in-the-blank janitor bullets

Cleaned [NUMBER] sq ft of [office/school/hospital] space each [day/night] shift

Serviced [NUMBER] restrooms and [NUMBER] [classrooms/patient rooms/offices] per shift

Stripped and refinished [NUMBER] sq ft of [tile/VCT] floors during [PROJECT OR BREAK]

Trained [NUMBER] new custodians on [ROUTES/CHEMICALS/FLOOR MACHINES]

What to say if they push back

  • "How do you know it was 30,000 square feet?" Name the source, such as the route sheet or the cleaning contract.
  • "Have you ever had an accident with chemicals?" If so, say what happened and what you changed, such as labeling every spray bottle.
  • "Can you work alone at night?" Point to your key-holder duties, alarm codes and solo shifts.
ExamplePush back: an interview for a night custodian job

[Supervisor: "Your resume says 30,000 square feet a night. Alone?"]

"No, I worked on a three-person crew. My route covered the second and third floors, about 30,000 square feet."

[Supervisor: "And no missed restocks on audits?"]

"Yes. I checked each restroom twice a shift and logged it on the route sheet our manager reviewed."

Is janitor experience still worth listing on a resume?

Yes. Janitor work proves you are reliable, safe with chemicals and trusted with keys, and employers keep hiring. BLS projects about 321,800 openings a year through 2035, and the work can lead to lead custodian, maintenance or facilities roles.

BLS counted about 2.4 million janitor and building cleaner jobs1 in 2025. It projects 2% growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 321,800 openings each year. The median wage was $17.71 an hour in May 2025.

Use janitor duties to move up

Janitors who make minor repairs already do part of a maintenance job. So browse our maintenance and repair resume examples to see how those duties read on a maintenance technician page.

Do

  • Start each bullet with a verb like cleaned, stripped or serviced.
  • Name the setting, such as school, hospital or office.
  • Add square feet, rooms or floors where you can.
  • List safety training and floor machines by name.

Don’t

  • Write "Responsible for cleaning" on every line.
  • List every task, including each type of dusting.
  • Claim a CIMS certification as your own.
  • Use "I" or "my" in bullets.

Frequently asked questions

What do I put on my resume for janitor duties?

List 4 to 6 duties such as floor care, restroom service, trash removal, disinfection, supply orders and building security. Start each with a verb and add square feet or rooms where you can.

How do I describe janitorial experience on a resume?

Describe it with scale and results, not just tasks. For example, write "Cleaned 30,000 sq ft each night" instead of "Cleaned the building."

What is the difference between a janitor and a custodian on a resume?

The duties overlap, and BLS groups them together. Use the title the posting uses, such as "custodian" for schools, so your resume matches its keywords.

What skills should a janitor put on a resume?

List floor machine use, chemical safety, disinfection, minor repairs and time management. BLS also names physical stamina, mechanical skills and interpersonal skills as key qualities.

Do janitors need a certification?

No. BLS says most janitors learn on the job, but a credential like CHEST or GBAC training can make you stand out.

How many bullet points should a janitor resume have?

Use 4 to 6 bullets for your latest job and 2 to 3 for older ones. Put your biggest result first.
