Summary
List a sorority or fraternity on your resume when you held a role, ran a project or need evidence of leadership and teamwork. Put officer roles under Leadership Experience and plain membership under Activities. Spell out the chapter name, translate internal titles into plain job titles, and write two to four results-based bullets. Drop jargon like "pledge" or "ritual," and cut the entry once professional experience fills the page.
To put a sorority or fraternity on a resume, list it like a job: your role, the full chapter name, the university and the dates, followed by bullets that show results. Officer roles go under Leadership Experience. Plain membership fits in one line under Activities.
That is the whole format. The harder part is the translation. Recruiters outside Greek life may not know what a "Standards Chair" does, so your entry has to explain the work in everyday business terms.
This guide covers when to include it, where it goes, the exact format, how to write the bullets, and when to cut it.
Should you put a sorority or fraternity on a resume?
Yes, if you held a position, led a project or have little work experience. A sorority or fraternity can show leadership, budgeting, event planning and teamwork. If you were only a member and already have internships or jobs, a one-line Activities entry is enough. Once professional experience fills the page, you can drop it.
Employers hire for skills, and they want proof. NACE reports that 70% of employers now use skills-based hiring, and that critical thinking, communication and teamwork top their list. A chapter role is often where a student first manages money, people and deadlines.
Use this quick decision rule:
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Officer, chair or council role | Full entry under Leadership Experience with 2–4 bullets |
| Active member, no office, thin work history | One line under Activities, plus one bullet if you ran an event |
| Member only, solid internships or jobs | One line under Activities, or leave it off |
| 3+ years of full-time experience | Usually cut it, unless you hold an alumni leadership role |
| Honor society (for example Phi Beta Kappa) | List under Education or Honors, not Greek life |
The last row matters. Honor societies with Greek-letter names are academic honors, so they belong with your degree. Our guide to Latin honors on a resume shows the format.
Where does Greek life go on a resume?
Put Greek life under Leadership Experience if you held an office, and under Activities or Campus Involvement if you were a member. For students with no jobs yet, a strong chapter role can sit near the top of the page. Never bury a treasurer or president role inside the Education section as a single line.
The University of Louisville career center recommends a Leadership Experience section with the position title, dates, organization, university and 3–5 bullets. Marshall University adds that plain membership belongs in an Activities section.
Here is how placement shifts by situation:
- First-year or sophomore, no jobs yet: Leadership or Activities can sit right after Education. See our resume with no experience guide for the full layout.
- Junior or senior with internships: Experience first, then Leadership, then Activities.
- Several campus groups: Group them in one section. Our sibling guide on extracurricular activities on a resume covers how to rank them.
- Chapter philanthropy you organized: It can also count as volunteer work. Read how to list volunteer work on a resume before you split it out.
How do you format a sorority or fraternity entry?
Write your role as a plain job title, then the full sorority or fraternity name with chapter, then the university and dates. Spell names out in English letters instead of Greek symbols, and use "member" instead of "sister," "brother" or "new member class." Add 2–4 bullets that start with a verb and include a number.
Louisville's career team says to spell out the full organization name rather than Greek letters. Write "Kappa Alpha Theta," not "ΚΑΘ." Symbols can confuse readers and some applicant tracking systems.

Louisville also advises using non-Greek language for the position title. Its example turns "High Beta" into "Vice President." Marshall says to use "member" rather than "sister/brother/rushee".
OFFICER ROLE (Leadership Experience) Vice President of Finance | Kappa Alpha Theta | University of Arizona | Aug 2024 – May 2025 • Managed a $142,000 annual operating budget for 160 members; closed the year 4% under budget • Cut late dues payments from 31 to 9 members by moving collection to an online payment system
COMMITTEE CHAIR Philanthropy Chair | Sigma Chi | University of Texas at Austin | Jan 2025 – Dec 2025 • Planned a three-day charity event with 22 volunteers that raised $38,500, up 27% year over year
MEMBER ONLY (Activities) Member, Delta Gamma Sorority, Ohio State University, 2023 – Present
If you held two roles in the same chapter, stack them under one organization heading with separate dates. That shows progression, the same way you would show a promotion at work.
What should you write about your chapter role?
Write bullets about outcomes a business would recognize: money raised or managed, events planned, members recruited or trained, and problems solved. Lead with an action verb, include a number in most bullets, and put the bullet that matches the job posting first. Skip social events, chants, rituals and anything you could not explain in an interview.
Marshall's guide tells students to quantify how many attendees, events, dollars raised, team members and hours were involved. Colorado State's career center suggests moving the bullets that best match the role closer to the top for each application.

Match the chapter role to the skill a recruiter is scanning for:
| Chapter role | Plain resume title | Skill it proves | Strong match for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treasurer | Vice President of Finance | Budgeting, accounting | Finance, accounting, operations |
| Recruitment chair | Recruitment Director | Sales, interviewing, marketing | Sales, HR, recruiting |
| Philanthropy chair | Philanthropy Director | Event planning, fundraising | Nonprofit, events, marketing |
| Social media chair | Communications Chair | Content, analytics | Marketing, communications |
| Standards or judicial board | Conduct Board Chair | Policy, conflict resolution | HR, compliance, law |
| President | Chapter President | Leadership, operations | Management trainee programs |

Weak: Was in charge of recruitment Strong: Led a 40-member recruitment team through 4 days of events; hit the 52-member quota set by the campus council
Weak: Helped with philanthropy Strong: Secured 11 local sponsors for a charity 5K, raising $12,300 for a children's hospital
Weak: Social chair, planned parties Strong: Coordinated 9 events per semester with venue contracts, risk plans and a $6,000 budget
Write for the reader who never joined
Read each bullet and ask whether a hiring manager with no Greek life experience would understand it. If a bullet needs insider knowledge, rewrite it in terms of money, people, time or results. "Ran 1,200 member check-ins through a digital system" beats any internal title.
When should you leave Greek life off or tone it down?
Leave Greek life off when it adds nothing your experience section already shows, when the chapter was suspended for misconduct, or when the employer is outside the US and unfamiliar with Greek culture. For organizations rooted in religion or ethnicity, you can still list the role while describing it by the skills you used.
Some chapters are linked to a faith, culture or heritage. The EEOC warns employers that questions about organizations, clubs, societies and lodges that may reveal race, sex, national origin, religion or other protected traits should generally be avoided. You are free to list the group, but you choose how much it reveals.
Spell out the full chapter name in English letters
Use Greek symbols such as ΣΧ or ΔΓ in the heading do: Translate internal titles into standard job titles dont: Use insider words like "pledge," "ritual" or "line sister" do: Lead with money, events, members and results dont: List parties, mixers or formals as achievements do: Keep it to one line if you were a member only dont: Give a member-only entry three bullets of filler
Louisville's career team flags "ritual" and "pledge" as words to remove. Colorado State adds a simple test: do not include anything you are not prepared to discuss in an interview.
If your chapter made the news for the wrong reasons, keep your entry but focus it on your own work. If you cannot do that honestly, cut it.
How long should Greek life stay on your resume?
Keep Greek life on your resume through your first job search and while it still outranks your work history. After two to three years of full-time experience, most people cut it. Keep it longer only if you hold an alumni board or national volunteer role, or if the employer has a strong Greek alumni network.
A good test is space. If a chapter bullet is pushing out a stronger internship or job result, it goes. Recent graduates should still aim for a one-page resume.
After you cut it, your Greek life story can still help. Use it in interview answers about leadership and conflict, and list the group in LinkedIn's Organizations section.
When your entries are ready, build the page in the Rezoom AI resume builder. It formats Leadership and Activities sections cleanly so each sorority or fraternity role reads like real experience.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put my sorority on my resume?
Yes, if you held a role or need evidence of leadership and teamwork. If you were a member only and already have internships, one line under Activities is enough.
Do you write Greek letters on a resume?
Spell the name out in English, such as "Delta Gamma," instead of using Greek symbols. Spelled-out names are easier for recruiters to read and for applicant tracking systems to parse.
Can listing a fraternity hurt my resume?
It can if the entry focuses on social life or if the chapter has a public record of misconduct. A results-based entry about your role rarely hurts, and it often helps students with thin work history.
Where do honor societies with Greek names go?
Academic honor societies such as Phi Beta Kappa go under Education or Honors. Our sibling guide to [awards on a resume](https://rezoom.io/awards-on-resume/) shows how to format them.
What if I was only a member and not an officer?
List it in one line under Activities with your chapter, university and dates. Add one bullet only if you led a specific event or project.
Should I list my fraternity on LinkedIn?
Yes. Add it to the Organizations section with your role and dates, even after you remove it from your resume.
