Summary
A paralegal resume shows substantive legal work performed under attorney supervision, which means every line has to stop exactly at the unauthorized practice of law. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the discovery and e-discovery detail that gets read first, the certifications that exist and what each requires, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.
Paralegal resume examples by experience level
A paralegal resume shows substantive legal work performed under the supervision of an attorney, described precisely enough to be credible and carefully enough that no sentence claims work only a lawyer may do.
That second half is the part candidates get wrong. A paralegal drafts pleadings, manages discovery, cite-checks briefs, summarizes depositions and builds the trial exhibit list. A paralegal does not give legal advice, set a fee or accept a case. A resume that blurs the line reads as a liability, and a supervising attorney is the person reading it.
Paralegal and legal assistant are used interchangeably by many employers and are genuinely different jobs. The paralegal role is substantive; the legal assistant role is procedural, running the calendar, the docket, the filings and the billing. If the posting describes calendaring, e-filing and intake, our legal assistant resume example is written for that work.

How to write a paralegal resume
Six sections: contact header, summary, experience, practice areas and platforms, education and certifications, and skills. One page for your first seven years, two once you have run discovery on large matters or supervised other paralegals. Litigation, corporate, immigration, intellectual property, real estate and estate planning paralegals do different work under different rules, and a firm hiring for one is not interested in general enthusiasm for the others.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | Which practice area, how many years, at what volume? | Directly under the header |
| Experience | What did you produce, and who reviewed it? | Reverse chronological, with volumes |
| Platforms | Can this person work in our review database tomorrow? | Its own named block |
| Certifications | CP, RP, CRP or PP, with the awarding body | Under education |
Quantify discovery, because volume is the only common language
Two paralegals can both write "managed document review" and mean completely different jobs. One coded 4,000 documents on a small employment matter; the other ran a 400,000-document review with contract reviewers, a privilege log and a production schedule.
Give the reader the numbers you have: documents reviewed, gigabytes collected, custodians, productions made, privilege log entries, review team size. Name the platform with them, because Relativity, Everlaw and DISCO are not interchangeable and firms recruit for the one they license. One line does it: "First-pass review of roughly 400,000 documents across 22 custodians in Relativity, with 6 rolling productions and a 1,900-entry privilege log."
Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you send it. Firms and legal recruiters parse resumes into a database before a person reads them.
Choosing the best resume format for a paralegal resume
Reverse chronological. One page for your first seven years, two once volumes and supervision justify it. Functional formats fail in legal hiring, because attorneys read for continuity: which firm, which practice group, how long, and whether you left in the middle of a trial. A format that hides the timeline invites the assumption that the timeline is the problem.

Make use of a summary
Four lines: practice area, years, the volume you have handled, and the platform or specialization that makes you useful on day one.
Litigation paralegal in the first year of practice, supporting two attorneys in an employment litigation group under direct attorney supervision. Index and code discovery in Relativity, prepare deposition summaries, cite-check briefs to the 22nd edition of The Bluebook, and maintain the chronology and privilege log for six active matters. NALA Certified Paralegal and a graduate of an ABA-approved program.
Litigation paralegal with seven years in complex commercial litigation, managing document review and production on matters running to 400,000 documents in Relativity and Everlaw. Draft discovery responses, subpoenas and routine pleadings for attorney review, build and maintain privilege logs, and run trial preparation including exhibit lists and witness binders. NALA Certified Paralegal, working under the supervision of the responsible attorney on every matter.
Senior litigation paralegal with 15 years in complex commercial and employment litigation, 6 of them leading e-discovery for a 40-attorney firm. Prepare the paralegal side of the Rule 26(f) conference materials, negotiate review protocols and pricing with vendors, and supervise three paralegals plus contract review teams of up to 14. Moved first-pass culling in-house, cutting average review cost per gigabyte by 38%. NFPA Registered Paralegal.
Right vs wrong: the same paralegal summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Litigation paralegal with seven years in complex commercial litigation. | Legal professional with a passion for justice and client service. |
| Manage document review and production on matters running to 400,000 documents in Relativity. | Assist attorneys with discovery and case management. |
| Draft discovery responses and routine pleadings for attorney review. | Advise clients on discovery obligations and case strategy. |
The third row is the one that matters. The right version describes the same task and stays inside the line. The wrong version describes the unauthorized practice of law, and it will end the application.
Outline your experience
Firm, city, practice group, dates. Then four to six bullets, each naming a work product, a volume and, where it is not obvious, the supervision.
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| Assisted attorneys with discovery | Ran first-pass review of roughly 400,000 documents across 22 custodians in Relativity, with 6 rolling productions |
| Drafted legal documents | Drafted interrogatory responses, requests for production and third-party subpoenas for attorney review on 30 to 40 matters a year |
| Performed legal research | Cite-checked and Bluebooked 14 appellate briefs to the 22nd edition, and pulled and verified every record citation against the appendix |
| Prepared for trial | Built exhibit lists, witness binders and the deposition designation chart for a three-week jury trial |
| Summarized depositions | Produced 60 to 80 page and line indexed deposition summaries a year, averaging 48 hours from transcript receipt |
Describe the matter, never the client
Everything on a paralegal's desk is confidential and much of it is privileged. Client names, matter names, party names, settlement amounts tied to an identifiable case and any detail that would let a reader work out who was involved never go on a resume, in a portfolio, or into an interview answer.
Describe matters by type, size and your role. "A multi-district products liability matter with 22 custodians and roughly 400,000 documents" is precise, useful and identifies nobody. A named client is a warning about what you would say later.
Portfolios carry the same trap. Do not attach a brief, memorandum or privilege log as a writing sample unless it is fully redacted and the former employer has agreed; a redacted public filing is safer, and a piece written for the purpose safer still.
Litigation Paralegal, Fennimore Adesanya LLP, Newark, NJ, June 2019 to Present
Support four attorneys in a complex commercial and employment litigation group across 30 to 40 active matters.
Manage discovery end to end: collection scoping with custodians, first-pass review of up to 400,000 documents in Relativity, privilege logs of up to 1,900 entries, and rolling productions on an agreed protocol.
Draft interrogatory responses, requests for production, third-party subpoenas and routine motions for attorney review; the supervising attorney signs and takes responsibility for every filing.
Cite-check and Bluebook briefs to the 22nd edition, verifying every record citation against the appendix before filing, and produce 60 to 80 page and line indexed deposition summaries a year.
Run trial preparation: exhibit lists, witness binders, deposition designation charts and courtroom technology, including one three-week jury trial.
The unauthorized practice of law line, and how to write right up to it
This is the section that separates a paralegal resume from every other legal resume, and it is where careers are quietly lost.
A paralegal performs substantive legal work, but only work a lawyer has delegated and remains responsible for. The American Bar Association's Model Guidelines for the Utilization of Paralegal Services put it plainly. Guideline 2 allows a lawyer to delegate any task normally performed by the lawyer, "provided the lawyer maintains responsibility for the work product," except tasks proscribed to a nonlawyer by statute, court rule or the rules of professional conduct. Guideline 3 then says a lawyer may not delegate responsibility for establishing an attorney-client relationship, for establishing the amount of a fee to be charged for a legal service, or for a legal opinion rendered to a client (ABA Model Guidelines for the Utilization of Paralegal Services).
Those three exclusions are the line: you cannot accept a case, set a fee, or give legal advice. Everything else is available to you if an attorney delegates it and supervises it. The ABA definition, adopted in 1986 and amended in 1997, makes the dependency explicit: a paralegal "performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible."
On the page, the line is a matter of verbs:
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| Advised clients on their legal options | Prepared client status memoranda and case summaries for attorney review |
| Handled my own caseload of 40 matters | Supported 40 active matters for four supervising attorneys |
| Represented clients at mediations | Attended mediations with the supervising attorney and prepared the mediation statement exhibits |
| Negotiated settlements | Prepared settlement analyses and demand package exhibits for attorney review |
| Set fee arrangements with new clients | Prepared engagement letters on the attorney's instruction for attorney signature |
| Took on new clients | Conducted initial intake interviews and conflict checks, referring all substantive questions to the attorney |
The line is enforced by state law, not by etiquette
Unauthorized practice of law is defined and policed state by state, not federally, and the definitions are not identical. A few jurisdictions have created narrow licensed nonlawyer roles, but no state licenses paralegals generally, and the role everywhere depends on attorney supervision.
The occupation is also stable rather than expanding, which raises the cost of a misstep: the Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 404,900 paralegals and legal assistants in 2025, projects no change through 2035, and still expects about 40,800 openings a year, almost all from replacement (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). In a replacement market applications are compared closely, and a resume with one overclaiming verb loses to an identical resume without one, because the supervising attorney carries the professional responsibility for whoever is hired.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: discovery, drafting and research, trial, and platforms. Keep the platforms named, and keep them current.
Discovery: Document review and coding, Privilege log construction, Production protocols and rolling productions, Custodian interviews and collection scoping, Redaction and Bates numbering
Drafting and research: Discovery responses, Third-party subpoenas, Routine pleadings for attorney review, Deposition summaries, Bluebook cite-checking to the 22nd edition, Record citation verification
Trial: Exhibit lists, Witness binders, Deposition designation charts, Courtroom technology, Trial logistics
Platforms: Relativity, Everlaw, Westlaw and Lexis, iManage, Adobe Acrobat Pro, CM/ECF and PACER
List your education and certifications
Degree, then the paralegal program with its accreditation status, then certifications with the awarding body and the year. An ABA-approved program is worth naming as such, because firms use it as a filter. The national credentials are voluntary; none is a license and none is required to work:
| Credential | Body | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Paralegal (CP) | NALA | Three eligibility pathways: paralegal studies, bachelor's degree, or paralegal experience. Recertification takes 50 continuing legal education hours every five years, at least five in legal ethics (NALA, 2026) |
| Registered Paralegal (RP) | NFPA | The PACE examination, 200 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours, for paralegals with comprehensive education and years of practical experience. Renewal takes 12 CLE hours including one ethics hour (NFPA, 2026) |
| CORE Registered Paralegal (CRP) | NFPA | The PCCE examination, 125 multiple-choice questions of which 15 are unscored, in 2.5 hours, for early-career and entry-level paralegals. Renewal takes 8 CLE hours including one ethics hour (NFPA, 2026) |
| Professional Paralegal (PP) | NALS | A one-day, four-part examination, open to graduates of an ABA-approved paralegal program or to paralegals with a minimum of five years of experience (NALS, 2026) |
Bachelor of Arts, Political Science, Rutgers University, Newark, NJ, 2017
Paralegal Certificate, Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ, 2018. Program approved by the American Bar Association.
Certifications: NALA Certified Paralegal (CP), 2019, recertified 2024. NFPA Registered Paralegal (RP), 2023. Relativity Certified Administrator, 2022. Notary Public, State of New Jersey, commission expires 2029.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 10 to 12 point type, clear headings, no photograph, no graphics, no skill bars. Recruiting databases parse resumes into structured fields and multi-column layouts break that parsing. Proofread three times, then have someone else read it: a paralegal resume with a citation formatted wrong or a typo in a rule number argues against itself, because precision is the product.
Name the practice area and the platform. Quantify discovery in documents, custodians, productions and privilege log entries. Say "for attorney review" or "under the supervision of" where the work product was substantive. Name the Bluebook edition you cite to. List certifications with the awarding body and the year. Describe matters by type, size and your role.
Do not write that you advised, represented, negotiated, counseled or handled your own caseload. Do not name a client, a matter or a party. Do not attach an unredacted work sample. Do not list a paralegal program without saying whether it is ABA-approved, because firms ask. Do not claim a certification you have not been awarded, since both NALA and NFPA maintain verifiable registries.
Paralegal job market and outlook
A large occupation with heavy replacement demand and no net growth, concentrated in law firms.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Paralegal and legal assistant jobs, 2025 | 404,900 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0% (little or no change), -1,100 |
| Projected employment, 2035 | 403,800 |

Where the work sits:
| Industry | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Legal services | 75% | $61,770 |
| Local government, excluding education and hospitals | 5% | $63,370 |
| Federal government, excluding postal service | 4% | $81,470 |
| State government, excluding education and hospitals | 3% | $59,320 |
| Finance and insurance | 3% | $80,120 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025.
Three quarters of paralegals work in legal services, which pays the second lowest median of the five industries listed. The two highest-paying settings, federal government and finance and insurance, employ 7% of the occupation between them. That gap is the most actionable fact on this page.
What salary you can expect as a paralegal
The median annual wage for paralegals and legal assistants was $62,890 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning under $44,740 and the highest 10 percent over $101,500 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Three things a resume can speak to drive that spread. Industry is the first: federal government work paid a median of $81,470 and finance and insurance $80,120 against $61,770 in legal services (BLS, May 2025). Practice area is the second, with intellectual property, patent prosecution support and complex commercial litigation generally paying above general practice. E-discovery is the third: a paralegal who can scope a collection, negotiate a review protocol and administer Relativity is doing work firms otherwise buy from a vendor, and that is visible on an invoice.

Paralegal resume questions, answered
What is the difference between a paralegal and a legal assistant?
A paralegal performs substantive legal work that an attorney has delegated and remains responsible for: discovery management, drafting for attorney review, cite-checking, deposition summaries and trial preparation. A legal assistant runs the procedure and administration of a matter: calendaring and docketing, e-filing, intake, billing and logistics. Many employers use the titles interchangeably, so read the duties in the posting and write to those.
Do I need to be certified to work as a paralegal?
No. Certification is voluntary and no state licenses paralegals generally. It still helps at the screening stage, and the recertification requirement is evidence of current knowledge: NALA requires 50 continuing legal education hours every five years including five in legal ethics, and NFPA requires 12 hours including one ethics hour for the RP credential (NALA and NFPA, 2026).
What should I never put on a paralegal resume?
Any verb that claims lawyer work. Advised, represented, counseled, negotiated, and "my own caseload" all describe the practice of law. Also leave out client names, matter names, party names, settlement figures tied to an identifiable case, and any unredacted work sample. A supervising attorney reading an overclaiming resume is assessing their own professional exposure, not just your experience.
How do I quantify my experience if my matters were small?
Use the numbers you have and be honest about the scale. "Managed discovery on 12 employment matters, each running 3,000 to 8,000 documents in Everlaw, with privilege logs of 40 to 120 entries" is credible and specific. Small-matter experience done well is a better signal than a vague claim about large ones, and a firm hiring for small matters is reading for exactly that.
Does the Bluebook edition really matter on a resume?
It is a small detail that tells a reader you follow the standard. The current edition is the 22nd, published in 2025 by the Harvard Law Review Association. Naming the edition you cite to, and naming any local court citation rules you work under, signals that you know citation is versioned and jurisdiction-specific rather than a single generic skill.
