Open with the volume, not with your interest in the firm
Most paralegal cover letters open by admiring the firm. The attorney reading the stack already knows about the firm, and is looking for the one thing the resume compresses badly: scale.
Open instead with the shape of the work you have handled. "Seven years in commercial and employment litigation, running document review and production in Relativity and Everlaw on matters up to 400,000 documents" tells the reader your practice area, your seniority, your platform and your ceiling in a single sentence.
Then keep that register for the whole letter. The tone that works here is the tone of a good status memorandum: specific, ordered, and free of adjectives.

Verbs that end an application, and what to write instead
A paralegal performs substantive legal work delegated by an attorney who remains responsible for it. The American Bar Association's Model Guidelines for the Utilization of Paralegal Services say a lawyer may not delegate responsibility for establishing an attorney-client relationship, for establishing the amount of a fee to be charged for a legal service, or for a legal opinion rendered to a client (ABA Model Guidelines for the Utilization of Paralegal Services).
In a cover letter, where the register is naturally more confident than a resume, that line gets crossed by accident more often than anywhere else.

Why the wording is read so closely
This is a replacement market, not a growth market. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 404,900 paralegals and legal assistants in 2025, projects no change in employment through 2035, and still expects about 40,800 openings a year, almost entirely from workers leaving the occupation (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).
Replacement hiring means the reader is comparing close substitutes. Two candidates with similar volumes and the same platform are separated by smaller things, and one of the smaller things is whether the letter shows an accurate understanding of what a paralegal may do.
Certification reads the same way. Both national credentials carry a live maintenance obligation, with NALA requiring 50 continuing legal education hours every five years including five in legal ethics, and NFPA requiring 12 hours including one ethics hour for the Registered Paralegal credential (NALA and NFPA, 2026). Naming the credential and the year tells the attorney your ethics training is current.

Say "for attorney review" or "under the direction of the supervising attorney" at least once. Name the credential and the year. Address one concrete thing in the posting. Say once, plainly, that you can go into detail without naming a client.
Do not write advised, represented, negotiated, counseled or "my own caseload". Do not name a client, a matter, a party or a settlement figure. Do not attach an unredacted work sample. Do not pad the letter with admiration for the firm. Do not send the same letter to a litigation group and a corporate group; the evidence is not interchangeable.
