Summary
An attorney resume is a one to two page document whose first block is an admissions line: which bars, granted when, in what standing, and which federal courts. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the rules on score transfer and admission on motion, what to write while a result is pending, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.
Attorney resume examples by experience level
An attorney resume is a one to two page document whose most important block is four lines long: the bars you are admitted to, the year each admission was granted, your standing in each, and the federal courts you can appear in.
Attorney and lawyer are the same role under two words, and no employer distinguishes between them. What this page owns is the credential side: admission, jurisdiction and the mechanics of moving between states. For naming your practice area and building a representative matters list, read the lawyer resume guide, which covers that half in full.
The credential side earns its own page because it is the part that disqualifies people. A recruiter screening ninety applications is not weighing your brief-writing against anyone else's on the first pass. They are asking whether you can be admitted where the job sits, and how long that would take.

How to write an attorney resume
Six sections: contact header, admissions block, summary, experience, education and skills. One page early, two once you have a practice. The admissions block sits inside the header or directly beneath it, and it is the only section on a legal resume read as a gate rather than as evidence.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Admissions | Can this person be hired here, and from when? | Header or first block, with years |
| Summary | What kind of attorney is this, at what level? | Four lines |
| Experience | What have they run, and in which forums? | Reverse chronological |
| Education | Law school, degree, year, anything selective | Bottom after your third year |
| Compliance | CLE current, standing, no public discipline | One line inside admissions |
Write the admissions block as a list with years, not as a sentence
"Licensed to practice law in Colorado and admitted in federal court" is what almost everyone writes, and it is the least useful version, because it hides the year, the court and the standing. Write instead:
Colorado, 2020, active and in good standing. Wyoming, 2023, by UBE score transfer, active. U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, 2020. U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, 2022.
Four lines, and a recruiter can now tell your seniority, your geographic reach, whether you can appear or only advise, and that you have never gone inactive.
Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you submit. Firms and legal departments parse applications into a system before a hiring partner opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for an attorney resume
Reverse chronological, single column, one page until roughly five years and two after. Legal hiring reads for an unbroken sequence of school, admission, employer and practice group, and a functional layout hides exactly what the reader is checking.
If your career crosses states, do not reorder the page by jurisdiction. Keep the chronology and let the admissions block carry the geography.

Spell the jurisdictions out where you have room. "Admitted to practice in several states" is the most common way an attorney resume throws away its best fact.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: what kind of attorney, where you are admitted and since when, the scale and forums of your work, and one thing you carried yourself.
Civil defense attorney awaiting the July 2026 Colorado bar result, with a Uniform Bar Examination score of 288 and character and fitness approved in August 2026. Two years as a certified student attorney and law clerk in insurance coverage and premises liability, drafting 22 research memoranda and 6 motions filed substantially as drafted. My UBE score is above the current transfer threshold in every UBE jurisdiction, so I can seek admission in a second state without re-sitting.
Insurance coverage and civil defense attorney admitted in Colorado since 2020 and in Wyoming since 2023 by UBE score transfer, with 6 years of first-party and third-party coverage work across the Mountain West. Carry 30 to 40 open files with reserves from $50,000 to $4M, appear in Colorado and Wyoming state courts and the District of Colorado, and have tried 2 cases to verdict and arbitrated 5 to award.
Coverage and civil defense attorney with 14 years of practice, admitted in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah and to the Tenth Circuit, leading a 7-attorney regional defense team. Handle coverage opinions, declaratory judgment actions and trial work for national carriers across four states, with a portfolio of roughly $3.6M in annual billings from 8 carrier relationships. Built the team's multi-jurisdiction intake so a new state can be staffed within a quarter.
Right vs wrong: the same attorney summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Admitted in Colorado since 2020 and Wyoming since 2023 by UBE score transfer. | Licensed attorney in good standing, admitted in multiple jurisdictions. |
| Carry 30 to 40 open files with reserves from $50,000 to $4M. | Manage a busy and varied caseload. |
| Tried 2 cases to verdict and arbitrated 5 to award. | Significant trial and arbitration experience. |
The right column tells a recruiter exactly where you can be staffed and from when. The left column makes them write an email to find out, and most of them do not write the email.
Outline your experience
Employer, city, group, title, dates. Then three to five bullets, each naming a forum and a number. Where your work crosses state lines, say which state each piece of it sat in.

Associate, Coverage and Civil Defense, Trelawney Ibarra LLP, Denver, CO, January 2021 to Present
Carry 30 to 40 open files at a time for national property and casualty carriers, reserves from $50,000 to $4M, in Colorado and Wyoming state courts and the District of Colorado.
Write first-party and third-party coverage opinions, roughly 40 a year, and handle the declaratory judgment actions that follow from them.
Tried 2 premises liability cases to defense verdict and arbitrated 5 matters to award.
Obtained Wyoming admission by UBE score transfer in 2023, opening a second state for the team without adding headcount, and appeared pro hac vice in 3 Montana matters between 2023 and 2025, sponsored by local counsel.
The admissions block: which bars, when, and in what standing
This is the block that decides whether your file is read, and most attorney resumes reduce it to a single vague line.
Give one line per admission, each with four things: the jurisdiction, the year, the route if it was not by examination in that state, and your current status.
Bar admissions
Colorado, admitted 2020 by examination, active and in good standing Wyoming, admitted 2023 by Uniform Bar Examination score transfer, active Utah, admitted 2024 by admission on motion, active U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, 2020 U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming, 2023 U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, 2022
No public discipline in any jurisdiction. Continuing legal education current in all three states.
Three points most applicants get wrong. State the status word: bars distinguish active from inactive, and inactive is not a defect if you were in-house or on leave, but silence about it reads worse than the fact. Give the year, not just the state, because years of admission are how legal employers calculate class year and therefore your salary band. And say if you have no discipline; one line covering all jurisdictions saves the reader a lookup.
Moving states: UBE score transfer, admission on motion and pro hac vice
There are three ways to practice in a state you did not sit the exam in, they take very different amounts of time, and a resume that names the right one makes you hirable immediately.
Transferring a UBE score. The Uniform Bar Examination is administered in 33 jurisdictions and is made up of the Multistate Bar Examination weighted at 50%, the Multistate Essay Examination at 30% and the Multistate Performance Test at 20%, reported on a 400-point scale (National Conference of Bar Examiners, 2026). A UBE score is portable: you can transfer it to seek admission in another UBE jurisdiction without sitting another exam, provided you took all components in the same jurisdiction at the same administration.
Two limits decide whether that helps you. Minimum passing scores range from 260 to 270 depending on the jurisdiction, so a score that passed where you sat may not clear the bar where you are moving. And scores age out: the maximum accepted age of a transferred score runs from 2 years in North Dakota and Rhode Island to 5 years in jurisdictions including Arizona, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Ohio and Texas (NCBE, 2026). Character and fitness is decided separately by each jurisdiction and must be applied for again.
If your score would transfer somewhere the employer operates, that is worth putting on the page in your first five years.
Admission on motion. Once a score has aged out, the usual route is admission on motion, also called reciprocity or admission without examination, granted to attorneys who have practiced for a set number of years and satisfy that state's requirements. The rules differ in every jurisdiction, including which states each will reciprocate with. The authority to check is the Comprehensive Guide to Bar Admission Requirements, whose 2025 edition covers admission by examination and on motion for all United States jurisdictions (American Bar Association Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, 2025).
Pro hac vice. Appearing in a single matter in a state where you are not admitted, on motion, with local counsel sponsoring you. It is not an admission and should never be written as one, but the appearances are real experience and belong in your bullets.
List each admission on its own line with the jurisdiction, the year, the route and the status. Include every federal district and circuit court. Say whether you have any public discipline. Name the route when you were admitted without sitting that state's exam. Write pro hac vice appearances in your experience bullets. State that CLE is current.
Do not write "admitted in multiple jurisdictions" and leave it there. Do not describe a pro hac vice appearance as an admission. Do not imply you are admitted somewhere an application is merely pending. Do not hide an inactive status; label it. Do not put a bar number on a public document unless the employer asks for it. Do not claim a UBE score transfers without checking the receiving state's minimum score and maximum score age.
Federal court and patent bar admissions
Federal district and circuit admissions are the cheapest credential in law and the most frequently omitted. They are usually a form, a fee and a sponsor, and they separate an attorney who can sign and appear in that court from one who cannot. List every one with its year, and where a district has a second tier, such as the Northern District of Illinois distinguishing general bar admission from trial bar membership, say which you hold.
The patent bar is a different credential and worth naming precisely. Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office requires legal, scientific and technical qualifications plus good moral character under 37 CFR 11.7, and a registration examination of 100 multiple-choice questions over two three-hour sessions, of which 90 are scored and 63 correct are needed to pass (USPTO, Office of Enrollment and Discipline). A registered patent attorney holds a law license and files a certificate of good standing; a patent agent meets the scientific and technical requirements without one. Write which you are, with your registration number, because the two are not interchangeable to an employer.
What to write while a bar result is pending
Write it plainly, with the date, and never leave it ambiguous. An employer who cannot tell whether you are admitted will assume you are not.
Bar admission
Sat the Colorado bar examination, July 2026. Results expected October 2026. Character and fitness application approved August 2026.
Uniform Bar Examination score 288, above the current minimum passing score in every UBE jurisdiction.
Registered for the November 2026 Colorado new admittee ceremony, subject to result.
Three things make that block work. Name the sitting and the month results are expected. Say where character and fitness stands, because it is the step that actually delays admissions and an approved application is a real asset. And if your score is portable, say what it unlocks.
If you failed a sitting and are retaking, write the next sitting date and nothing else. You are not required to disclose a prior failure on a resume. While you wait, the honest titles are law clerk, law graduate or legal intern; do not call yourself an attorney before you are sworn in, because in most states that is a misrepresentation with consequences beyond losing the job.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Ten to fourteen entries in three groups: substantive, procedural, and systems.
Substantive: First-party and third-party coverage analysis, Declaratory judgment actions, Premises and products liability defense, Bad faith litigation, Reservation of rights and coverage opinions
Procedural: Multi-jurisdiction practice management, Dispositive motion practice, Depositions, Mediation and arbitration, Trial practice, Pro hac vice and local counsel coordination
Systems: Westlaw and Lexis, Relativity, Litify, CM/ECF and state e-filing in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah, Carrier billing platforms and litigation guidelines
List your education, character and fitness, and CLE compliance
Law school, degree, year, then anything selective. After your third year this shrinks to two lines and the admissions block does the work.
Juris Doctor, University of Colorado Law School, Boulder, CO, 2020. Civil practice clinic, 9 matters to resolution. Managing editor, Colorado Environmental Law Journal.
Bachelor of Arts, History, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, 2017.
Continuing legal education: current in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. 48 credits in the most recent Colorado compliance period, including 8 in professional responsibility and 2 in equity and inclusion.
Character and fitness: approved in all jurisdictions of admission. No public discipline.
CLE is one line and worth including, because a lapse is one of the ordinary ways a good attorney turns out to be administratively suspended. A reader who sees the line stops wondering.
Attorney job market and outlook
A large occupation with steady growth, a high entry bar and a market regulated state by state.

The licensed population is larger than the employed one. There were 1,374,720 licensed lawyers in the United States in 2025, up 18,757 on 2024 and the first significant rise since 2020 (American Bar Association, National Lawyer Population Survey, 8 December 2025). The gap against the 863,700 jobs the BLS counts is inactive licenses, retirees, judges, academics and people admitted in more than one state.
The exam itself is changing, and where you sit now affects where you can move later
The NextGen bar examination was first administered in July 2026 in ten jurisdictions: Connecticut, Guam, Idaho, Maryland, Missouri, the Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, Palau, the Virgin Islands and Washington. Forty-nine jurisdictions have announced adoption, with 13 more in July 2027 and 24 in July 2028 (National Conference of Bar Examiners, 2026). Scores are reported on a 500 to 750 scale and each jurisdiction sets its own passing score.
The existing Uniform Bar Examination remains in 33 jurisdictions on the 400-point scale, with minimum passing scores from 260 to 270 and maximum transferred score age from 2 to 5 years (NCBE, 2026).
For anyone admitted in the next few years, two scoring systems will be in circulation at once and transfer rules will depend on which examination you sat. Write the examination name, the score and the year rather than just "passed the bar", and a receiving state can see immediately what it is looking at.
Where attorneys work, and what each setting pays:
| Setting | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Legal services | 52% | $157,870 |
| Self-employed | 11% | Not reported |
| Local government | 8% | $131,390 |

| Federal government | 5% | $178,380 |

What salary you can expect as an attorney
The median annual wage for lawyers and attorneys was $159,670 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $78,360 and the highest 10 percent over $351,600 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
At entry the number is set by employer type rather than by you. The median first-year associate salary was $200,000 as of 1 January 2025 and $215,000 in firms of 701 or more lawyers, though only 32% of offices had adopted the widely quoted $225,000 figure (NALP, 2025 US Associate Salary Survey, 28 May 2025). Across all class of 2024 graduates the median was $95,000: $160,000 in private practice, $100,000 in business, $79,900 in government and $72,000 in public interest (NALP, Class of 2024 Selected Findings, March 2025).
Where admissions move money is in the second and third state. An attorney admitted in three adjoining jurisdictions can be staffed on matters a single-state colleague cannot, which is worth more to a regional firm than any negotiating phrase. A portable score, or existing eligibility for admission on motion where the employer works, converts directly into billable reach.
Key takeaways for an attorney resume

- List every federal district and circuit admission, including any trial bar tier.
- Say your standing, and label inactive rather than hiding it.
- If a result is pending, give the sitting, the expected result month and where character and fitness stands.
- Never call yourself an attorney before you are sworn in.
- Check the receiving state's minimum score and maximum score age before claiming a transfer.

Attorney resume questions, answered
Is there a difference between an attorney resume and a lawyer resume?
No. The two words describe the same role and American legal employers use them interchangeably, so write whichever the posting uses. Only the emphasis differs: this page covers admissions and jurisdiction, the [lawyer resume guide](/resume/lawyer/) covers practice area and the matters list, and a complete file needs both.
Where do bar admissions go on an attorney resume?
In the contact header or a block immediately beneath it, one line per admission with the jurisdiction, year, route and standing. Never at the bottom inside education. It is the first thing a legal recruiter checks, and burying it costs you screens you would otherwise pass.
What do I write if I am waiting on bar results?
Name the examination and sitting month, the month results are expected, and where your character and fitness application stands. If you sat the UBE, include the score, because it tells a receiving jurisdiction whether it transfers. Use law clerk, law graduate or legal intern as your title until you are sworn in.
Can I put a pro hac vice appearance in my admissions block?
No. It is an appearance in one matter with local counsel sponsoring you, not an admission, and listing it as one is the kind of overstatement that ends an application. Put it in your experience bullets with the state, the number of matters and the years.
How do I show that I am moving to another state?
Give the target city in your header and a line naming your route to admission and how long it takes: a UBE score inside the transfer window, eligibility for admission on motion, or a sitting already booked. Employers reject out-of-state candidates on the assumption that admission is slow and uncertain, so remove the uncertainty in one sentence.
Does continuing legal education belong on an attorney resume?
One line saying it is current in each jurisdiction, with the credit total and professional responsibility component for your most recent compliance period. It is short, checkable, and it rules out the administrative suspension a reader would otherwise wonder about.
