An immigration lawyer resume is a one to two page document naming your bar admission, your registration to appear before the immigration courts, and the specific benefits or proceedings you handle.
The last of those is what most immigration resumes get wrong. "Immigration law" is not one job. A lawyer who files family petitions and a lawyer who tries removal cases before an immigration judge share a statute and little else: different forms, different agencies, different adversary, different skills. A hiring partner recruits for one of those practices, not for the field.

How to write an immigration lawyer resume
Six sections: contact header, summary, bar admission and court registrations, legal experience by case type, languages, and education. One page until you have a reported decision or a team.
Admissions sit above experience because they are jurisdictional facts, not achievements. Immigration is federal practice: under 8 CFR 1001.1(f), an attorney appearing before the immigration courts and the BIA is a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of any state, territory, possession or the District of Columbia. One admission reaches the whole country.

State your bar admission and your EOIR registration separately
These are two different things and firms check both. Bar admission is a state licensing fact. Registration with the Executive Office for Immigration Review is a separate federal step: the Department of Justice requires attorneys and accredited representatives to register with EOIR to represent people before the immigration courts and the Board of Immigration Appeals (DOJ EOIR, eRegistry program).
Write both lines plainly: "Admitted, State Bar of Texas, 2018, No. 24118406. Registered with EOIR (eRegistry), 2018." List federal district and circuit admissions separately, because petitions for review go to the courts of appeals. If your admission is in a different state from your office, say so: immigration practice is federal, and stating it stops a recruiter filtering you on geography.

Reverse chronological. One page as an associate, two once you have appellate work, a reported decision, supervisory responsibility or a practice you built.
Legal resumes are read for trajectory and forum: which cases you carried alone, before which decision-maker, for how long. A functional layout hides both, which reads as evasion in a profession built on records.

This is the block that makes an immigration resume legible, and almost everybody leaves it out. Immigration practice divides into distinct areas requiring different knowledge and, in several cases, a different temperament. Name yours, and name the ones you can cover.

Three things follow, and all three belong on the resume.
The first is that removal defense is litigation and the rest largely is not. A removal case is adversarial, calendared, evidentiary and appealable, with a government attorney opposite. If that is your practice, write it as a litigator does: forums, hearings, briefs, outcomes.
The second is that the employment-based side runs on agency process rather than hearings. The Department of Labor certified 138,093 permanent labor certification applications in fiscal year 2025 and denied 3,404, with 157,669 still pending on 30 September 2025 (DOL Office of Foreign Labor Certification, PERM Selected Statistics FY2025 Q4). Volume, timelines and audit response rates are the metrics there.
The third is that language capability is a genuine hiring criterion here, not a decorative extra. Intake, declaration drafting and hearing preparation happen in the client's language, and a firm hiring an interpreter for every meeting runs a slower and costlier file.

Don’t
- Do not name a client, use initials, give an A-number, a receipt number or a case number, or describe an individual's circumstances; that material is confidential and in most matters privileged, and disclosing it in a job application is the fastest way to fail an ethics screen.
- Do not write "all areas of immigration law" unless you can answer detailed questions about six of them.
- Do not claim a language you cannot take a declaration in.

Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 11 or 12 point, serif or clean sans, no photograph, no graphics. Legal hiring is conservative about format for a reason: the document is read as a writing sample before anyone calls it one. Keep practice areas, forums and languages high enough to survive a ten-second scan.

The caseload is enormous and most of it is unrepresented
The immigration courts held 3,141,306 pending cases at the end of July 2026, and only 22.8 percent of people had an attorney when a removal order was issued against them that month (TRAC, Syracuse University, immigration court quick facts, July 2026).
EOIR reported completing more than 722,000 cases in the first eleven months of fiscal year 2025 and cutting its pending caseload from roughly 4.18 million to under 3.75 million between January and September 2025 (U.S. Department of Justice, EOIR, 4 September 2025).
For a resume the operative fact is the representation rate. Where fewer than a quarter of respondents have counsel, hearing experience accumulates quickly for those doing the work, and merits hearing volume is a scarce, checkable credential. Write the number of hearings you have tried, not the number of clients you have helped.

What salary you can expect as an immigration lawyer
The median annual wage for lawyers was $159,670 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $78,360 and the highest 10 percent above $351,600 (BLS, May 2025). Immigration practice sits across that range, and which end you land in is mostly a function of who pays the bill.
Business and employment-based immigration is bought by employers, often on volume retainers, and pays toward the upper part of the distribution. Removal defense and humanitarian work is paid by individuals, legal aid budgets or foundations, and pays lower. Non-profit roles are lower again, and are often the fastest route to hearing volume.
Three things move an individual offer: merits hearing and appellate volume, because it cannot be acquired quickly; professional-level language capability, because it changes what a firm can staff you on; and business immigration process depth, because a firm running employer accounts is buying throughput.

Do I need to be admitted in the state where I practice immigration law?
Not necessarily. Immigration is federal practice, and 8 CFR 1001.1(f) defines an attorney for EOIR purposes as a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of any state, territory, possession or the District of Columbia. You must also register with EOIR to appear before the immigration courts and the BIA. State bar rules on maintaining an office still apply.
What should an immigration lawyer put on a resume with no experience?
Clinic work written as practice: the clinic, the case types, the matters you carried, the forums you appeared in and what you filed. Then internships with legal services organizations, a judge or an agency, professional-level language proficiency, and any volunteer filing work. Immigration clinics give more real client contact than most law school experiences.
How do I show results without breaching confidentiality?
Report in aggregate and by case type. "Tried 96 merits hearings with relief granted in 61 percent" discloses nothing about anyone. Client names, initials, A-numbers, receipt numbers, case numbers and individual circumstances are confidential and usually privileged, and must not appear on a resume, in a portfolio or in an interview answer.
Is AILA membership worth listing?
Yes. The American Immigration Lawyers Association reports more than 18,000 attorney members across 39 chapters and was founded in 1946 (AILA, 2026). It is the field's professional body, and a chapter committee role reads as engagement rather than a line item.
Should I write separate resumes for different immigration practices?
Yes, if you are applying across the split. A business immigration firm wants petition volume, agency timelines and employer client handling. A removal defense practice wants hearings, briefs and forums. The facts are the same but the ranking and headline numbers change, and one generic document reads weaker than either targeted version.
