An immigration lawyer resume is a one to two page document naming your bar admission, your registration to appear before the immigration courts, and the specific benefits or proceedings you handle.

The last of those is what most immigration resumes get wrong. "Immigration law" is not one job. A lawyer who files family petitions and a lawyer who tries removal cases before an immigration judge share a statute and little else: different forms, different agencies, different adversary, different skills. A hiring partner recruits for one of those practices, not for the field.

How to write an immigration lawyer resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, bar admission and court registrations, legal experience by case type, languages, and education. One page until you have a reported decision or a team.

Admissions sit above experience because they are jurisdictional facts, not achievements. Immigration is federal practice: under 8 CFR 1001.1(f), an attorney appearing before the immigration courts and the BIA is a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of any state, territory, possession or the District of Columbia. One admission reaches the whole country.

Choosing the best resume format for an immigration lawyer resume

Reverse chronological. One page as an associate, two once you have appellate work, a reported decision, supervisory responsibility or a practice you built.

Legal resumes are read for trajectory and forum: which cases you carried alone, before which decision-maker, for how long. A functional layout hides both, which reads as evasion in a profession built on records.

Include your contact information

The subtitle line does the most work. "Immigration Attorney" says nothing about which practice you can be dropped into; "Removal Defense and Humanitarian Relief" says it exactly.

Name the benefit or proceeding you actually practice

This is the block that makes an immigration resume legible, and almost everybody leaves it out. Immigration practice divides into distinct areas requiring different knowledge and, in several cases, a different temperament. Name yours, and name the ones you can cover.

Three things follow, and all three belong on the resume.

The first is that removal defense is litigation and the rest largely is not. A removal case is adversarial, calendared, evidentiary and appealable, with a government attorney opposite. If that is your practice, write it as a litigator does: forums, hearings, briefs, outcomes.

The second is that the employment-based side runs on agency process rather than hearings. The Department of Labor certified 138,093 permanent labor certification applications in fiscal year 2025 and denied 3,404, with 157,669 still pending on 30 September 2025 (DOL Office of Foreign Labor Certification, PERM Selected Statistics FY2025 Q4). Volume, timelines and audit response rates are the metrics there.

The third is that language capability is a genuine hiring criterion here, not a decorative extra. Intake, declaration drafting and hearing preparation happen in the client's language, and a firm hiring an interpreter for every meeting runs a slower and costlier file.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point, serif or clean sans, no photograph, no graphics. Legal hiring is conservative about format for a reason: the document is read as a writing sample before anyone calls it one. Keep practice areas, forums and languages high enough to survive a ten-second scan.

What salary you can expect as an immigration lawyer

The median annual wage for lawyers was $159,670 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $78,360 and the highest 10 percent above $351,600 (BLS, May 2025). Immigration practice sits across that range, and which end you land in is mostly a function of who pays the bill.

Business and employment-based immigration is bought by employers, often on volume retainers, and pays toward the upper part of the distribution. Removal defense and humanitarian work is paid by individuals, legal aid budgets or foundations, and pays lower. Non-profit roles are lower again, and are often the fastest route to hearing volume.

Three things move an individual offer: merits hearing and appellate volume, because it cannot be acquired quickly; professional-level language capability, because it changes what a firm can staff you on; and business immigration process depth, because a firm running employer accounts is buying throughput.
