Summary
A Mercadona resume is a Spanish supermarket CV: two A4 pages at most, written in Spanish, built around shift availability, food safety training and the sections a Spanish employer expects to see. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the photograph and Europass questions answered from official sources, and what the work authorization line has to say if you are moving to Spain.
Mercadona resume examples by experience level
A Mercadona resume is a Spanish supermarket CV: at most two A4 pages, written in Spanish, built around the shifts you can work, the food handling training you hold, and whether you are already authorized to work in Spain.
This guide is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Mercadona or any other retailer, and it contains no inside knowledge of any company's hiring. It uses what the company publishes openly, alongside official European and Spanish sources, as one worked example of how supermarket retail in Spain hires. Everything in it applies to any Spanish or European grocery chain.
If you are used to an American resume, the differences are not cosmetic. The document is called a currículum vítae, it carries details a US resume omits, and there is a live question about attaching a photograph. Getting those conventions wrong is the fastest way to look like an outsider.
Resume guide for a Mercadona resume
This guide and the corresponding Mercadona resume example will cover:
- How a Spanish CV differs from a US resume, section by section
- The photograph question, answered from official European guidance
- When the Europass format helps and when it does not
- Three adaptable summaries: first supermarket job, section specialist, store lead
- Language levels, the NIE and what work authorization means in practice
How to write a Mercadona resume
Seven sections: datos personales, perfil profesional, experiencia laboral, formación académica, formación complementaria, idiomas and informática. Two A4 pages at the absolute limit, and one page if you are early in a career.
EURES, the European Employment Services network, sets the baseline: the CV should be drafted in Spanish, in A4 format, clear and concise, and "it is best to limit it to two A4 pages" (EURES, living and working conditions, Spain).
| Section | Spanish name | What it is answering |
|---|---|---|
| Personal details | Datos personales | Who you are, where you are, and can you be contacted |
| Professional profile | Perfil profesional | What kind of retail worker you are, in four lines |
| Work experience | Experiencia laboral | Have you done volume, and did you stay |
| Education | Formación académica | The qualification floor |
| Additional training | Formación complementaria | Food handling, forklift, prevention of occupational risks |
| Languages | Idiomas | Which customers you can serve, at what level |
| Computer skills | Informática | Tills, ordering systems, stock terminals |
Formación complementaria is the section that decides supermarket hiring
On a Spanish CV, short vocational training sits in its own section, separate from your degree, and in grocery retail it is where most of the hiring signal lives.
The certificates that matter are the food handling certificate (manipulador de alimentos), basic training in prevention of occupational risks (prevención de riesgos laborales), and any ticket for a transpalet or carretilla elevadora. Fresh counters add their own handling and hygiene requirements.
List each with the issuing body, the hours and the year. "Manipulador de alimentos, 10 horas, 2025" is checkable. "Food safety trained" is not.
Run the file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker first; large chains parse applications through a portal before a person opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for a Mercadona resume
Reverse chronological, one or two A4 pages, single column, in Spanish.
Two pages is a ceiling, not a target. The functional format has a narrow use here: Spain has an unusually high rate of temporary contracts, with 28% of employees aged 25 to 49 on them against 13.1% across the EU (EURES labor market information, Spain, data as of December 2024). A CV with several short contracts is normal in this market and does not need disguising. Group them by employer if the list is long, but keep the dates.

A Spanish CV carries more in this block than an American one. City and province are expected, a driving license category is normal and useful for a chain that moves staff between stores, and your own vehicle is worth a line where transport is thin. Leave out date of birth, marital status and identity document number: once standard, now falling out of use, and none of them help you.
Make use of a summary
Four lines under the heading perfil profesional: the section of the store you work in, how long, one number, and your availability.
Supermarket assistant with 14 months of part-time work across till, replenishment and the fruit and vegetable section in a 1,200 square meter store in Valencia. Held a till at an average of 19 transactions an hour through Saturday peak with till variance under two euros a shift, and completed the 10 hour food handling certificate in 2019. Native Spanish and Valencian, English at B2, and available for split shifts, weekends and public holidays.
Fresh food section specialist with six years in Spanish supermarkets, four of them running the fishmonger and charcuterie counters. Cut fresh waste on my section from 3.8% to 2.1% of sales across two financial years by reworking the cutting plan and the end-of-day markdown, while holding the store's highest counter service scores. Hold the food handling certificate, 60 hours of prevention of occupational risks training and a transpalet ticket.
Supermarket floor manager running a team of 34 across fresh, grocery and front end in a store taking 9.2 million euros a year. Rebuilt the shift plan around the delivery pattern, which took out-of-stock on the ambient range from 4.4% to 1.8% over a trading year and cut overtime by 11%. Manage the collective agreement obligations for the team, the annual leave plan and the food safety audit file, with the last external audit passed at 97%.
Right vs wrong: the same Mercadona summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Fresh food section specialist with six years in Spanish supermarkets, four running the fishmonger and charcuterie counters. | Retail professional with extensive experience in the supermarket sector. |
| Cut fresh waste on my section from 3.8% to 2.1% of sales across two financial years. | Responsible for maintaining product quality and reducing waste. |
| Food handling certificate, 60 hours of prevention of occupational risks training, transpalet ticket. | Trained in health and safety procedures. |
The right column names a section, a number and a certificate with hours. The wrong column could have been written by anyone who has been inside a supermarket.
Outline your experience
Employer, store format and size, city, contract dates, then three to five bullets, each with a number.

| Control de caducidades | Ran date rotation on 11 chilled bays, cutting write-off on the section from 3.8% to 2.1% of sales |
| Trabajo en la sección de frescos | Cut and served the fishmonger counter, averaging 62 customers and 130 kilos a day |
| Formación de nuevos compañeros | Trained 7 new starters on till and food handling procedure across two summer campaigns |

Spanish CV conventions, the photograph question and the work authorization line
This is the section that separates a Spanish supermarket CV from an American resume, and it is where applicants moving to Spain lose the most ground.
The photograph. EURES states that for Spain "it is not compulsory to attach a photograph, although this may be useful for some jobs" (EURES, living and working conditions, Spain). Not required, still common, still expected by some employers. Customer-facing retail is one setting where a plain head-and-shoulders photograph on a neutral background is unremarkable. If you are applying from a market where photographs are discouraged, apply the local rule rather than yours.
The language. EURES is unambiguous that "knowledge of Spanish is essential for working in Spain", and its guidance is that the CV and covering letter be drafted in Spanish. Send a Spanish CV even where the advertisement is in English. In Valencia, Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country, the co-official language is a real asset on a shop floor.
Language levels. Use the Common European Framework of Reference scale, A1 to C2, not "fluent" or "conversational". Europass, the European Commission's CV and skills framework, is built around CEFR self-assessment and its CV is available in 31 languages (europass.europa.eu). A recruiter in Spain reads B2 and knows what it means.
The Europass question. EURES describes the Europass CV as an alternative to conventional templates, "particularly when you are seeking a job in another European country" (EURES, living and working conditions, Spain). It helps when qualifications earned in one country are read in another, because it maps them to a common framework. It is not an advantage on a domestic supermarket application, where a clean two page CV in Spanish reads better.
Work authorization. This is the line that decides whether an application goes anywhere at all, and it belongs in your datos personales block as one factual sentence.
| Your status | What the process is | What to write on the CV |
|---|---|---|
| EU, EEA or Swiss citizen | A valid identity card or passport to enter, then register at the Foreign Nationals' Office for an NIE within three months of arrival | "Ciudadanía de la UE. NIE en vigor", with the number |
| Non-EU with a residence and work permit | A residence permit is required to live in Spain | "Permiso de residencia y trabajo en vigor hasta", with the expiry |
| Non-EU without a permit | The permit has to exist before the employment does | Say plainly that you are seeking sponsorship |
Process as published by EURES, living and working conditions, Spain.
Everyone working in Spain also needs a Social Security membership number, obtained by presenting form TA-1 with identity documentation (EURES, same source). You do not need it before applying, but knowing the sequence keeps you from promising a start date you cannot meet.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Ten to fourteen entries, split into the shop floor work, food safety, and the systems.
APPCC is the Spanish abbreviation for hazard analysis and critical control points, and naming it correctly signals that you have worked in a Spanish food environment.
List your education and certifications
Formación académica first, then formación complementaria with hours and years.
Técnico Superior en Gestión de Ventas y Espacios Comerciales, IES Conselleria, Valencia, 2019
Bachillerato, IES Benlliure, Valencia, 2017
Formación complementaria: Manipulador de alimentos, 10 horas, 2025. Prevención de Riesgos Laborales, nivel básico, 60 horas, 2024. Manejo de transpaleta eléctrica, 8 horas, 2023.
Idiomas: Inglés B2, certificado por Cambridge English, 2023
Hours matter. Spanish vocational training is quoted in hours as a matter of course, and a certificate without them reads as unverified.
Choose the right layout and design
One or two A4 pages, single column, a plain face at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, saved as PDF. Large chains take applications through their own portal and parse them before a human reads anything, which rules out two-column templates, text boxes and graphic skill bars. If you include a photograph, put it small in the top corner rather than as a banner.
Write in Spanish, even when the advertisement is in English. Keep it to two A4 pages. Give language levels on the CEFR scale. Put food handling and risk prevention training in their own section, with hours and years. State work authorization as one factual line.
Do not translate an American resume word for word. Do not claim a language level you cannot interview in. Do not list date of birth, marital status or identity document number. Do not hide short contracts. Do not apply through a channel the employer says it does not use.
Spanish supermarket job market and outlook
Retail is the largest employer in Spain and one of the tightest for vacancies, which is why the application process is so structured.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Share of Spanish employment in wholesale and retail trade and vehicle repair, 2022 | 20.6% |
| Spanish unemployment rate, 2023 | 12.2% |
| EU27 unemployment rate, 2023 | 6.0% |
| Spanish job vacancy rate, 2023 | 0.6% |
| Employees aged 25 to 49 on temporary contracts | 28% (EU27: 13.1%) |
Source: EURES labor market information, Spain, figures as published with data current to December 2024.
One in five Spanish jobs is in retail, and the vacancy rate is under one percent
Wholesale and retail trade with vehicle repair employ 20.6% of the Spanish workforce, the largest single sector, ahead of manufacturing at 13.9% and accommodation and food service at 10.6% (EURES labor market information, Spain, 2022 data, current to December 2024).
The job vacancy rate was 0.6% in 2023 against a national unemployment rate of 12.2%. A large sector with very few open posts at any moment queues applications rather than matching them, which is why the big chains publish one application channel and stick to it.
Mercadona reported a workforce of 115,000 and 5,000 new jobs created in 2025, 4,500 in Spain and 500 in Portugal, alongside turnover of 41,858 million euros (Mercadona 2025 annual results, reported March 2026). Real openings, but against a national queue.
What salary you can expect
Spanish supermarket pay is set in two layers, and neither is negotiated on your CV.
The floor is statutory. The salario mínimo interprofesional for 2026 was fixed at 1,221 euros a month and 40.70 euros a day by Real Decreto 126/2026 of 18 February, published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado on 19 February 2026. Across the customary fourteen instalments that is 17,094 euros a year.
Above the floor, pay is set by the convenio colectivo. EURES notes that working conditions in Spain are stipulated in the collective bargaining agreement or the contract, and that these supersede the statutory minimum (EURES, living and working conditions, Spain). Mercadona publishes only that it applies a human resources model offering "stable and quality jobs (training, promotion, good salaries)" with conditions agreed with the unions, and no company pay figures beyond that. Treat any number quoted elsewhere as unverified.
For comparison, US retail sales workers had a median annual wage of $35,560 as of May 2025 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). The markets are not directly comparable: Spanish pay arrives in fourteen instalments, sits inside a collective agreement, and comes with different statutory leave and healthcare.
What your CV can move is the band you enter on: the section you are qualified for, your certificates and their hours, your languages, and your availability.
Key takeaways for a Mercadona resume
- Write in Spanish, on one or two A4 pages, reverse chronological.
- Put food handling and risk prevention training in their own section, with hours and years.
- Give language levels on the CEFR scale, and include any co-official language.
- Treat the photograph as optional but normal; it is not compulsory in Spain.
- Use Europass when qualifications cross a border, not for a domestic application.
- State work authorization as one factual line in your personal details.
- Apply through the employer's own channel; the large chains publish only one.

Mercadona resume questions, answered
Should I put a photograph on a Spanish CV?
It is not compulsory. EURES states for Spain that "it is not compulsory to attach a photograph, although this may be useful for some jobs" (EURES, living and working conditions, Spain). In customer-facing retail it remains common. Use a plain head-and-shoulders image on a neutral background, small, in the top corner.
How long should a Spanish supermarket CV be?
Two A4 pages at most, one if you are in your first few years. EURES advises limiting a Spanish CV to two A4 pages and keeping it clear and concise.
Do I need to speak Spanish to work in a Spanish supermarket?
Yes. EURES states plainly that "knowledge of Spanish is essential for working in Spain". Supermarket work is customer-facing and safety-critical, so the requirement is practical rather than formal. A co-official language such as Valencian, Catalan, Galician or Basque is a genuine advantage in those communities.
What do I need before I can legally work in Spain?
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need only a valid identity card or passport to enter, then register at the Foreign Nationals' Office for an NIE within three months of arrival. Non-EU citizens need a residence permit, and the permission has to exist before the employment does. Everyone working in Spain also obtains a Social Security membership number using form TA-1 (EURES, living and working conditions, Spain).
How do I apply to a large Spanish supermarket chain?
Through the channel the company publishes, and usually only that one. Mercadona's published answer states that "the only way to send us your CV is through the website, by applying to any job offers that interest you", and that applications are not taken in person, by telephone, by email or through social networks (Mercadona, frequently asked questions, accessed September 2026). Handing a CV in at a store is a wasted trip.
