A civil engineer resume is a one to two page document that says where you are on the licensure path, what projects you have delivered, and which part of each one was actually yours.

Those three things are read together, and they are read as a single progression. A hiring principal at a consultancy is not asking whether you are a good engineer in the abstract. They are asking whether you can be billed to a client at a given rate, whether your hours count toward somebody's qualifying experience, and whether your name can eventually go under a seal. The resume that answers those questions in the first ten seconds gets read twice.

How to write a civil engineer resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, licensure and registration, project experience, education, and technical skills. One page until you have five or six years and a license, two pages after that.

Licensure goes above experience. It is a gate, not an accomplishment, and the reader is checking it before they read anything else.

Choosing the best resume format for a civil engineer resume

Reverse chronological, always. One page for the first five years, two once you hold a license and a project record worth listing.

Functional formats fail badly here, because the qualifying experience rule makes the timeline itself a credential. A state board will eventually want to know who supervised you and for how long. A resume that obscures the sequence looks like a resume with a gap in the supervised years.

Include your contact information

Put the license number in the header. Agencies verify it, prequalification packages ask for it, and the file that supplies it without a follow-up email moves ahead of the file that does not.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: discipline, license status, the kind and size of project you run, and one number that describes delivery.

Civil engineer with a BS from an ABET-accredited program at Colorado School of Mines, FE Civil passed June 2024, and Engineer in Training registration in Colorado. Two years of qualifying experience under a licensed PE on municipal water and stormwater projects, including hydraulic modeling in HEC-RAS and SewerGEMS for eleven collection system basins. Outline your project experience

Employer, city, dates and job title first. Then project lines, not duty lines. A project line carries four things: what it was, how big it was, how it was delivered, and what you personally did.

This is the section that separates two civil resumes with identical project lists, and almost nobody writes it deliberately.

Licensure in civil engineering is a sequence with dated steps, and the reader is placing you on it whether you help them or not. Write the sequence.

An NCEES Record is a verified compilation of official transcripts, employment history, professional references and exam results, and it is accepted by all United States state licensing boards for comity applications in additional jurisdictions (NCEES, accessed September 2026). If you hold one, put the number on the page. To a firm with work in four states it means your registration in the fifth is a form, not a project.

Then be precise about the stamp, because this is where inflated resumes get caught. A PE's signature and seal certifies that the work was prepared under that engineer's responsible charge, which NSPE defines as direct control and personal supervision, and it makes that engineer the final authority for the protection of public health, safety and welfare within the scope of the sealed work product (NSPE, What a PE Says with their Signature and Stamp). Only the work clearly identified in the sealed document is covered by it.

Degree first with the accreditation named, then licenses in order of date, then certifications and training that a client or an agency asks for by name.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 10 or 11 point body type, a clear heading for every section, and no photograph. Engineering firms and public agencies both run applicant tracking systems, and multi-column layouts, text boxes and header graphics are where the parsing breaks.

Keep a separate project list as a second document rather than stretching the resume to four pages. Firms building a statement of qualifications will ask for one, and having it ready reads as someone who has been on a proposal team before.

What salary you can expect as a civil engineer

The median annual wage for civil engineers was $100,840 in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $68,240 and the highest 10 percent more than $163,220 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

The industry pattern is the opposite of what most candidates assume. Federal government civil engineers had a median of $117,790 and local government $113,640, both above the $100,620 median in engineering services, which employs half the occupation (BLS, May 2025). Nonresidential building construction sat lowest at $82,400.

The license is the single clearest step change inside that range. Before it you are billed at a lower rate and your work is sealed by someone else. After it you can be engineer of record, which is what a firm is buying. Everything on your resume that shortens the reader's uncertainty about where you are in that sequence, the FE date, the EIT number, the qualifying experience start, the depth module, the comity states, is worth money at the offer stage rather than a year later.
