Summary

A legal cover letter is a one-page business letter that names the role, states your credential (CP, bar admission or bar date), proves one or two legal skills with a concrete example and explains why this firm and city. Law firms read it as your first writing sample, so one typo can end it. Leave out client names, confidential details and a resume recap.

A legal cover letter is a one-page letter that names the role, your credential and one proof of legal skill. So a paralegal leads with case support, a law clerk with research and writing, and a lateral attorney with bar admission and practice area.

Law firms read the letter closely because it shows how you write. The table below shows what to lead with for each role, and full samples follow.

A legal cover letter should name the exact role, state your credential (a paralegal certificate, CP, bar admission or bar exam date), prove one or two skills with a concrete example, and explain why this firm, practice area and city. Close with your enclosures and a next step. Keep it to one page.

Most law school career offices teach the same four-part shape. The University of Toledo College of Law says the letter should almost never run longer than one page3. It also asks you to tie your experience to the employer instead of listing your resume.

  • Opening: Name the role, any referral and your credential in the first two sentences.
  • Proof paragraph: Give one or two examples of legal work, such as discovery, research memos or depositions.
  • Fit paragraph: Say why this firm, this practice area and this city, because location screens out many applicants.
  • Close: List your enclosures, such as a resume, transcript or writing sample, then thank the reader.

West Virginia University College of Law adds a useful test. It says the first sentence should catch the employer's attention4, so lead with a referral or a strong fact, not "I am writing to apply." For the general method, see our guide on how to write a cover letter.

What do law firm readers check first?

Law firm readers check your writing first: grammar, spelling, citations and a clean, formal layout. Then they check your credential, your practice-area fit and your ties to the city. A single typo signals weak attention to detail, which is the core skill for paralegals, legal assistants and lawyers alike.

Legal employers treat the letter as a test. The Toledo law career office puts it plainly.

Myth vs fact: law firms read a legal cover letter as your first writing sample (University of Toledo Law).

Attention to detail is the job

The BLS lists "detail oriented" as a key quality for paralegals, who need to be precise in gathering, organizing, and filing documents1. It says the same about lawyers, who must be precise when they prepare court filings and wills. So a misspelled partner name or a wrong firm name reads as a preview of your work.

What they checkWhat they look forHow to show it
Writing qualityShort, error-free sentences in formal toneProofread aloud, then have a second reader check it
Attention to detailCorrect names, titles, firm and court namesCheck the partner's name and title on the firm site
CredentialCertificate, CP, bar admission or exam dateState it in the first or second sentence
Practice areaLitigation, corporate, family, IP or other fitName the group and one matter type you handled
City tiesA reason to stay in the firm's marketMention a hometown, school or move date

Credentials by role

For paralegals, a certificate or credential adds weight. NALA says over 8,900 paralegals may use the Certified Paralegal (CP) designation5, so write "CP" after your name if you hold it.

For attorneys, the BLS notes that lawyers typically need a law degree and a state license, which usually requires passing a bar examination2. So name each state where you are admitted. If you are not admitted yet, give the exam date instead, and don't imply a license you don't hold.

First research the firm and the practice group, then find the hiring partner or recruiter by name. Next open with the role, your credential and a referral. Prove one or two skills with numbers, explain your fit and city ties, then close with enclosures. Proofread twice before you send.

Write each letter from scratch for each firm. A letter that could go to any firm tells the reader you did not research theirs.

  1. Research the firmRead the practice group page, recent cases or news and the bios of the attorneys you would work with.
  2. Find the right readerUse the hiring partner, recruiting manager or office manager by name, and check the spelling and title.
  3. Open with role and credentialName the job, your referral if any, and your CP, bar admission or bar exam date.
  4. Prove one or two skillsGive concrete legal work, such as 120 discovery responses or 14 research memos, tied to the posting.
  5. Close with fit and enclosuresSay why this firm and city, list your enclosures and thank the reader.

Match the firm's own words

Copy two or three terms from the posting, such as "e-discovery," "trial prep" or "estate administration." Then use the firm's name for its group, not your own label. It shows you read the posting, and it helps if the firm screens with software.

A paralegal sample leads with practice area, case load and tools. A legal assistant sample leads with calendars, documents and accuracy. A law clerk or new attorney sample leads with research, writing and bar status. A lateral attorney sample leads with bar admissions, years and the matters handled.

The samples below use invented names and numbers, so swap in your own facts. The BLS projects 0% job growth for paralegals and legal assistants from 2025 to 2035, yet about 40,800 openings a year1 as workers leave. It also expects about 28,700 openings a year for lawyers.

Paralegal cover letter sample

ExampleLitigation paralegal

Dear Ms. Patel: I am applying for the Litigation Paralegal role at Hale & Whitman LLP. I am a NALA Certified Paralegal with 4 years of civil litigation support. At Dunn Mercer, I manage discovery for 30 active cases at a time. I built our deadline calendar in Clio, so our team has not missed a court date since. Last year I drafted 120 discovery responses and prepared exhibit binders for two jury trials. Because your posting asks for e-discovery, I also run document review in Relativity. I would welcome a call about your trial team's needs. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Jordan Lee, CP

ExampleEstate planning legal assistant

Dear Mr. Owens: Your posting for a Legal Assistant in estate planning stood out to me because I have supported two estate attorneys for 2 years. I schedule client signings, prepare will and trust packets and track 60 open matters in PracticePanther. Before a packet leaves my desk, I check every name, date and signature line against the intake form. I also enter billing each Friday and type 70 words per minute. I have enclosed my resume and would be glad to meet. Sincerely, Sam Carter

Law clerk or new attorney sample

ExampleLaw student applying for an associate role

Dear Ms. Alvarez: Professor Dana Kim suggested I write to you about the Associate role in your employment litigation group. I will graduate from Midstate Law School in May 2027 and sit for the July 2027 Ohio bar exam. As a law clerk at the county public defender, I wrote 14 research memos and drafted two motions to suppress. I also served as a notes editor on the Midstate Law Review, where I edited 20 articles for citation and style. Your wage-and-hour work for employees is why I want to practice in Columbus. I grew up in Dayton and plan to stay in Ohio. I have enclosed my resume, transcript and a 10-page writing sample. Thank you for your consideration. Respectfully, Alex Rivera

Stanford Law's sample letters to firms follow the same pattern. Each one names a practice area interest and ties it to the firm7, then backs it with coursework, clinics or a clerkship.

Lateral attorney cover letter sample

ExampleFifth-year commercial litigation associate

Dear Mr. Grant: I am a fifth-year commercial litigation associate admitted in New York and New Jersey. I am applying for the senior associate role in your Newark office. Over 5 years I have taken 12 depositions, argued 6 motions and second-chaired a two-week jury trial on a contract claim. I also run discovery on matters with more than 500,000 documents. Your group's growth in product liability defense fits the work I want to do next. If we move forward, I can share a list of past matters at the conflicts stage. I have enclosed my resume and a writing sample, and I would welcome a conversation. Sincerely, Taylor Brooks

Write a letter tailored to the job post

A cover letter tailored to every job post, in minutes.

Write a cover letter

Leave out client names, case details that are not public, a recap of your resume, salary demands unless asked, personal details that don't affect the job and any claim you can't back up. Never imply a bar license you don't hold. Also skip slang, jokes and exclamation points, since the tone must stay formal.

Confidentiality matters even in a job letter. In 2012 the ABA amended Model Rule 1.6 so lawyers may share limited conflict-check details, but only after "substantive discussions" about the move8. So a first letter should describe matter types, not clients.

Do

  • Describe matters by type, size and your role.
  • State bar admissions or your exam date exactly.
  • Name the firm, group and reader correctly.
  • Keep it to one page and three or four short paragraphs.

Don’t

  • Name clients or share non-public case facts.
  • Repeat every job from your resume.
  • Say "admitted" if your bar results are still pending.
  • Open with "To Whom It May Concern."

What to say if they push back

Interviewers often test the claims in your letter. So prepare a short, honest answer for each one.

  • "Are you licensed yet?" Give the exam date, the results date and the state.
  • "Why leave your current firm?" Point to the practice area or city you want, not to problems.
  • "Can you name the clients?" Offer matter types and size, and say you will share details at the conflicts stage.
TemplatePush back: the partner asks about bar status

Partner: "Your letter says you sit for the bar in July. What if you don't pass?"

"I have a study plan with a commercial course, and I start full time in May."

Partner: "Could you still do the work before admission?"

"Yes, if you need research and drafting under supervision, I can start as a law clerk."

Treat the letter as your writing sample

Read the letter aloud, then print it and check every name against the firm website. If you can, ask a lawyer or career advisor to mark it up. One wrong partner name can end your chance.

For other errors that sink letters, see our list of cover letter mistakes.

Use standard business letter format: your contact block, the date, the reader's name and address, then a "Dear Ms. Last Name:" greeting with a colon. Keep a classic font, one-inch margins and one page. Match the header to your resume, sign it and send it as a PDF with the enclosures the posting asks for.

Toledo Law asks you to match the letter heading to your legal resume and to sign your cover letter3. It also warns that many legal employers will not review a resume without a cover letter. Our cover letter format guide shows the full layout.

Keep it short

Three or four paragraphs are enough for most legal roles. If you need help cutting, read our guide on how long a cover letter should be. Then end with a clear next step, as our guide on how to end a cover letter explains.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a legal cover letter be?

Keep it to one page, usually three or four short paragraphs. Law school career offices say a legal letter should almost never run past one page.

Do law firms still read cover letters?

Yes. Many legal employers read the letter as a writing sample, and some will not review a resume that arrives without one.

Should I mention bar admission in a cover letter?

Yes, if you are an attorney or bar candidate. Name each state where you are admitted, or give your exam date if you are not admitted yet.

What should a paralegal cover letter include?

Include your practice area, case load, tools such as Clio or Relativity and any credential, such as a certificate or CP. Then add one concrete result.

How do I address a cover letter to a law firm?

Use the hiring partner or recruiting manager by name with "Dear Ms. Last Name:" and a colon. If you can't find a name, use "Dear Hiring Committee:".

Can I name past clients in a legal cover letter?

No. Describe matters by type, size and your role instead. Share details only later, when the firm runs a conflicts check.
