Application for Finance Director, Ellsworth Packaging Holdings

Dear Mr. Vestergaard,

I am applying for the Finance Director post at Ellsworth Packaging Holdings. I currently answer for a $340 million profit and loss, a $196 million balance sheet and four operating entities, with 24 people in finance, reporting to the chief executive with a direct line to the audit committee.

I took the role with a material weakness in revenue cut-off open from the prior year audit. Closing it was not an accounting argument: it was a revenue recognition calendar with named owners, a contract review file that actually existed, and a cut-off test run internally in the two months before fieldwork rather than discovered during it. The following two audits closed with no significant deficiencies reported. In the same period I refinanced an $85 million facility at 85 basis points tighter and rebuilt covenant headroom from 1.2 to 2.4 times.

Your notice mentions a consolidation across the three acquired entities and a first group audit. That is close to what I have just done, and the part I would take first is the reporting layer: we replaced two spreadsheet consolidations with a single group layer, which is what made the audit tractable rather than merely faster. I would also want to look early at working capital, since ours released $18.4 million once terms and collections were reset.

I am a Certified Public Accountant, have reported to an audit committee each quarter since 2019, and can give three months' notice. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Isadora Pellegrini, CPA

Summary

A finance director cover letter states what you answer for, what an independent party said about it, and one decision that changed because of a number you produced. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, how to handle an audit finding, what you may say about company financials, and the openings that separate a director letter from a manager one.

Finance Director cover letter examples by experience level

A finance director cover letter is a one-page letter about accountability. Three or four short paragraphs saying what you answer for, what an independent party found when they looked at it, and one decision that changed because of a number you produced.

The reader is usually a chief financial officer, a chief executive or a board chair, and often a search consultant screening on their behalf. All of them are reading for the same thing: whether this candidate has carried something the size and shape of the thing we need carried, and whether it was clean when they put it down.

Expert Tip

Put the accountability sentence first, and make it comparable

The opening sentence after the role should let the reader size you against their own business without arithmetic. Revenue, balance sheet, entities, headcount, and who you report to.

The second sentence should be the control record, because it is the fact a board reads first and the one almost no letter volunteers. Two clean audits, or a finding you inherited and closed, are both strong. Silence is not.

Everything after that is support. A chief financial officer who reads those two sentences and recognizes their own problem will read the rest; one who reads a paragraph about strategic partnership will not.

Writing an audit finding into a letter

Most finance directors keep audit findings out of a letter entirely, and it costs them. A candidate who inherited a problem and closed it is describing a method, which is exactly what a board is buying.

Use the terms as they are defined. A material weakness is "a deficiency, or a combination of deficiencies, in internal control over financial reporting, such that there is a reasonable possibility that a material misstatement of the company's annual or interim financial statements will not be prevented or detected on a timely basis", and a significant deficiency is "less severe than a material weakness, yet important enough to merit attention by those responsible for oversight of the company's financial reporting" (PCAOB, AS 2201, paragraphs A7 and A11).

Then write the arc: what was open when you arrived, what you actually changed, and what the next cycle produced. Describe the outcome, never the document. The audit report, the management letter and the workpapers stay where they are.

What counts as evidence at director level

A director letter needs one piece of evidence, not six, but it helps to know which kinds are available before choosing.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence
ControlInherited a material weakness in revenue cut-off; two subsequent audits closed with no significant deficiencies reported
CapitalRefinanced an $85 million facility at 85 basis points tighter; covenant headroom from 1.2 to 2.4 times
CashNet working capital down 11 days, releasing $18.4 million
DecisionExited a contract line at negative 6 percent contribution margin on a costing rebuild the board approved
FunctionFinance from 31 people to 24 through shared services, voluntary turnover from 22 percent to 7 percent
GovernanceQuarterly audit committee reporting since 2019; owns the going concern paper
Statistical insight

The published pay data stops before the part you will negotiate

Financial managers, the occupation that covers finance direction, had a median annual wage of $166,570 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $94,310 and the highest 10 percent over $323,270. Chief executives, reported under top executives, had a median of $213,990 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). A finance director sits inside the overlap, and the occupation is growing: financial managers are projected up 10 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 65,600 openings a year (BLS, 2025 to 2035 projections).

What those figures do not include is the part most finance directors ask about. The federal wage survey measures straight-time gross pay and excludes non-production bonuses, overtime and the employer cost of benefits (BLS, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey documentation), and no federal source publishes a bonus, long term incentive or equity figure for the occupation.

For a letter that means one thing: do not put a number on your expectations unless the process asks for one, and if it does, anchor on base and say plainly that you would want to see the full structure. Quoting a bonus benchmark you cannot source is a poor opening move with a reader who will know where it came from.

Do

Open with what you answer for, sized in dollars and entities. Give the control record in the second sentence. Write an inherited finding and how it closed. Name one capital event with a date. Say who you report to and who you present to. Name the qualification once, in the closing sentence, with your notice period.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "responsible for" anywhere in the letter. Do not quote an audit report, a management letter or workpapers. Do not publish unpublished results, margins, customer names, contract values or valuation multiples. Do not claim a refinancing you supported as one you led. Do not name a salary expectation you cannot source.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the post: isadora-pellegrini-finance-director-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person. At this level the chief financial officer, the chief executive or the search consultant is almost always named, and a letter to "Dear Hiring Committee" reads as one sent to six companies.

Keep every figure identical to your resume, because at this level both documents are read side by side. Our finance director resume example uses the same numbers as this letter.

Key takeaways

  1. Open with what you answer for: revenue, balance sheet, entities, headcount, reporting line.
  2. Put the control record in the second sentence, including anything you inherited.
  3. Write one arc: what was open, what you changed, what the next cycle produced.
  4. Name one capital event with a date and terms you may disclose.
  5. Say what you would take first, tied to something specific about them.
  6. Describe audit outcomes, never audit documents.
  7. Address a named person and keep it to one page.

Finance director cover letter questions, answered

How long should a finance director cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. Search consultants read dozens in a shortlist round and boards read them between other papers. Length is not read as substance at this level.

Should I really mention a material weakness in a cover letter?

If you inherited one and closed it, yes, and it is often the strongest paragraph available to you. What a board is buying is a method for making a function trustworthy, and a finding you remediated is the only direct evidence of one. Say what was open, what you changed, and what the following cycle produced. What you must not do is describe an open finding at your current employer, quote the audit report or the management letter, or write anything a reader could treat as disclosure.

How is this different from a finance manager cover letter?

Scope of accountability and audience. A finance manager letter is about the cycle: the close in working days, the forecast cadence, the pack and its readers. A finance director letter is about what the cycle is for: statements you answer for, a cash position, an audit opinion and a decision a board took on a number you produced. Our [finance manager cover letter example](/cover-letter/finance-manager/) is written for the other side of that line deliberately.

What do I write if I have never presented to a board?

Say so accurately and name what you have done. Reporting to a chief financial officer, preparing the finance section of a board pack, sitting in on audit committee meetings and answering lender questions are all genuine governance exposure, and they are different from presenting yourself. Boards are used to appointing a first-time finance director; what they are not used to is a candidate who blurs the line, because the interview will find it in ten minutes.

Can I name the company's own numbers in the letter?

Only what is public. If they file accounts, are listed, or have published a results release or a press announcement, referring to something in it is fine and shows you read it. Anything you know from a process, a prior employer or a conversation is not, and a reader who recognizes a number you should not have will stop reading. The same rule applies to your own side: scale and shape, never anything unpublished.
