Tennis Coach cover letter examples & templates

A tennis coach cover letter names the rating bands you teach, the weekly court hours you can carry, and what happened to your players' ratings. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, what changes between a club and an academy application, and the openings that get a file read twice by a director of racquets.

Application for Senior Teaching Professional, Camellia Point Tennis Club

Dear Mr. Okafor,

I am applying for the Senior Teaching Professional post at Camellia Point Tennis Club. I teach adult beginner through NTRP 4.5 and junior groups from UTR 1 to 9, and I can carry 28 on-court hours a week in season, currently split 9 private, 11 junior group, 6 adult clinic and 2 league team practice.

The evidence I would point you to is the junior performance group I have run for the past two years: 14 players, median UTR movement of 1.6 over twenty-four months, with 9 of the 14 moving up a competitive bracket. On the adult side, 5 of 12 competitive players moved up a published year-end NTRP band across two seasons, and my three league teams have held 84 percent season-to-season retention. I quote year-end ratings on the NTRP side because the dynamic rating is not disclosed to players, and I attach a window to every UTR figure because the rating is a rolling twelve-month average.

I noticed Camellia Point has added four courts and is advertising a new adult beginner pathway. Building that pathway is the part of the job I would want: I took a two-day-a-week beginner clinic from 6 to 19 regular players in eighteen months, and 11 of them completed a year-end rating in their first league season. I would also be glad to start the cardio tennis block you do not currently run.

I hold the Racquet Sports Professionals Association Certified Professional level, with CPR and AED current through 2027 and USTA Safe Play approval in place. I can start on the January court sheet. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,Lucia Bernal

A tennis coach cover letter is a one-page letter telling a director of racquets which rating bands you teach, how many court hours a week you can carry, and what happened to the ratings of the players you taught.

Directors hire against a court sheet with gaps in it. A letter that names the gaps it can fill does the reader's job for them, and it is rare enough to stand out in a pile.

Lead with bands and hours, in that order

A director reading applications in October is looking at a court sheet with a Tuesday beginner clinic uncovered and a junior block at 4pm that nobody can take.

Write the sentence that answers both: "I teach adult beginner through NTRP 4.5 and junior groups from UTR 1 to 9, and I can carry 28 on-court hours a week in season." That is the whole opening.

Then add what most letters omit: your shoulder season, so the director can see whether you fit their calendar as well as their court sheet.

What counts as evidence in a tennis coaching letter

Rating movement is the strongest evidence in this job and the one most letters leave out. These are the forms it can safely take.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence

  • UTR movement14-player performance group, median movement 1.6 over twenty-four months
  • NTRP movement5 of 12 players moved up a published year-end band across two seasons
  • Program growthAdult beginner clinic from 6 to 19 regular players in eighteen months
  • RetentionThree league teams at 84 percent season-to-season retention
  • Capacity28 on-court hours a week across four formats
  • CompetitionA monthly match play day of 40 to 60 entries

Two rules make these safe to write. On the NTRP side, quote only published year-end ratings, because dynamic ratings are "calculated to the one-hundredth of a point" and "are not disclosed to players" (usta.com, retrieved 17 September 2026). On the UTR side, attach a window, because a UTR Rating "is the weighted average of up to 30 of their most recent match ratings" and "only matches within the last 12 months count" (utrsports.net, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Clubs, academies and municipal programs

Do

  • For a private club, lead with adult programming, retention and member communication, because that is what a membership renews for.
  • For an academy, lead with the performance band, tournament travel and rating movement with windows attached.
  • For a municipal program, lead with volume, beginner onboarding and the players you brought into a first league season.
  • Name your certification level as the body names it today, and say what you would add that they do not run.

Don’t

  • Do not claim NTRP dynamic rating movement; it is not disclosed to players.
  • Do not give a UTR change without a window.
  • Do not name a junior player or the college that recruited them.
  • Do not write a paragraph about your own playing career.
  • Do not describe yourself as teaching all levels.
  • Do not send a letter without the facility's name in it.
Expert tip

The player base keeps growing, and the club sector pays above the occupation median

The USTA reported 27.3 million tennis players in the United States in 2025, up 1.6 million on the year, with 14.5 million core players who play ten or more times a year, and growth of 54 percent since 2019 (usta.com, 18 February 2026, retrieved 17 September 2026).

The occupation behind teaching posts is coaches and scouts: 298,800 jobs in 2025, a projected 6 percent change through 2035, about 36,400 annual openings and a May 2025 median of $47,320. Of those jobs, 22 percent sit in arts, entertainment and recreation at a median of $48,440 and 8 percent are self-employed, against 64 percent in educational services at $46,890 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

The club sector is the higher-paying minority of the occupation and it is growing its customer base. Capacity is the currency there: a coach who can fill a week is worth more to a director than a coach with a better forehand.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the club's portal insists otherwise, named for yourself and the post: lucia-bernal-teaching-professional-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person. The director of racquets is listed on nearly every club site, and a generic salutation on an otherwise specific letter reads as a file sent to ten clubs.

Use the same figures as your resume so the two agree. Our tennis coach resume example uses the numbers here, and the free ATS checker will check the finished file.

Key takeaways

  1. Name the bands you teach and the hours you can carry in the first paragraph.
  2. Label every rating claim with its system, NTRP or UTR.
  3. Quote NTRP movement only between published year-end ratings.
  4. Attach a window to every UTR figure.
  5. Use a median or a count across a named group, never an individual player.
  6. Name one real thing about their facility, from their own pages.
  7. Give your certification level as the body names it today.

Tennis coach cover letter questions, answered

How long should a tennis coach cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. Directors read these between lessons, and length is not effort.

Should I include my own playing record?

One clause at most, and only where it is relevant. A college record can matter for an academy post where parents ask about it, but coaching and playing are different jobs, and a paragraph about your own results reads as a candidate more interested in themselves than the court sheet.

What if I do not have rating evidence yet?

Use capacity and growth instead: court hours by format, group sizes, clinic growth, retention, and the players you brought into a first league season. Then say what you will start tracking. A coach who offers to report median rating movement by group each season is offering something most pros never do.

Do I write NTRP or UTR in the letter?

Whichever the facility uses, and say which you mean. A club running USTA adult leagues thinks in NTRP; a junior academy thinks in UTR. If you teach across both populations, name both systems with their bands, because that combination is rare in one hire.

Does the certification level matter in the letter?

Yes, and write it as the body writes it. The Racquet Sports Professionals Association, formerly the United States Professional Tennis Association, names four tennis levels: Instructor, Professional, Elite Professional and Master Professional (rspa.net, retrieved 17 September 2026). Give the one you hold and the one you are working toward with its date.
