Application for Pipe Welder, turnaround crew, Mesa Ridge Mechanical

Dear Mr. Tavares,

I am applying for the pipe welder post on your turnaround crew at Mesa Ridge Mechanical. I have eight years on process and utility piping, qualified 6G in GTAW root with SMAW fill and cap on carbon steel and 316L stainless, tested to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section IX. My AWS Certified Welder maintenance documentation is current to September 2026, so there is nothing to renew before a start date.

Most of my recent work has been 2 in to 12 in process piping for food, chemical and municipal water clients, schedule 10 through schedule 80. Across the last two plant turnarounds I welded roughly 900 joints with a 97.4% radiographic first-time pass rate. I do my own layout, bevel prep and fit-up from isometrics, and I log heat numbers and weld identification against the weld map, so my work goes into the turnover package without anyone having to chase the paperwork.

I have five years of live-site shutdown experience under hot work permits, confined space entry and fire watch, with no recordable incidents. I read that your Pueblo scope this autumn is mostly stainless process lines, which is the work I am fastest and cleanest on. I am also qualified 3G and 4G on carbon steel plate to AWS D1.1 if you need plate covered between piping scopes.

I have my own hood, leathers and hand tools, and I can travel and work nights or a rotating shutdown schedule. I can start with two weeks' notice, or sooner for a test date. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Emiliano Zabala

Summary

A welder cover letter tells a foreman which processes and positions you are qualified in, what materials and thicknesses you run, which code you tested to, and whether that qualification is current. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that work, and how to handle a lapsed ticket without losing the interview.

Welder cover letter examples by experience level

A welder cover letter is a short, plain letter telling a foreman whether you can be put on his welding procedure specification this week, or whether he has to book you a test first.

That is the whole decision. Everything else is there to make the first paragraph believable.

Expert Tip

Put the qualification in the first two sentences, in code

A foreman reading applications is matching people to procedures. He has a WPS on the desk fixing the process, the material, the thickness and the position, and he wants to know whether your ticket falls inside it.

So open like this: "I am a pipe welder with eight years on process and utility piping, qualified 6G in GTAW root with SMAW fill and cap on carbon steel and 316L stainless, tested to ASME Section IX and current."

That closes the whole first screen. "I am a hardworking welder with a strong safety record looking for an opportunity" leaves every question open.

Dear Mr. Tavares,

What counts as evidence for a welder

Welders let the coupon speak. In a letter you need one or two numbers so the coupon gets scheduled at all.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence
Radiographic pass rate97.4% first-time RT pass across roughly 900 welds on two turnarounds
Repair rate2.1% weld repair rate over 14 months under visual and magnetic particle inspection
Scope and volume2 in to 12 in carbon steel and 316L stainless, schedule 10 through schedule 80
Self-sufficiencyOwn layout, bevel prep and fit-up from isometrics, no fitter required

None of those needs a former employer's permission to say, and all of them are checkable on the first test coupon, which is why they carry weight.

Continuity: the sentence most welders leave out

The AWS Certified Welder program is performance-based. There is no prerequisite course. You take a hands-on test at an AWS Accredited Test Facility and it is judged by an AWS Certified Welding Inspector, following the AWS QC47 specification and AWS Standard Welding Procedure Specifications, with some facilities testing to an employer's own procedure (American Welding Society program page, read 12 September 2026).

What keeps it alive is the paperwork afterwards. AWS states that the welder must submit certification maintenance documentation every six months confirming continued use of the process for which they were certified (AWS, September 2026).

That is why "AWS Certified Welder, 2019" is a weak line and "AWS Certified Welder, maintenance current to September 2026" is a strong one. The first invites a question; the second answers it.

Do

Name processes in code letters and positions in code numbers, and say plate or pipe. Give the base metals and the thickness or schedule range. Name the code you tested to. State the currency of your maintenance documentation. Offer a test date, because offering to test is the single strongest close in this trade. Say what gear you own and whether you will travel.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "certified welder" with nothing after it. Do not list a process you would not pass a test on this week. Do not hide a gap in welding work; say what you were doing and say you are ready to retest. Do not fill the page with adjectives, because a foreman will stop reading and go to the next file. Do not send the same letter to a structural shop and a pressure shop.

Statistical insight

Where welders work, and where welders are paid

Manufacturing employs 63 percent of welders, cutters, solderers and brazers, with specialty trade contractors at 8 percent, self-employed welders at 4 percent, and repair and maintenance at 4 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

The median annual wage was $53,750, or $25.84 an hour, in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $39,240 and the highest 10 percent over $77,530. By industry, specialty trade contractors paid a median of $59,440, repair and maintenance $56,080, and manufacturing $51,210 (BLS, May 2025).

The trade held 437,700 jobs in 2025 and is projected to reach 448,100 by 2035, a 2 percent rise, with about 40,300 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).

The letter implication is direct. The better paid work sits with contractors and in maintenance, and it is gated on position and code qualification rather than years served. A current 6G ticket belongs in your first sentence, not your third paragraph.

Length, format and sending it

Half a page to one page, four short paragraphs, 200 to 350 words: shorter than most trades, because the content is dense and the reader is busy. PDF, named for yourself and the post: emiliano-zabala-pipe-welder-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person where you can: the shop manager, weld foreman or superintendent is usually named in the posting or on the company site.

Keep every figure identical to your resume. Our welder resume example uses the same qualification record and the same numbers as this letter.

Key takeaways

  1. Process, position and code in the first two sentences, written in code letters and numbers.
  2. Say plate or pipe, and give the material grades and the thickness or schedule range.
  3. State the currency of your AWS maintenance documentation, not just the test year.
  4. Give one quality number: radiographic pass rate or repair rate, with the weld count.
  5. Say whether you do your own layout, bevel prep and fit-up, and whether you travel.
  6. Offer a test date, and keep it to four paragraphs addressed to a named person.

Welder cover letter questions, answered

How long should a welder cover letter be?

Half a page to one page, four short paragraphs, 200 to 350 words. Foremen read files between shop problems: density beats length, and offering to come in and test beats both.

Do welders even need a cover letter?

For a shop application through a portal, often not, though attach one if there is a field. For contract, turnaround and maintenance work it is worth it: those roles are matched against a specific procedure, and the letter is where you say your ticket fits it.

What do I write if my qualification has lapsed?

Say it plainly and offer to retest. "My ASME Section IX 6G was last qualified in 2023 and I am available to retest on request" is a normal sentence in this trade. Implying currency you have not got costs you the job when the coupon is cut.

What if I only hold an employer qualification?

Describe it accurately: "employer-held performance qualification to ASME Section IX, 6G, requalified 2025". Employer qualifications are ordinary and respected. Presenting one as an AWS credential is not, because that is a separate performance-based program tested at an AWS Accredited Test Facility and judged by an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (American Welding Society, read 12 September 2026).

How do I write a letter with no professional welding experience yet?

Write the school shop as work: which processes, which positions you tested in, on what thickness, to which code, and how many hours you have on the machine. Then the tickets you hold and the ones you are booked to sit. Entry welding jobs typically ask for a high school diploma or equivalent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), so the qualification detail is what separates two otherwise identical files.
