Summary

Yes. Lever, part of Employ Inc., ships AI features: Talent Fit ranks applicants against the job's requirements, AI writes interview transcripts and summaries, and a Screening Companion drafts rejection feedback and flags fading candidates. Lever says recruiters keep the final say. Rejections come from people or from rules the employer sets. So write a resume that parses cleanly and proves each job requirement in plain words.

Does Lever use AI? Yes: since 2025, Lever ranks applicants with an AI tool called Talent Fit, writes AI interview notes and drafts rejection feedback. But Lever says recruiters make the final call, so a person or an employer rule decides who moves on.

So does Lever use AI to judge you? This guide lists each AI feature we verified on Lever and Employ pages, with dates, and what each one means for you.

Does Lever use AI in recruitment, and which features does it have?

Yes. Lever's AI features include Talent Fit, which ranks applicants against job requirements, AI interview transcripts and summaries, an AI Interview Companion, and a Screening Companion that drafts rejection feedback and flags candidates at risk of dropping out. Lever also lists Fraud Signals and paid add-ons such as AI Screening by VONQ.

Lever is an applicant tracking system (ATS) owned by Employ Inc., which also runs Jobvite and JazzHR. Employ announced its "AI Companion" strategy5 on June 3, 2025. Lever has rolled the features out in releases since then.

If you want the basics of the system first, read how Lever ATS works.

How Lever ATS reads your resume: why it says couldn't auto-read resume, why a PDF needs selectable text, how recruiters search, and what Talent Fit does.

The dates come from Lever's Spring 2025 release deck4, its June 2025 launch post2, its September 2025 release post3 and a January 2026 Hackett Group report7 that Employ published. The deck also says Talent Fit launched for non-EU accounts only.

What we could not verify

Some guides say Lever writes job descriptions or sources candidates with AI, but we found no Lever page that shows either as live. In June 2025, Lever called its Sourcing Companion "coming soon," and the current AI features page1 does not list it. So treat those claims with care until Lever confirms them.

How does Lever's Talent Fit rank your application?

Talent Fit compares your application with the job's requirements and ranks you against other applicants. Lever says it looks at skills and experience, not just keyword matches, and shows recruiters why each match scored as it did. It also flags gaps so a recruiter can ask about them in the interview.

Lever calls Talent Fit an "AI-powered matching engine"2 that ranks candidates against the job. It says the tool reads skills and experience, then shows the scoring behind each match. The current product page adds that employers can set "customizable criteria."

What a ranking means for you

A ranking changes who a recruiter opens first, but Lever's pages never say it removes you. The Hackett report says Talent Fit nudges the recruiter to "take a closer look" at strong matches. It can also suggest you for other roles that stay open more than 30 days.

So your goal is a resume the matcher can read and a person can trust. Clear job titles, dated roles and the posting's exact skill names do both jobs.

Old advice says Lever never scores resumes

Many Lever guides written before 2025 say the system does not match or score resumes. That changed when Talent Fit reached general release on May 27, 2025. Still, each employer decides whether to turn it on, so you cannot tell from the job link alone.

Does Lever's AI auto-reject applicants?

Lever does not say its AI rejects anyone. Its AI page says "recruiters always have the final say." But employers can set their own rules in Lever: since 2020, Auto-screening can archive applicants who fail a stated requirement. So a fast rejection usually comes from an employer rule or a recruiter, not from Talent Fit.

Here is the honest split between what the vendor says and what the employer controls.

Compare: does Lever use AI to reject you? Its AI ranks and drafts; employer rules and recruiters decide (Lever).

What Lever says its AI does

Lever's AI features page is direct on this point.

Recruiters always have the final say in decision-making.

Lever, AI Recruiting Features

The same page says AI "should support recruiters, not replace them." The Screening Companion also drafts rejection feedback, but the Hackett report says the recruiter selects the reasons first. The AI writes the words after a person has decided.

What the employer can switch on

Rules differ. In February 2020, Lever launched Auto-screening8, and its release said recruiters "can automatically disqualify candidates who don't meet certain requirements." The example was a job that needs Chinese: Lever could archive applicants who said they don't speak it.

That is a rule, not AI. But a "No" to a required question can still end the application in minutes. Some employers also add paid screening tools, such as AI Screening by VONQ, which send scored candidates into Lever.

Our guide to which ATS sends automatic rejection emails explains how to read the timing of a rejection. If it lands within minutes, a rule or question likely triggered it.

What happens in a Lever interview with AI notes?

If the employer turns it on, Lever can record your interview, write a transcript and save an AI summary to your profile. The AI Interview Companion can also give the interviewer a guide and flag biased language. The summary then shapes feedback, so give clear, specific answers with numbers.

Lever's September 2025 post3 says the feature can "automatically capture and summarize every recorded interview." The post also says "AI doesn't hire people—people do." So the summary helps the panel, and the panel still decides.

How to answer when a tool takes notes

An AI summary keeps facts and drops vague claims. So speak in short, complete examples: the task, what you did and the result.

TemplateAnswer that survives an AI summary

Interviewer: "Tell me about a time you improved a system."

"Our CI pipeline took 20 minutes per build. I split the test suite and cached dependencies. Build time dropped to 8 minutes, and the team shipped twice a day instead of once."

What to say if they push back

  • "We record interviews for notes. Is that OK?" Ask who sees the summary and how long the company keeps it.
  • "Your summary says you lack Kubernetes." Point to the project where you ran it, with the date and scale.
  • "Our tool flagged a gap in your resume." Give the dates and the reason in one sentence.
TemplatePush back: the recruiter cites an AI gap

Recruiter: "Our screening notes say you have no team lead experience."

"I led a 4-person team on the billing rewrite in 2024. It's the second bullet under my last job, so I can walk you through it."

Recruiter: "Was that a formal title?"

"No, but I ran sprint planning and code reviews for six months."

What does Lever's AI mean for your resume?

Lever's AI reads what your resume parser pulls out, so a clean file still matters most. Use a simple one-column layout, standard headings, real job titles and dates, and the posting's exact skill names. Then prove each skill in a bullet with a result. Lever says Talent Fit looks past basic keyword matches, so proof beats a bare skills list.

Before any AI can rank you, Lever has to parse your file into fields. Tables, text boxes and images can scramble that step, as our guide to common resume parsing errors shows. If the parse fails, the best resume in the pile can look empty.

Keywords still matter to people too

Recruiters also search their Lever database by keyword, long after you apply. Our guide on how recruiters search ATS databases shows the search terms they type. So use the full name of a tool once, then the short form, such as "Amazon Web Services (AWS)."

Lever is common at tech companies, so look at strong IT resume examples before you rewrite. They show how to list stacks and projects so a parser and a person can read them.

A bullet rewrite for a Lever posting

ExampleWeak bullet vs keyword-matched bullet

Weak: Worked on backend services and APIs. Strong: Built 6 REST APIs in Python and Go that handle 2M requests a day, cutting p95 latency by 40%.

TemplateFill-in-the-blank: skill proof bullet

[Skill from posting] used to [task] for [scope: users, systems, team size], which [result with a number].

Example: Used Terraform to automate 30 AWS environments for a 12-person team, which cut setup time from 2 days to 1 hour.

If you apply for developer roles, start from a full software engineer resume example. It ties each skill to a dated project in one clean column.

Do and don't

Do

  • Copy the posting's exact skill names, such as "PostgreSQL."
  • Put dates and titles in plain text, not in a header.
  • Prove each core skill in a bullet with a number.
  • Save as a text-based PDF or DOCX file.

Don’t

  • Hide keywords in white text for the AI to find.
  • Use tables, columns or icons for key details.
  • Answer "Yes" to a required question you don't meet.
  • Paste the job description into your summary.

For a side-by-side view of how machines and recruiters read differently, see AI resume review vs human review. Other systems work in a similar way, as our guide on how Greenhouse ATS works shows.

What laws cover AI hiring tools like Lever?

In New York City, Local Law 144 bars employers from using an automated employment decision tool unless it had a bias audit within the past year. They must publish a summary of the results and notify candidates 10 business days before use. Enforcement began July 5, 2023. Whether a Lever feature counts depends on how the employer uses it.

New York City's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection9 enforces the law. It says employers may not use such a tool unless it had a bias audit "within one year of the use of the tool." Candidates must get notice 10 business days before use.

Donut chart: 66% of US adults would not apply to an employer using AI in hiring decisions (Pew, 2023).
Figure 2In a December 2022 survey, 66% of US adults said they would not want to apply where AI helps make hiring decisions. Source: Pew Research Center11.

The duty falls on the employer, not the vendor. Lever's AI page mentions "audit readiness" through IBM watsonx governance. But we found no public Lever bias audit for Talent Fit, and its help center lists a "Talent Fit Bias Assessment" article we could not load.

How well the law works so far

In December 2025, the New York State Comptroller10 reviewed enforcement from July 2023 to June 2025. The city got only two complaints in that time. It found one compliance issue among 32 companies, while the Comptroller found at least 17 possible violations in the same group.

Most Americans are wary of AI in hiring

A Pew Research Center survey11 of 11,004 US adults, run in December 2022, found that 66% would not want to apply to an employer that uses AI to help make hiring decisions. Also, 71% opposed AI making the final hiring decision. So if you feel uneasy, you are in the majority, and you can ask an employer how it uses the tools.

Check the careers page footer in NYC

NYC employers that use a covered tool must post a bias audit summary. It often sits on the careers page or in the job posting's fine print. If you find one, it names the tool and the audit date.

How do you check your resume before you apply through Lever?

Open the job, copy its must-have skills, and check that each one appears in a bullet with proof. Then answer every screening question truthfully, save a clean PDF and run it through a parse check. Finally, prepare clear examples for an interview that AI may summarize.

So does Lever use AI the same way at every company? No, because each employer sets up its own tools. Use this method for every Lever application.

  1. Copy the must-havesPaste the posting's required skills and years into a note. These drive both rules and rankings.
  2. Map each one to proofFind the bullet that proves each skill. If one has no proof, add it or skip the claim.
  3. Answer the questionsRead each yes or no question twice. A careless "No" can trigger an employer's Auto-screening rule.
  4. Test the fileRun your PDF through a parse check and fix any field that comes out blank or jumbled.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lever use AI to screen resumes?

Yes, if the employer turns it on. Talent Fit ranks applicants against job requirements and explains each match, but Lever says recruiters make the final decision.

Does Lever automatically reject candidates?

Lever's AI pages do not describe AI rejections. Employers can set Auto-screening rules that archive applicants who fail a stated requirement, so a rule can reject you within minutes.

How do I know if a company uses Lever?

Check the application link. Lever job pages usually sit on jobs.lever.co followed by the company name.

Can Lever's AI read my resume if it has columns?

It reads what the parser extracts. Columns, tables and text boxes can scramble that step, so a one-column layout is the safer choice.

Is Lever's AI legal in New York City?

It can be. Under Local Law 144, an employer that uses a covered tool must have a bias audit within one year, publish a summary and notify candidates 10 business days before use.

Does Lever record job interviews?

Only if the employer turns on the feature. Lever's AI transcripts and summaries capture recorded interviews and save a recap to your profile.
