Application for Warehouse Supervisor, Night Shift, Winterset Fulfillment Partners
Dear Ms. Thackston,
I am applying for the Warehouse Supervisor post on nights at Winterset Fulfillment Partners. I currently run the night shift at Brantmoor Distribution Group, a 420,000 square foot distribution center, with 61 associates and 4 leads covering replenishment, slotting corrections, clean-up and equipment charging, and agency labor running between 30 and 45 percent of the crew.
The part of the job I would most want to bring is what nights hand on. When I took the shift, first shift was spending about six hours a day catching up on replenishment that had not been finished, and the handover was a phone call. I rebuilt it into a single turnover document covering open orders, held trailers, equipment down, short picks and the first three jobs for the incoming shift, and I added a five-minute start-of-shift brief at 22:10 with the safety point, the plan and the constraint. First-shift catch-up is now under an hour, and the pick face is fully replenished at start on 94 percent of nights, against 71 percent when I started.
I read that Winterset is bringing a second sortation line into the building next spring, which usually lands on nights before anyone else feels it, since the clean-up and charging windows are the first things a commissioning schedule eats. The first thing I would want to look at is your agency mix and your onboarding, because that is where I found the largest gain at Brantmoor: a three-day onboarding took a new agency worker to pick rate in two shifts instead of five, and cut first-week attrition on the shift by half.
I am employer-certified on sit-down counterbalance, reach truck and order picker, and I am a designated powered industrial truck trainer, so I can deliver and sign training and evaluation for your operators. I can start on four weeks of notice and I am available for nights or weekends. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, Cornelius Torkelson
Summary
A warehouse supervisor cover letter names the shift you ran and what that shift existed to do, the crew you were handed and how much of it was agency labor, and one measured change in what the next shift inherited. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that work, and what to write when you are moving from lead to supervisor.
Warehouse Supervisor cover letter examples by experience level
A warehouse supervisor cover letter tells a distribution center manager which shift you ran, what that shift existed to do, who you were given to do it with, and what the next shift found when you left.
Distribution center managers hire supervisors under pressure, usually because a shift is already struggling. The letter that gets a call names a shift like theirs and one thing it handed on better than before.
Guide to a warehouse supervisor cover letter
This guide and the corresponding warehouse supervisor cover letter example will cover:
- How to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
- What evidence looks like when your throughput numbers are the building's
- How the letter changes when you move from lead to supervisor, and the openings that work
How to write a warehouse supervisor cover letter
| Paragraph | Its job | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | The post, the shift you run now, the crew and its agency share | 2 to 3 sentences |
| Evidence | One thing you changed about what the shift handed on | 4 sentences |
| Fit | Something real about their site, and what you would look at first | 3 sentences |
| Close | Certification, availability, thank you | 2 sentences |
Say what the shift was for, not just when it ran
"Second shift supervisor" tells the reader nothing about the work. Second shift outbound runs against a carrier cut; nights run against the state first shift will walk into. Different jobs, different pressures.
Write it in one clause: "I run nights at a 420,000 square foot site: replenishment, slotting corrections and clean-up, so first shift starts on a full pick face."
If the posting names a shift you have not run, say so and say what transfers. Managers are used to that move, and a candidate who is honest about it is a better bet than one who lets the assumption stand.

Openings that work
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| I am writing to express my interest in the warehouse supervisor position | I run nights at a 420,000 square foot site with 61 associates and 4 leads |
| I have several years of experience in warehouse operations | I have run second shift outbound against a 23:00 carrier cut, and nights on replenishment |
| I am a strong leader who motivates teams | Agency labor runs 30 to 45 percent of my crew, and a 3-day onboarding reached pick rate in 2 shifts instead of 5 |
What counts as evidence when the numbers belong to the building
Units per hour and lines picked are shared with everyone on the shift. Use the numbers that are yours.
| Kind of evidence | What it looks like in a sentence |
|---|---|
| What you handed on | Orders carried into the night shift fell from 240 a night to 45 |
| Against a fixed constraint | Closed the wave before the 23:00 trailer cut on 96 percent of nights |
| Crew you built | Agency onboarding reached pick rate in 2 shifts instead of 5 |
| People developed | Developed 4 leads, 2 of whom moved into supervisor roles |
Moving from lead to supervisor
This version is usually written badly, because candidates either overclaim the title or apologize for not holding it.
Do neither. Name the crew you directed, the decisions you made without asking and the ones you escalated, then name the supervisor work you have already done: writing the turnover, running the start-of-shift brief, training and evaluating operators, or covering the shift when the supervisor was out. Managers promote leads constantly, and the letter that describes the boundary precisely reads as ready.
Name the shift and what it exists to do in the first two sentences. Give crew size and agency share as separate numbers. Follow one handover change to a result. Name one real thing about their site. Say what you are certified to do. Keep it to one page.
Do not quote the building's throughput as though it were yours. Do not call yourself a hands-on leader in a fast-paced environment; every letter in the stack does. Do not hide that you are a lead rather than a supervisor. Do not claim a portable forklift license. Do not leave out the shift you are available for.
Nothing certifies you into the next job, so the shift record has to
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook publishes no current profile for first-line supervisors of laborers and material movers, so there is no federal wage for the title. The occupations either side are published: hand laborers and material movers at a median of $38,220 and transportation, storage, and distribution managers at $107,230, both May 2025.
For that management job the Handbook lists a high school diploma as the typical entry-level education, five years or more of related work experience before the job, and no on-the-job training after it (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
So the ladder out of the shift and into the building is built on experience someone has to be able to read. Your letter is where that reading starts, which is why it describes decisions and handovers rather than adjectives.
Length, format and sending it
One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal says otherwise.
Address a person. Distribution center leadership is usually named in the posting or on the site's careers page, and "Dear Hiring Manager" on an otherwise specific letter reads as a file sent to six buildings.
Say which shifts you will work, plainly, in the closing line. It is the most common reason a strong supervisor application stalls and it costs one sentence to remove. Keep the numbers identical to your resume: our warehouse supervisor resume example uses the figures written here.
Key takeaways
- Name the shift and what it exists to do in the first two sentences.
- Give crew size and agency share as two separate numbers.
- Follow one handover change from problem to result.
- Use evidence that is yours rather than the building's.
- Name one real thing about their site and what you would look at first.
- Say what you are certified to do, and state the shifts you are available for in the closing line.

Warehouse supervisor cover letter questions, answered
How long should a warehouse supervisor cover letter be?
One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. Distribution center managers read these between shifts, often on a phone, and length does not read as effort.
Do I need a cover letter if I am applying through a warehouse portal?
Attach one wherever there is a field for it. The portal collects the same structured data from every applicant. The letter is the only place you can say which shift you ran, how much of your crew was agency labor, and what the next shift inherited.
How do I write about a shift that was failing when I got it?
Directly, with the before and the after. "First shift was spending about six hours a day catching up; it is now under one" beats any claim about a smooth operation, and it is what a manager hiring for a struggling shift is looking for.
Should I mention agency labor in a cover letter?
Yes, as a number and as a problem you have solved. Agency share is the defining staffing condition of most shifts and almost no letter mentions it. Naming it, then naming your onboarding or conversion result, tells a reader you have run a real crew rather than a stable one.
What do I write if I have never held the supervisor title?
Write the lead job accurately and name the supervisor work you have already done: the turnover document, the start-of-shift brief, training and evaluating operators, covering the shift in the supervisor's absence. Then say plainly that you are looking for the step up. A manager would rather read where you actually are than a title you cannot support in an interview.
