In general, the field is five links: planning, sourcing, making, moving and returning. Different managers hire them and measure them on different numbers, so a letter written to all lands with none. However, the common failure is the phrase "end-to-end supply chain experience" doing work that a forecast accuracy figure or a supplier count should be doing.

Work out which link the posting is hiring for before you write a word
Job titles here are unreliable. "Supply Chain Manager" can mean a demand planner, a buyer, an inventory owner or a distribution manager, depending on the company.
The responsibilities tell you. Forecasting, cycles and horizons mean planning. Suppliers, contracts and cost mean sourcing. Stock, counts and availability mean the making link. Carriers, sites and on-time delivery mean moving.
Write the letter to that link, and if you hold more than one, name them in a single clause in the first paragraph.

What counts as evidence on each link
Readers look for different things in each link; therefore, the wrong evidence makes you the wrong candidate.

Above all, pair every inventory figure with the service figure. After all, a reduction on its own is indistinguishable from a stockout waiting to happen, and an experienced reader assumes the worse of the two.
Moving between links, and how to write the move
Most careers here are a series of sideways moves, and a letter is the place to explain one; a resume can only show it as a date.
Also, name the link you are moving to, say what transfers, and be specific about what does not. A replenishment analyst moving into planning brings demand history and parameter setting but has not chaired a cross-functional cycle, and saying so is stronger than pretending otherwise.
The links are not growing at the same rate
Logisticians, the occupation nearest the planning link, are projected to grow 18 percent between 2025 and 2035, much faster than the average, from a base of 255,100, with about 26,600 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026).

If you are writing from the recording side towards a planning job, that gap is the letter's argument. Write the decision you influenced with the record rather than the record itself: the parameter you changed and what happened to availability.
Do and don't
Name the link the posting is hiring for in the first paragraph. Give one number with a before, an after and a period. Pair inventory figures with service figures. Say what you would start on, taken from something real about their chain. Name a credential with its awarding body and year.
Do not write "end-to-end" unless you can name all five links and evidence each. Do not give a cost saving with no baseline. Do not list ERP vendors; the resume is the place for systems. Do not claim to have owned a link you supported. Do not send a letter that would suit a planning job and a warehouse job equally well.
Length, format and sending it

How long should a supply chain cover letter be?
One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. The reader is usually the manager who owns the link you are applying to, reading between meetings.
Should I say I have end-to-end supply chain experience?
Only if you can name all five links and evidence each in the same letter. Otherwise it fills the space where evidence should be. Naming two links honestly is stronger than claiming five vaguely, and it survives the first interview question.
What do I write if I am moving from one link to another?
Say which link you are moving to and what transfers, then be honest about the gap. A replenishment analyst moving into planning has demand history, parameter setting and the exception habit but has not chaired a cross-functional cycle. Naming the gap is what makes the rest credible.
